ABSTRACT Oritavancin activity was tested against 15,764 gram-positive isolates collected from 246 hospital centers in 25 countries between 2005 and 2008. Organisms were Staphylococcus aureus (n = 9,075), coagulase-negative staphylococci (n = 1,664), Enterococcus faecalis (n = 1,738), Enterococcus faecium (n = 819), Streptococcus pyogenes (n = 959), Streptococcus agalactiae (n = 415), group C, G, and F streptococci (n = 84), and Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 1,010). Among the evaluated staphylococci, 56.7% were resistant to oxacillin. The vancomycin resistance rate among enterococci was 21.2%.

Vertical transmission of Streptococcus agalactiae can cause neonatal infections. A culture test in the late stage of pregnancy is used to screen for the presence of maternal S. agalactiae for intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis. For the test, a vaginal–rectal sample is recommended to be enriched, followed by bacterial identification. In some cases, Enterococcus faecalis overgrows in the enrichment culture. Consequently, the identification test yields false-negative results. Bacteriophages (phages) can be used as antimicrobial materials. Here, we explored the feasibility of using phages to minim

DNA sequencing of whole bacterial genomes has revealed that the entire set of mobile genes (mobilome) represents as much as 25% of the bacterial genome. Despite the huge availability of sequence data, the functional analysis of the mobile genetic elements (MGEs) is rarely reported. Therefore, established laboratory protocols are needed to investigate the biology of this important part of the bacterial genome. Conjugation is a mechanism of horizontal gene transfer which allows the exchange of MGEs among strains of the same or different bacterial species. In streptococci and enterococci, integra
