Abstract:
AbstractAmong the many existing ways of mobility in the historical ambit, in this article we present mainly the political and religious mobility into the life of a person who lived in the IV and V centuries b.C.: Jerome of Stridon. His acting as highly erudite man, writer of many christian works, his extense travels in western and eastern lands, the assumption in important functions in the roman-helenical society and the people he lived with, point to a strong movimentation in his trajectory, characteristic of the period in point, the Late Antiquity. Jerome’s path as a hybrid individual – devout christian with a classic pagan formation, and active political and religious man on his context, represent the particularities of the late-ancient roman-oriental age, being the most important, in our perspective, the intense effervescence of ideas inside of a panorama of transformations and readaptations.Key-words: Jerome of Stridon, Political-religious mobility, Late Antiquity.

Abstract:
The aim of Stridon – Journal of Studies in Translation and Interpreting is to advance research in translation- and interpreting-related phenomena, and to publish articles on the theoretical, descriptive and applied research within the field of Translation and Interpreting Studies. Besides established authors, we will also welcome articles by new voices in the field, focusing not only on translation and interpreting, but also on interdisciplinary translation- and interpreting-related sociological, literary, cultural, historical, educational and contrastive topics. Stridon’s particular aim is to present the research involving peripheral languages and languages of limited distribution, and the research focusing or originating from central or southeastern Europe. Since, traditionally, Translation and Interpreting Studies research has prioritised the focal over the marginal, this journal would like to give voice to the perspective of the Other in Translation Studies.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the influence of women-ascetics as described by Jerome of Strydon, whose epistolary heritage together contains the greatest number of letters addressed to women. It is established that the main means of influence are financial resources, the use of which allows the nuns — Fabiola, Paula, Lea — to realize their power in various aspects. The author concludes that in addition to maintaining the material well-being of the monastic communities as a whole, the influence of individual nuns is manifested in their ability to influence the gender composition of monasticism: by creating male and female monasteries in the Holy Land, women ensured that their sisters in faith had access to Christian shrines on an equal footing with men. The work also points out that by patronizing the monasteries, the centers of intellectual activity, and individual church writers, nuns had some influence on theological life. In addition, the author emphasizes that in founding a monastery a woman vested some authority in herself, allowing her to regulate both the relationships within the community and the external interactions.

Abstract:
In this conceptual paper we look at the concept of mediation in foreign language learning from a translation studies perspective. Through an analysis of the most important European language teaching policy document, namely the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), we will study the conceptualizations of mediation and translation in the CEFR and identify elements that are important with respect to understanding translatoriality and its role in the framework. We argue that a narrow concept of translation goes against CEFR’s explicit aims of mediation. We therefore propose that the concept of translatoriality might be used instead to help teachers and learners orient to a wide variety of translatorial mediation practices while still also benefitting from well-established and widely studied strategies of professional translation and interpreting. Further collaboration between translation and interpreting trainers and foreign language teachers will be needed, as well as fieldwork research on best classroom practices, and a solid and shared conceptual basis will enhance the possibilities of combining the accumulating findings collected through fieldwork.

Abstract:
This article sheds light on translated children’s literature in Sweden during the period 2015−2020. A relatively large portion of children’s literature in Sweden (36% in 2020), from books for toddlers to young adult literature, comes from translations. It has been shown in polysystem research, that ‘semi-peripheral’ countries such as Sweden, or places having a so-called ‘dominated language’, are known to import much literature because, for example, their internal production is rather limited, which a priori is not the case in Sweden. We first present a panorama of the kinds of books that are translated to Swedish and the languages they are translated from. We then focus on the particular position in Sweden of African children’s literature from French-speaking regions and assume that French is used as a tool that enables this literature to reach a Swedish audience, as part of the global phenomena of serial books and the emerging wimmelbooks. We conclude that even if Sweden’s national production is greater than book importing and translation, there is still a not insignificant number of translated picturebooks through which authors and illustrators from French-speaking regions occupy a stable share of this production, and may in this way transport cultural values from more peripheral countries.

Abstract:
It is well-known that Joyce’s third-person narrators tend to mimic the characters’ idiolectic ways of expression. However, the rendering of characters’ idiolects through such multi-voiced narration, and therefore the way in which these characters are portrayed, has not always stood the test of translation. Especially in the early Italian translations, the rendering of multi-voiced narration suffers from the standardization of linguistic variation. As Joyce uses the characters’ idiolects as a means of characterization, this results in a flattening not only of the characters’ voices, but of their psychological traits in general as well.
The Italian retranslations, however, standardize less, show more linguistic and stylistic variety and reproduce more of the source text multi-voicedness. Retranslation can therefore be seen, in this case, as a means for re-characterization, especially when investigating female voices. As we will argue, this progressively more and more dialogical re-characterization of Joyce’s female voices can be explained by changing adequacy norms – related to an increased knowledge and understanding of narrative features in Joyce, such as the Uncle Charles Principle – and acceptability norms related to female voices that were considered obscene or socially unacceptable at the time of the first translations.

Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016MON30025/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Even before settling permanently in Bethlehem, Jerome performs routine visit to Palestine, in his desire to know in depth and direct the holy places where Christ lived. Similarly, its concern to achieve a genuine know the scriptures him to undertake the arduous learning Hebrew. The first letters of his correspondence conserved dating from 380-381, years in which the author begins precisely at Chalcis, his introduction to the language of the Old Testament. The letters then written to reflect the difficulties faced by the father of the Vulgate throughout its review of the common translations of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew moose. The questions posed by cultivated and curious corresponding learn about the content of these moose are also the cause of philological comments from the Stridonien. The letters are therefore an excellent reflection of support for analyzing interactions between source culture and target-culture by interviewing many vocabulary difficulties and interpretation faced Jerome and the commentators cited by him, when it comes to spend Hebrew text to his Greek and Latin versions. This study is interested in Hebrew questions contained in the correspondence. The emphasis in Hebrew, in letters, and even in epistolary form, raises questions about the singular representation of the Hebrew language and the culture that surrounds it, and the image of 'interpres related to this representation. The challenges inherent in the resolution of this issue is important, since they relate both to how the Hebrew Bible is understood and translated by Jerome, the intellectual categories put to use by the letter writer to meet the challenges , the dogmatic consolidation of the fourth-century Church but also to the paradoxical question of the authority of the translator. The scrutiny of Hebrew texts by Jerome raises a major contradiction between the traditional conception of the relationship between barbarians and civilized languages languages, and the idealization of a quest for the Hebraica ueritas, put on the same plane as the trip to Earth Ste. It is therefore understand why and for what a Westerner grown as Jerome embarked on the difficult translation of the Bible from Hebrew. The adoption of such a reflection angle is mobilizing historical, historical-theological and linguistic, since we must consider the relationship between Jews and Christians in the fourth century. To highlight and clarify these issues, this analysis discusses, first, the definition anew intellectual Jerome profile by standing for this, with a view to transmitting knowledge related to the Hebrew Bible . This initial assessment leads to consider, second, how the author of mania Correspondence Hebrew, and putting in a new way, this handling in relation to the structure of letters and literary and rhetorical strategies that are are deployed. Third, we sought to understand what object representation of Hebrew study emerges from the corpus studied and how Jérôme proceeded to transform this representation source of authority for the Christian dogma as for himself - ironically, as a translator. The demonstration involves a central concept to analyze Jerome's methodology, that of ἱστορία. By combining different approaches related to the Hebrew issues, this analysis seeks to demonstrate that the wealth of Jerome's correspondence is far from having been fully covered by research and that some aspects, especially the interdependence philological and ideological perspectives were still fairly extensive

Abstract:
This essay explores how various actors within politics and law look upon rural development at waterfront locations, the so-called LIS-areas, which aims at contributing to the rural municipalities’ financial and demographic development in riparian areas. The empirical material is exclusively based on court reports from the Land and Environment High Court in Sweden and debate records from the Swedish Parliament between 2012-2019 which have been analysed qualitatively. In summary, nature seems to play a small role in court decisions about exemptions from the riparian law. However, nature and scenic landscapes are being used as political arguments for or against exemptions from the riparian law. Another conclusion from the analysis is that the Swedish County Boards are pushed into a tight corner between law and politics when they retry exemptions from the riparian law in rural municipalities. Finally, there is a common political direction of will, in the Swedish Parliament today, towards delegating more power to the municipalities for deciding on building in riparian areas and that beach protection will become more selective in the future.

Abstract:

This study examines from a discourse-analytical perspective the effects arisen from the practice of commenting the Bible that was followed by two early Christian key figures: Jerome of Stridon (c. 370-420 AD) and Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD). The impact of these commentatorial works is investigated both with regarding to the way in which the very biblical text was materially (orthography, lexicon, phraseology, chapter order) handed down and to the history of its hermeneutical reception (the topics and themes which have been favored at the expense of all other possibilities). The purpose therefore is to demonstrate how powerful such commentatorial interventions are in the forming of the biblical canon and also in underpinning assumptions that the set of texts brought together under the rubric of Bible or Sacred Scriptures forms ultimately - in spite of a textual surface presenting disparities and sometimes great contradictions of linguistic, narrative or even theological character - a text which expresses just one and the same authorial design<br>Doutorado<br>Linguistica<br>Doutor em Linguística

We understand that the martyrdom of the content is present in this stereotype monastic hermit Copt, introduced by the authors of the sources, this will allow us greater strength in proving our hypothesis about the development of a patristic representation, which aimed to raise the monks as the authentic successors of the martyrs and establishes guidelines and patristic models defined for these religious and those who followed them.<br>Nesta pesquisa pretende-se demonstrar o processo de elabora??o de um estere?tipo de m?rtir para os monges eremitas coptas, atrav?s do qual acreditamos ser poss?vel analisar a representa??o hagiogr?fica elaborada para esses religiosos, a partir de vest?gios textuais encontrados nas fontes prim?rias Vita Antonii (357) e Vita Pauli (374-379), de autoria, respectivamente, de Atan?sio de Alexandria (296-373) e Jer?nimo de Estrid?o (347-420), acerca dos monges Ant?o do deserto (251-356) e Paulo de Tebas (228-330). Abstract:
This paper presents a new method for data augmentation called Stride Random Erasing Augmentation (SREA) to improve classification performance. In SREA, probability based strides of one image are pasted onto another image and also labels of both images are mixed with the same probability as the image mixing, to generate a new augmented image and augmented label. Stride augmentation overcomes limitations of the popular random erasing data augmentation method, where a random portion of an image is erased with 0 or 255 or the mean of a dataset without considering the location of the important feature(s) within the image. A variety of experiments have been performed using different network flavours and the popular datasets including fashion-MNIST, CIFAR10, CIFAR100 and STL10. The experiments showed that SREA is more generalized than both the baseline and random erasing method. Furthermore, the effect of stride size in SREA was investigated by performing experiments with different stride sizes. Random stride size showed better performance. SREA outperforms the baseline and random erasing especially on the fashion-MNIST dataset. To enable the reuse, reproduction and extension of SREA, the source code is provided in a public git repository https://github.com/kmr2017/stride-aug.

Abstract:
Traditional analysis of running gait utilizes averaged biomechanical data from several strides to generate a mean curve. This curve is then used to define the average picture of a runners gait. However, such measures are frequently accompanied by time normalization, which results in a loss of temporal variations in the gait patterns. An examination of stability requires analysis of both time and position, therefore loss of such information makes stability analysis difficult. On the contrary, the use of a dynamical systems approach for gait analysis allows for a better understanding of how variations in gait pattern change over time. In the current study runners ran on a treadmill, with both a flat and uneven surface, at a self selected speed. Three-dimensional position data was captured for 11 different anatomical locations at a frequency of 120 Hz using a Qualysis motion capture system. The data was first shifted to a lumbar coordinate system to account for low frequency drift attributed to the subjects’ drift on the treadmill. Since all of the markers were rigidly connected, via the subject, the movements and variations of certain components of the 33-dimensional measurements were not independent. As a result, it was possible to reduce the dimensionality of the transformed data using singular value decomposition techniques. The primary components were then analyzed using the method of delay embeddings to extract geometric information, revealing the natural structure found in the data as a result of the periodicity of each running stride. A nearest neighbor mean stride orbit was then computed to create a reference orbit, so that deviations from the mean stride orbit can be measured. The expectation was that a more stable running configuration would lead to smaller deviations from the mean stride orbit. On-going work that will be reported includes: (i) analysis of running stability related to the reference stride comparator, (ii) compensation of lumbar centroid dynamics, (iii) reconstructions using one dimension from the lumbar centroid transformed data, and (iv) consideration of transients, fatigue, adaptation, etc.

Full text
Abstract:
Evaluation of walking stability is essential for the elderly population to prevent possible falls due to degradation of their walking stability caused by aging. Previous studies mainly focused on center of pressure (COP) and center of body mass (COM) and their relationship during walking. However COM can not be directly measured and existing COP parameters are mainly investigated within one stride and their effectiveness is not conclusive. In this study, new parameters are proposed based on normalized cross-correlation of subsequent strides (NCSS), derived from comparison of subsequent strides of foot plantar pressure. The mean and standard deviation of NCSS are calculated for three walking conditions that are progressively less stable (1 - normal walking, 2 - walking with eyes closed, and 3 - walking with eyes closed after being spun around) for six healthy subjects. Results show that the NCSS can effectively distinguish normal walking (1) and the less stable walking with eyes closed after being spun around (3). The mean of NCSS decreases from stable to less stable walking conditions, whereas the corresponding standard deviation of NCSS increases. For each subject the value of NCSS of walking with eyes closed (2) is between those of the other two walking conditions (1 and 3), although the value varies somewhat, depending on the controllability and adaptability of the subject.
