Rice (Oryza sativa) ranks third among important crops in Malaysia after rubber and oil palm. It is also a staple food consumed around the world. Rice production is mainly limited by pests and diseases particularly rice stem borers where the most common species in Asia are Scirpophaga incertulas (Yellow stem borer), Chilo polychrysus (Black-headed stem borer), Sesamia inferens (Pink stem borer) and Chilo suppressalis (Striped stem borer). The stem borers are major rice pest as they can cause dead heart and white head symptoms leading to heavy yield losses. As of now, practising Integrated Pest

The striped rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker), is a major pest for rice production in China and the rest of Southeast Asia. Chemical control is the main means to alleviate losses due to this pest, which causes serious environmental pollution. An effective and environmentally friendly approach is needed for the management of the striped rice stem borer. Cysteine proteases in insects could be useful targets for pest management either through engineering plant protease inhibitors, targeting insect digestive cysteine proteases, or through RNA interference-based silencing of cysteine pro

Serpins, also called serine proteinase inhibitors, are widely distributed in eukaryotes. In insects, serpins play important roles in regulating immune responses, gut physiology, and other processes. Here, we report the cloning and characterization of 12 serpin-like cDNAs from the striped rice stem borer (Chilo suppressalis), a major rice pest. The putative proteins share significant sequence similarity with known insect serpins, especially those from lepidopterons. Analysis of functional domains revealed that nine of the cloned serpins are putative trypsin- or chymotrypsin-like inhibitors; two

AbstractSixty selected rice varieties were tested for resistance to damage by the African striped borer, Chilo zacconius. Artificial infestation with first instar larvae in screenhouse showed that Lac 23 (white), IR 2035-120-3, 1R 4625-132-1-2, Colombia 1 and N 21-1 had significantly low “dead hearts” and larval survival. Damage was also low when these varieties were exposed to adults in the screenhouse and in the field. Both local and exotic varieties possessed resistance. Antibiosis conferred resistance to the borer in the varieties screened.

This chapter fleshes out the causal mechanisms motivating the results of Chapter 5 with interviews of traders who cross the Maoist territorial border. It contends the hierarchical form of the caste-based Indian society gives rise to trade networks in which a caste-based division of labor arises: lower-castes engage in local trade, higher-castes in long-distance trade. By enforcing the caste bar on tribal people in long-distance trade, long-distance traders ensure that trade taking place between Maoist-held hinterlands and government-controlled cities remains in the hands of an elite few. Dissenters in the long nineteenth century believed that they were on the right side of history. This chapter argues that the involvement of evangelical Nonconformists in politics was primarily driven by a coherent worldview derived from a Congregationalist understanding of salvation and the gathered nature of the church. That favoured a preference for voluntarism and a commitment to religious equality for all. Although Whig governments responded to the rising electoral clout of Dissenters after 1832 by meeting Dissenting grievances, both they and the Conservatives retained an Erastian approach
