Abstract:

Abstract:
Drill strings are used in oil and gas production as well as geothermal wells. They experience destructive vibrations, many of which are highly dependent on drill string modes. In this paper, we show that the lowest frequency modes are not necessarily the most critical and we delineate a methodology for reducing the number of modes representing the drill string. The frequency response function and stability diagram are used as measures of dynamic similarity between the proposed model and the drill string. We also introduce a novel approach to represent a drill string in laboratory test rigs. This approach not only represents the drill string dynamics but also offers flexibility to modify, remove, or augment the modes representing the system. The underlying principle is that in a multi-degree-of-freedom in-series spring-mass system with Rayleigh damping, dynamic modes can be decoupled. Applying the force to the end node (bit), the modes can then be configured separately in a parallel arrangement where their contributions to bit displacement are added algebraically. A practical arrangement for this purpose is proposed in this paper. Construction of a test rig that accurately represents the drill string dynamics is critical to validation of any test data on bits, bottom hole assemblies, instrument subs, and so on.

Abstract:
The formerly monotypic taxon, Hyalopale bispinosa Perkins 1985 (Chrysopetalinae), is comprised of a cryptic species complex from predominantly tropical embayments and island reefs of the Western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Oceans. Hyalopale species are of meiofaunal size (length: 1−2.8mm), but considered non-interstitial, with the majority of species inhabiting a singular habitat of shallow littoral zones among algae and epifauna overlying sediments in rubble. Hyalopale adults exhibit notochaetal fans characterized by the presence of lateral and midline notochaetal spines. Species of Hyalopale can be distinguished by the shape of glass-like notochaetal paleae and the number of densely stacked ribs. Hyalopale bispinosa forms a western and eastern Atlantic species complex, comprising the type species, Hyalopale bispinosa s.s., a comparatively larger form with the highest number of notochaetal paleael ribs from Florida, and Hyalopale cf. bispinosa, from the western and eastern Mediterranean, a smaller form with a similar notochaetal morphology to the latter. Unfortunately, no molecular sequence data is available for Hyalopale bispinosa s.s. Five new species are described, with molecular sequence data provided for three: Hyalopale leslieae sp. nov., a small form with a comparatively low number of paleal ribs, found from the Florida Keys to Belize, Caribbean Sea, H. zerofskii sp. nov. from southern California and Mexico, eastern Pacific and H. sapphiriglancyorum sp. nov., a distinctive species with the lowest number of paleael ribs, from Raja Ampat, Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, western Pacific. Two other species are described from morphology alone: H. angeliensis sp. nov. from Dampier, Western Australia and Seychelle Islands, eastern Indian Ocean and H. furfuricula sp. nov. from the Red Sea and Mozambique, western Indian Ocean, possessing a unique paleal brow shape. While well supported as a clade, support for relationships within Hyalopale is low. Hyalopale cf. bispinosa (Mediterranean) was recovered as sister group to the remaining Hyalopale, with H. leslieae sp. nov. as sister to the Hyalopale Pacific clade, comprising H. zerofskii sp. nov. (eastern Pacific) and H. sapphiriglancyorum sp. nov. (western Pacific). Within Chrysopetalinae, Hyalopale and Paleanotus formed a clade that was the sister group to the other paleate chrysopetalids under maximum likelihood, though Paleanotus grouped with the other paleate forms under maximum parsimony. The adult morphology of Hyalopale species is compared with that exhibited in the larvae of Paleanotus species; based on these results, including possession of a shared notochaetal character, Hyalopale is considered to contain paedomorphic taxa.

Abstract:
Numerous studies have revealed the benefits of using geogrids in a flexible pavement, especially for reducing permanent deformation. One of the questions that remain about the effectiveness of a geogrid in reinforcing of pavement is the extent to which the geogrid is engaged and mobilized throughout its service. This paper presents results of a laboratory study on various geogrid products embedded in flexible-pavement sections. The laboratory-scale pavement sections were subjected to cyclic moving wheel loads by using reduced-scale accelerated pavement testing (APT). During the APT, strains that developed in the geogrids were measured at intervals of loading applications by strain gauges installed in pairs on the upper and lower surfaces of the geogrid ribs. Permanent deformation of the subgrade was also measured at the same intervals of loading applications. The measurements of geogrid strains throughout the construction process indicated that the construction resulted in a considerable prestressing effect on the geogrids. Measurements from the individual strain gauges in pairs showed that the gauges installed on the upper surfaces of the ribs were in compression while those on the lower surfaces were in tension; the situation suggested a significant effect on the flexural deflection of the ribs on the tensile strain measurements from the strain gauges. Furthermore, it was observed that geogrid ribs in the longitudinal direction of traffic loading were not mobilized, while considerable strains were developed in geogrid ribs in the direction transverse to traffic loading. A clear correlation was found between the reinforcing forces developed in the geogrids and the performance of the reinforced subgrade in relation to resisting permanent deformation.

Abstract:
To verify the prevailing Brevipalpus species in citrus orchards affected by leprosis in Argentina, specimens of this genus were collected mainly from ‘Valencia’ and ‘Hamlin’ varieties of sweet orange plants from experimental and commercial plantations at Bella Vista, Corrientes Province, Concordia, Entre Rios Province and Saens Peña, Chaco Province. Examinations under light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were carried out to identify the species based on external morphological characteristics. A mixture of typical Brevipalpus obovatus Donnadieu and Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) was found, with prevalence of the former (43.7 versus 27.2%) in the 327 adult females examined. However, 29% of the total number of females examined were atypical, having one solenidion (ù”) on one of tarsi II and two (ù’ and ù”) on the other, either left or right. To investigate whether this variation was also common elsewhere, several Brevipalpus populations of the obovatus species-group from Chile (Brevipalpus chilensis Baker), Brazil (B. obovatus and B. phoenicis), Costa Rica and Paraguay (B. phoenicis in both countries) were examined. Asymmetric numbers of tarsus II solenidia were found in 11 of the 1,993 examined adult female specimens of these populations. The results suggested a relation between the high proportion of asymmetric mites in Argentina and the occurrence of a mixed population of both B. obovatus and B. phoenicis; however, present knowledge about the apparently parthenogenetic system of reproduction of these species does not support the hypothesis that asymmetric mites could be the hybrids of those species. Thus, the factor leading to high proportions of asymmetric Brevipalpus in Argentina remains unknown.

Full text
Abstract:
A quantitative method to screen common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plants for resistance to Bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV) is described. Four parameters were assessed in developing the quantitative method: symptoms associated with systemic virus movement, plant vigor, virus titer, and plant dry weight. Based on these parameters, two rating systems (V and VV rating) were established. Plants from 21 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a Sierra (susceptible) × Olathe (partially resistant) cross inoculated with the BCMNV-NL-3 K strain were used to evaluate this quantitative approach. In all, 11 RILs exhibited very susceptible reactions and 10 RILs expressed partially resistant reactions, thus fitting a 1:1 susceptible/partially resistant ratio (χ2 = 0.048, P = 0.827) and suggesting that the response is mediated by a single gene. Using the classical qualitative approach based only on symptom expression, the RILs were difficult to separate into phenotypic groups because of a continuum of responses. By plotting mean percent reduction in either V (based on visual symptoms) or VV (based on visual symptoms and vigor) rating versus enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) absorbance values, RILs could be separated clearly into different phenotypic groups. The utility of this quantitative approach also was evaluated on plants from 12 cultivars or pure lines inoculated with one of three strains of BCMNV. Using the mean VV rating and ELISA absorbance values, significant differences were established not only in cultivar and pure line comparisons but also in virus strain comparisons. This quantitative system should be particularly useful for the evaluation of the independent action of bc genes, the discovery of new genes associated with partial resistance, and assessing virulence of virus strains.

Hansenia pinnatiinvolucellata and H. weberbaueriana have been recorded to co-occur in Hengduan Mountains and adjacent regions. However, there were no reliable distinguishing characters to identify them. In our research, we explored key morphological characters through field work, specimen examinations and original literature reviews and reconstructed the phylogeny based on nuclear ITS regions, to determine the relationship between H. pinnatiinvolucellata and H. weberbaueriana. Morphological results indicated that the key, unique morphological characters (entire or pinnati bracteoles longer than pedicels and fruit with 3 ribs) of H. pinnatiinvolucellata were occurs simultaneously in some populations of H. weberbaueriana. Phylogenetic analyses also reveal that H. pinnatiinvolucellata and H. weberbaueriana are nested together. So, H. pinnatiinvolucellata should be a synonym of H. weberbaueriana.

Abstract:
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. There are four common HPV strains: 6, 11, 16, and 18. Strains 6 and 11 cause genital warts, while strains 16 and 18 are asymptomatic in males and may progress to cervical cancer in females. Although uncommon, a small percentage of males and females have been diagnosed with HPV without previous sexual contact. In this case report, we discuss a case conducted on a 15-year-old South Asian male who contracted an unknown low-risk strain of HPV with no history of sexual contact. HPV is highly infectious, however in the majority of cases the immune system is able to clear the infection, preventing the appearance of genital warts. In cases such as these, it is important to help control the spread of viral infections. Several determinants of health are involved in and affect the transmission of HPV, including income and social status, social support networks, education and literacy, culture, social and physical environments, and health services. To aid in the prevention of HPV, sexual education should be taught at early ages within schools and the Gardasil® vaccine should be administered to both females and males at an early age to reduce the burden of disease and the incidence of HPV.

Abstract:
The flow behavior in rib-roughened ducts is influenced by the inclination of ribs and the effect is investigated in the present study by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The local flow structures between two adjacent ribs were measured. The Reynolds number was fixed at 5800. The flow field description was based on the PIV results in planes both parallel and perpendicular to the ribbed walls at various locations. The rib angle to the main flow direction was varied as 30 deg, 45 deg, 60 deg and 90 deg. The ribs induce three dimensional flow fields. The flow separation and reattachment between adjacent ribs are clearly observed. In addition, the inclined ribs are found to alter the spanwise distribution of the streamwise velocity component. The streamwise velocity component has its highest values at the upstream end of the ribs, and decreases continuously to its lowest values at the downstream end. Strong secondary flow motion occurs over the entire duct cross section for the inclined ribs. The flow structures between two consecutive ribs show that the fluid flows along the ribs from one end of the ribs to the other end, and then turns back at the transverse center. Downwash and upwash flows are observed at the upstream end and downstream end of the ribs, respectively.

Abstract:
Modal analysis of the whole guitar construction was performed. The results of eigenfrequencies were obtained. Stress in strings affects not only static loading of material, but also shift of eigenfrequencies. From obtained natural frequencies for solved spectrum such frequencies were used which coincides with assumed ribs new positions of ribs were suggested. Other ribs which do not carry out the mechanical function were removed. Also static reaction was evaluated and new position of ribs was adjusted. For final model new eigenfrequencies were computed and compared with previous ones. Significant changes were revealed in low frequencies (bellow 400 Hz) where fewer amounts of natural shapes were obtained. Approximately 50% were lost by adding of ribs. For chosen frequencies of equal temperament the harmonic analysis was performed. The analysis proved ability of oscillation for frequencies far of natural frequencies. The final model satisfies the requirement of minimization of static stress in material due to strings and allows very effective oscillation of top the guitar resonance board. In comparison with literature good agreement in amplitude size of front board and amount of modes in appropriate frequencies were achieved. Suggested model even offers higher amount of natural shapes in comparison with literature, namely in high frequencies. From additional comparison of eigenfrequencies and natural shapes the influence of ribs position on natural shapes was approved.

Abstract:
This paper deals with investigatson of the process of drill bit whirling on the rough plane of the well bottom. Nonholonomic kinematic models of the mechanical interaction of contacting bodies with defects at the initial stage of system self-excitation are applied. On the basis of the results of experimental studies, it is believed that one of the main factors influencing on the whirlings vibrations is the geometry of the bit. The bit is considered to be an absolutely rigid ellipsoidal body, the well bottom surface is supposed to be a plane. The resulting oscillations are associated with spontaneous bending deformations of the drill string, which are accompanied by continuous contact of the bit and the rock. The equations of motion of the bit in the linear approximation are obtained. The analysis of the solution of the linearized equations is carried out, and the frequencies of the arising periodic motions are found. The forms of oscillations under different geometrical parameters of an ellipsoidal bit are analyzed. It is shown that the bit can rotate in backward direction, moving at angular velocities that exceed the angular frequency of the drill string. The research results can be used in the development of new types of drilling rigs.

Abstract:
We experimentally study the influence of wall roughness on bubble drag reduction in turbulent Taylor–Couette flow, i.e. the flow between two concentric, independently rotating cylinders. We measure the drag in the system for the cases with and without air, and add roughness by installing transverse ribs on either one or both of the cylinders. For the smooth-wall case (no ribs) and the case of ribs on the inner cylinder only, we observe strong drag reduction up to DR$=33\,\%$ and DR$=23\,\%$, respectively, for a void fraction of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=6\,\%$. However, with ribs mounted on both cylinders or on the outer cylinder only, the drag reduction is weak, less than DR$=11\,\%$, and thus quite close to the trivial effect of reduced effective density. Flow visualizations show that stable turbulent Taylor vortices – large-scale vortical structures – are induced in these two cases, i.e. the cases with ribs on the outer cylinder. These strong secondary flows move the bubbles away from the boundary layer, making the bubbles less effective than what had previously been observed for the smooth-wall case. Measurements with counter-rotating smooth cylinders, a regime in which pronounced Taylor rolls are also induced, confirm that it is really the Taylor vortices that weaken the bubble drag reduction mechanism. Our findings show that, although bubble drag reduction can indeed be effective for smooth walls, its effect can be spoiled by e.g. biofouling and omnipresent wall roughness, as the roughness can induce strong secondary flows.

In this paper stress, strain and thickness distribution in the steel galvanized hot coil commercial (SGHC) sheet with Round shape ribs formed by roll forming process was investigated by a Finite Element code, ABAQUS software. The stress and strain distributions are considered during forming. Since in round shape ribs the flow of material is easier than quadrilateral one, the Stress distribution was more uniformand thinning strain was concentrated in the ribs with maximum value of 14.5% while this value in quadrilateral shape rib forming is 15.5%. The results show that this method is applicable in reducing the thickness strain.

Abstract:
Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis is responsible for Fusarium wilt of melon. Race 1.2 strains overcome two dominant resistance genes (Fom-1 and Fom-2) and are further divided into two types depending on the symptoms they cause, yellowing or wilting. Partial resistance to F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis race 1.2 was studied by using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population that was developed by single seed descent from an F1 hybrid between ‘Isabelle’, a partially resistant line, and a susceptible line, ‘Védrantais’. Artificial inoculations were performed with a yellowing strain (TST) and a wilting strain (D'Oléon 8) and replicated in six locations. Disease reactions of the parental lines, controls, and RILs were scored using a 1-to-5 scale and by using the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). Phenotypic correlations were highly significant between the different locations and experiments. The heritability of the resistance was high, from 0.72 to 0.96, and 4 to 14 genetic factors were estimated to confer resistance to F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis race 1.2. Thirteen other strains were tested with an RILs subset. Some small strainspecific effects may be involved. These results contribute to a better understanding of the polygenic inheritance of the partial resistance to F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis race 1.2.

Abstract:
Rims of bordered pits form on the primary walls of radially enlarged cambial derivatives prior to the onset of general secondary-wall formation. A recent report (Botany, 2014, 92(7): 495–511) raised the possibility that the chemical composition of the rim might be different from that of the secondary wall. To investigate this, early-stage nonfluorescent and late-stage autofluorescent rims were separated from cambial derivatives of Abies balsamea (L.) Mill. and purified to homogeneity by density-gradient centrifugation. Solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Raman microspectroscopy, combined gas chromatography – mass spectroscopy, enzyme digestion, and chemical resilience data support the interpretation that cellulose alone is the microfibrillar polysaccharide of nonfluorescent early-stage rims. A lignin is additionally present in late-stage rims, and it evidently bonds with cellulose because rims are extraordinarily resistant to hydrolysis by either enzymes or strong acid.

Abstract:
Geogrids have been extensively used in subgrade construction for stabilization purposes of unconfined ballast. Based on well-calibrated microparameters, a series of geogrid-reinforced ballast models with different geogrid sizes and particular structures were developed to reproduce the mechanical behavior of the geogrid under pull-out load in this paper. And the rationality of the DEM model is verified by comparing the evolution law pull-out force measured by laboratory tests and numerical simulations under comparable conditions. Moreover, the macro pull-out force and the internal force distribution of the geogrid were analyzed, and the contact force statistical zones of the particle system were divided accurately according to the results. Meanwhile, both the force transfer mechanism in the geogrid-ballast interface and the sectionalized strain of the geogrid were discussed. And results unveil that the pull-out load is transmitted along the longitudinal ribs to the transverse ribs, and nearly 90% of the load is transmitted to the contact network (in statistical zone 1) in front of the first transverse rib, resulting in strong interlocking between the particles occurs in statistical zone 1. And the second transverse rib is the strength dividing line between strong and weak contact forces. Then, additional pull-out tests on the control groups were conducted, and the sectionalized strain of the geogrid and the peak pull-out force, as well as the energy dissipation were systematically analyzed. In addition, the proposed method used in simulation holds much promise for better understanding of the reinforcement mechanism and further optimizing the performance of geogrid-reinforced structures.

Abstract:
Based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the moving least-squares approximation, a new meshless model to study the geometric nonlinear problem of ribbed rectangular plates is presented. Considering the plate and the ribs separately, the displacement field, the stress, and strain of the plate and the ribs are obtained according to the moving least-squares approximation, the von Karman large deflection theory, and the FSDT. The ribs are attached to the plate by considering the displacement compatible condition along the connections between the ribs and the plate. The virtual strain energy formulation of the plate and the ribs is derived separately, and the nonlinear equilibrium equation of the entire ribbed plate is given by the virtual work principle. In the new meshless model for ribbed plates, there is no limitation to the rib position; for example, the ribs need not to be placed along the mesh lines of the plate as they need to be in FEM, and the change of rib positions will not lead to remeshing of the plate. The proposed model is compared with the FEM models from pieces of literature and ANSYS in several numerical examples, which proves the accuracy of the model.

Abstract:
The importance of interaction between concrete and reinforcement for reinforced concrete (RC) mechanics is a known issue, yet its complexity enforces one to perform in-depth investigations at the microscopic level. In this paper, short RC ties with lengths less than transfer length of bond stresses were chosen to investigate contact zones between concrete and reinforcement. A three-dimensional finite element approach (Model-3D) with simplified geometry of ribs (rib-scale model) is modelled. Its effectiveness is checked against the results yielded by a number of double pull-out tests on RC prisms, where the strain distribution of the bars was measured with strain gauges. As it turns out, the considered model shows a good correlation with experimental data at different loading levels, and the most important factor describing the effectiveness is the geometry of ribs.

The duration of strong shaking is controlled by the source dimension at short distances, and extended by wave porpagation effects as distance increases. Peak amplitudes (peak acceleration, velocity) saturate at different magnitudes at different distances. This change in shape of attenuation curves as magnitude increases can be explained by the trnasition of Green's functions from simple, short pulses at short distances to longer duration wave trains at large distances. Spectral amplitudes demonstrate scalin relations in which loe frequency amplitudes are proportional to seismic moment but high frecuencies increase much less rapidly. The beginnings of large earthquakes look like small earthquakes, consistent with a cascade model for the growth of large events. The mostrecent large earthquake, on sept. 14,995 (Mw=7.4) shows surprisingly weak peak accelerations.

Abstract:
<strong>Introduction:</strong> Statistics has applications in many fields. The point behind all of these applications is that there are questions for which there is no obvious way that we can obtain definitive answers. The reason for this lies in variation, which can arise for many reasons, and this leads to uncertainty. The health sciences provides an excellent example of this as the variation among patients, such as physical, genetic and lifestyle characteristics, lead to different responses to a treatment for a health problem. We are then left with the questions of whether or not a treatment works and, if so, how well.

<strong>Introduction:</strong> Nowadays, we often analyze the benefits of education as a sesame to access employment – the higher your level of education and better your field of study, the better your chances of getting quickly a stable, well paid and rewarding job. Surely this is important and it is a consideration that nobody can ignore when it comes to making a choice of a pathway through school and a career. But it would be inappropriate to think of education and its role in life only in such terms. Education is a source of many other benefits both for the individual and for society.
