Abstract:
Child neglect and abuse has been linked with the growth in the number of street kids for some time. A mathematical model is used to explore the impact of peer influence and child abuse in the presence of removal of street kids from the streets into children's homes/foster homes and improvement in the welfare of adults. The threshold quantity known as the reproduction number and equilibria for the model are determined and analyzed. Results from this study suggest that removal of street kids from the streets into children's homes/foster homes and improving the welfare of adults have the potential to reduce the number of children living in the streets. Interestingly, our results illustrate that adult peer influence leading to child abuse of children makes the problem of street kids worse than any other factor. To effectively control the growth in the number of street kids require strategies that address both economic and social factors affecting children and their guardians. Addressing only an issue affecting one group like guardians through improvement of their welfare may not be enough to stem the growth in the number of street kids as some would be turning to the streets due to negative peer influence among children.

Abstract:

The major argument of this article is that amid the rhetoric of inclusion of caste/ethnic/regional groups in the national mainstream, street children known as vagrant kids are the victims of exclusion. In a new situation on the streets, Vagrant kids are the vagabond. However, abandoning the home and adjusting to the streets is a multifarious process. The forming of the vagrant kids is a complex itinerary actions embedded with the age, sex, and ethnicities/caste, place of origin, family economy, family roles and responsibilities. Among the multiple factors, family dysfunctions and company with street boys are the raison d'être for the emergence of street children culture. In a transformed situation on street, kids’ lives have a momentous relationship to the street as a space and a new sub-culture in a new situation. In a rupture from works, which considers vagrant kids a hindrance to progressive social change, this study squabble that forming of vagrant kids is society ingrained and hence endorses role of community in bringing transference, meaningful development in the status of vagrant kids through an affirmative change in the behavior of the people and the government.

Economic Literature Vol.12 2014: 26-38

Abstract:
Children begin careers on the streets in several locations in the city of Jambi. They work on the streets as street musicians, vehicle glass cleaners, newspaper and tissue sellers, both forcibly and deliberately. Their existence is influenced by some factors, such as family neglect and socio-economic conditions; as well as finding work on the streets and sustaining the work are much easier than looking for work which uses energy or mind. The purpose of this research is to study the religious education of street children who become car glass cleaners which has increased significantly compared to other street professions. This study aims to explore two issues: where the children obtain their religious education and to what extent they practice it in their daily life. Qualitative collecting data techniques were used including observation and interviews. This research found that the street children interviewed in this study only had access to religious education at morning school. They do not attend madrasah, the Qur'an educational school or Taman Pengajian Alquran (TPA), and Sekolah Islam Terpadu. The dominant factors affecting their religious education were their school and their peer group at school. Meanwhile, parents seldom practice the religious duty in family, thus the parents’ influence on the children’s religious practices was minimal. Therefore, this research recommends other actors give early religious education for street children. Religious education can be integrated with their shelter homes which can be their early Islamic religious education.

Abstract:
In Zambia, it is true to say that people are politically free but materially still very poor, 49 years after independence which was attained in 1964. Many people lie below poverty datum-line and those that are, most hit, are the people living in rural areas. Many people are flocking from the rural areas to cities, leaving the old people, women and children in rural areas and in poverty. The levels of poverty in Zambia have reached a crisis, that even the president of Zambia, His Excellence Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata, acknowledged this fact during his parliamentary address to the second session of the 11th National assembly broadcast live on Zambia National broadcasting Network in September 2012. The church is challenged by conditions under which the rural dwellers find themselves in. As a church, our political liberation is to be transformed and driven by the will to restructuring and healing our society; thus ultimately developing those individuals who are suffering in the rural areas of the country. In Zambia, the church should accept that the missionaries who brought the gospel from western countries worked very well in the area of community development. The missionaries’ work and their care for the poor should inspire the churches today to be willing to help the poor rural people to be transformed. The good thing the United Church of Zambia could learn from the early missionaries is that the Christian church needs to be committed and involved in the plight of the poor. The church cannot ignore the socio – economic issues that affect rural poor communities. The United Church of Zambia should be transformed and made to understand that human liberation is not possible, if the political and economic issues are not equally addressed, a human being is not only the soul but also, consist of body and mind. The Christian church must bring a holistic ministry to the suffering people. The church; especially the United Church of Zambia, should understand that economic freedom is a reality which cannot be separated from people’s daily life. The church should learn to listen and act as ‘a midwife’ and a place of safety. She must be willing to suffer with the poor, for the sake of the poor. While the church is committed to development issues, let it also not lose sight of spiritual issues. Therefore, the church leadership should serve as a role model in human and community development. The Christian church should use the gospel to change the mind-set of the rural poor in order to help them transform their living standards.

Abstract:
During the 1990 decade, the non governmental organizations (NGOs) started working differently from their original proposals: they started working in partnerships with the Government in the execution of public policies. In this essay, I investigate the basis of the transformation in the work of the NGOs, the relation between the NGOs that work with street kids in the centre of Sao Paulo and the Government, focusing the participation in the public policies and the autonomy of these organizations. For a better understanding of the work of these institutions and the establishment of public policies destined to street kids, I present a report of the attendance given to the children and adolescents who live in risk situation in Brazil and describe, in a summary way, the main aspects related to the children who live on the streets. To obtain the empiric data, I made use of questionnaire technics, interviews and direct observation.

Abstract:
This case study of Covenant House, an emergency shelter for street kids in downtown Toronto, focuses on the experiences that draw kids into youth shelters and that drive them out. The analysis stresses the importance to street kids of feeling "cared for". Street kids were drawn to Covenant House because they felt cared for there by its open intake policy, appealing facilities (clean surroundings and good food), and staff who listened to and were interested in their problems. But residents were rather swiftly turned off by its rigidly enforced, elaborate and "uncaring' rule structure, and either walked out or got kicked out. Given the limited alternatives in Toronto's "shelter world", however, Covenant House has become the preferred choice for street kids who find themselves in a cycle of entering, leaving and returning.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to understand the complex world of the snitch. The data for this thesis comes from interviews that were obtained by Richard Rosenfeld, Bruce A. Jacobs and Richard Wright. The data was obtained by conducting interviews with 20 active offenders, 15 males and 5 females. The interviews were conducted in an informal manner and lasted between a half-hour and an hour. The interviews were conducted on a one on one basis and offenders used nicknames instead of their real names. The findings revealed that while snitching is prevalent in African American communities many of the subjects did not snitch. However, for those that have talked to police, subjects are motivated by money, jealously and dislike. Furthermore, older subjects portrayed themselves as veterans who understood the street and would rather share the criminal market and work around problems, than take them head on and possibly end up in a position where informing is the only way out.

Abstract:
Reading and writing statistics can be part of children's early literacy experiences. With that in mind, we saw in work with the Dollar Street database, the possibility of multivariate data readings with 7- and 8-year-olds. We aim to find in this tool, statistical teaching alternatives that make sense to students, contributing to the reading and expression of the world and its statistical disposition. The research data was produced from video-recording of lessons and analysis. Listening to what kids think and participating in their discoveries with Dollar Street helped us understand their relationship with multivariate data and see how they can recognize themselves in the data, identify their place in the world, and create statistical provisions.

Abstract:
In this paper, the flow properties of several types of liquid passing through various sizes of micro-orifices were investigated. The jet thrust and pressure drops were measured for two polyethylene glycol solutions and four surfactant solutions. Different flow properties were found for the various surfactant solutions depending on the charge of the solute. For an anionic surfactant, the results were similar to those for water, whereas in the case of a cationic surfactant, both the jet thrust and pressure decreased greatly in comparison with the other test liquids. Finally, a nonionic surfactant exhibited a steep rise in the pressure drop at a particular value of the Reynolds number. In explaining this behavior, the liquid-solid interface and alignment of the surfactant molecules are considered, and consequently, it is strongly suggested that the elastic stress on elongational flows is a contributing factor. In addition, the decreases in pressure and thrust for polyethylene glycols are attributed to viscoelastic properties, regardless of the molecular weight of PEG.

Abstract:
Till (n=196) and stream sediment (n=60) samples were collected in the area south and west of Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories (NTS 85B, C, F, and G), over the course of 3 summer field seasons. Samples were processed to recover kimberlite and other indicator minerals. This report summarizes results of the kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) studies, including measures of KIM mineral types, abundances, and chemistry (major, trace, and rare earth elements). KIMs were present in 24% of the samples collected, and only 183 KIM grains in total were recovered, of which Cr-pyrope garnets were the most abundant (65.6%). Chemical analyses revealed strong similarities to the Drybones Bay and Mud Lake kimberlites which are situated 50 to >100 km to the northeast, roughly aligned with prominent glacially streamlined landform flowsets in this field area. Results suggest there is little evidence for undetected kimberlite outcrop or sub-crop in the study area.

Flandreau, Marc, Stefano Pietrosanti, and Carlotta Schuster. Why do Sovereign Borrowers Post Collateral? Evidence from the 19th Century. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, October 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp167.

Abstract:
This paper explores the reasons why sovereign borrowers post collateral. Such behavior is paradoxical because conventional interpretations of collateral stress repossession of the assets pledged as the key to securing lenders against information asymmetries and moral hazard. However, repossession is generally difficult in the case of sovereign debt and in some cases impossible. Nevertheless, such sovereign “hypothecations” have a long history and are again becoming very popular today in developing countries. To explain sovereign collateralization, we emphasize an informational channel. Posting collateral produces information on opaque borrowers by displaying borrowers’ behavior and resources. We support this interpretation by examining the hypothecation “mania” of 1849-1875, when sovereigns borrowing in the London Stock Exchange pledged all kinds of intangible revenues. Yet, at that time, sovereign immunity fully protected both sovereigns and their assets and possessions. Still, we show that hypothecations significantly decreased the cost of sovereign debt. To explain how, we stress the pledges’ role in documenting sovereigns’ wealth and the management of revenue streams. Based on an exhaustive library of bond prospectuses collected from primary sources, matched with a panel of sovereign bond yields and an innovative measure of sovereign fiscal transparency, we show that collateral minutely described in debt covenants served to document and monitor sovereign resources and development prospects. Encasing this information in contracts written by lawyers served to certify the quality of the resulting data disclosure process, explaining investors’ readiness to pay a premium.

FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OF TITANIUM-CLAD BIMETALLIC STEEL PLATE WITH DIFFERENT INTERFACIAL CONDITIONS. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/icass2020.p.273.

Full text
Abstract:
Titanium-clad (TC) bimetallic steel is a type of high-performance steel, with high corrosion resistance attributed to the titanium alloy and economy as well as excellent mechanical properties resulted from structural steel. Such advanced bimetallic steel is suitable for marine structures, bridges, and buildings exposed to the highly corrosive environment. This paper aims to clarify the high cycle fatigue properties of the hot-rolled TC bimetallic steel with two interface shear strengths of 40MPa and 140MPa. Their stress-strain curves were obtained by the tensile coupon tests. The fatigue S-N curves of TC bimetallic steel at a stress ratio of 0.1 are introduced, which show excellent fatigue performance compared with structural steel. In addition, the hot-rolled TC bimetallic steel with 140 MPa interface shear strength has 21% improvement in fatigue performance than the other one. Despite this, the influence of the interfacial conditions on the high cycle fatigue performance is generally limited. Finally, the S-N curves suitable for these two kinds of TC bimetallic steel are suggested. The research outcomes can provide a reference for understanding the fatigue behaviour of the TC bimetallic steel and the selection of different interfacial conditions in structural engineering
