Soil salinization and alkalization is a key factor limiting the sustainable development of global agriculture. The natural succession of vegetation in saline-alkali soil is an effective method for improving of saline-alkali soil, and microorganisms play an important role in vegetation growth. This study analysed the microbial community structure and diversity of saline-alkali tolerant vegetation rhizosphere soil in northeastern China where natural succession of saline-alkali tolerant vegetation has occurred, using high-throughput sequencing technology. We found that the community structures of

Filamentous green microalgae of the genus Zygnema belong to the most common primary producers in the polar hydro-terrestrial environment. In such unstable habitats, organisms are subject to various stress factors, e.g., freeze-thaw cycles, desiccation and high irradiation levels. However, the stress resistance mechanisms that enable Zygnema spp. to thrive in this extreme environment are only partially understood. Therefore, polar Zygnema spp. were examined under various stress conditions using both field samples and cultures. Moreover, molecular phylogeny methods were applied that provided fir

Filamentous aeroterestrial green algae genus Klebsormidium occurs in a very wide range of freshwater and terrestrial habitats. Recent results of molecular investigations led to the finding that the diversity within this genus is far greater than expected on the basis of the morphological features, and that the traditional phenotypic species concept is insufficient. I tried to differentiate phylogenetic lineages within the genus Klebsormidium by thein different biogeographical distribution and environmental preferences. In 1934, Baas Becking mentioned hypothesis "Everything is everywhere, but the environment selects", which still contains three current controversial issues in protists: (1) disunity in distribution patterns, (2) species concepts, and (3) the ecological preferences. In recent years, protistan biogeography and diversity has become a highly debated topic. Two opposite hypotheses have been proposed: the ubiquity model, which emphasizes the cosmopolitan distribution of protists with low global diversity; and the moderate endemicity model, which admits the existence of endemic species with limited d

This chapter examines the evolution of photosynthetic organisms on land, noting that the vast majority of photosynthetic life was confined to aquatic habitats for the first three billion years of their existance. It discusses genomic novelty, stating that this was common in streptophyte algae, which developed increasingly complex multicellular forms with a wider range of tissue and organ types. It also looks at bryophytes, noting how these dominated land flora from 450 to 360 Ma, which is a relatively warm, wet period favouring the rise of pteridophytes. The chapter reviews how high photosynth
