Borri, Claudio, and Claudio Mannini, eds. Aeroelastic Phenomena and Pedestrian-Structure Dynamic Interaction on Non-Conventional Bridges and Footbridges. Firenze University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6453-202-8.

Full text
Abstract:
Fluid-structure and pedestrian-structure interaction phenomena are extremely important for non-conventional bridges. The results presented in this volume concern: simplified formulas for flutter assessment; innovative structural solutions to increase the aeroelastic stability of long-span bridges; numerical simulations of the flow around a benchmark rectangular cylinder; examples of designs of large structures assisted by wind-tunnel tests; analytical, computational and experimental investigation of the synchronisation mechanisms between pedestrians and footbridge structures. The present book is addressed to a wide audience including professionals, doctoral students and researchers, aiming to increase their know-how in the field of wind engineering, bluff-body aerodynamics and bridge dynamics.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph is aimed at improving the quality of medical rehabilitation using digital information technologies. The monograph presents an interdisciplinary system-structural analysis of one of the promising areas in the field of neurorehabilitation — the assessment of smoothness and geometry of motion, which may be little known to the domestic reader. All the above mathematical models and formulas have been analyzed and brought to a single designation. In conclusion, the authors present their generalizing point of view and provide their own materials in the field of another promising area — the assessment of "measures of effort". It is aimed at a wide range of specialists involved in rehabilitation, representatives of different fields of knowledge: clinicians, diagnosticians, cyberneticists, medical physicists, programmers, engineers, etc.

Abstract:
This book is a collection of the academic contributions presented at the conference entitled "Lessons from earthquakes: sources of vulnerability, new design strategies and regulatory developments" which was held at Chianciano Terme on 8 October 2010. The issues addressed are central to Seismic Engineering and comprise a wide range of arguments on both consolidated subjects and innovative aspects in the sector. Among these, appropriate attention is devoted to: analysis of the structural instability revealed on the occasion of seismic events and the lessons that can be drawn from the same; the procedures of assessment of the existing buildings, starting from the phase of monitoring and diagnostics through to the definition of the most opportune intervention techniques; the use of composite materials and alternative methods of seismic protection; non-linear field modelling relating to regular and non-regular structures; and finally, the development of the methods of calculation that have characterised the evolution of the regulatory codes.

Campos, Nauro F., Paul De Grauwe, and Yuemei Ji, eds. The Political Economy of Structural Reforms in Europe. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198821878.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Reforms in labour and product markets play a central role in government policies. The issue of whether structural reforms lead to higher economic growth remains controversial. Researchers in this field tend to agree on the positive role that reforms could play in driving growth as a result of efficiency gains and technological progress. However, reforms may have some negative impacts. One concern is about the timing: structural reforms may not be effective but turn out to be negative when the economy is in a recession and demand is weak. The other concern is structural reforms may lead to income inequality which weakens political support for further reforms. These topics have, in the context of globalization and European integration, attracted great research interest among scholars. This book provides an assessment of past progress and takes stock of current frontier work. It brings together leading contributions from academia, the central banks in Europe, and the OECD. We are convinced that some structural reforms can make a fundamental contribution to improving economic performance across Europe as well as to promoting European integration. Yet we believe that comprehensive, critical, and non-dogmatic assessments of the costs and benefits of different reform programmes are key to guiding future policies. This will allow us to identify the conditions under which structural reforms are beneficial. We believe that future research requires a substantial shift from evaluating generalized direct impacts of structural reforms on economic growth to a broader set of issues and research questions.

Skalko, Thomas K., and Jerome F. Singleton, eds. Recreational Therapy Assessment. Human Kinetics, 2020. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781718243873.

Full text
Abstract:
The profession of recreational therapy relies on the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate the services offered to clients. Determining what those services will be requires a complex assessment process in which therapeutic recreation specialists, recreational therapists, and other rehabilitation professionals integrate client assessment with the classification from the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). Recreational Therapy Assessment is an evidence-based guide that illustrates best practices in performing those assessments in different settings so the needs of each client can be addressed. Recreational Therapy Assessment provides direction on how to assess clients in order to determine their specific needs. The first book of its kind structured to facilitate program planning at an individualized level, readers will find assessment protocols for various consumer groups: Older adultsMental health consumersIndividuals with intellectual disabilitiesPeople with physical disabilitiesThose from diverse cultural backgrounds Of particular value to readers is understanding how the ICF classification system can aid and affirm assessment goals and outcomes, and how practitioners can better integrate their services with those of other members of an interdisciplinary team of providers. The chapters include practical examples, case studies, reflection questions, and learning activities to promote student understanding and assist in the assessment and classification process. Conducting effective consumer assessments is a vital skill for both current and future professionals in the field of recreational therapy. Recreational Therapy Assessment will prepare readers to perform those assessments to help them plan and implement customized services for a range of clients.
