Abstract:
Stroke is a devastating, neurological dysfunction due to brain blood supply disturbance. It is responsible for increasingly high rate of mortality and disability worldwide. This thesis comprises two original studies involving 868 patients at risk of ischemic stroke and/or hemorrhagic stroke. The first study investigated aspirin’s effect among patients with intracranial hemorrhage. Unlike Caucasians which hemorrhagic strokes account for 10-15% of all strokes; in Chinese, intracranial hemorrhages strike up to 35%. After such, anti-platelet agent like aspirin is often avoided for fear of rec

Animals with developmental visuomotor experience or reach training experience in adulthood, however, had tracking thresholds which were substantially increased, and the effects of visual cortex strokes w

Abstract:
Lacunar strokes account for approximately a quarter of all ischaemic strokes and traditionally are thought to result from occlusion of a small deep perforating arteriole in the brain. Lacunar infarcts can be up to 2cm in diameter and are found in deep brain structures such as the thalamus and internal capsule. Despite their prevalence and specific accompanying clinical syndromes, the cause of lacunar stroke and its associated vascular pathology remain unclear. Many hypotheses as to the cause exist, which fall broadly into two categories; firstly, a direct occlusion via emboli or thrombus usual

Lacunar stroke accounts for one quarter of all ischaemic stroke and in the long term carries a greater risk of death and disability than was previously realised. Much of our current knowledge originated from neuropathological studies in the 1950s and 1960s. In the last thirty years, brain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have revolutionised our understanding of lacunar stroke and associated features of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), namely white matter lesions (WML), enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) and brain microbleeds (BMB). The ventral fronto-parietal network has been considered to play a crucial role in reorienting attention towards significant environmental events, while the dorsal system is thought to be dominant in controlling goal-directed behaviour (Corbetta and Shulman 2002). Microglia, the resident macrophages of the brain, were originally assumed to be passive cells, however increasing evidence suggests that microglia play an active role during development and in neurological disorders. Activated microglia release a variety of toxic inflammatory mediators including reactive nitrogen species, cytokines, glutamate and oxygen free radicals, all of which exert a detrimental effect on neuronal survival if secretion is sustained. Microglial responses depend on the signals received from the surrounding microenvironment. Therefore, in this thesis the effects of albumin,
