Abstract:
The present paper is an introduction to and analysis of the article “Literary criticism must be scientific”, presented here for the first time in English translation. The original was published by Lotman in 1967 in the journal Voprosy Literatury. The article by Lotman is a part of a wider debate, started in 1963, that saw structuralists and their opponents dispute the validity and heuristic value of structuralist methodology in literary criticism. The aim of the introduction is to explore Lotman’s engagements with his intellectual context as they emerge in his 1967 article. The first part of the paper discusses the wider context of the debate, and explores the positions of the opponents of structuralism and the ways in which Lotman relates to them. The second part of the paper analyses how Lotman and his structuralist colleagues related to the official Soviet ideology, the diamat. In both cases, it will be seen how Lotman engaged certain aspects of his opponents’ ideas, as well as the official ideology, in order to further his goal of reconciling structuralism and historicism.

Abstract:
The article features the phenomenon of electronic literary text. The research objective was to identify the structural and semantic features of electronic literary texts within the framework of post-structuralism. The electronic literary text resulted not only from the development of information technology: it is also the product of the development of philosophical and linguistics ideas of post-structuralism. The post-structuralism perspective was not repeated exactly on the technological level of the electronic text representation. However, the post-structuralist text theory was reflected in the electronic literary text structure, i.e. its rhizomatic, decentered, fragmentary, intertextual, and simulation character. In particular, the attempt to build cohesion of semiotically diverse components in the electronic environment reflects the post-structuralists idea of chaos and disorganization. The attempt to provide the navigation in this multi-component unity by the key-word hyperlinks reflects the idea of the total interconnectivity of all structural components, i.e. intertextuality. The phenomenon of intertextuality defines the culmination of decenterment and nomadism in the text theory. It is connected with the rhizomatic concept and hypertextuality. The research used electronic literary texts based on Adobe Flash and HTML. The research employed general scientific methods, such as monitoring and description, in conjunction with the method of comparative linguistic analysis. The author concludes that the text perception and electronic virtual world immersion become much more important than the artifacts in the electronic literature of XXI century. The electronic literary text became the poststructuralist concept of the new esthetic object, lost its integrity and composition stability, and opened itself to external input.

Abstract:
Romantic imagination is against any fixation of form and rules and regulations but any creative attempt, however anti-rule it may be, must have some underlying principles governing its structure. This article explores Wordsworth's Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood from a structuralist perspective. Structuralism with its roots in Ferdinand de Saussure’s structural view of language sees cultural phenomena and literary endeavors as structured based on the underlying rules governing the writing of the creative work. This article joins two contradictory ideas: Romantic poetry which glorifies the author's subjectivity and structuralism which beliefs in the death of the author. However, this article analyzes the ode from a structuralist perspective and principles of criticism: parallels and echoes, reflections and repetitions, contrasts, and patterns of language and imagery. It also studies the Ode's relationship with the tradition of the genre and its differences from and similarities to other odes.

Michelson, Annette. "Art and the Structuralist Perspective." October 169 (August 2019): 3–16. http://dx.doi.org/10.1162/octo_a_00357.

Full text
Abstract:
Introducing Structuralism and theories of Claude Lévi-Strauss to American audiences in a 1970 lecture at the Guggenheim Museum, Annette Michelson stresses the importance of the linguistic mode for structuralist analysis and examines the nature and limits of its consequences for art and aesthetics. Structuralist anthropology, the author argues, is fundamentally rationalist in approach, proposing an intelligibility of the universe through the organization of differences into overarching schema; it is the relationship between signs, rather than the nature of the individual signs themselves, that determines meaning. Michelson concludes that while such a method may seem applicable to contemporary art, the radically rational stance of Structuralism inhibits our understanding of it. Rather than serving a semantic function, one that could be elucidated through structural analysis, art informs us of the nature of consciousness itself.

Abstract:
From the perspective of formalism theory, this study aims to reveal that a research on literary texts does not only pay attention to textual facts existing in literary works, but also needs to pay attention to what exists outside the text. In the literary works, the element of defamiliarization holds that literary language is able to express facts of stories using unfamiliar languages. From the perspective of structuralism theory, this study aims to reveal that structuralism is conceptually a continuation of formalism which largely depends on language. Structuralism theory has a close relationship with linguistics, especially in analyzing the functions of the language used. The analysis of language function can help understanding language semiotics that views literature as a sign that then led to literary semiotics. Therefore, functioning to examine a phenomenon, the concept of semiotic structuralism emerged as a social fact. Critical approach was deemed suitable to be used in this study because formalism theory and structuralism theory are part of a social construction and part of a discursive formation in the formation of subject and reality. As a result, it could be seen the position of formalism theory and structuralism theory in literary research of which raw material is language. The findings in this study are that the formalism theory in its development is dynamic and its language construction stimulates readers to respond. In principle, literary work is not autonomous because it contains author’s feelings and society’s mind. Literary research should exceed the boundaries of formalism and be able to create new vocabularies in writing novels. In the novel, there is intertextual polyvalence, which is a series and intensive dialogic linkages that are capable of giving birth to new novels. Another finding is that structuralism theory has a close relationship with linguistics, for example phonological elements in linguistics which can help literary theory in analyzing sound levels in oral literary works. This theory has also developed a study of poetry to the aesthetic level so that this study has shifted from its original aspects of verbal art only to all art and artistic aesthetics in the present time. This shift distinguishes the views between formalism and structuralism in relation to norms and values inherent in language.

Abstract:
Structuralism is a conceptual and methodological approach to describing and analyzing literature texts. This approach sees the text as separate entity that should be treated independently. In literature, (the author, the text, the reader) focuses on the text. Ferdinand de Saussure, a Swiss linguist, semiotician, and philosopher propounded the structuralism theory also known as structuralism. This approach focuses on the literary text, the text is the center for the analysis. It ignores the author's life and environment, i.e. in analyzing the structures of literary text, Structuralism is general theory of culture and methodology that implies that elements of human culture must be understood by the way of their relationship to a broader system. This makes it different from approaches like psychoanalysis and historical-biographical approach that focuses on the psychology the biography of the writer, the environment, and the social environment, structuralism only cares about the text and uses textual elements to understand meaning. From the perspective of Structuralism this paper tries to analyze Latif Halmat’e poem (Gorani). Dualism is a concept of structuralism, and this paper concludes that Latif Halmats poem is based on dualism. The aim of this research is to further clarify the way in which the Structuralism method is applied to poetry in order to further clarify the authority of this method over analyzing poetic texts.

Abstract:
This article entitled 'Postmodern and Post Structuralism: A Literary Dichotomy' has fairly attempted to compare and contrast between the most discussed and comprehensive notions of postmodernism and post structuralism in a possible precise form. In addition, the study focuses on dichotomies of these trends against their respective pre-forms, 'modernism' and 'structuralism' as well. Their tendencies in literary creation and theory have been briefly discussed. The study method it has availed is essentially the qualitative research design which is concerned with establishing answers to 'why' and 'how' of the study in question. The writing is based on the views on the foreign writers, scholars and critics in different published materials or the online resources. The views forwarded by the aforementioned personalities have been duly considered and cited in both types of citations-direct as well as paraphrased versions. This study has followed the comparison and contrast as its theory. After the discussion or analysis, the findings have been deducted that these two terms are confusing especially for the beginners because there are certain similarities as well as dissimilarities between them in specific cases. The study is expected to be helpful for both the teacher and students of literature especially in the field pedagogy or the individuals who are not directly related to pedagogical issue.

Abstract:
Pre-structural critical approaches sought to exclude the text from their fields of study, contenting themselves with making it a document that serves its historical, social, psychological and other goals. After that, the pioneers of structuralism focused in their beginnings on the inside of the text, trying to realize how the linguistic structures are interconnected, ignoring the internal structure of the text. Goldmanian structuralism presented itself as an alternative to formal structuralism. Goldman was inspired by sociological and philosophical ideas and reformulated them in line with his dialectical Marxist thought. Formative structuralism is based on revealing the relationship between the mentality of a particular social group and the overall structure of the literary work. In this research, we will try, based on the formative structuralism approach, in two main chapters, to answer what the concepts of formative structuralism are, and how and when did formative structuralism appear. As for the second chapter, the Goldmanian formative constructivism approach was applied in the story (Collect Hailstones) by (Mohsen Ahmed Omar). Abstract:
This research is based on a comprehensive review of formal structuralism as an internal, textual, and analytic approach. This approach adopts a pragmatic analysis of text patterns according to a textual relationship network that inherently links text structures which are distributed into textual binaries and features, such as: comprehensiveness, formality transformations, and the internal organisation of the text. This research demonstrates how formal structuralism try to isolate literary texts from their authors, audiences and possibly all social, economic, political, philosophical, and intellectual dimensions of a text. This is because formal structuralism is based on the idea of internal and textual analysis that uses linguistic features. Formal structuralism, however, adopts a holistic and highly organized approach to analyse texts according to principles of comprehensiveness, organisation, internal transformations and movement, consensual and opposite binaries inside the text, and most importantly the autonomy of the text

Abstract:
The present study is a general description of the theoretical project of cognitive poetics and its implications for the study of literature. The main hypothesis is that cognitive poetics is the contemporary continuation of the analytical project of Poetics, with its rich tradition stretching from Aristotle to French Structuralism. As cognitive poetics is principally concerned with the relationship between texts and reading experience, it has contributed significantly to the evolution of literary studies. In this light, the paper identifies the following analytical and theoretical innovations of cognitive poetics: 1) restoring the connection between literary and "natural" languages; 2) removing the politicized dimension of literary studies, influenced by post-structuralism and critical theory (while maintaining, in an exploratory and explanatory sense, a critical perspective on language and literature); 3) elevating the reading experience and the potential variations of "meaning"; 4) establishing connections between the humanist "universalism" of the traditional perspective on literature and modern and postmodern relativism, by assuming a cognitive and cultural explanation of literature; 5) exploring the context and the historical and cultural determinations of literature; 6) innovating upon notional language, necessary for text analysis.

Abstract:
The article examines the development of narratology from its inception to the latest trends, showing the crisis of discipline and the prospects for the future progress. Within structuralism and semiotics ‘narrative’ was one of the study fields uncovering ‘deep structure’. The quest for universal categories determined the ambition of structural narratology as a discipline, with the help of the description reducing narrative structure to the combination of formal elements. In the article Introduction à l’analyse structurale des récits by Roland Barthes that was published in the journal Communications 8 in 1966, the understanding of the narrative did not confine to literary narratives alone, but it became an object of research for structural narratology. Comprehension of the structure of text within narratology was influenced by the binary model of the sign offered by Ferdinand de Saussure, as well as latest discoveries in linguistics that were discussed and incorporated in the literary theory during the 1950s and 1960s. Morphology of the Folktale by Vladimir Propp is one of the milestones in the context of classical narratology, analysing the narrative as a grammatical system. Selecting 100 Russian folktales as a research object, Propp described their general structure and regularities, demonstrating the limited number of elements that were used, and offered the classification after morphological parameters. French structuralists later on hastily applied these features to the analysis of literary narrative, but it should be noted that the universal model of plot proposed by Propp illustrates primitive narratives where reiteration has a functional dimension by transmitting texts. Although primitive narratives follow a certain scheme, the basic units of the narrative demonstrate universal phenomenon. It was soon realized by the structuralists. Mutual emulation created a series of theoretical constructions seeking for the smallest narrative unit, most comprehensive explanation of the concept of narrative, venturously offering an arsenal with new concepts in order to make the description process more accurate. Gérard Genette replaced the binary opposition of story/fable that was adopted from formalists with the three-part model, thus offering new perspectives on the temporality and the point of view in the analysis of literary text. Decentralized approach to knowledge of Post-Structuralism, as well as interest in ideologies, marginalized and the other, contributed to the crisis of formal approach in narratology. A new challenge was also presented by more complicated types of literary narratives—often atopic, atemporal, fragmented. Particular importance in the crisis of structural narratology was the idea of “grand narratives”—a term introduced by the French philosopher Jean-François Lyotard in his significant book La condition postmodern: rapport sur le savoir (1979). Although Lyotard’s study is dedicated to science, universal statements more widely influenced culture studies and the development of literary theory. In the context of narratology Lyotard contributed to a double ‘fracture’. First, the quest for narrative structure turned out to be not only intractable, but also abstract, because of the lack of the context. Second, “small narratives” came to the forefront, thus emphasizing the other and marginal, for instance, gender, race, social class, etc. This shift of interest from structure to context was termed by David Herman as the postclassical phase in narratology that initially sought to divest from the overwhelming heritage of structuralism, interacting more with gender and postcolonial studies as well as with the New Historicism and anthropological theories. In the coming decades the denial of structural heritage is softened. The expanded criticism that was carried out by post-structuralists contributed not only to a new theory influx in the narrative research, but also hybridisation. The change of focus marked rather radical rearrangement of interest in narratology, switching from the systemic view of literary functions to the analysis of context and cognitive poetics. Narratology nowadays is not evading from the epistemic polimodality of the text that rejects the categories of neutral and universal. On the contrary, the various theoretical ramifications demonstrate avoidance of creating generalized concepts and new supertheories.

Abstract:
Roland Barthes, a French philosopher and linguist, influenced the entire world philology. The basis of all his scientific works is the development of a methodology for studying a literary work, an important task of which is to establish the structure of the work. Barthes’s complements the formulated theoretical propositions with examples of the analysis of specific works, which are examples of structural analysis for literary researchers. Bartes’s scientific and methodological heritage is defined by three main concepts: structuralism, semiotics and linguistic symbolism, which are consubstantial concepts, closely related to each other. According to Barthes, structuralism, generated by the language model, appears as a type of creative practice consisting of the dismemberment of reality, and then of its reconstruction based on the analogy of the functions of the detectable units. Bulgakov᾿s work “The Master and Margarita” has never been subjected to structural analysis following the example of Bartes able to reveal its semiotic and symbolic meaning. The article is devoted to the structural consecration of the genre belonging of the work as a personal “diary” of the writer and the intentional interaction of two large narrative units that make up the intertext. Barthes’s semiotic structuralism helps to see the writer’s unique innovation in the narrative structure of the work, deep symbolism generated by biographical and historical sociology.

Research in African literature articulated a number of literary and philosophical theories, particularly in the way that they can potentially undo conventional understandings of gender in the Nigerian context. This paper seeks to apply these insights in the form of a critical narratology. Although narratology has a structuralist or formalist orientation, having its theoretical beginning in Saussures modern linguistics, and like structuralism, aspires to scientific or universalist claims, it, also, examines the way in which narratives affect the way we perceive the world. This paper will attempt to mobilise narratology critically, with the benefit of the insights emerging from various articles, in order to help our understanding of the question of gender and social themes in Nigerian post-colonial literature. Most especially, this paper will visualise the analysis of structural narratology and finally with feminist narratology in order to correct the inadequacies of structural narratology and the suppression of women in texts. Keywords: African literature, feminist narratology, gender identity, structural narratology

Abstract:
This research aims to reveal the author's worldview, namely Ghassan Kanafani as a collective subject in his short story entitled "Ardhu al-Burtuqol al-Haziin" in an anthology of short stories with the same title using the genetic structuralism perspective of Lucian Goldmann. Goldmann's genetic structuralism emphasizes the analysis of the author's worldview as a representative of a particular social group, with his analysis departing from the structure of the literature work itself. Three research variables in genetic structuralism are the structure of literary works, worldview, and social structures. This research is qualitative-descriptive research with a dialectical method of analysis. The result of the discussion is there are many binary oppositions found in this short story “Ardhu al-Burtuqol al-Haziin”. Ghassan’s worldview in this short story is the economic downturn of the Palestinian people due to the 1948 Nakba Day and the loss of their national identity which was symbolized by an orange. This Ghassan Kanafani's worldview is the view of his group, namely the nationalist social group of workers and peasants.

Abstract:
Laamiyat al-Arab is a great literary work that was written during the Jahili Arabs, and received great attention from writers and linguists. However, the aspects of the values it contains and its relation to the social context that underlies Laamiyat al-Arabs’ work are not well-documented. Through Goldmann's genetic structuralism approach, the authors reveal the values, characters, and the internal and external factors generating the Laamiyat al-Arab literature. The results show that the lower class of Jahili Arab community, despite their life’s hardship and distress, could deliver noble values and characters of the marginalized people of its time. Further studies are of great necessity to investigate the contents of literary works other than Laamiyat al-Arab to get an actual picture of Jahili Arabs’ literature.

Abstract:
While Herrick is known for his religious poetry, the intersection of Islam and his work has not been explored in existing literature. The article examines the potential for Islamic meanings within Robert Herrick's poem "To Daffodils" through post-structuralist and intertextual lenses of literary analysis. The study employs the tenets of post-structuralism to explore the poem's thematic significance in relation to Islam. The analysis takes into account the temporal context of Herrick's 17th century era and the emergence of secularism, as well as the notion of the universality of Islam. The study concludes that the poem serves as a powerful reminder of the transient nature of human life, which is also a central theme in Islamic ethos. Herrick's work can be seen as an exemplar of Islamic knowledge, which imparts messages to humans about the temporality of life and its purposes and its eventual end. This article highlights the importance of Islamic reading of Herrick’s literature conveying important messages about the human condition and the significance of contemplating the ephemeral nature of life.

Abstract:
Literary criticism was an important part of Western literary theory in the 20th century and has not lost its importance to this day. Criticism has an active influence on the literary process, as well as directly on the formation of public consciousness. This article discusses two important approaches, the principle of literary criticism. The archetypal literary criticism and the theory of intertextuality. Archetypal literary criticism is a theory that interprets a text by focusing on mythological motifs and archetypes in narrative, symbols, imagery, and character types that recur in different literary works. Analysis of the inclusions of intertext in the text of a work of art gives reason to consider them as one of the most important devices in the writer's stylistic system. The ability to integrate elements of another text into one's own work and introduce one's own text into the public consciousness is called "intertextualization" within the framework of this theory. Intertextuality is a common property of texts, expressed in the presence of links between them, due to which texts (or parts of them) can explicitly or implicitly refer to each other in a variety of ways. It is worth noting that the archetypal literary criticism and the theory of intertextuality have deep internal theoretical connections, which boil down to three main points: these are literary repetitions, general views on literature, and the consideration of literature as a repository of memory. Although these theories arose in the era of different cultural and historical paradigms - structuralism and post-structuralism, they have much in common in terms of connotation. Being different theoretical systems of literary criticism, archetypal criticism and intertextuality are closely connected by the presence of an element of psychological criticality in both. This article searches for similarities between the two indicated systems in these three aspects and substantiates their theoretical connection, which proves the complementary nature of these two theories.

Abstract:
Poetry as a literary work contains the author's thoughts related to social reality in society. This allows poetry to be analyzed regarding the creation of its origins which reflect portraits of life using the study of genetic structuralism. One of the poems that can be studied using genetic structuralism is the poem Tersebab Aku Melayu: Buku Sajak Penggal Kedua by Taufik Ikram Jamil regarding the Malay dimension. This study aims to describe the relationship between the structure of poetry and social structure, human facts, and the author's worldview in the poem Tersebab Aku Melayu: Buku Sajak Penggal Kedua by Taufik Ikram Jamil with a study of genetic structuralism that describes the Malay dimension. Abstract:
Yu.M. Lotman’s creative path from philologist to philosopher was difficult and risky. The scientist resolutely moved away from the mossy traditions of Soviet vulgar sociological literary criticism and began to master modern methods of text analysis developed by structuralism and semiotics. Since structuralism and semiotics were banned in Soviet science as products of bourgeois ideology, Lotman and his colleagues at the Tartu-Moscow School called the subject of their research “secondary modeling systems”, to which they referred not only literary texts, but also texts of art, texts of behavior, city, history, etc. Thus, a culturological turn took place in the methodology of Lotman and his associates, which was expressed in the fact that the philosophy of culture became the theoretical basis of structural analysis, and the philosophy of history became the historical and cultural approach. With his works in the field of humanities, Lotman showed that the key to understanding and predicting history is culture, and for building a philosophy of history is the philosophy of culture. Lotman actually acted as a profound theorist and philosopher of culture on a par with such domestic thinkers as A.F. Losev, M.M. Bakhtin, or foreign ones like O. Spengler, A. Toynbee, K. Levi-Strauss, R. Barth or U. Eco.

Abstract:
Purpose of the paper: to analyze, with «Letters from the Khutor (Farm, small village)» as the study material, the methods of communication with the reader, author strategies of addressing the recipient, drawing his attention, the technologies of «furthering an idea» and creating an atmosphere of trust and understanding. Also analyzed are their advantages, disadvantages, and shortcomings. Methods. Observation, analysis, and generalization, as well as literary concepts of receptive aesthetics, structuralism, post-structuralism, and mythological criticism enabled us to identify the fictional author of the letters and the Exemplary Reader (recipient) of the literary work in question. We were also able to define interaction strategies between the writer and the reader. Results and conclusions. In his «Letters», P. Kulish offers the reader a postmodern literary game, in the process of which the Exemplary Reader has to decipher certain meanings and allusions. Particularly, the writer creates the image of a fictional author of the text. It’s an idealized image of a khutor-owning Cossack (free, educated, and wealthy). Another persona the fictional writer adopts is the image of the Apostle Paul, who bestows certain significance (even sacredness) unto the text, making it into a spiritual message. In communication with the reader, P. Kulish uses the technology of text fragmentation, repetition, addressing the reader directly, intimation, and burlesque sentimentalist stylization of the narrative. Such stylization and demonstrative moralizing are considered to be communication shortcomings. Keywords: P. Kulish, game, author, reader, «Model/Ideal reader», text, hoax, stylization.

Abstract:
East, South, and Southeast Asians are often treated inferiorly in the U.S. Aggregately, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought racial issues against them to the surface. Thus, literature on and/or about inferior minorities needs to be written by authors who belong to them. It is because literary works are not created in a vacuum. External factors have a hand in their creation. Kwan’s Rich People Problems serves as the closure for the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. As a Singaporean-born author who immigrated to the U.S., he is exposed to the American Dream myth. This research then aims to discover how he internalizes it in the novel. Employing Goldmann’s Genetic Structuralism, it operates the structuralism approach through the Marxist lens. It utilizes Kwan’s social class to determine his worldview manifested in the structure of the novel. While the novel is the source of primary data, his biography collected from relevant sources becomes secondary data. His take on American Dream crystalizes in form of the characterization and plot of the novel. He appends the characters with backstories and improvements. They are embedded with determination, perseverance, hard work, loyalty, and reinvention, revamping their poor beginnings into rich entrepreneurs, experts, employees, and trophy spouses.

Abstract:
Structuralism commonly deals with signs and signification process to produce meaning of any text based on structures tied in signifier and signified. It is theoretical concept developed by Ferdinand de Saussure which, later on, became conversant in art and literature known as structuralism and is applied in literary texts. From the structural sense, myth is one of the prominent components to connect both visible and implicit signification attuned to a language. Mythical structuralism tends to embody a system of communication where mythical references and allusions indicate message. That is, myth cannot be simply categorized as an object or image. Rather, it is a mode of significations liked in the chain, both apparent and non apparent. Specifically, myth is structural sign of the past whose signification process can be traced into the language in use as in second order. Considering this, myth as structural analysis is applied to see undercurrent mythical allusions and references in W.B. Yeats' "Sailing to Byzantium". I focus on the ideas and theoretical concepts employed by Ferdinand de Saussure, Roland Barthes, and Julia Kristeva. These scholars try to see language as an embodiment of structure: both the visible and invisible within certain linguistic entity incorporated with signs, signifiers, signified and signification process. Myth as the signification process is discussed as latent and visible structures exposed in language.

I recently heard a paper by a prominent literary scholar, which I thought would be an analysis of his encounter with a text. (I am familiar enough with current literary analysis to know that it would certainly not be an analysis of a text.) It turned out instead to be purely autobiographical. In talking about this later with a friend of mine from the Italian department, he told me that this was a new trend. As he put it: “We used to do Dante's life and works, then with New Criticism we did ‘the work,’ then with New Historicism we did Dante's works in their historical location, then with post-structuralism we did Dante and me, and now we just do me.’

Abstract:
This study aims to determine the value theory of character education and structural theory. In line with the research objectives, this research uses qualitative research using descriptive methods. The data used in this study is a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic elements of literary works which include structural theory and the values of character education contained in the novel. The data source used in this research is the novel "One Academic Year" by Junior Dany Wibisono. The results of the analysis of the One Academic Year novel include structural theories such as intrinsic elements consisting of: (1) theme, namely the intrinsic elements of the novel which are the basis of the story, (2) plot/plot which is the storyline, (3) setting which refers to the background. time, atmosphere, and place of the story, (4) characterization is the determination of the character or character of the character, (5) point of view, namely the direction of a writer's point of view in conveying a story, (6) mandate, which is a moral message written by the author of the story. In addition, there are also extrinsic elements. The extrinsic element is the opposite of the novel's intrinsic element. The extrinsic elements of the novel are elements that are outside the literary work, but indirectly affect the structure of the literary work. The extrinsic element of a literary work depends on the author telling the work. Extrinsic elements for example are the values contained, background, and social situation. After structural theory, there are also character education values contained in the novel.

Abstract:
What is the value of literature in society today? This question seems fundamental and has already become the focus for many writers and critics in contemporary French literature, especially after the appearance of Structuralism. The objective of this paper is not to question the function of literature in society but to insist on the existential aspect of the literature and his relationship with the world of language. Specifically, we focus on the language element as an “another” reality that becomes not only space of creation, but opens a visible way to critique. Thus, the dialectical relationship between creative writing and language itself argues contemporary literature. To justify this hypothesis, we take as example the case of Roland Barthes and Jacques Lacan, who implement the language in literary analysis. Towards the literary creation, Christian Prigent exemplifies contemporary writer who treats language as the essence of his literary works.

Abstract:
Being a part of a certain culture makes a literary work is not immune from its influence. This applies also to literary works which deliver stories from the past, Pramoedya Ananta Toer's The King, The Witch and The Priest for example. To confirm the influence, this article would like to see the structure of myth in this story with the help of Greimas' Actantial Model. Under the approach of structuralism, finding the six actants of some important actions selected from the plot analysis is conducted to discover the pattern. The pattern then is used to understand the structure of mythfound in the story. This study results on the existence of the structure of myth whereby the good one always wins at the end of the story, no matter how powerful the evil is.

J. R. R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings, made his unique concept of language as the cornerstone of his academic thought and literary creation. He created an immortal epic legend, brought readers a sense of reality and created an awesome mythological system for Britain. However, he was often criticized for his lack of academic contributions. Combining the development and reasons of linguistics in the 20th century, this paper discusses Tolkien’s linguistic aesthetics, making a brief analysis of their academic significance, and demonstrates Tolkien’s efforts to save philology under the backdrop of structuralism.

Abstract:
Abstract This article concerns itself with Gérard Genette’s reception in Germanophone literary study. Through an analysis of the rhetorical substrate from which Genette’s terminology draws its specific tension, the article determines that Genette is not only an excessive systematist, but also and simultaneously an author who battles received attempts at order and who foregrounds doubts about the idea of order. In this way, he displays a kinship with such theorists as Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida. The receptions of the rhetorical construction of Genette’s texts and of the particular strategies of structuralism to which that construction refers did not occur synchronously in French, American, Russian, and German literary studies. The article demonstrates that, while German literary theory occasionally discusses Genette’s positioning within the field, there remains a general absence of the recognition that practically all of his books display a definite proximity to deconstruction, and that this proximity plays a central role in Genette’s enire theoretical edifice. This text is, last but not least, a call to read literary-theoretical texts in their aesthetic contexts.
