Extensile fluidic artificial muscles (EFAMs) are soft actuators known for their large ranges of extension, low weight, and blocked forces comparable to those of pneumatic cylinders. EFAMs have yet to be studied in a way that thoroughly focuses on their manufacturing, experimental characterization, and modeling. A fabrication method was developed for production of two EFAMs. The quasi-static axial force response of EFAMs to varying displacement was measured by testing two specimens under isobaric conditions over a pressure range of 103.4–517.1 kPa (15–75 psi) with 103.4 kPa (15 psi) increments.

Abstract:
Citrus, like many other tropical and subtropical fruit are sensitive to chilling temperatures. However, application of a pre-storage temperature conditioning (CD) treatment at 16°C for 7 d or of a hot water brushing (HWB) treatment at 60°C for 20 sec remarkably enhances chilling tolerance and reduces the development of chilling injuries (CI) upon storage at 5°C. In the current research, we proposed to identify and characterize grapefruit genes that are induced by CD, and may contribute to the acquisition of fruit chilling tolerance, by two different molecular approaches: cDNA array analysis an

Abstract:
Salmonella enterica is a worldwide food-borne pathogen, which regularly causes large outbreaks of food poisoning. Recent outbreaks linked to consumption of contaminated foods with low water-activity, have raised interest in understanding the factors that control fitness of this pathogen to dry environment. Consequently, the general objective of this study was to extend our knowledge on desiccation tolerance and long-term persistence of Salmonella. We discovered that dehydrated STm entered into a viable-but-nonculturable state, and that addition of chloramphenicol reduced bacterial survival. Th

Abstract:
There was a need to define the spatial density of stress-corrosion crack arrays that develop in operating gas-transmission pipelines and in laboratory test specimens of line-pipe steel, to improve understanding of the factors that control the density and provide data to test models of pipeline cracking. Within the broad definition of crack density are included the locations, numbers, lengths, depths, and degree of linkage of cracks. An analysis has been conducted of location, numbers, lengths, depths, and degree of linkage of stress-corrosion crack colonies in samples from the field and from l

Background Early detection and identification of faulty greenhouse operation is essential, if losses are to be minimized by taking immediate corrective actions. Automatic detection and identification would also free the greenhouse manager to tend to his other business. Original objectives The general objective was to develop a method, or methods, for the detection, identification and accommodation of faults in the greenhouse. More specific objectives were as follows: 1. Develop accurate systems models, which will enable the detection of small deviations from normal behavior (of sensors, contro

Abstract:
To elucidate the role of ROS in the tri-trophic interactions in postharvest biocontrol systems a detailed molecular and biochemical investigation was undertaken. The application of the yeast biocontrol agent Metschnikowia fructicola, microarray analysis was performed on grapefruit surface wounds using an Affymetrix Citrus GeneChip. the data indicated that 1007 putative unigenes showed significant expression changes following wounding and yeast application relative to wounded controls. Abstract:
Hydrostatic testing is widely used to demonstrate pipe-line integrity. The test has been used to validate the maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) of lines being commissioned. As existing pipelines age, the test is also being used to revalidate integrity following repairs. Repeated hydrotesting over some interval of time is also being considered as a regulatory measure. Both the initial hydrotest and subsequent repeated hydrotesting introduce the possibility for flaw growth, with low cycle fatigue being an obvious concern. Historically established safe operation points to the adequacy o
