Abstract:
Purpose: Improvement measures are taken unceasingly in organizations in order to optimize the obtained results in each sphere of a company’s functioning. This article presents the results of an improvement process conducted for a welding operation in the given production process. Design/methodology/approach: Taking advantage of the Kaizen approach, the article describes the results of this process and its visualization, which has been conducted with the help of a Spaghetti Chart tool. Findings: Initially, it has demonstrated that the analysis of real pathways of product value creation at the given worksite through application of the mapped-out changes brings about measurable effects. The applied worksite reorganization allowed for a limitation of an employee’s excessive movements at the worksite. In order to conduct a benchmark – both states “before” and “after” the introduction of improvement changes have been juxtaposed. Research limitations/implications: The presented analysis has a temporally and spatially limited dimension - this simultaneously being an impulse to extend research in the future. While conducting an analysis of an operator’s work, the problem must be dealt with in a broad perspective - we conduced type case study, so this is the limitation. Practical implications: The conducted analysis has taken place in real organizational conditions, using the example of a functioning worksite. Working with the “continuous improvement” approach, the instruments for development have been initiated in all spheres and levels of the given organization. Line employees have been motivated by the management to carry out single modernizations at the given worksite, which has influenced their own development. This in turn has stimulated their conscious need for active participation in the process of change. Originality/value: The conducted analysis has taken place in real organizational conditions, using the example of a functioning worksite.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to present an economic evaluation framework of an RFID system implementation through a pilot project with the aim of streamlining logistic processes and compliance with higher level requirements. The company involved in the project belongs to the CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) food industry, and in particular to the alimentary industry, whose principal scope was to comply the new norms of the sector by implementation of a better traceability system. This system, besides being very effective for the scope of the project, also had a huge impact in economic terms on logistics resources and cost reduction. For this reason, the discover of the RFID technology for the company has been greatly appreciated at management level, and today other fields of application are under evaluation. The added value of this article is contained not only in the results obtained in the economic evaluations, but also in the applied methodology, evidencing the advantages obtainable in the processes by cutting no added value operations. The economic analysis has thus been conducted on the basis of this TO-BE process streamlining.

Abstract:
In this paper we have researched two methods for peptide synthesis; solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) and recombinant protein production, hereafter called recombinant production. The goal was to create a decision support that can be of use when choosing a production method for a given peptide. Additionally, we wanted to find a way to tell if a given sequence might be difficult to synthesize with SPPS, and in those cases recommend recombinant production as an alternative. To accomplish this, we have investigated general problems that may occur for the two methods as well as amino acid and sequence specific issues. We have also researched if there are any known solutions to avoid these problems, and by evaluating the gravity and frequency of the problems, with these solutions in mind, the decision support was created. A description of each considered issue is given, but the amount of each amino acid and the sequence of the amino acids in the peptide also needs to be considered when choosing the method. For 15 out of the 20 individual amino acids we have recommended the use of SPPS. For the remaining five, three are dependent on the placement within the sequence and in two cases we recommend considering recombinant production. We believe we have created a decision support that fulfills its purpose and can be of use when choosing the production method for future biotherapeutics.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
We have established collaboration with Skanska Sweden AB; the work is to contribute to a better understanding of how costs can be minimized in construction output. They want us as students with different perspectives to take on the problem and study the subject in different ways. Construction output has a variety of items you can take into account and work to find opportunities to reduce total costs. What are these items and how can the savings be found? The aim is to find those items that lead to high production costs. The work develops recommendations and suggestions for minimizing production costs. The methods we use to find the records are based on interviews, observations and analysis of the production costing. Most of the work is based on the compilation of interviews with production managers and analysis of their production costing. The comparisons are made between the different contracts to see how they relate to each other in terms of cost. When we made a compilation of this particular subject it showed clearly that all production managers work under the same concept but in different ways. One of the areas that could be improved is the reporting of production calculations. Production Managers' production calculations differ from each firm operating under the same accounting template. The compilation of the interviews shows what production managers prioritize in their jobs and how their experience and finished leadership works in practice.

Abstract:
Saving time and resources is something that is very important in construction business today. The faster a work can be done the more money a company can make. In this degree project the authors have looked at the process of handling construction drawings in different parts of the construction industry. To be able to find the construction drawings in an easier way and not have to sort out old construction drawings when new arrive is something that may simplify and speed up the process. The authors have looked at the application DDR – Database for Details and Drawings, which they consider could simplify the process of handling construction drawings. During this degree project, interviews have been done with different people in the construction industry to see possibilities of improvement and benefits of the application DDR. The result of the degree project shows that this application would make the most difference on construction sites and within management of buildings since these are the ones that handle construction drawings on a daily basis. Application DDR can shorten the time used for handling of construction drawings by approximately a 25% decrease according to the interviewed at the construction sites; this would make a great difference in the daily work. If they only use digital construction drawings, the needs to sort out old construction drawings when new ones arrived, will be eliminated and more time can be saved. To do as much of a difference as possible on today’s market the improvements that have emerged during the interviews have to be developed to the application DDR. As it is today there are many features that are missing which make that the construction companies won’t use the application due to the lack of possibility to add details on their own. Management of buildings considers that there are several important functions such as measuring and drawing that are missing to use the application DDR. Within calculation engineering and municipalities there is no future for the application DDR. Education at college and in the production of construction sites consider that zooming and panning must be made simpler, despite this they are interested in using the program DDR.

Abstract:
This thesis was carried out at Astrazeneca Södertälje within Meto-pre stage, which is part of the factory API, intending to streamline the maintenance work. Apreventive maintenance survey was carried out, to identify maintenance work that was performed twice by both API operators and the maintenance provider Caverion. The thesis presents an account of concepts in maintenance, TPM (Total Productive Maintenance), and the decision model QFD (Quality Function Deployment) which constitute the theoretical starting point for results and analysis. The thesis is based on collected observations and interview materials from staff active in operations and maintenance. The results of the study show that there are overlaps in maintenance work, for example in weekly supervision/inspections and preventive maintenance (FU) within the factory part Meto-pre stage. Both operators and Caverion carry out maintenance operations that include a visual control of oil levels, leakage, noise, vibrations for several machines. A clearer distribution of maintenance measures between operators and Caverion will contribute to the streamlining of maintenance work.

Abstract:
AbstractThe DataBio’s agriculture pilots were carried out through a multi-actor whole-farm management approach using information technology, satellite positioning and remote sensing data as well as Internet of Things technology. The goal was to optimize the returns on inputs while reducing environmental impacts and streamlining the CAP monitoring. Novel knowledge was delivered for a more sustainable agriculture in line with the FAO call to achieve global food security and eliminate malnutrition for the more than nine billion people by 2050. The findings from the pilots shed light on the potential of digital agriculture to solve Europe’s concern of the declining workforce in the farming industry as the implemented technologies would help run farms with less workforce and manual labor. The pilot applications of big data technologies included autonomous machinery, mapping of yield, variable rate of applying agricultural inputs, input optimization, crop performance and in-season yields prediction as well as the genomic prediction and selection method allowing to cut cost and duration of cultivar development. The pilots showed their potential to transform agriculture, and the improved predictive analytics is expected to play a fundamental role in the production environment. As AI models are retrained with more data, the decision support systems become more accurate and serve the farmer better, leading to faster adoption. Adoption is further stimulated by cooperation between farmers to share investment costs and technological platforms allowing farmers to benchmark among themselves and across cropping season.

Uneven modes of data production have led thousands of jurisdictions to organize and share data in myriad of complicated ways. Using two case studies in New York City and Pennsylvania, this chapter explains how technological innovation within criminal justice systems can lead to incorrect, incomplete, or misused data. Within the offices of local criminal justice agencies, it is the employees who are charged with modernizing record-keeping, streamlining systems, and controlling information for their respective branch of criminal justice. But these branches have divergent functions and somewhat conflicting goals, leading to a lack of data harmonization and little consensus on what should be shared.

This article defines REL, describes types of REL authoring tools, discusses management and instructional issues surrounding REL in corporate and academic settings, and summarizes the experience of the National University of Singapore (NUS), an early adopter of the concept of REL since 2004. Almost all current literature on the topic focuses on REL applications in corporate e-learning. There is very little academic research into issues surrounding REL because this is a recent development. At this stage of implementation of REL, the literature on the topic is limited. The following three definitions are commonly used: 1. Josh Bersin defined REL as a category of online training content, which can be developed in weeks, can be authored by subject matter experts (SMEs), and maintains instructional focus and quality (Bersin & De Vries, 2004). REL tools leverage on common software such as PowerPoint and then convert that to Flash or other formats for Web delivery with options to add audio and simple quiz. Content is published, edited, and republished by the SMEs with little or no assistance. 2. Patti Shank, President of Learning Peaks, broadened the definition to include rapid instructional design, development, deployment, and evaluation (Shank, 2006). REL is no longer just synonymous to the rapid authoring and development of content, but also to the streamlining of the entire project management process and production cycle. 3. Another possible definition of Rapid E-learning is when the phrase is used to indicate how rapidly e-learning is being adopted or embraced by an organization. (Tan, Lee & Goh, 2004). The definitions by Bersin & Associates and Patti Shank, which include process and product, are widely accepted as the main definitions of REL.

Abstract:
The concept of artificial intelligence stems from the approach to empower machines to act independently of their human masters. This has been found to be extremely useful in situations where routine or repetitive actions are required to be taken based on given data patterns for which complex algorithms and decision-making processes are required to be executed. In such cases, AI has been proved to be effective in replacing humans. While instances of AI substituting humans may appear to pose potential threats to jobs, induction of AI in manufacturing processes can reduce instances of accidents owing to human fatigue or otherwise threat to life and limb working in dangerous environments. In this chapter, the authors discuss the role of artificial intelligence in building information modeling and knowledge management. They also explain how AI can be used as a building block for a safer and productive work environment.

Abstract:
In the era of globalization, the use of technologies like the Internet has created possibilities for individuals to interact across geographical locations. Businesses are grasping the benefits of collaboration and gaining from extending it inside and outside traditional boundaries (Doz & Kosonen, 2007; Evans & Wolf, 2006). It is common nowadays to see a manufacturing process being undertaken by a number of groups from suppliers and several tiers that connect across supply chains (Christopher, 2005). Information systems and information technologies support these activities by facilitating the streamlining and automation of interorganizational information flows (Galliers, 1999). However, despite the increasing availability of systems and technologies to facilitate collaboration and online work, it is far from clear what type of impacts such systems are generating in the work of individuals (Meng & Agarwal, 2007), and how they can support collaboration outside organizational boundaries. To foster collaboration, managers need to enable coordination between groups and to ensure their autonomy, while at the same time guarantee delivery of value to the business. How can businesses develop collaborations and with them obtain competitive advantages? What are the roles that information systems and technologies can play? Evans and Wolf (2006) present two key examples of business collaboration (i.e., the Linux community and the Toyota production systems) which show how traditional business practices need to be challenged if not transformed radically. According to them, organizations should devise simple and modular tasks so that different suppliers (or internal teams) can undertake them with few guidelines. Collaboration needs to be kept simple and open. It needs to be fuelled with a high number of small-scale interactions inside and outside organizations with simple (i.e., standard) technologies to support them. Work needs to be made visible so that information about it can be continuously updated and shared. A number of options (e.g., for production or service processes) needs to be maintained so that innovations do not focus only on what works well at a particular moment in time, but what could be valuable for the future. Organizational structures should be replaced by networks of leaders who act as connectors between individuals. But even if the above strategies are adopted, Evans and Wolf (2006) also highlight that collaboration needs an appropriate work environment where trust is the norm. Trust enables individuals to exchange information and share the intellectual property of their findings. With trust, it is understood that rewards are going to be shared and that it is more important to “get on with the job” in case there are problems to be solved than to claim for individual compensations. Trust will also ensure that even those who compete (inside or outside organizations) can work together to develop solutions to common problems. The more collaborative work is developed, a higher degree of trust exists, and a higher number of opportunities can flourish to convert solutions in innovations. The issue of trust will be revisited later in the chapter.

Abstract:
The Internet has facilitated the development of e-businesses using web-based services leveraging back-end database systems, inventory systems and payment processing systems. Online retail businesses can be set up in a relatively short period of time. In contrast, set-up of a manufacturing system takes much longer; the system design involves various stages from gaining an understanding of the product and its market to machine selection, layout, control logic, part flow analysis and so on. Cyberinfrastructure has the potential to revolutionize the design and operation of manufacturing systems by creating a collaborative environment distributed across a number of physical locations through web-based virtual communities, thereby simplifying and streamlining the manufacturing system design and integration. This paper describes how current technologies could facilitate the implementation of a cyberinfrastructure for manufacturing. A case study describing a current manufacturing system architecture and how a future one would use cyberinfrastructure is used to describe major gaps that exist and standards that need to be developed.

Full text
Abstract:
A radial compressor inlet represents an asymmetric and highly complex flow path, with high potential for flow disturbance. Due to the large computational resources and long lead times required for CFD analysis of such components, this resource has historically been reserved for conceptual or prototype designs. In the production environment, where compressor internals are often customized to a particular application, designers generally rely on geometric analysis of the flowpath. Low priority historically given to centrifugal inlet design is adequately illustrated in “mud etching” of the flow field in a retrofitted radial compressor inlet. An estimate of the potential for efficiency gain through inlet optimization, based on CFD predicted loss coefficient, is presented. It is noted that poor exit flow profiles can negatively impact performance, as well. Ill effects may include efficiency loss in downstream components, mechanical vibration, and compressor control issues. With continual improvement in CFD processing speed, the prospect of applying CFD based optimization techniques to production radial inlet designs becomes more feasible. In this investigation, CFD analysis is performed on an existing radial inlet design and validated with data from a flow visualization test rig. The subject inlet design is subsequently optimized through CFD analysis, with detailed attention being given to the impact of adjusting various geometric characteristics. A number of independent geometric parameters, which are determined to have significant impact on loss coefficient, are condensed into an optimization parameter. This optimization parameter serves as a preliminary indicator of design quality. Alternative brute force design methods are time prohibitive and may not provide the designer with feedback required to effectively alter geometry. Details of the CFD modeling and subsequent validation testing of the baseline inlet design are given. CFD results for a variety of modified inlet designs are presented. An overview of the optimization parameter and its application to a new radial inlet design are also presented. The potential for such an optimization parameter to limit design iteration is illustrated. Although additional refinement is suggested, the subject optimization parameter shows potential to direct the designer away from low efficiency designs.
