The market will continue to undergo changes, as well as the industrial market, so as to enable the perpetrators of the industry to persevere in the midst of market competition, to determine market structures, can be used a method often referred to as an industrial concentration. This is often the case in the midst of economic turmoil, with the industrial concentration based on SCP (Structure-Conduct-Performance) of the problems associated with market conditions and structure will be predicted. This study deals with the understanding, insight, and concept of industrial concentration. The method used is qualitative descriptive. The purpose of this research is to analyze industrial concentration as one part of the economic substance.

Abstract:
Value chain analysis has been adopted by several research and funding institutions for analysing local development opportunities. Development practitioners, however, are still looking for more solid grounds for value chain strategy development, especially since the expected outcomes of interventions, such as poverty reduction, have been unclear. This paper aims to extend the Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) framework to connect value chain strategies, such as product, market, technology and governance choices, to outcomes with respect to local development. The extended SCP framework is developed through a literature review and an analysis of structure, conduct and performance aspects and their interactions. In this extended value chain SCP framework, the unit of analysis is not a firm, but a portion of a value chain in a territory, a local netchain, competing against another netchain elsewhere. The proposed value chain SCP framework highlights categories of structure, conduct and performance for value chains and provides an integrated approach to explore possible interactions among those categories. The use of the value chain SCP framework will help practitioners to evaluate different policy interventions. The application of this framework to devise strategies for several value chains is expected in future research, as well as the inclusion of social and environmental conduct and performance categories.

Abstract:
The Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) paradigm is commonly used in the field of industrial organization. The paradigm links market structure, firm behavior, and economic performance. Questions of industry organization, firm decision-making and economic efficiency in a wide variety of markets have been addressed using the SCP model. This paper applies the SCP paradigm to the area of economic education. To do this, an alternative model of economic education is developed. In this model, students are viewed as producers (of learning) while instructors determine the institutional setting and are one of the inputs into the production process. This view separates the areas where instructors may exert some control (setting class structure and providing good teaching) from the area where they have little control — student behavior. Using the model developed, this study employs an experiment to investigate student behavior. Students are placed in a strategic situation in which they must choose when and how much to study for weekly quizzes. The experiment represents a unique approach in economic education research and sheds light on student decision making.

Abstract:
The paper intends to contribute to readers’ comprehension of the Greek telecommunications market, focusing on the strategic decisions associated with network tower-sharing analysis in Greece. The Greek telecommunications industry is described for the first time following the Structure–Conduct–Performance (SCP) paradigm of Industrial Organisation (IO), as a methodological tool of analysis. In that respect, an SCP model in its extended form is constructed, aiming to examine how structure, conduct, and performance interrelate to each other. More precisely, the SCP model explains how strategic decisions regarding tower infrastructure sharing between 2013–2022 were developed, as a result of a series of interactions and feedback effects, amongst market structure, operators’ conducts, and performances, resulting in strengthening competition and reshaping market structure with the entrance of a new player in the Greek mobile market, an independent TowerCo (Athens, Greece) in Greece. International tendencies and competition issues influencing domestic growth potentialities and alternative operators’ concentration will be addressed, too. The paper concludes with presenting a basically qualitative, explanatory interpretive analysis of the perspectives of network tower-sharing analysis in the Greek telecommunication industry, including policy recommendations for the near future and thoughts on future research, as well.

Abstract:
The market structure, conducts and performance of the Indian banking sector have changed since the introduction of banking sector reforms. Slower economic growth, coupled with asset quality problems in recent years, has taken a toll on the overall health of the Indian banking sector. Higher statutory capital requirement under Basel III has posed another major challenge to the Indian banks. The purpose of the study is to examine the impact of structural changes and conduct of Indian commercial banks on their profitability in the paradigm of structure–conduct–performance (SCP) framework. Market concentration, bank-specific/macroeconomic variables have been considered as important determinants of the profitability. The regression results find a negative relationship between profitability and market concentration and reject SCP hypotheses. The study found that capitalization, credit risk, leverage and ownership structure are the most important determinants of the profitability of Indian banks. The study also found that financial crisis had no significant impact on the profitability of Indian banks. JEL Classification: C4, G21, G28, L19

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to present and exemplify traditional and neoclassical approaches to market structure and tourism firm performance analysis. The paper tackles some of the industrial economic thinking trends which were meant to fill the gaps left by the traditional approaches. Two approaches stand out from among the industrial economic trends: SCP paradigm and game theory. The results show that the strategy tourism operators prefer is to practise high prices; however there is no certainty that the competitors would adhere to such an idea at the beginning or during the season.

Abstract:
Batik Semarang is one of Indonesia’s national heritage, which once had disappered in Japan colonialism era. In 2006, the city government of Semarang started to redevelop Batik Semarang as a regional identity of Semarang, by conducting a preservation program of Batik Semarang. This research’s objective is to identify and analyze the business performance of Batik craftsmen or batik maker in Semarang focused on the study on production, distribution, and market aspects. The fact arose is the decreasing number of Batik craftsmen year by year. The research was conducted by using the survey method on 17 batik craftsman in Semarang city. The Analysis of Batik Semarang’s Business Performance uses SCP approach which covers market structure analysis, conduct analysis, and performance analysis. The industry level market is moderately concentrated over the study indicated by the CR4 75% and HHI 1889. The result of market structure analysis suggest an oligopolistic market structure. Performance analysis involves the elements of price conduct, product conduct, and market conduct. Price conduct shows that 76 % of respondents act as the price maker. Product conduct shows that 70 % of respondents have chosen to do product diversification. Market conduct shows that 56 percent of producers sell the products directly to the consumers.. Performance analysis is viewed from the element of Batik business profitability, which shows the average R/C ratio of 1.72 and the average ROA of 0.51. This indicates that Batik Semarang business is still profitable.

Abstract:
A detailed review of existing literature on the structure-conduct-performance (SCP) relationship indicates that the empirical divergence between SCP and competing hypothesis is still not conclusive which is attracting many research works across the world, and recently in Africa. Studies on SCP are dominated by quantitative analysis with exclusion of non-quantifiable variables such as related to conduct and/or those lack data (regulation). The majority of studies employ a multiple linear regression model where a measure of bank performance (mostly profit) is regressed on market concentration variables (such as k-firm, Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, etc.) along with some control variables. Studies that used the structure model have limited focus on other key variables like regulation, macroeconomic, and industry factors. They have also applied a quantitative approach and assumed conduct as being a derivative of the market structure. Hence, there was no attempt to explore the behavior of banks within the given structure, banking, and macro environment. Few studies have explicitly considered Ethiopia’s banking performance using the structural approach (SCP or ESH). Nevertheless, the existing bank performance studies were not analyzed incorporating big banks in the industry, with long period observation of banks, using parametric and non-parametric methods, which are scarce in the Ethiopian context.

Abstract:
Indonesian Banking Architecture Policies (API) since 2004 has resulted in the rising of banks concentration. This increase of banks concentration raises two opposing hypotheses,structure-conduct- performance (SCP) and efficient-performance hypothesis. SCP approach is a structural approach. This approach considers that the level of profits which the bank acquired is affected by the market structure and the degree of competition. The decreasing level of competition and the increasing in concentration in an industry will lead to increased profits for these industries. This study aims to prove, whether banks in Indonesia in 2009-2013 supportstructure-conduct-performanceor efficient-performance hypotheses. The sampling method used was purposive sampling. Using banks’ financial statement data sourced fromBank Indonesia, which then analyzed with panel data regression in e-views 8 program. It’s found that banks in Indonesia support the efficient hypothesis. However, the banks efficiency has yet encourage low interest practice and thus reducing the competitiveness of the Indonesian economy in the face ofASEAN Community 2015.

Eliasson, Nina, and Evelina Karlsson. "Traditionella taxiföretag och innovativa substitut : En analys av den teknologiska utvecklingens betydelse för taximarknaden." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Nationalekonomi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-158188.

Full text
Abstract:
The taxi market has been, and is, undergoing a transformation. As a result of the technological development, new companies and substitutes have been established on the market. Uber, Bzzt and Lime are only three of all the new companies that have emerged in the recent years, and not only contribute with new, innovative substitutes for traditional taxi, but also increased competition in terms of accessibility through digital platforms. Purpose: The purpose of the essay is to analyze the influence of the technological development on the taxi market’s structure and function, with focus on Stockholm. Completion: The main framework of the essay is the Structure-Conduct-Performance model. For a more profound analysis three interviews were conducted with: Bzzt, Svenska Taxiförbundet and Taxi Stockholm. The essay also includes a study of the price level and a study of the accessibility to a taxi. The included companies are: Sverigetaxi, TaxiKurir, Taxi Stockholm, TOPCAB and Uber. Conclusions: The technological development have a large impact on the structure and function of the taxi market, since it contributes to a more customer-centered and efficient market. The market structure in Stockholm is similar to a hybrid market of an oligopoly and perfect competition, depending on the difference in size of the existing companies. The market has a uniform price level and a good accessibility, of which the latest has improved as a result of the development of the taxi companies own applications.

Stuible, Shirley L. "The efficiency of the B.C. apple marketing system : a structure, conduct and performance evaluation." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28404.

Full text
Abstract:
The cooperative structure of the B.C. apple marketing system has been in danger of collapse several times over its 70 year history. The most recent upheaval occurred in the early 1980s, when accusations of cost inefficiencies led to several changes in the system. The objective of this study is to provide a structure, conduct and performance evaluation of efficiency of the apple marketing system. This will entail an historical review, a description of the apple industry and an evaluation of its performance with respect to cost efficiency and revenue maximization using the Washington State apple industry as the benchmark. Apple production in Washington State is about ten times production in B.C., and their typical orchard is about 40 acres versus about 14 acres in B.C. The average Washington packinghouse organization serves about 30 growers to B.C.'s 300, yet their average volume is about 40% larger than the average B.C. packinghouse. Approximately one half of all the Washington packinghouses are cooperatives, whereas nearly all the B.C. packinghouses are cooperatives. Also, the B.C. growers collectively own the central marketing agency and a major processor. The Washington State packinghouses tend to market their own fruit. The performance of the apple marketing industry is evaluated in terms of revenues, costs and return to growers. The data available from Washington State precludes direct comparisons of prices (and hence revenues). Total and average costs curves are derived for both the packing and marketing functions in the B.C. industry, and these all exhibit the expected shapes. Variable and fixed costs are also broken out and examined, although it appears the fixed cost data includes some variable costs. But the most interesting finding occurs when B.C. and Washington State per unit costs are compared - it appears the postulated size advantages for Washington State do not exist on average, since B.C. costs are lower. Roughly speaking, it costs about $5/box to pack a box in B.C. versus about $6/box in Washington. Marketing costs in both regions are under $1/box. Returns to the grower, however, are about $3/box in B.C. versus about $5/box in Washington State. This suggests that price or revenue obtained in B.C. is much lower. This could be due to two diferent factors. First, the marketers in B.C. may be too volume oriented at the expense of obtaining the maximum price possible. This study makes no attempt to test this possibility. The second reason for B.C.'s lower prices is that the average B.C. product is deemed inferior to Washington State apples. Sensitivity tests are performed to evaluate the effect on grower returns of improving the average apple. When Washington State's average apple quality is imposed on the B.C. cost and price structure, grower returns increase by 63% and 9% for the two years tested. This suggests that if B.C. could match the Washington State performance, its growers would benefit significantly. When the B.C. product mix is varied to include ten percent more long storage fruit, less small sized fruit, and more high grade fruit, the grower returns increase by under 1%, 5 to 12%, and 2 to 3%, respectively. In other words, improving the fruit size of B.C. apples appears to be the most effective means of improving grower returns in B.C.<br>Land and Food Systems, Faculty of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
The merger provisions of the Competition Act proclaimed on June 19, 1986 are similar in with section 7 of the Clayton Act and the decisions of U.S. Courts in antitrust merger cases. In the U.S. and Canada a merger may be enjoined only if it is likely to lessen competition substantially. Subsection 92(2) and section 93 of the Competition Act supply a list of factors that may be used in the assessment of the probable impact on competition that a merger could have. The author discusses the meaning of subsection 92(2) of the Competition Act and the relevance of the "structure-conduct-performance paradigm" to horizontal merger analysis in the Canadian context.<br>The author proceeds to a comparative analysis of the U.S. and Canadian antitrust regimes. The meaning of subsection 92(2) remains unsettled since the Competition Tribunal has not yet made a decision on the merits in a contested merger. The interpretation of subsection 92(2) suggested differs from that of the Director of Investigation and Research (Bureau of Competition Policy) and most antitrust commentators in Canada. Abstract:
Competition policy is meant to ensure a level-playing in the market, but its ultimate goal is to enhance consumer interests. The telecommunications sector is one of the two sectors that have set up a competition policy in Hong Kong. This paper examines the current competition policy framework in the telecommunications sector by analyzing the level of consumer protection using the Structure-Conduct-Performance Paradigm. It examines in detail the consumer related complaint cases received by the Office of the Telecommunications Authority in four markets: fixed line telephone services, mobile phone services, International Direct Dialing services, and Internet services. Regression analysis results reveal that more competition in a market has a positive and significant effect on the frequency of complaints about misleading or deceptive conduct on the part of operators in the period from 1999 to 2006. Also, smaller and newer operators tend to receive more complaints. From the lessons we have drawn from the telecommunications sector, a more comprehensive policy coped with consumer protection regulation is needed in order to better promote consumer interests in Hong Kong.

Abstract:
Abstract Our research has two directions: 1) experimental determination of the relationships between chemistry, microstructure and corrosion behavior and 2) computational design of new alloys based on the experimentally established relationships. A variety of aluminum based sacrificial anode chemistries (binary, ternary and quaternary alloys) were prepared using high purity materials at the Kroehling Advanced Materials Foundry at Virginia Tech and their electrochemical performance characterized using laboratory tests. As a result of this study, numerous, new anode chemistries that meet the current performance requirements for low voltage, aluminum, sacrificial anodes specified by MIL-DTL-24779C(SH) 20131 have been developed using a novel “three element” approach. The new chemistries are composed of a base metal element (Al), one or more active elements (Bi, Ga, In, Zn) and a voltage control element (Cu, Ge, Si). This research expands the understanding of the effects of alloy chemistry, heat treatment and microstructure on sacrificial anode performance. Sacrificial anodes have been used on ships and marine structures for quite some time but these materials must be developed by trial and error since there is no materials theory that can be used for computational materials design. Typically, Zn, Mg or Al-Zn-In alloy anodes have been used, however, the electronegativity of these alloys can promote stress corrosion cracking (SCC) or hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of high strength steels.2 Pautasso determined that reducing the potential of the system to a range between -0.730 VSCE and -0.850 VSCE significantly reduced the amount of hydrogen liberated by the cathodic reaction thereby reducing the likelihood of SCC and/or HE. As a result of their work, an Al-0.1 wt% Ga anode was developed and large-scale experiments conducted by the U.S Navy confirmed that this low-voltage Al-Ga anode was a suitable option for cathodic protection of high strength steels.3 Our research has developed a new, novel approach to developing aluminum, sacrificial anode chemistries.

Abstract:
Abstract The construction of a port expansion project in Arabian Gulf for a major operator included the surfacebased structures such as capping beams and reinforced concrete piles. In 2009, a criticality assessment study was conducted that established the requirement of an impressed current cathodic protection system for all piles included in offshore structure. The installed CP system was operational since August 2011 and was remotely monitored. The monitoring data showed that all the surface-based structures such as capping beams adhered to the requirements of BS EN 12696 with regards to polarization and depolarization. However, the reinforced concrete piles showed an initial negative polarization followed by steady state condition. Thereafter, the polarization project requirements were not achieved. Later in 2014, it was requested by the Operator and the Contractor to conduct a diagnostic investigation of the CP system and review the requirement for cathodic protection for the piles. This paper presents the review of impressed current cathodic protection system data, reports, adopted methodology, analysis, results interpretation and key findings.

Abstract:
Abstract Thermally sprayed zinc coatings and aluminum coatings have proven to be capable of providing long-term, cost-effective corrosion protection to steel structures in marine environments. Aluminum coatings have the advantage of passive film formation, but have limited sacrificial protection capabilities. Zinc coatings have the advantage of electrochemical activity which enables them to provide effective cathodic protection to steel. However, this high electrochemical activity results in high corrosion rates and a rapid depletion of the coating material. The possibility of developing a zinc-aluminum coating which combines the advantages of both materials has been the subject of several investigations. Evaluations have been conducted on: layered coatings, powdered alloy coatings, prealloyed wire coatings and pseudo alloy (from co-jointly sprayed pure wires) coatings. Much controversy exists over the merits of each combination. The objective of this research was to evaluate the corrosion behavior of a zinc-15% aluminum prealloyed wire coating and a zinc-aluminum pseudo alloy coating of approximately the same zinc-aluminum composition. The evaluation consisted of corrosion field exposures, electrochemical laboratory testing and coating characterization utilizing optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction. After six months of atmospheric and splash and spray exposure, the zinc-aluminum pseudo alloy coatings were found to provide the best overall corrosion performance. Serious attack of the zinc-15% aluminum prealloyed wire coating along the oxide layers was noted after six months immersion in seawater. The corrosion resistance of thermally sprayed aluminum coatings was found to be due to the presence of a passive oxide/hydroxide film which is stable in the region from Ecorr approximately -550mv (vs SCE). Zinc-aluminum or aluminum-zinc alloy coatings appear to be capable of combining the long-term protection of aluminum and the cathodic protection capabilities of zinc. However, in order to accomplish this, an alloy with a more coherent aluminum rich phase than the zinc-15% aluminum prealloyed wire and a more even distribution of phases than the pseudo alloy coating is needed.

Abstract:
We evaluate the decentralized structure of the Federal Reserve System as a mechanism for generating and processing new ideas on banking policy in the 1950s and 1960s. We document that demand for research and analysis was driven by banking industry developments and legal changes that required the Federal Reserve and other banking regulatory agencies to develop guidelines for bank mergers. In response to these developments, the Board and the Reserve Banks hired industrial organization economists and young economists out of graduate school who brought in the leading theory of industrial organization at the time, which was the structure, conduct, and performance (SCP) paradigm. This flow of ideas into the Federal Reserve from academia paralleled the flow that was going on in monetary policy and macroeconomics at the time and contributed to the increased professionalization of research at the Federal Reserve. We document how several Reserve Banks, particularly Boston and Chicago, innovated by creating dissertation support programs, collecting specialized data, and creating the Bank Structure Conference, which became the clearinghouse for academic work on bank structure and later for bank risk and financial stability. We interpret these examples as illustrating an advantage that a decentralized central bank has in the production of knowledge.

Abstract:
Steel elements working in a harsh environment can be exposed to corrosion that degrades their performance and threatens the integrity of the whole structure. Recent studies propose using carbon (CFRP) and basalt (BFRP) fiber–reinforced polymers to repair corroded steel cross sections; however, most of these studies have not explored many of the structural characteristics, including ductility. In this study, we conduct a series of full-scale experimental tests to investigate the impact of corrosion, represented as mechanical section reduction, on steel beams as well as the impact of repairing the beams using CFRP and BFRP in enhancing the beams’ structural performance. Mechanical section reduction, introduced to the flange and web elements, is used to establish a baseline dataset that captures the impact of repairs in the absence of corrosion. Four-point bending loading conditions are utilized for all tested beams. The results show that the reduction of the flange and web section lowers the beams’ yielding load by 10% and 8%, respectively, compared with a beam with a full cross section. Utilizing CFRP and BFRP patches can partially restore the corroded beams’ ductility; however, the BFRP is outperforming the CFRP in improving their ultimate strength by 10% and enhancing their ductility by 10%.

WIND RESISTANCE PERFORMANCE AND REINFORCEMENT MEASURES OF STANDING SEAM METAL ROOFS BASED ON WIND TUNNEL TESTS. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2025. https://doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2025.21.1.1.

Full text
Abstract:
As an important building envelope structure, metal roofs have been widely used in various large-scale buildings because of their unique advantages such as beautiful shape, lightweight nature, flexibility, and exceptional strength. However, there are still some gaps in the existing research on the wind resistance performance of metal roof systems, which poses a serious threat to life and property. To address this gap, this paper conducted wind tunnel tests of long-span standing seam metal roofs. The basic wind pressure of 0.95 kN/m2, which is once every 100 years. The wind-induced response of the metal roofs under varying wind speeds and wind directions was simulated by the wind tunnel tests, which involved the measurement and analysis of the load distribution characteristics, equivalent wind loads, and wind vibration coefficients. The experimental results were used to determine the design wind load for the metal roofing structure and to conduct the wind vibration calculations. The results indicated that in regions experiencing high negative wind pressure, the results obtained from extreme value analysis marginally exceeded those obtained through the peak factor method. The stress characteristics and instability modes of metal roofs in strong wind environments were summarized, and the factors affecting the wind resistance performance of metal roofs were analyzed. The reinforcement measures for wind resistance design of metal roofs were proposed, it serves as a theoretical guide and scientific foundation for the future development of similar metal roof structures.

NUMERICAL SIMULATION ANALYSIS OF TEMPERATURE FIELD OF BOX-TYPE COMPOSITE WALL. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/icass2020.p.321.

Full text
Abstract:
The spatial and temporal characteristics of the internal temperature field of the box-type composite wall have great significance to high temperature mechanical response and fire resistance performance of composite wall subjected to fire. A series of assumptions for the simplified model were made after determining the influence of various thermal parameters, the boundary conditions of surface and the contact conditions. And the finite element software(ABAQUS) was used to establish the temperature field analysis model to conduct nonlinear transient temperature response analysis, then the validity of the model was verified by relevant test results. On this basis, the distribution of temperature field during the whole process and its key measuring points under fire are analyzed, and the parameters of each component are researched. The results show that the thickness of rock wool, the type, the thickness and number of layers of cladding plates have obvious influence on the temperature field distribution inside the composite wall, and other factors have little effect. According to the analysis results, the fire-resistant design idea of the composite wall and the temperature prediction formulas of the key temperature-control point are proposed, which provide the basis for the application of the boxtype steel structure system.
