Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University
The purpose of this study was to examine the life of Phyllis Young (b. 1925) and her contributions to string education. The researcher explored her ancestry, childhood, education, personal life, and career as a cellist and string pedagogue. The study is divided into a prologue, five chapters, and an epilogue, and ends with her retirement from the University of Texas String Project in 1993. Phyllis Young, a faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin from 1953- 2007, was Professor of Cello from 1974-2007 and the Parker C. Fielder Regents Professor in Music from 1991-2007. She authored two books, Playing the String Game (1978) and The String Play (1986), and served as national president of the American String Teachers Association. She received that organization's Distinguished Service Award (1984) and the Paul Rolland Lifetime Achievement Award (2002). In 2006, the American String Teachers Association established an award in her name, The Phyllis Young Outstanding Studio Teacher Award. For forty years (1953-1993) Young was associated with the University of Texas String Project, a teacher training program that continues to serve as a model for numerous string programs nation-wide. She was director of the project from 1965-93. Young has given lecture-demonstrations, master classes, and workshops for string teachers in thirtythree countries on six continents and in forty-four of the American states. Her success as a pedagogue is substantiated through her numerous students, many of whom occupy significant musical positions in universities and orchestras, and as leaders in the string education field. Phyllis Young is a dedicated, passionate teacher whose legacy rests not only on her professional accomplishments, but also on her influence on those who have been associated with her. The success of her students, her influence on other string teachers and programs, and her two books, all lasting testaments to her commitment to excellence, can be considered the most significant components of her legacy.

Abstract:
This work is focused on the problem of IS/ICT project cost estimation. Main aim of this work is to design a methodology, which can be use for project cost estimation in the initial part of the project stadium. Defining a basic terms of the project management and describing the most widely use cost estimation metods are the first step to archive main aim. This will be achived by studing literature and relevant articles of the project management. Next step is find an appropriate factors which help to set up the methodology. This factors can derive from a stakeholder's analysis. After definition these factors there si possible to set up a particular methodology. Universality (for a wide group of the projects), accuracy (to determine a particular method) and usability (in the initial part of the project stadium) are the most important criteria to review this methodology. Finally, it is necessary to evaluate the proposed methodology. This can be achieved by comparing the methods recommended in the methodology and the methods actually used for the real project cost estimation. The expected benefits of this work are the most widely use cost estimation metods arrangement and creation of the recommended metodology which can be used to cost estimation of future projects.

Abstract:
The thesis is focused on project management of IS/ICT projects, more specifically on the area concerning relationships among parties involved in IS/ICT project. The thesis presents two main contributions to the area of IS/ICT project management. Firstly, the thesis provides systematic order of available information in the area of relationships, and hence enables easy orientation in the area. This contribution is achieved via analysis of information contained in project management methodologies, IT Governance/IT Management standards, ISO standards, legislation and continual process improvement concept. Such analysis is followed by synthesis resulting in conceptual model of relationships among parties involved in IS/ICT projects. Secondly, the thesis provides recommendations that prevent potential problems to arise in the area of relationships among parties involved in IS/ICT projects. This contribution is achieved via application of conceptual model in the environment of real IS/ICT project, and consequent derivation of knowledge originating from problems of this project.

The first will highlight that resemble the manifestations of the gift in the Distant Support Project (PAD). The second aim is discuss the gift between strangers on the concept of Jacques Godbout and its manifestation in Distance Support Project (PAD). And the third is demonstrate the importance of gift for the structuring, maintenance and stainability of PAD. The dissertation will show how the project helps to generate links which is the main proposal of the gift, possibility also contributing to improve and maintain the project itself. Even being based in an unique initiative, many third sector organizations work with similar proposals expanding the findings of the work to these as well. Based on a case-study of the project in the municipality Salvador (Bahia) it is addressed to the sponsor showing that the gift is not only forwarded to the sponsor. It is a two way relationship. The Brazilian position of a no further supported country from international cooperation projects but as a donor country or player push managements to create strategies in order to mobilize Brazilian families to continue the project that should consider the gift. The work shows invisible relationships (gifted ones) that deserve to be observed.

Abstract:
A roller coaster manufacturer became aware that improperly heat treated track couplings were sent to a construction site for assembly. Concerns were that suspect couplings might not meet the engineering specifications and could be vulnerable to sudden failure. A testing company in Oak Ridge, TN that specializes in in-situ and laboratory mechanical testing was contacted by the manufacturer for help in this endeavor. The construction company elected to enlist a local testing firm to perform field tests on the components instead of the company in Oak Ridge. The test methods used are incapable of providing quantitative results that could be measured to the engineering specifications, making it unlikely to identify anything but the worst material conditions. This study is an example that the need for accurate analysis is very important. The manufacturer reported that 60 couplings were replaced, but it is presently unknown how many should have been replaced.

Abstract:
This work deals with the questions of the analysis and management of the parts engaged in information and communication technology projects. The stakeholder (the term "stakeholder" is used in Czech as well) is a subject, i.e. an individual or a corporate body, that is concerned about the result of the project and has the possibility to influence the project. The main goal of the thesis is to map the contemporary approaches toward the stakeholders analysis and management in the ICT projects, to analyze the problems of the influence of individual parts from both technocracy and human (psychological) point of view and to subsequently suggest the methodology for an effective analysis and management of the engaged parts, which could be used at the management of the projects in the ICT field. It is convenient to introduce the used terms and notions , their history and the way of use in the first part. There are dissect the known methodologies and tools used for the analysis and the management of the engaged parts. Subsequently, the stakeholders are systematically divide, it is accomplished their analysis from different perspectives and discussed mainly the aspects which can be crucial in the project management. The most common interests and motivations of the particular engaged parts are presented, including the influence and interest groups and the ways how to procure these parts for the aims of the projects. In the second part a research is described, which is carried out among managers of ICT companies and participants of ICT projects. There are elaborated some hypotheses on grounds of practical experiences from ICT projects and these are verified by this examination. The third part is focused on the presentation of the methodology for the analysis and the management of stakeholders in the ICT projects, which should serve the project managers for the stakeholders analysis and management in the ICT projects. Practical use of this methodology in the project of the SAP system implementation is described in the last, fourth part. This thesis completes relevant sources with the practical experiences at work on the projects in the ICT field. The effected research attested the original notion that this issue is relatively little known in the Czech Republic. The outcomes of this work could be of use for the project management in the ICT field.

Vasiliu, I. V. "Viable project or wishful thinking? The European Union (EU) policy in the fight against terrorism : quest for strong human rights safeguards and enhanced security." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2011. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:14740ab1-afff-43fb-ba8b-6a0eea7d228f.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines whether and how the EU counter-terrorism (CT) policy reconciles the demands of security with adequate protection of human rights. It starts from the assumption that human rights and security are mutually reinforcing and interdependent objectives in the CT fight where the erosion of one objective leads automatically to negative consequences in respect of the other objective. It specifically argues that the reconciliation of these two objectives has to be addressed at two distinct levels: first, in the framework of the EU primary law and, second, in the content of each EU CT provision. Consequently, the thesis examines both levels in order to respond to the research question. In the course of this investigation, the research has demonstrated that the legal framework resulting from the Treaty of Lisbon provides a basis for better addressing the human rights protection and security objectives of the EU CT policy. However, the analysis of three specific instruments – two in force and one at the level of a legislative proposal – provided contrasting results regarding the simultaneous fulfilment of the two imperatives outlined above. Moving beyond questions pertaining to the advancement of preventive criminal law and the possible reinforcement of a surveillance society, the thesis advances the hypothesis that, in the field, we are confronted more and more with what we could term ‘grey laws’ – following Dyzenhaus, Lynch and Reilly – due to their frailties as regards the tests of proportionality and legal certainty. Moreover, the thesis explores the EU’s stance as an actor in the field and the applicability of Wallace’s ‘pendulum model’ for CT decision-making, as well as the position of an individual subject to all the three measures indicated above. Solutions in order to overcome the identified shortcomings as well as further potential areas of research are also explored.

Full text
Abstract:
The Olympic idea as it was developed by Pierre de Coubertin happens to be a project whose aim was to rebuild a democratic political history of physical education from 1892 to 1920. Anchored in the era of industrial revolutions and of the birth of the nation-State, this heuristic work aims at describing a process of actions in the creation of an exemplary citizen. Such a mission was accomplished thanks to the important charisma of a man, Pierre de Coubertin, who was also the father of the idea and an ideologist thanks to his network of acquaintances. The cultural and sporting practices that were created were spread through diverse concepts (sush as sociability, networks, power relations and democracy) both with the Games and the IOC. This study mixes different sources so as to reveal the process that was linked to Pierre de Coubertin's work in three complementary indicators. First, the success of this specific idea is due to the originator's personality and very life, whose network of acquaintances was decisive. Then Pierre de Coubertin federated international actors by relying on a group of men - those who were co-opted in the IOC - so as to create a group identity within the comittee. Indeed, the Committee possesses politicaln educational, sporting and social specificities that helped to spread the message within international geographic spaces. To finish, Pierre de Coubertin endeavored to promote his model by taking advantage from the modernity and the strength of the democratic spaces that were then launching into a "race to progress and to recognition". Our work uses these three logics to understand the birth of the olympic idea worldwide from 1892 to 1896, its development between 1897 and 1914 and eventually its en 1920 to make room for sports show

For the first time microbial tDNA could be isolated from 50 g unperturbed Mont Terri Opalinus Clay. Based on the analysis of the tDNA the bacterial diversity of the unperturbed clay is dominated by representatives of Firmicutes, Betaproteobacteria, and Bacteriodetes. Firmicutes also dominate after treatment of the clay with R2A medium. Bacteria isolated from Mont Terri Opalinus Clay on R2A medium were related to Sporomusa spp., Paenibacillus spp., and Clostridium spp.. All further investigations are concentrated on the unique isolates Sporomusa sp. MT-2 and Paenibacillus sp. MT-2. Cells of the type Sporomusa sp. MT-2 and Paenibacillus sp. MT-2 were comprehensively analyzed in terms of growing, morphology, functional groups of the cell envelope, and cell membrane structure. Strong actinide(An)/lanthanide(Ln)-interactions with the Opalinus Clay isolates and the Äspö-strain Pseudomonas fluorescens (CCUG 32456) could be determined within a broad pH range (2-8). The metals bind as a function of pH on protonated phosphoryl, carboxyl and deprotonated phosphoryl sites of the respective cell membrane. The thermodynamic surface complexation constants of bacterial An/Ln-species were determined and can be used in modeling programs. Depending on the used An different interaction mechanisms were found (U(VI): biosorption, partly biomineralisation; Cm(III): biosorption, indications for embedded Cm(III); Pu: biosorption, bioreduction and indications for embedded Pu). Different strategies of coping with U(VI) were observed comparing P. fluorescens planktonic cells and biofilms under the chosen experimental conditions. An enhanced capability of the biofilm to form meta-autunite in comparison to the planktonic cells was proven. Conclusively, the P. fluorescens biofilm is more efficient in U(VI) detoxification. In conclusion, Mont Terri Opalinus Clay contains bacterial communities, that may influence the speciation and hence the migration behavior of selected An/Ln under environmental conditions.

Abstract:
Cycling has grown as a leisure activity, means of transport and mainly as a professional sport. Therefore, deeper studies and research aiming at maximizing the performance of high-level athletes have been made necessary. Additionally to such studies, the area of instrumentation schemes has developed seeking to make possible the measuring and characterization of several parameters for researchers interested in cycling. Regarding the vibrant surging of systems that allow the measuring of magnitudes such as the forces and mechanical power generated by the cyclist, the present research aims at implementing and characterizing the measuring deriving from pedals and crankset for a road bicycle so as to analyze the results with appropriate statistic methods. Considering the mechanical limitations inherent to the bicycle the movement of pedals and crankset independent electrical systems charged by batteries were created, as well as the synchronization for the beginning of data acquisitions through ZigBee modules. Ten volunteers participated on the practices. They generated twenty sprints of data each. Such data served to statistically evaluate and conclude, based on variance analysis, that the power applied by the cyclists are significantly different for one of the load cell.

Given the staggering prevalence of 12-22% of school children with mental health problems and the paucity of effective mental health services available, it is essential that professionals examine alternative methods for providing social and emotional support to children (Greenberg, Bumbarger, & Domitrovich, 2001). Rather than continuing with a service delivery approach that is reactive, fragmented, and inefficient, professionals are called to consider a more preventive approach that ensures the health of all children. A public health model of intervention can provide a conceptual framework for mental health service delivery in its aim to serve an entire population and to provide multi-tiered support (universal, targeted, indicated) that increases in intensity based on the needs of individual persons (Coie et al, 2000). Members of the Oregon Resiliency Project, a research effort at the University of Oregon, have spent the last several years developing one such set of SEL curricula, appropriate for children in grades pre-k-12, the Strong Kids programs, Strong Start: K-2 , (Merrell, Parisi, & Whitcomb, 2007), is a component of Strong Kids , developmentally applicable to kindergarten through second grade students. The purpose of this study was to implement a pilot or feasibility study that examined the impact of Strong Start on first grade students' social-emotional knowledge skills, with a particular emphasis on emotion knowledge, social behavior and affect. Pretest data collection of Strong Start began in Fall 2007 in 4 classrooms in a suburban, northwestern school district. Implementation of the intervention occurred in Winter 2008 and posttest data were gathered in Spring 2008. Results indicated that Strong Start was implemented with integrity, and that significant increases in students' knowledge about emotion situations and significant decreases in students' internalizing behaviors were associated with exposure to the program. Limitations of this study as well as directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
The narrative identity: Alexander Nehamas, Richard Rorty This work analyzes the problem of narrative identity developed in the works of Nehamas and Rorty. These two American philosophers work in the same – postnietzschean – paradigm. Both of them claim that the identity is not simply given to a person; rather, it is something one has to achieve if he/she wants to have one. A means both philosophers offer to such an achievement is to narrate a story about one’s person, one’s style of life and thus to create ones identity. Nehamas and Rorty assert that while creating identity one has to obey to some rules. However, the rules the philosophers announce are somewhat different. As to Nehamas, he claims that the project of the self-creation ought to be coherent and distinctive. These two criteria are to be achieved, otherwise the self-creation will fail. In addition, this project has to be accomplished in writing. Nehamas demonstrates how these criteria distinctiveness and coherence – are achieved in the writings of certain philosophers. These philosophers are Socrates, Plato, Montaigne, Nietzsche, Foucault and ultimately Nehamas himself. Nehamas suggests that all these philosophers belong to the tradition of the art of living and that all of them are primarily concerned with the projects of self-creation and self-perfection. As to Rorty, he asserts that the creator of oneself has to fulfil one major requirement. Like Nehamas, Rorty claims that the aim of self-creator, whom he... [to full text]

Hamilton, Catherine Faye. "Habitat and Seasonal Distribution of the North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis) and Vertebrate Species Assemblages in Two Protected Areas of the Florida Everglades." NSUWorks, 2014. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/occ_stuetd/23.

Full text
Abstract:
The Florida Everglades ecosystem is threatened by human development, increased pollution, freshwater scarcity, and invasive species; factors that have negatively impacted the Everglades and native species health and populations. Man-made canals and levies have redirected the natural flow of fresh water from Lake Okeechobee into the Florida Everglades, starving central and south Florida ecosystems of necessary fresh water and nutrients. Through the efforts of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project (CERP), freshwater is being redirected back into central and south Florida, returning the sheet flow of water back into the Everglades. Monitoring species abundance in the Everglades is a beneficial conservational tool for assessing restoration efforts from CERP. As a semi-aquatic apex predator, river otters (Lontra canadensis) are a useful health bio-indicator for the Florida Everglades. In order to conduct future population studies of river otters in the Florida Everglades, it must first be ascertained where they can be found and what time of year they are most likely to be sighted. For this study, Moultrie infrared game cameras were used to photograph the presence or absence of river otters within the five main habitats in the Everglades; the pinelands, hardwood hammock, cypress swamp, marsh prairie, and mangrove estuary at two protected areas in the Florida Everglades (Big Cypress National Preserve and Fakahatchee Strand State Park). River otters were most frequently sighted in the hardwood hammock habitat, but were also found in the cypress swamp. The large majority of river otter sightings occurred during dry season, which is thought to be a function of restricted water availability and aquatic mobility. Future population studies of river otters would be most productive in the hardwood hammock and cypress swamp habitats during dry season. Game camera images along with field opportunistic sightings, resulted in a variety of species documented. This provided valuable information of species richness and distribution within and amongst the habitats. The hardwood hammock was found to be the most species rich habitat, having over half the species observed in the study in this habitat. The Aves class was the most abundantly observed in the Everglades, and was most frequently sighted during the dry season. As a refuge for migratory birds, the Everglades house the majority of bird species during the winter months, which occur during dry season. The Aves class was most frequently sighted in the pinelands habitat during dry season. This habitat, being the highest in elevation and therefore the driest, shows a stronger resemblance to most northern bird habitats then does the water-saturated wetlands found throughout the Everglades. The mangrove estuary was the most commonly occurring outlier, having the least species overlap when compared to the other habitats. All other habitats in the Everglades are freshwater wetlands, while the mangrove estuary is a brackish environment, which limits the species that are unable to tolerate saline conditions. Further studies of species abundance throughout the Everglades will aid in monitoring CERP restoration efforts over time.

Abstract:
The search starts with the reconstruction of socio-economic processes. Moving from these reflections, it's possible to see that today's companies take advantage of increasingly self-employed coordinated and continuous and, after d.lgs. 276/2003 “lavoratori a progetto”. These employees are, therefore, subject to a power (contractual) coordination of the customer that, at times, it adds up to a state of economic dependence by the same. It then creates an internal differentiation into autonomy area that does not seem properly valued by the ordinary legislator, but that seems to involve trade unions. Given that in reality there are different representations, we move to circumscribe the scope of applicability of the Arts. 39 and 40 Const. The absence of a genuine interest and genuine self activities suggest that employees "strong" and its associations can only benefit from the protections posed by Arts. 2, 18 and 41 Const. At the end tackling the problems so that the reconstruction turn raises, namely how to ensure the effectiveness of the safeguards recognized unionism collaborators "weak" and reconcile the associations of employees "strong" with the antitrust law.

Abstract:
abstract: This study examined directors’, master teachers’, graduate and undergraduate String Project teachers’ perspectives of the skills and behaviors important for teaching strings. Participants were from the 40 String Projects listed on the National String Project Consortium website, including String Project directors (n = 16), master teachers (n = 7), graduate (n = 6) and undergraduate string teachers (n = 46) involved in String Projects across the United States. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 72 years old. The survey for this study was based on Teachout’s 1997 survey pertaining to teachers’ skills and behaviors in three categories: teaching, personal, musical. A cover letter containing a link to the electronic survey was sent to directors and master teachers for the 40 String Projects, requesting their participation and the participation of their string teachers. Seventy-five participants from 19 String Projects completed the survey. Means and standard deviations were calculated for each item for each of the four participant groups. Overall means for each category of skills and behaviors were calculated followed by a one-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) to determine which of the three categories the teachers and directors believed most important. Three one-way MANOVAs were used to analyze participants’ perspectives for three broad categories of skills and behaviors (personal, teaching, and musical) across the four participant groups. No significant differences were found across all three MANOVA analyses. Additionally, descriptive statistics were used to determine the rankings of importance for the four participant groups on 40 survey items. Results showed that participants in all four groups believed that personal skills and behaviors were more important than teaching and musical skills and behaviors. Also conducted were Pearson Product-Moment Correlations, which analyses revealed a strong positive relationship between the ranked perceptions of musical and teaching skills and behaviors (r = .78, p = .00), between musical and personal skills and behaviors (r = .65, p = .00), and between personal and teaching skills and behaviors (r = .84, p = .00). Strong positive correlations were found between the three categories. Recommendations for research and practice were given.

Full text
Abstract:
As subcontractors, electrical contractors have been facing unfavorable environments, with problems such as constrained job site areas, schedule interference, and inefficient communication with other trades. To achieve desired goals more efficiently, electrical contractors require a more systematic and effective project management strategy. The primary goal of this research is to develop continuous task strings that pair pre-construction planning (PCP) with relevant project execution (PE) tasks in order for electrical contractors to achieve significantly better performance. Incorporating several statistical analyses, the research demonstrates the effects of continuous task strings on project performance in terms of cost and schedule success. The results reveal that the levels of task string usage are significantly correlated to project success. Moreover, task strings have significant leveraged effects on project performance: project performance can be improved by stringing together related PCP and PE tasks as opposed to performing either PCP or PE task individually. The research further suggests the specific high-value task strings that significantly increase the likelihood of achieving successful project outcomes. Ultimately, by elucidating the relationship between pre-construction planning and project execution tasks, the research can help electrical contractors accomplish significantly better performance through effective project management strategies.

Engels, Jeffrey Edward. "Aid project exit strategies: building strong sustainable institutions." 2010. http://repository.unimelb.edu.au/10187/8502.

Full text
Abstract:
Foreign aid project exit strategies that contribute to sustainable development have been rarely considered throughout the history of development studies and practice. The philosophical underpinnings of early development were based on economic theories. Over the years initiatives have manifested themselves by investments through international aid projects. As aid projects are donor-driven, most exit strategy planning involves closing down a project without turning it over to another organization to continue implementation. This means that aid benefits end with whatever impact the project has made, leaving ill-equipped local ministries or under-resourced NGOs to meet local development needs and fill the gap of terminated services. The project cycle—a popular development tool used by multinational and bilateral organizations alike—provides a framework to induce development, but makes no accommodation for an exit strategy that perpetuates development. This is a missed opportunity that reveals a flaw in the project cycle. This flaw can be corrected by revising the project cycle implementation stage to include building the capacity of people to perform the functions the project was designed for, as well as a local implementing entity through which they can work. Once accomplished, a sponsor can transfer project activities and resources to the local implementing entity though a phase-over process to extend development post-project for ongoing impact.
The aim of this thesis is to promote a greater understanding of exit strategies and analyze an aspect of project management essential to all foreign aid projects since every project must eventually end its interventions upon completion of its goals or within prescribed financial and time constraints. What are the conditions necessary to complete a foreign aid project phase-over to a local institution successfully? How can in-country local project staff contribute to institution-building before, during, and after a phase-over? What are the appropriate ways to measure the success of a phase-over?
This thesis examines the concept of exit strategy within the context of a case study of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Marketing Assistance Project (USDA-MAP) in Armenia (1995-2005) and the innovative phase-over approach it used to establish the Center for Agribusiness & Rural Development (CARD). To do this, the writings of Levinger & McLeod (2002), Gardner et al. (2005), and Esman (1972) are drawn upon to analyze this case. The actions taken by the USDA illustrate how an emphasis on internal local project staff, over external technical interventions, furthers development. The USDA’s exit strategy incorporated collective participation, empowered local stakeholders, promoted development ownership through localization, and built individual and institutional capacity. The resulting organization that was created is evidence of a successful phase-over and an innovative institution. This phase-over model offers a paradigm that embraces and promotes social/human assets within aid projects for sustainable development, and in so doing has ramifications for policy makers, project designers, and development practitioners to rethink conventional development practices.

Abstract:
This project aims at giving the intervenient students, a diverse and significant musical experience associated to the Pop – Rock music style, usingstring instruments and Madeira´s traditional music, allowing at the same time the acquaintance and making a profound study of its cultural identity (Artistic – musical Patrimony). By these means, a blending project was developed, interpreting traditional Madeira music with musical arrangements close to pop-rock style in a diverse instrumental group using pop-rock instruments and traditional string instruments, this within a 3rd cycle school class together with a 9th form class (PCA: Plano curricular alternative – (Alternative curriculum plan) at Dr. Alfredo Ferreira Nóbrega Júnior school, in the locality of Camacha which belongs to the municipality of Santa Cruz. This experience took place during the period between October and December 2014, totalling 12 sessions. To sustain theory to this project, various theory concepts were summoned, namely the music and string instruments of Madeira, the fusion project mentioned above, which were vital to the understanding of the project itself, as well as the musical learning concepts, social knowledge and motivation which were essential for the understanding of the data given. The process of qualitative investigation which took place in parallel, intended to prove that knowledge and perception is possible among youngsters in an articulated project between traditional music and pop-rock style. The results which were obtained by this project, allowed to conclude that youngsters develop significant musical and social knowledge in this fusion project between traditional music and the approximation to the pop-rock music style (structural and expressive techniques) as well as altering the perception of the students in this matter.

Georgiou, Konstantinos. "Integrality Gaps for Strong Linear Programming and Semidefinite Programming Relaxations." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/26271.

Full text
Abstract:
The inapproximability for NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems lies in the heart of theoretical computer science. A negative result can be either conditional, where the starting point is a complexity assumption, or unconditional, where the inapproximability holds for a restricted model of computation. Algorithms based on Linear Programming (LP) and Semidefinite Programming (SDP) relaxations are among the most prominent models of computation. The related and common measure of efficiency is the integrality gap, which sets the limitations of the associated algorithmic schemes. A number of systematic procedures, known as lift-and-project systems, have been proposed to improve the integrality gap of standard relaxations. These systems build strong hierarchies of either LP relaxations, such as the Lovasz-Schrijver (LS) and the Sherali-Adams (SA) systems, or SDP relaxations, such as the Lovasz-Schrijver SDP (LS+), the Sherali-Adams SDP (SA+) and the Lasserre (La) systems. In this thesis we prove integrality gap lower bounds for the aforementioned lift-and-project systems and for a number of combinatorial optimization problems, whose inapproximability is yet unresolved. Given that lift-and-project systems produce relaxations that have given the best algorithms known for a series of combinatorial problems, the lower bounds can be read as strong evidence of the inapproximability of the corresponding optimization problems. From the results found in the thesis we highlight the following: For every epsilon>0, the level-Omega(sqrt(log n/ log log n)) LS+ relaxation of the Vertex Cover polytope has integrality gap 2-epsilon. The integrality gap of the standard SDP for Vertex Cover remains 2-o(1) even if all hypermetric inequalities are added to the relaxation. The resulting relaxations are incomparable to the SDP relaxations derived by the LS+ system. Finally, the addition of all ell1 inequalities eliminates all solutions not in the integral hull. For every epsilon>0, the level-Omega(sqrt(log n/ log log n)) SA relaxation of Vertex Cover has integrality gap 2-epsilon. The integrality gap remains tight even for superconstant-level SA+ relaxations. We prove a tight lower bound for the number of tightenings that the SA system needs in order to prove the Pigeonhole Principle. We also prove sublinear and linear rank bounds for the La and SA systems respectively for the Tseitin tautology. Linear levels of the SA+ system treat highly unsatisfiable instances of fixed predicate-P constraint satisfaction problems over q-ary alphabets as fully satisfiable, when the satisfying assignments of the predicates P can be equipped with a balanced and pairwise independent distribution. We study the performance of the Lasserre system on the cut polytope. When the input is the complete graph on 2d+1 vertices, we show that the integrality gap is at least 1+1/(4d(d+1)) for the level-d SDP relaxation.

Veloso, Carina. "O uso das estratégias de cálculo mental por alunos do 3º ano de escolaridade." Master's thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.26/11354.

Full text
Abstract:
Mental calculation, essential throughout life, should be developed from the early years of schooling, through contact with diverse experiences. Math is for everyone and, as the NCTM argues, those who understand and are able to do mathematics will have significantly greater opportunities and options to build their future (NCTM, 2007, p. 5). For this to be possible, mental calculation must be properly developed and nurtured from an early age, allowing an efficiency of use increase over time. The implementation of mental calculation routines allows students to develop flexible calculation strategies between the numbers, using the properties of the numerical operations. The present study is based on the use and development of strategies used by students during the exploration of mental calculation strips and numeric strings. To achieve it, two questions were placed: What are the mental calculation strategies that students use? How does the choices of mental calculation strategies develop? This study was conducted in a class with 20 students between the ages of 7 and 8 years old and followed a qualitative methodology of action research. The results indicate that at the end of the study the students were more comfortable with some strategies that seem to have facilitated the development of reasoning and mathematical communication. In different operations presented in the study, the students showed their preference for some specific strategies. With regard to the operations of adding, students used more strategies of decomposition; in the subtraction, students preferred the strategy of jumps and, in multiplication, the students were divided between additive and multiplicative procedures. In all operations there were always a large number of students that only presented the result, not showing the kind of strategy used. With the operation of numeric strings, students used some strategies that had not been applied in the resolution of the strips, showing some evolution in the development of their reasoning, as well as in the communication.

This study is meant to examine what are the mental calculation strategies used by students of the 2nd grade in solving numeric strings and addition problems. To this end, I sought to answer two questions: a) What mental calculation strategies students use to solve numeric strings? b) What mental calculation strategies students use in solving numerical problems? This study presents a qualitative approach, taking a close approach to research-action. Data collection was carried out through observation and document analysis. This study participants 27 students in a class of 2nd year of internship context III, under the Master in Preschool Education and Teaching of the 1st cycle of basic education. Students had resolved fourteen numeric strings and nine numerical problems, although the study analysis has only been performed on two proposals for each task. The analysis of data collected have revealed that students use different calculation strategies, involving the use of numerical facts, and strategies 1010 and N10C. This study could not identify a preference for any of these strategies.
