Abstract:
This research consists of experimental load tests and numerical simulations of structural steel connections with various filler materials to study the effect of non-steel fillers on the connection strength. Non-steel fillers are used in the steel connections to provide thermal insulation by reducing thermal bridging. Eight specimens having steel and polypropylene filler plates of various thicknesses were tested in the laboratory. The collected data were compared to a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using ABAQUS to validate the numerical results. After validation, three parametric studies were co

Abstract:
In this study, sound radiation and power flow characteristics of plates which constitute the bodies of common engineering applications like cars and household appliances are investigated. Three different vibro-acoustical measurement techniques are used in an integrated manner and results obtained are compared with those obtained from analytical models developed. Two-microphone sound intensity measurement with a probe utilizing side-by-side configuration is used to analyze the near-field radiation characteristics of a square steel plate excited by a shaker at its midpoint. Surface intensity is

Paracha, N. B. "The compressive post-buckling behaviour of thin plates with cutouts." Thesis, Cranfield Institute of Technology, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/938.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an investigation of the buckling and post-buckling behaviour of plates with cutouts under uniform compression. The theoretical analysis developed for this purpose is based on a combined finite element/-spline procedure which formulates a mathematical representation of the membrane stresses within the plate according to its flat and unbuckled state. These mathematical representations are then utilised in the subsequent energy analysis to determine the point of initial buckling and in a semi-energy post-buckling analysis to determine behaviour of plate after initial instabil

Unlike the global Euler buckling of slender structures under compressive loads, tubular and cellular structures deform with their walls buckling as individual supported plates. Abstract:
The global stiffness behaviour of modular-based two storey timber structures was studied under prescribed horizontal displacements at the upper corners of the volume modules. To be able to study this behaviour, a numerical finite element model was created in Abaqus. A parametric study was performed in which the geometry and spring stiffness of joints were varied until the enough stiff module was attained for safe transfer of shear forces through the module structure. The FE-model was parameterized to have possibility to vary positions of door and window openings in the volume modules. These op
