Abstract:
The species of the family Columbellidae found in West Africa are studied. Five genera are represented: Columbella (1 species), Anachis (1), Mitrella (11), Cotonopsis (1) and Strombina (1). Of the 15 species mentioned, 8 are described as new. The genus Strombina is employed by first time for a West African species.

Neogene deposits of the northern Dominican Republic contain a diverse fossil assemblage that is especially rich in corals and mollusks. To see if faunal change was concordant or discordant within and among taxa and decipher factors controlling distributions, we compared distributions of coral communities, the gastropod families Strombidae and Marginellidae, and the bivalve family Corbulidae. We also incorporated published ranges for the Cardiidae (Vokes, 1989), Cancellariidae (Jung and Petit, 1990), and the columbellid genus Strombina (Jung, 1986).First and last appearances of individual mollu

This study represents a preliminary analysis of variation in size and shape in a large and diverse molluscan clade, the Strombina group, over the past 20 million years. Restored height and width were measured on 5,099 individuals of 72 species and 5 genera. Size was estimated by adding height and width, and shape was estimated by dividing height by width. Patterns of variation were analyzed quantitatively among species, subgenera, and genera using univariate statistical tests comparing means and variances and linear regression. Results of univariate tests show that both shape and size vary amo

Anatomical data for the foregut and reproductive tracts were determined from gross dissections mainly of living specimens. Both the anterior digestive tract and the reproductive systems of the three species are similar in their general plan and conform with what is known for columbellids and neogastropods in general. In contrast to the immense effort that has been put into the geological survey and stratigraphic study of the Neogene of Bocas del Toro region (Panama), little research has been done on the systematics of this region's rich gastropod assemblages. This is the first paper dealing primarily with the Bocas Neogene gastropod assemblages (Strombidae) since the pioneer work of Olsson (1922). Neogene strombid assemblages of the Dominican Republic have recently been reviewed and updated, and, therefore, the Strombidae are a suitable starting point for the revision of the gastropod assemblages from the

Molluscs are the most diverse and abundant tropical American macrofossils, but their distributions and evolution are not well understood. Classic studies by Olsson and Woodring documented a rich Late Miocene to Early Pliocene “Gatunian” fauna throughout the Caribbean and tropical Eastern Pacific, with many species in common between the oceans. This fauna was divided by formation of the Isthmus of Panama, and diverged into distinct Pacific and Caribbean faunas sometime thereafter. Diversity also decreased by about half in the Caribbean. All the living species of the family Strombidae, wherever examined, are characterized by sexual size dimorphism (SSD). Persististrombus deperditus shares all the characters of SSD in these recent species. Size variations due to difference in ecological factors generally occur in allopatric populat

Aberrations on the number of eyes and strombid notches, the evolution of the eye- sight, the use of the anterior canal and other morphological adaptions to the shells of the family are discussed. Animals with 3 and 4 eyes instead of 2 eyes are reported just as shells with 2 strombid notches instead of one strombid notch. The use of the term ‘siphonal canal’ is discouraged and replaced by ‘anterior canal’. A new term is introduced: the strombid lobe for the broadly rounded projection on the outer lip posterior to the strombid notch.

Recovery from 24 h of anaerobiosis was investigated in Sipunculus nudus L. by monitoring changes in the concentrations of anaerobic metabolites in the musculature and in the coelomic plasma. The metabolic events in animals collected during March and October were compared. Anaerobiosis led to an increase of succinate, propionate and acetate in the muscle tissues and the coelomic plasma. Strombine, octopine and alanine (predominantly l- rather than d-alanine) accumulated in the musculature, whereas aspartate and phospho-l-arginine levels decreased. Shell morphology changes relating to sexual maturity and the reproductive cycle of Strombus gigas were studied at a single site within the Barrier Reef lagoon of Belize, Central America. Monthly samples, from July 1981 to June 1983, of transverse tissue sections, through the digestive gland and gonad, were fixed for examination by light microscopy. Sections from all areas of the gonad were used to develop a sexual maturity scale that would permit the maturity of a specimen to be determined from the condition of a single tissue sample. We (Melissari et al, 1985, T.R. 29 [1985] 641) were the first to identify the occurrence of severe protein C deficiency in an adult with thrombophilia and undetectable protein C levels. This report documents our clinical and laboratory resuts of this patient and his family, as well as another 8 patients, in two more, unrelated families. In these unique families with members suffering from severe protein C deficiency (≤6%), no one had experienced neonatal purpura fulminans. Symptoms started mainly in their early twenties, except in 2 patients who first had symptoms at the ages of 11 and 13. The
