This thesis reports on the elemental growth of oxide thin films including TiO<sub>x</sub>, BaO<sub>x</sub> and Ba<sub>x</sub>Ti<sub>y</sub>O<sub>z</sub> by Ti/Ba deposition and oxidation. The films were grown on two different substrates, Au(111) and SrTiO₃(001), and studied using a variety of surface characterisation techniques. On the reconstructed Au(111) surface, three different TiO<sub>x</sub> structures were obtained with increasing Ti amounts deposited: a (2 × 2) Ti₂O₃ honeycomb structure, a pinwheel structure that is the result of a Moiré pattern, and a triangular island TiO<sub>1.30</s

A study of the subsolidus region of the BaO-La2O3-V 2O5 phase diagram has been carried out. Four ternary phases can be prepared, one of which has not been previously identified. The four ternary phases are a palmierite solid solution Ba3-3xLa2x V2O8, Ba2LaV3O11, BaLa10V4O26 (new phase) and Ba3La 40V12O93. Novel low temperature wet chemical processes for the synthesis of gels and ultrafine powders of BaTiO₃ and BaTi₄O₉ were developed. Under acidic conditions a titanyl acylate precursor was obtained by molecular modification of titanium isopropoxide. The thesis studies the sintering behaviours and mechanical properties of perovskite-structured Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF) ceramics. The sintering behaviours of BSCF are studied by sintering BSCF powder using a series of sintering temperatures and dwell times. Under all circumstances, only a cubic perovskite structure is identified in as-sintered samples. Structural and optical properties of ZnO nanostructures synthesized by low energy ion implantation technique were examined. ZnO molecular ions were implanted into Si/SiO2 substrates at room temperature and then furnace annealed under different temperatures and environments.
