Abstract:
Nine different formats of a street map were designed to test effects of contrast between city blocks, streets and street names. The position of the streets and their names remained constant. The contrast between city blocks, streets and names was varied by using combinations of black, white and grey in the designs. Four different map reading tasks were used to test each of the nine formats: 288 undergraduate students were tested on the 36 combinations of format and task. Λ two-way analysis of variance was conducted. The means were analysed using Tukey's HSD test. Both factors were found to be significant at the 0.01 level, indicating that variations in the formats significantly influenced performance on the various map-reading tasks.

Abstract:
This paper explores a method of generating panoramic street strip image map which is called as “Pano-Street” here and contains both sides, ground surface and overhead part of a street with a sequence of 360° panoramic images captured with Point Grey’s Ladybug3 mounted on the top of Mitsubishi MMS-X 220 at 2m intervals along the streets in urban environment. On-board GPS/IMU, speedometer and post sequence image analysis technology such as bundle adjustment provided much more accuracy level position and attitude data for these panoramic images, and laser data. The principle for generating panoramic street strip image map is similar to that of the traditional aero ortho-images. A special 3D DEM(3D-Mesh called here) was firstly generated with laser data, the depth map generated from dense image matching with the sequence of 360° panoramic images, or the existing GIS spatial data along the MMS trajectory, then all 360° panoramic images were projected and stitched on the 3D-Mesh with the position and attitude data. This makes it possible to make large scale panoramic street strip image maps for most types of cities, and provides another kind of street view way to view the 360° scene along the street by avoiding the switch of image bubbles like Google Street View and Bing Maps Streetside.

Abstract:
By extracting and simplifying the characteristics of commercial streets with arcades (Qilou) in Nanning, the tissue map of Qilou streets which reflects the urban morphology, including the road network form, block scale, building scale and other characteristics in a hot and humid area is obtained. In addition, the sunshine simulation is performed by using sunshine design software in an environment comprising streets with arcades to simulate street sunlight environments under various conditions. The relationship among street height-to-width ratio, sunshine hours, and street orientation angle is achieved by nonlinear fitting analysis. Then, a model is established to adjust the street height-to-width ratio based on sunshine requirement and street orientation. The finding indicated that when the street is north–south, it is suggested that the street height-to-width ratio is 0.95–1.13 to reduce sunshine hours effectively, and when the street is east–west, it is proposed that one side of the street should have a recessed space to improve the thermal conditions. The results of this study can serve as the specific guidelines that can be adopted in the redesign and reformation of commercial streets with arcades to achieve thermal comfort of Qilou streets in hot and humid areas.

Abstract:
Abstract. Based on the basic judgment that commercial buildings have a high demand for traffic accessibility, this study analyses the integration degree and selectivity of the streets and alleys in the spatial syntax. It superimposes the different drawing forms of the buildings along the streets in the whole map of the Qianlong capital. Determine the public attributes that may correspond to the four architectural forms along the street during the Qianlong Dynasty in the Qianmen area of Beijing, and then analyse the trend of commercial activities in this area. According to the degree of agglomeration of commerce along the street, the commercial front street and back street of the area are distinguished, providing a research basis for the development context and path of commercial activities in the area.

Abstract:
Thesis: M.C.P., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Urban Studies and Planning, 2014.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.

This thesis explores the feasibility of creating a street-level air quality map, whereby cyclists gather data through a participatory sensing process as they ride around the city. I explore two primary areas required for the successful creation of such an initiative: the state of the technology for portable air quality monitors, and the likelihood of cyclist participation in gathering data. To test the technology, I conduct experiments in Singapore and Mexico City to determine whether a small, relatively inexpensive monitor can gauge variation in concentrations according to distance from traffic and route choice. I then survey cyclists in Singapore and Mexico, assessing level of interest in participating to gather air quality data, conceptions about local air quality, travel behavior, pollution health symptoms, and acceptable price point for a personal air quality monitor. If such a project were implemented, the data could serve planners and policy-makers in several fields, including transportation, public space, and public health. They could also be used as a powerful advocacy tool, as groups campaign for better cycling infrastructure and healthier cities. Citizens could use this air quality information to minimize their exposure when choosing their travel routes.

Abstract:
This dissertation project aims to deal with all these problems by proposing a platform to support people with reduced mobility. There are systems that deal with the problem of urban accessibility through sets of data provided by certified authorities. Such systems have the limit of not being updated in real time and do not extend the possibility of adding information to all participants. From this comes the idea of creating a new application. The application purpose is to collect information on urban accessibility from all users and guarantee, by applying the concept of crowd-sensing, a high level of data trustworthiness. To be effective in its goal, the application must be easy to use and accessible to everyone at anytime and anywhere. For this reason, the software will be developed around two must-haves that form the main basis for today's communication: Internet and smartphones.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present study is to analyze the data quality of OpenStreetMap geodatabase in a GIS environment; the case of study is a region of Sri Lanka. OpenStreetMap (OSM) is one of the most well-known crowd-sourced products, providing a global map base thanks to the mapping activity carried out by volunteers all around the world. As the quality of collected information remains a significant concern for the geospatial information community and in geospatial data management, a qualitative and quantitative assessment of OSM data is of great importance, due to the large diffusion and adoption of this kind of volunteered geospatial information (VGI). This study concerns the OSM dataset currently available for the Mawanella area in Sri Lanka and has been performed in an open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) environment, QGIS. OSM vector files are the raw materials for the analysis. The evaluation has been realized considering the main quality attributes to be maintained in a mapping product, either based on intrinsic properties and on the relationship with official databases available for the same area. The results of the study suggest that the current quality of OSM maps in the study area is fairly good, but completeness is poor and must be improved.
