<strong>The essence of mass and its relation to the relativistic energy is considered. It is assumed that the rest energy is equal to the total binding energy of the body and can be found through the energies of fundamental fields associated with the substance of the body. Mass as a measure of inertia is calculated by relativistic energy and relativistic momentum. The conclusion is made that after radiation of energy from a system the mass of the system must not decrease, but increase. General Relativity is a hugely successful description of gravitation. However, both theory and observations suggest that General Relativity might have significant classical and quantum corrections in the Strong Gravity regime. Testing the strong field limit of gravity is one of the main objectives of the future gravitational wave detectors. One way to detect strong gravity is through the polarization of gravitational waves. For quasi-normal modes of black-holes in General Relativity, the two polarization states of gravitational waves have the same amplitude and frequency spectrum. Using the pr

A recently introduced technique for extending general relativity is reviewed. This technique, called algebraic extension, yields five theories of gravitation (one of which is Einstein's) that might have interesting implications for strong-field gravitational physics. The particle spectra of these theories are presented. Only one of the four extensions is free of ghosts and tachyons. There exists a (hitherto unexplored) formulation of this theory that contains a gauge-invariant string Lagrangian in the linear approximation.

We investigate the possibility that dark energy does not couple to gravitation in the same way as ordinary matter, yielding a violation of the weak and strong equivalence principles on cosmological scales. We build a transient mechanism in which gravitation is pushed away from general relativity (GR) by a Born–Infeld (BI) gauge interaction acting as an "abnormally weighting (dark) energy" (AWE). This mechanism accounts for the Hubble diagram of far-away supernovae by cosmic acceleration and time variation of the gravitational constant while accounting naturally for the present tests on GR.

AbstractI will outline the conceptual developments that led, through half a century, to the present formulation of string theory. The phenomenological observation of Dolen-Horn-Schmit “duality” in 1967, the formulation, a year later, of the Dual Resonance Model, and its eventual interpretation as a theory of quantum relativistic strings, marked the birth of the hadronic string. Immediately after, however, this elegant S-matrix theory of the strong interactions lost its phenomenological battle against a more, but not quite, conventional quantum field theory risking, around 1974, total oblivion.
