The study investigated 1) in vitro germination and 2) plants growth in hydroponics conditions. PHs, together with salinity, strongly affected the germination. Under saline conditions, PHs generally stimulated germination in terms of time and final rate. Plant growth and the photosynthetic performance were significantly affected at 0 g/l of salt and with high PHs addition. Hence, the saline conditions seem to be necessary to enable the resistance to the PHs stress.

Abstract New alloys have been developed that are resistant to the aggressive conditions typically encountered in oil and gas production from deep, hot, sour environments. C-ring and slow strain rate tests (SSRT) were performed to investigate the hydrogen embrittlement resistance and the effect of sulfur on the stress corrosion cracking resistance of several age-hardenable, corrosion-resistant alloys (CRA's). The alloys studied included UNS N07718, N09925, N07048, N07716, N07725, N10276, and R58640. These alloys are often specified for completion equipment for hot, sour wells where highly salin

Abstract This investigation was carried out to determine the most effective biocide inhibitor for Northern Arabian Gulf Seawater. This seawater will be used for water injection purposes for some oil fields in Kuwait. Arabian Gulf Seawater is known to be very saline during the summer months and less saline during the rainy season of spring. The biocide inhibitors were tested in a rig with six side streams biofouling monitoring tubes (SBMT). Bacterial nutrients were added to the system and carbon steel studs were placed along the tubes of the biocide evaluation test rig (BETR). After a month, a

Abstract This paper presents preliminary results of an investigation of the behavior of candidate barrier material for high level nuclear waste storage, Type 304L stainless steel, in tuff repository environmental conditions. Tuff is a densely welded, devitrified, igneous rock common to the proposed repository site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The results discussed include: irradiation corrosion tests, U-bend irradiation corrosion tests, slow strain rate tests, and bent beam stress corrosion tests. Results indicate that Type 304L stainless steel shows excellent resistance to general, localized, a

Abstract As the usage of Titanium and its alloys expands from the traditional market, alloy development is providing new materials with tailored corrosion resistance and mechanical properties for use in various corrosive environments. The corrosion resistance of titanium and its alloys is due to the presence of a thin, tenacious passive layer and the corrosion behaviour has been widely studied. Much less is known about the performance of Ti and its alloys in tribo-corrosion conditions, where corrosion occurs in association with a mechanical degradation process. Abstract Oil and gas production from highly saline reservoirs can necessitate the injection of water (wash water) to dilute the formation water and prevent halite precipitation and reduced flow through the production system. This operation may represent a potential threat due to the dissolved oxygen in the wash water, which can be exacerbated by H2S from the reservoir and/or lift gas. The present paper investigates the threats associated with the co-mingled wash water, formation fluids and lift gas with respect to common completion materials. Several scenarios were investigated: Routine produc

Abstract Geothermal drilling presents severe corrosion conditions. The high temperature and complex chemistry of deep geothermal aquifers typically combine highly saline fluids and corrosive gases such as H2S and CO2. Together these and drilling-related cyclical mechanical stresses significantly affect the performance of metallic materials used in drilling equipment. Consequently, the use of corrosion-resistant alloys with appropriate mechanical properties, such as high-strength stainless steels and precipitation-hardening nickel-base alloys, is required for this application. Abstract Replacement of bones by implants could solve major problems after accidents or because of aging. When traditional alloys are used as temporary implant devices, a second surgery is required to remove the implant after tissues have healed. It would be very advantageous if an implant material could be identified that degraded in the physiological environment after completion of the healing process. Magnesium alloys are potential candidates for use as biodegradable temporary implant devices. There are many reactions that occur adjacent to implant degradation in the body. One of these proc

The objectives that were outlined in our original proposal have largely been achieved or will be so by the end of the project in February 1995 with one exception; that of mapping cold tolerance loci based on the segregation of tolerance in the BC1 progeny population. Briefly, our goals were to 1) construct a densely populated linkage map of the citrus genome: 2) map loci important in cold and/or salt stress tolerance; and 3) characterize the expression of genes responsive to cold land salt stress. Standard salinity management theory, derived from blending thermodynamic and semi- empirical considerations leads to an erroneous perception regarding compensative interaction among salinity stress factors. The current approach treats matric and osmotic components of soil water potential separately and then combines their effects to compute overall response. With deficit water a severe yield decrease is expected under high salinity, yet little or no reduction is predicted for excess irrigation, irrespective of salinity level.
