Full textThis study examined the relationship between stress and coping in a sample of women simultaneously occupying the roles of wife, mother and paid employee. The sample comprised 95 subjects recruited through medical practices. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected by means of self report questionnaires. Quantitative measures included the recent version of the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (Levenstein, Prantera, Varvo, Scribano, Berta, Luzi & Andreoli, 1992), the Reward and Concern Scales developed by Baruch & Barnett ( 1986) as a measure of role quality, the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (Carver, Scheier & Weintraub, 1989) and the Mastery Scale (Pearlin & Schooler, 1978). A measure of social support was developed for this study. Qualitative data was collected via 7 open ended questions. Responses were analysed for frequency of reference to emergent themes. · Stress ·constituted the dependant variable and role quality, coping, control and social - support the ~ndependent variables. Correlational and Anova analyses were performed to test for relationships between stress and the demographic variables. No significant relationships were found. Subjects who had complained of stress or been diagnosed as stressed by their doctors were classified as highly stressed, whereas those who had neither complained nor been so diagnosed were classified as low stressed. A t-test analysis revealed significant differences between the two groups. However, 42% of those women who had neither complained nor been diagnosed as stressed recorded stress levels above the mean. The most usual manifestations of stress revealed a cluster of factors related to time pressure and overload. Further t-test analyses were conducted to test for differences in stress levels between subjects scoring low in role quality, coping abilities, control and social support, compared with those scoring high on these variables. Poor role quality was .associated with a significantly higher stress level.

Full textThe lifestyle and personality changes of 61 participants after a five day stress management programme were assessed. A pre-and post-programme lifestyle questionnaire was developed to investigate changes in areas covered on the programme: nutrition, fitness, health beliefs and behaviour, relationships, work life and coping resources. Participants were requested to complete this questionnaire before the course, and a follow-up questionnaire three weeks and six months after the course. Personality variables measured were Locus of Control, Sense of Coherence, and Type A behaviour. These variables were assessed prior to the course and at the six month follow-up. The effect of these personality variables on lifestyle and lifestyle change was examined. Three weeks after the course, significant changes in the self-reported lifestyle measures of nutrition, health beliefs and behaviour, and fitness were found. From the pretest to the six-month follow-up, significant changes in nutrition, health beliefs and behaviour, and relationships were found. The majority of delegates reported positive attitudes towards goals set on the course after three weeks and six months. No change was demonstrated in personality variables from the pre-test to six months after the course. No relationship was found between personality variables and lifestyle or lifestyle change. Implications for future evaluations, and for stress management programmes in general are highlighted.
Human, Robyn. "The impact of acute psychological stress on declarative and working memory functioning." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14616.
Full textPrevious research has shown that stress affects processing in many different memory systems. This study aimed to investigate the effects of acute psychosocial stress on declarative memory (DM) and working memory (WM) performance, and to explore whether sex differences exist under stress in these two memory systems. DM was assessed using cued recall and recognition of a verbal paired-associates list. WM was assessed using an n-back test with various difficulty levels. One hundred (42 males) undergraduate psychology students from the University of Cape Town were recruited. Phase of menstrual cycle and oral contraceptive use were controlled for in female participants. Participants took part in two sessions, 24 hours apart, each beginning after 16h00. Day 1 involved learning and immediate cued recall of the word pairs, and completing a practice n-back protocol. During Day 2, 45 participants were exposed to a psychosocial stressor and 41 were exposed to a relaxation period. Physiological and self-report measures of stress were taken at three intervals pre- and post-experimental manipulation. Participants then completed delayed cued recall and recognition tests for the previously-learned word pairs, and the full version of the n-back test. Data were analysed only for participants characterised as 'cortisol responders' following the experimental manipulation. The final sample included 57 participants (30 males). With regard to DM, stress did not affect either delayed cued recall or recognition performance in either men or women. With regard to WM, stress negatively affected accuracy among men, but not women. These results are largely consistent with previous literature, but also elucidate a sex difference in working memory performance under stress (viz., while men's performance is negatively affected by stress, women show improved performance). The study provides important evidence for sex differences in WM performance under stress, and highlights several methodological issues that should be addressed in future studies.

An experimental design was used to investigate the relationship between stress and eyewitness memory in adolescents (Experiment 1) and young adults (Experiment 2). Psychosocial stress was induced using a public speaking task. As eyewitness outcome measures, participants were asked to provide a physical description and to make a lineup identification of a) a research assistant with whom they had interacted under stressful circumstances (prior to public speaking), and b) a research assistant with whom they had interacted under neutral circumstances. Participants also responded to questions that tested their memory for central and peripheral details of the interactions.

In this thesis, we propose a method measuring thin film stress on 8-inch substrate. The cantilever method is used as the basis for the improvement of the measuring system. We use dual electron beam gun evaporation with ion-beam assisted deposition to evaporate optical thin film on 8-inch substrate. Placing 8-inch substrate on the stage in vertical way and scanning the surface profile. We calculate the deflection of 8-inch substrate according to the displacement of reflection point, and then get the value of the thin film stress. We use Macleod simulation software and other measuring system to verify the results of the experiment. The measuring system has the advantage of instantaneity and easy-use.

The 21 September 1999 Chi-chi earthquake had much influence on Taiwan; in addition, it resulted in obvious variation of the stress in surroundings, increasing the possibility of detonating the nearby faults, such as the Mei-shan Fault, the Chu-kou Fault, the the Chia-yi Blind Fault, and the Jiou-cyong-keng Fault, to move and to release energy. In order to evaluate the possibility that the Chia-yi Blind Fault release massive energy in the future, this research took advantage of the data about the earthquake in Taiwan which were collected by Jheng-shih-nan and Academia Sinica from Jan. 1906 to Apr. 2006, through the sift of related position and energy, to calculate the changes of the static stress which were resulted from the earthquakes near the Chia-yi Blind Fault. Hereby, we can realize t the influence upon the Coulomb Failure Stress Change towards the earthquake in the future.

Because of the educational need, the nursing teachers, selected or appointed, have been in demand in the middle schools or upper levels since the 1950s. Now this system will become a history by reason of the educational reform, because of the implement of “ post-middle school education mutual core lesson” at the present. Until the new system is fully established, the job stress of nursing teachers hasn’t been decreased but been increased. This study is to discuss the current situation of nursing teachers’ job stress. This paper focused on nursing teachers in Taiwan as its object, and employed a paper survey. The title of the survey is “The Magnitude of Nursing-Teachers’ Job Stress”. The content of the survey is divided into three major parts. The first part contains the personal information of the teacher; the second part contains my nursing teacher’s job stress survey; the third part is designed as open questions, which mainly focus on applicable strategies for the largest stress of the teachers and how to face it. Here are the results of the survey: 1.The job stress of the nursing teacher is average. 2. The nursing teachers show variations among each job stress dimension. 3. The job stress of the nursing teachers differs because of differences in background. 4. The job stress of the nursing teachers differs because of differences in environment. 5. The largest stress of the nursing teachers comes from: the military nursing system is deficient, job right is insecure; the retirement system is incomplete, there’s no job protection; and the way of using “problem solution” and “group support” when facing job stress.

Full textThe current study sought to investigate the relationship between stress and illness, while examining the effects of daily stressors, depression, hardiness, social support and coping skills on this relationship. The information gathered was then used to design a time and cost effective questionnaire to predict people prone to stress-related illness. This questionnaire has been called the Stress Fitness Scale. The subjects (n = 44) were split into three groups (healthy, ill, and neither ill nor healthy) according to their scores on Gurin's Psychosomatic Symptom List for non-parametric statistical analysis. Scores on the Hardiness Scale, Perceived Social Support Friends and Family, Beck Depression Inventory, COPE, Hassles and Uplifts Scale and Life Experiences were analysed and significant differences were found between the ill and healthy groups in all five areas using a Mann-Whitney U test. An intercorrelation matrix was performed and significant correlation was found between Stress Fitness and the other scales, although not for all the sub-scales. Many of these correlations corresponded with the differences found between the two groups using the Mann-Whitney U test. Item analysis was performed on the Stress Fitness Scale. Significant inter correlation was found for all the items of the Prone sub-scale, and all but three items of the Protect sub-scale. Although further research is necessary, from this limited study the Stress Fitness Scale appears to provide a time and cost effective way of predicting people prone to stress-related illness.

Action Research on Relieving Elementary Schoolteacher’s Working Stress Abstract This research aims at initiating and organizing a teachers’ co-development group, probing into teachers’ working stress and related problems through action research, and seeking effective strategies to relieve the stress. The researcher chooses the school she works for as the research site, all the first grade class teachers as the participants. Data are collected through participant observation, interviews, and document analysis. The following conclusions are drawn through this research: 1. The crucial elements of organizing a teachers’ co-development group are objective(s), participant(s), and the “group catalyst”. The group can make itself well operated by applying two major modes: theme-centered discussion and study group. 2. Major difficulties and challenges faced by a teachers’ co-development group are recruitment of group members, role play of the “group catalyst”, location for the meetings/activities, and individual participant schedule. 3. Participant’s working stress comes from various aspects, such as teaching work, administrative work, students, parents, interpersonal relationships, and professional careers. Even facing up to the same stress source, different schoolteachers suffer from different stress and also have different feelings. 4. Participant’s working stress indeed affects the co-development group she is in — the participating aspirations and the atmosphere of the group’s operation mainly. 5. Although a co-development group makes schoolteachers understand stress & related subjects, learn some stress-relieving strategies, clarify the stress sources, change their evaluation about working stress and relieve their reactions to working stress, and produces actual help in terms of relieving working stress, its effectiveness varies with different schoolteachers. 6. Although all of the four stress-relieving strategies( doing exercise, proceeding time management, relaxing, and solving problems) can help the participant with relieving the working stress, its effectiveness varies with different strategies. Keywords: teachers’ co-development group, teachers’ working stress, stress-relieving strategy, action research

In recent years, job stress, fatigue problem, has been attention to the enterprise and the public. The Institute of Occupational Safety & Health has build up a model of stress management services in the company and impetus of enterprise stress management service plan in 2008 and 2009. These projects have significant meanings on promoting stress management practices in the field. The participation in research project in 2008 of researcher had start up this action research. Based on the experience in IOSH project in 2008, researcher integrated the related resources and then planed and executed enterprise stress management service plan. The structure and context of this service plan was based on tertiary prevention concept. On the one hand, the researcher expects to implement enterprise stress management service plan. On the other hand, the researcher expects to solve the actual problems in the field, including the poor utilization of staff consultation, and the problems in the research in 2008. Therefore, researcher chose action research as research method. The researcher got problem-solving experience and professional growth through the constantly cycles of the action research. From the course of problem, action, authenticate to introspection, the researcher solved problems and generated knowledge. There were six companies participated the enterprise stress management service plan. There are four steps in the action research: 1.Been Consensus: including "advocate the program, confirm the willingness, plan the progress of the program, starting to advocate activities of the program". 2.Assessment Stress Risk: including" stress scale survey and personal result report, group analysis report, the stress scale results explanation and stress management lecture, individual interpretation of the result and consultation".3.Develop Action Plans: including "solve the target problem, develop action plans (Primary prevention- by lecture, advocacy and stress source analysis; Secondary prevention –by case management and group courses or workshops; Tertiary prevention- by employee assistance programs), provide feedback chance to employees." 4. Implementation and Evaluation: including "tracking the implementation of the effectiveness and periodic review and adjustment ".The conclusion and suggestion of this research is available for next action research, and continuingly practice in the field.

Crosslinking reaction of epoxy resins has been a foccus of researcch interestsfor many years. Most of the studies considered effects of composition, cure temp, cure time and so on. In this work, we studied the effect of shear fields. Shear flows caused by different shear rates have little effects when conversion is less than 0.4. Many significant differences were observed when cure reactionscontinue to high level. Different reaction rates caused by shear effects resultin different changes of viscosity, glass transition temperatures and molecular weights. Effects of shear fields are different for the rubber filled and neat resin systems For the neat resin systems, reaction rate is high at lower shear rate. For the rubber filled systems, faster reaction is observed with higher shear rates. Morphology changes caused by shear rates on the rubber filled systems are apparent. When fast reaction rate occurs at higher shear rates, viscosityrises whicch slows down the diffusion rates of rubber molecules, and phase separation is incomplete.

The study aims to investigate the status quo of first-time mothers stressor, stress coping strategies and stress response and the different situations when the first-time mother is supported by different partners. With first-time mothers whose first-born child is under 2.5 years old as the sample of this study, it adopted the questionnaire survey research method and purposive sampling to find out the objects for questionnaire and obtained 164 valid samples. The major research tools included Questionnaire on First-time Mothers’ Mental Health made by the author and Psychosomatic Health Scale edited by Xu Wenyao (1999). The data were analyzed by statistical analysis including descriptive statistics, chi-square test and independent sample t-test. Based on the statistical analysis of valid data, it came to the following conclusions: 1. for first-time mothers, the stressor mainly involved three aspects which are arranged in order, namely, life changes, maternal works and economy. 2. the percentages of “maintaining family peace and refraining discontents” in the aspect of self-identification pressure source, “couples who seldom stay along or do not get along well” and “problems between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law” in the aspect of relation pressure source and “the cost of baby sitters” in economic aspect of pressure source in passive care and assistance group are all significantly higher than those in active care and assistance group. 3. in the experience of self relieving stress, the percentage of “finding out problems and immediately handling them by oneself” in active care and assistance group is significantly higher than that in passive care and assistance group. 4. in the issue of seeking other institutions or objects for help, the percentage of “providing technology information on taking care of babies” in passive care and assistance group is significantly higher than that in active care and assistance group. 5. in the experience of mental health activities, the percentage of “the degree of helpfulness while participating mental health activities” in active care and assistance group is significantly higher than that in passive care and assistance group. 6. in the experience of psychological counseling or therapy, the percentages of “believing psychologists can not really help me” and “high charges” are significantly higher than those in active care and assistance group. 7. the percentage of “overall effect of relieving pressures” in active care and assistance group is significantly higher than that in passive care and assistance group. 8. the aspects of “overall state of well-being physically and mentally”, “the degree of satisfaction towards the health of oneself”, “life quality” and “relatively less negative emotions” in active care and assistance group are significantly superior to those in passive care and assistance group. According the abovementioned research findings, the following suggestions are proposed as follows: as for first-time fathers and mothers, they should pay attention to the needs of first-time mothers and create communication environment for themselves. As regards related government departments and social institutions, they should promote mental health activities for first-time fathers and mothers, integrate and make full use of social resources and attach importance to the mental health service.

HR organizational change has been an important issue, it is not only affect the future development of the organizational, but also affect their rights and interests of individual employees, the successful implementation of organizational change can be nothing more than shaping the tensions, top management support, persuade opponents, stage, but the company or organization has ignored the feelings of employees and employee stress. Therefore, this study was to investigate the organizational change under the pressure and expectations for the staff to adapt to changes in the status of the working pressure to Voluntary Soldiers as samples, to understand the essence of the case under this conduct, would be different from previous studies. The results showed that no significant impact on organizational change to work pressure, this result is different from previous studies, due to the magnitude of the task force that military organizational change had little effect on the work pressure to the original task. In addition, organizational change and job stress have significantly influence on adapting the job stress which display the sample group have certain insecurity to adjusting and adapting for the work pressure after expecting organizational change. Therefore, to recommend the military in the implementation of organizational changes to be more strengthen advocacy and listen the junior officers voices, which to avoid counter-productive.

Out of these five senses, smell is the most difficult to describe but yet the profoundest. Life esthetics exists not only in our daily life but also connects with it strongly. The purpose of the present study is to experience life esthetics through smell, and we can further experience and discuss life esthetics through the learning of aromatherapy and stress relief. Although aromatherapy was used in China about two thousand years ago, the aromatherapy we are using today is actually from Europe. Aromatherapy is regarded as one of the emerging fashion activities in recent years. People nowadays are busy with career and family matters. As a result, they end up feeling stressed out. As a matter of fact, beauty can be found everywhere and anytime in life. Esthetics is connected tightly with life. Therefore, it is not necessary to go to an art gallery to find the presence of beauty. As long as we can calm down through the process of aromatherapy and stress relief and accept the way we are, we can find the meaning and true value of our lives. When we start to feel the beauty surrounding us, we start to realize what esthetics is. Essential oil is the most important element in aromatherapy. The use of essential oil through smell can relax our body. The purpose of the present study is to help people experience life esthetics through the smell relaxation process of aromatherapy, the method of survey interviewing and the method of individual interviewing. The result of the present study can help future researchers who are interested in aromatherapy understand this field from a different perspective

Calligraphy writing is an elegant type of life fun. An interest is needed to support insistence on practicing calligraphy. Practicing calligraphy can lead to an improvement in not only abilities but also self-confidence in an individual. Long-term practice of calligraphy allows the writer to enter an emotional state that is peaceful, stable, relieved, and relaxed, which can in turn alleviate anxiety and tension, help maintain physical and mental health, and also nourish a better character. It is said “Calligraphy carries an attitude and reflects the mind of the writer; one has to consider the profound and intricate variations of calligraphy while writing calligraphy with the heart”. As commonly seen, most calligraphy writers tend to have a disposition characterized by high self-discipline, low anxiety, high stability, and less suspicion. This study investigates the relations of calligraphy writing to individual temperament, health preservation, nature, and meditation. Besides, this study also probes into renowned calligraphy works, with the focus placed on writer’s affective expressions, healing of sorrows, release of personality and potentiality, expressions of the feeling of missing, and balancing in the event of physical discomfort. This study consists of four chapters. The content of each chapter is summarized as follows: Chapter 1: Introduction. This chapter introduces the research motivations, objectives, methodology, structure, scope, and terminology. Chapter 2: This chapter discusses theories of calligraphy with a focus on its relations to temperament, health preservation, nature, and mediation. Abstract The main purpose of this research is to study the preschool directors’s work stress, where does the stress comes from, how the director is influenced and how to deal with it. The author of this research herself, who has been a preschool director for more than 10 years, who had interviewed six private preschool directors with different angles about the stress topic according to her personal experiences and then did this qualitative research. The motives to do the research includes: 1. The operation pressure of preschool under the trend of fewer children. 2. The change of preschool policy. 3. The importance of work stress management for preschool directors. This research finds out the primary work stress of preschool directors as followed: 1. Excessive demands from parents. 2. Children’s safety issues. 3. Unexpected situations in the preschool. 4. The transformation of education policy. Being under the stressful work environment for long period of time will cause grave physical and mental damages to preschool directors, as a result, their family life qualities are severely affected; therefore, principles are likely to suffer a breakdown. In addition, after interviewing those six principles, this research shows that they can deal with those stress by accepting and resolving the problems. Their strategies as followed: 1. Being optimistic and accept it positively. 2. Taking time wisely to reschedule and adjust the pace of life style. 3. Finding ways to figure it out and altering minds. 4. Feeling the sense of achievement and restore your mindset. In conclusion, this research gives advice to directors how to face and release the working stress, it includes: 1. Accumulating experiences and possessing a positive altitude, staying optimistic. 2. Finding the happiness and the sense of achievement also satisfaction as well. 3. Broadening and sharing both human connection and resources. 4. Appropriate time management. 5. Developing stress-releasing habits and exercise pattern as well. Glass substrate is one of the important materials of TFT-LCD panel. The following LCD manufacturing processes are built on glass substrate and the scoring is one of the key processes. Normally, the scoring wheel material is made by using high hardness metal or diamond. The evaluation of score wheel type selection is decided by experience and experiment in the production machine to test the effect and verify the performance. Not usually to use numerical analysis method to predict the effect for score wheel type selection. This study used Vickers micro hardness tester to do glass indentation and crack test and obtain mechanical property of plastic deformation. Also used empirical formula from related scholars studied to acquire limit fracture toughness and limit stress to cause crack propagation. In numerical analysis method, applied DEFORM 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software to build modeling and set analysis parameters, material property to compare simulation and experiment result. There are two mechanisms modeling for both Vickers hardness tester indenter and glass score wheel. Simulated indenter and score wheel move down motion and contact with glass to create glass surface crack and inner crack. Compared the difference between different score load and different score wheel angle, and compared with related research of empirical formula. Compared Vickers hardness tester experiment result with FEA result. There was 8.9% error between indentation lengths with FEA result. It could predict material hardness by simulation method. There was 21% error between indentation depths with FEA result. The bigger error for indentation depth was indenter real dimension and glass restore couldn’t build accuracy depth calculation. There was 15% error between real surface crack with simulation surface and inner crack average result. For effect of different score load and different score wheel angle, compared empirical formula and FEA result. The characteristic of glass brittle material and sensitivity of crack by stress applied were contributed bigger error 13~17% and two different curves be found on median crack prediction. Analyzed and judged the effect of residual stress need to use FEA Plastic-Elastic model to get more accuracy prediction. The difference between real score wheel rolling motion on glass with FEA modeling single axis move down motion also effect the result. At modeling mechanism building and relative numerical analysis data, it could help to realize the stress distribution and crack propagation judgment. Before the actual test, the advance planning and simulation compared to existing process can be still effective information material.

Full textNew job and study opportunities were created for many people because of political changes in South Africa. This implied that many people left their homes and moved to new areas. Research indicated that 60% to 70% of first year students suffered from homesickness during their first semester at university. For some of them it was only a light experience; for others it was an intense negative experience with serious social-, academic-, and financial implications which could result in illness or even death. The role of salutogenic factors (factors that contribute to health) in the occurrence of homesickness, experienced by Afrikaans- and English speaking male and female first year students at the Rand Afrikaans Universiy, was investigated. It was found that the experience of homesickness was diminished by the salutogenic factors "sense of coherence", "self-efficacy", learned resourcefulness" and social support. These factors thus contributed to health. The factor "hardiness" did not play a salutogenic role in this study. Although the multicultural context of South Africa was not taken into account, the study should be useful in identifying students who would be prone to homesickness and illness during their first year at university.
