Stuible, Shirley L. "The efficiency of the B.C. apple marketing system : a structure, conduct and performance evaluation." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28404.

Full text
Abstract:
The cooperative structure of the B.C. apple marketing system has been in danger of collapse several times over its 70 year history. The most recent upheaval occurred in the early 1980s, when accusations of cost inefficiencies led to several changes in the system. The objective of this study is to provide a structure, conduct and performance evaluation of efficiency of the apple marketing system. This will entail an historical review, a description of the apple industry and an evaluation of its performance with respect to cost efficiency and revenue maximization using the Washington State apple industry as the benchmark. Apple production in Washington State is about ten times production in B.C., and their typical orchard is about 40 acres versus about 14 acres in B.C. The average Washington packinghouse organization serves about 30 growers to B.C.'s 300, yet their average volume is about 40% larger than the average B.C. packinghouse. Approximately one half of all the Washington packinghouses are cooperatives, whereas nearly all the B.C. packinghouses are cooperatives. Also, the B.C. growers collectively own the central marketing agency and a major processor. The Washington State packinghouses tend to market their own fruit. The performance of the apple marketing industry is evaluated in terms of revenues, costs and return to growers. The data available from Washington State precludes direct comparisons of prices (and hence revenues). Total and average costs curves are derived for both the packing and marketing functions in the B.C. industry, and these all exhibit the expected shapes. Variable and fixed costs are also broken out and examined, although it appears the fixed cost data includes some variable costs. But the most interesting finding occurs when B.C. and Washington State per unit costs are compared - it appears the postulated size advantages for Washington State do not exist on average, since B.C. costs are lower. Roughly speaking, it costs about $5/box to pack a box in B.C. versus about $6/box in Washington. Marketing costs in both regions are under $1/box. Returns to the grower, however, are about $3/box in B.C. versus about $5/box in Washington State. This suggests that price or revenue obtained in B.C. is much lower. This could be due to two diferent factors. First, the marketers in B.C. may be too volume oriented at the expense of obtaining the maximum price possible. This study makes no attempt to test this possibility. The second reason for B.C.'s lower prices is that the average B.C. product is deemed inferior to Washington State apples. Sensitivity tests are performed to evaluate the effect on grower returns of improving the average apple. When Washington State's average apple quality is imposed on the B.C. cost and price structure, grower returns increase by 63% and 9% for the two years tested. This suggests that if B.C. could match the Washington State performance, its growers would benefit significantly. When the B.C. product mix is varied to include ten percent more long storage fruit, less small sized fruit, and more high grade fruit, the grower returns increase by under 1%, 5 to 12%, and 2 to 3%, respectively. In other words, improving the fruit size of B.C. apples appears to be the most effective means of improving grower returns in B.C.

Abstract:
The merger provisions of the Competition Act proclaimed on June 19, 1986 are similar in with section 7 of the Clayton Act and the decisions of U.S. Courts in antitrust merger cases. In the U.S. and Canada a merger may be enjoined only if it is likely to lessen competition substantially. Subsection 92(2) and section 93 of the Competition Act supply a list of factors that may be used in the assessment of the probable impact on competition that a merger could have. The author discusses the meaning of subsection 92(2) of the Competition Act and the relevance of the "structure-conduct-performance paradigm" to horizontal merger analysis in the Canadian context.
The author proceeds to a comparative analysis of the U.S. and Canadian antitrust regimes. The meaning of subsection 92(2) remains unsettled since the Competition Tribunal has not yet made a decision on the merits in a contested merger. The interpretation of subsection 92(2) suggested differs from that of the Director of Investigation and Research (Bureau of Competition Policy) and most antitrust commentators in Canada. CHEUNG, Ching Yi Cherry. "Consumer protection in the Hong Kong telecommunications sector : implications for competition policy." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2007. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/econ_etd/12.

Full text
Abstract:
Competition policy is meant to ensure a level-playing in the market, but its ultimate goal is to enhance consumer interests. The telecommunications sector is one of the two sectors that have set up a competition policy in Hong Kong. This paper examines the current competition policy framework in the telecommunications sector by analyzing the level of consumer protection using the Structure-Conduct-Performance Paradigm. It examines in detail the consumer related complaint cases received by the Office of the Telecommunications Authority in four markets: fixed line telephone services, mobile phone services, International Direct Dialing services, and Internet services. Regression analysis results reveal that more competition in a market has a positive and significant effect on the frequency of complaints about misleading or deceptive conduct on the part of operators in the period from 1999 to 2006. Also, smaller and newer operators tend to receive more complaints. From the lessons we have drawn from the telecommunications sector, a more comprehensive policy coped with consumer protection regulation is needed in order to better promote consumer interests in Hong Kong.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The taxi market has been, and is, undergoing a transformation. As a result of the technological development, new companies and substitutes have been established on the market. Uber, Bzzt and Lime are only three of all the new companies that have emerged in the recent years, and not only contribute with new, innovative substitutes for traditional taxi, but also increased competition in terms of accessibility through digital platforms. Purpose: The purpose of the essay is to analyze the influence of the technological development on the taxi market’s structure and function, with focus on Stockholm. Completion: The main framework of the essay is the Structure-Conduct-Performance model. For a more profound analysis three interviews were conducted with: Bzzt, Svenska Taxiförbundet and Taxi Stockholm. The essay also includes a study of the price level and a study of the accessibility to a taxi. The included companies are: Sverigetaxi, TaxiKurir, Taxi Stockholm, TOPCAB and Uber. Conclusions: The technological development have a large impact on the structure and function of the taxi market, since it contributes to a more customer-centered and efficient market. The market structure in Stockholm is similar to a hybrid market of an oligopoly and perfect competition, depending on the difference in size of the existing companies. The market has a uniform price level and a good accessibility, of which the latest has improved as a result of the development of the taxi companies own applications.

Hellowell, Mark Stephen. "Fair return for risk? : an examination of structure, competition and profitability in the market for private finance in the National Health Service." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/7895.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1993, the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) has been the dominant form of large-scale infrastructure procurement used by National Health Service (NHS) organisations in the United Kingdom. As of April 2011, 123 PFI projects for new hospital facilities had been agreed between NHS organisations and private sector consortia, representing privately financed investment of £15.9 billion (in 2010 prices), and a projected long-term cost to the NHS of £70.5 billion. Eight additional hospital PFI schemes were being procured or prepared for tender as of April 2011, with an estimated capital investment value of £2 billion. Despite the financial significance of PFI projects to the NHS, the literature has not assessed whether, or the extent to which, the returns expected by investors are excessive. This gap in the evidence base is highly problematic. The presence of excess returns to investors will have an impact on the cost efficiency and affordability of PFI projects, and consequently the financial sustainability of the NHS organisations that pay for them. This thesis evaluates the returns that investors in NHS-commissioned PFI projects expect to earn with reference to the scale of risk being borne by these investors, and explores the sources of the identified excess via an examination of the structure and competitiveness of the PFI financing markets. The study therefore comprises two substantial empirical components. The first draws on the financial models of 11 NHS PFI projects to describe and evaluate the return to investors. Cost of capital benchmarks, constructed on the basis of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, are used as comparators to assess the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) for the 11 projects, and as discount rates to calculate Benefit-Cost Ratios. Both measures agree on the presence of significant excess returns for investors on each project – with large “spreads” between the IRRs and the corresponding cost of capital benchmarks, and high Benefit-Cost Ratio scores. The second empirical component provides an analysis of the structure and competitiveness of the market for private finance. Two indicators of this market’s structure – concentration and entry/exit rates – in addition to the dynamics of the procurement process are the focus of measurement and evaluation. It is demonstrated that: (a) the market for private finance in this sector is an oligopoly, (b) market share is highly concentrated when assessed against UK regulatory standards, and (c) churn and market penetration rates are extremely low. Constraints on the competitiveness of the market are identified as: (i) the low number of bidders; and (ii) the extensive period of non-competitive bidding in the final phase of the procurement process, in which the output specifications of projects are materially altered. The thesis concludes that recent reforms to the procurement process have been ineffective, and the problems underpinning a lack of competitive pressure in procurement may be insuperable, given the inherent complexity of this form of investment and the need to secure external financing. For the NHS, this source of cost inefficiency implies substantial opportunity costs (i.e. foregone opportunities for additional capital investment) and excess costs (i.e. a higher than necessary burden on the revenue budget). A stronger regulatory regime, incorporating regulation of the profitability of PFI projects for investors, is required to minimise the threat posed by this policy to the financial sustainability of the NHS.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the recent past the industrialised world bore witness to staggering growth in the secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy. In the face of this growth process economic theory had to confront new challenges in explaining and interpreting economic phenomena. The complex nature of inter- and intra-firm relationships forced a pragmatic stance on policy makers to ensure that all actions are efficient and competitive. Two prominent schools of thought with contradictory viewpoints emerged. The Structuralists built upon the foundations laid by Bain (1951) and Mason (1939). This implied a theoretical framework, namely the Structure, Conduct and Perofrmance paradigm (SCP paradigm) that could be used to explain inter- and intra-firm relations according to a simple forward causality argument. The Structuralists' interpretation of the SCP paradigm provides strong support for the implementation of deconcentration measures by competition authorities. The Chicago School, however, developed a counter-argument inspired by Demsetz's (1973) efficiency hypothesis. According to them, causality is reversed and deconcentration measures are used at the expense of the most efficient firms. The thesis aims to study these contradictory arguments as well as their evolution in South Africa. Various researchers in South Africa have built on the arguments of the Structuralists and the Chicagoans regarding the manufacturing sector. The theoretical methods implemented by them will be applied to the long-term insurance industry to assess the validity of the SCP paradigm as a theoretical framework for the application of competition policy.

This study aims to understand the evolution of the Information Technology sector in Portugal due to the market structure and conduct of business. One of the most used models is the Paradigm Tricotomic, known by Structure - Conduct - Performance Paradigm. To respond to goal, were used panel data models, using a sample of 611 companies in the Information Technology sector in Portugal, extracted from the SABI (System of Analysis Iberian Balances) database. The dependent variables considered to measure the performance were the return on assets (ROA), the return on equity (ROE), the return on sales (ROS) and the apparent labor productivity (PAT), which were also tested to explain their own performance. As possible variables of the market structure we considered the size of the company and the market share. As variables of the company's conduct we analyzed the nature of the tangible / intangible assets, the expenditure on investigation and development and the advertising expenditure. The results show that the performance variables can also be explained by other performance variables; the company size has a positive and statistically significant relationship with the ROA; the relationship between asset tangibility and the ROS is negative; the variable advertising expenditure has a positive impact in ROS.

Energy is considered the engine of socio-economic development of industrial society. It is present in all stages of production. Thus, the constant threat of lack of energy makes the projection of development policies impracticable. Brazil is a country that tries to be inserted in the global economy and it cannot lose competitiveness because of lack of available energy. It is a country with a vast territorial extensions and a favorable climate to the production of different types of renewable fuel sources, especially the biodiesel, which strengthens the agribusiness by creating a new market for oleaginous plants, and reduces dependence on petroleum derivatives. The objective of this research is to evaluate the productive chain of biodiesel, in the state of the Rio Grande do Sul, located in Southern Region of Brazil, it is located among the main producing states. The research was based on the model structureconduct-performance (SCP), taking in consideration the transactions that occur between suppliers of raw materials and producers, and still the peculiarities of the agro-industrial systems in an environment subject to the external shocks. To allow one better understanding of the information collected during field research, the tool of modeling of information Integration Definition Language 0 (IDEF0) was used, it serves as the base to structure the analyzed environment. The results showed that the production of biodiesel is characterized as incipient and strong due to the actions of the federal government, what generates a series of market imperfections that, consequently, generate the productive inefficiency for sector. Its demand totally based on sales through public auctions, with few buyers. The crucial variables of dispute in the market are price and product quality (adequacy to the specifications). There are very expectations on the opening of the exportation market, as well as the release of the commercialization of the production really competitive levels and conditions. The main strain for the new firms is the raw material attainment in amount and the determined specifications to keep the quality of the final product. It became clear that despite the high competitiveness of the sector, in proportion to the limited market, there is certain level of cooperation and exchange of information among the organizations, mainly when it deals with a common problem to the sector as a whole. The cooperation is narrower and of active form among the firms and suppliers of raw material, that is justified by the necessity to guarantee the amount and the quality of materials programmed. For this, there are technical aid programs of incentive to alternative cultures, making an effort to diversify the productive matrix.

Abstract:
World’s increasing concern regarding forest resources management has pressured the producers and industries connected to forestry activities. In face of the difficulty to differentiate agents’ productive patterns of behavior towards forests, the use of sustainable forest management certifications is becoming increasingly relevant, working as a supposedly market valued signaling device. This scenario represents empirically in a specific agroindustrial environment the theories developed in Information Economics, presenting signal emission tools as potential reducers of commercial information asymmetry. However, questions regarding how the use of these certifications and the consequent improvement of information availability impact on firms which adopt this strategy remain. Relating this situation with the elements of Industrial Economics (more specifically the Structure-Conduct-Performance approach) and defining the signaling behavior as a Conduct pattern, this research proposes an analysis of the possible impacts of this strategy in the resulting Performance. As object of study, the Brazilian Pulp & Paper (P&P) industry is chosen, given its economic importance for the country’s forest and agribusiness sectors. The methodology to develop this verification is based on econometric regression models, aiming to establish and measures influences between the sustainable forest management certifications implementation evolution in the aggregated exporting performance of the Brazilian P&P industry for the period 1995-2008 (monthly data), since the international trade is expected to rise the levels of information asymmetry and hence the value of signals. Results allow partial acceptance of the hypothesis that the use of certifications has positive influences on Brazilian P&P industry’s international trade performance.

Abstract:
Uruguayan dry land cropping has quadrupled in the last decade as a result of important increases in commodities prices, the growth in soybean cropping, and the fast consolidation of grain production enterprise models. The actions of the most important agricultural companies have modified the sector’s reality, increasing the land concentration and relocating other activities. New regions began being used for cropping and the increase in demand for land to lease resulted in higher rental values and more difficulty of access to this resource. Using the Structure-Conduct-Performance paradigm of the Industrial Organization as a theoretical reference, the research was carried out with the aim of identifying and analyzing how enterprise conduct variables affected the results, therefore consolidating the agricultural expansion process in Uruguay. Expert interviews were carried out, with the aim of identifying the companies to be later analyzed. Six of them reported their strategies and results in the period between 2004/05 and 2008/09. Data processing and analysis were undertaken through the descriptive statistic study, correlations matrices and through the construction of panel data regression models. This was developed with the aim of identifying enterprise conduct variables which explained the area and productive expansions, apart from productivity variations and net margins per hectare. Models were evaluated in three sub-groups of variables; those that belonged to the whole company and the ones related to wheat or soybean production. Results indicate that an increase in territorial diversification of production areas in the different Uruguayan regions, and the proportion of leased land had a statistically significant and positive effect on area and production expansion, which indicates the significance of these two strategies in the companies’ results. Although land leasing allowed an increase in production and area, it had a negative effect on the soybean productivity. This situation reaffirms the need to develop more efficient production processes, by improving relationships with land owners, a fact that was rated as highly relevant by the companies. Through this research, it can be conclude that the continuity of agricultural expansion will take place through production-process improvements, rather than through significant increases in the cropping areas.

Lama, Albarracin Dante Luis. "Impacto de la concentración bancaria en el margen de intermediación financiera en Perú." Bachelor's thesis, Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC), 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10757/653591.

Abstract:
The impact of banking concentration on financial intermediation spread has been a widely researched topic over the world; however, this has not been the case for Peru. This research analyses the relationship between these two variables. For this, a theoretical framework is presented with the evolution of the Peruvian financial and banking system in addition to the presentation of previous literature and the theoretical model to be used. It is hypothesized that there is a positive and significant relationship between the margin and the concentration, thus fulfilling the Structure-Conduct Performance Paradigm proposed by Bain (1951) and not the Efficiency-Structure Hypothesis proposed by Demsetz (1973) and Peltzman (1977). After the econometric estimation, using Fixed Effects and Feasible Generalized Least Squares, a significant negative relationship is found between the variables studied, as well as the importance of other variables typical of banks and macroeconomic variables. The positive relationship found between operating efficiency and financial intermediation margin is important, as it is argued through the study of the Efficiency Hypothesis. Finally, the importance of the supervision of banks by the regulatory institution (SBS) and the incentive for free and fair competition within the financial system are discussed.

It becomes more popular and development in computer networking industry in the recent years because of the increase of Internet explorers. The reason for this fact is that people use Internet very frequently. Internet has become more necessary and valuable in our life. Meanwhile, wirelesslan products have increased singficantly communication speed and leaded to prices droped quickly. Therefore, Wirelesslan has inteaded Lan. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the current development of Wireless Networking Industry applying the Structure-Conduct-Performance(S-C-P) theory developed by Mason-Bain to investigate the market structure, firm behaviors and performances. The study uses Two-Firm Concentration Ratio (CR2) and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) as indexis to measure the concentration of the market. The study also evaluates the fluctuation of performances of firms using performance evaluation indexis from financial viewpoint to understand the operational status of the industry. The results indicate that (1) The Wireless industry is a middle highly concentrated market. (2) The firms are OEM export-oriented and have strong research and develop abilities, therefore, they can afford the competitive prices to competite with those of developed countries. (3) Although firms had the high growth in revenues, their operational efficiency has not improved. (4) The only some of big firms leads the Wirelesslan market and the rest of firms may exit the market in the future.

The model of “Structure-Conduct-Performance” by Mason-Bain is applied to the Taiwan bank industry. I use the three Stage Least Square approach to estimate the model and the findings are as follows: First, the market share had a significantly positive effect on the diversification strategy, while market concentration had a significantly negative effect. Second, diversification, loan rate, the number of branch offices and market concentration had significantly positive effects on profits. Market share, capital adequacy and loan to deposits ratio had significantly negative effects on profits. Finally, there were several feedback effects. Profit had a significantly positive effect on market share. Diversification resulted in significantly negative effect on market share. Profits yield a significantly positive effect on diversification.

In this thesis, we use the model of “Structure- Conduct- Performance” to study how market share, diversification and profit margin of the DRAM industry are related to each other, and to find the key factors which impact them most. For this purpose, the data for 40 seasons during the past 10 years, 2004-2013, for 9 DRAM industries are analyzed using a three-stage least square approach. Our study shows that from 2004 to 2013, the influence of market share of the global DRAM industry on diversification and profit margin are both positive. However, it appears as a negative correlation between diversification and profit margin. In fact, 2008, the year of the global financial crisis, is the turning point. That’s the time when the correlation between diversification and profit margin changes from positive to negative. Otherwise, the relationships among these three factors are roughly the same before or after 2008. In conclusion, we suggest that vendors can expand their market share and keep annual sales increased in response to the true demand in the market; diversification and capital intensity must be carefully assessed. And vendors should carefully evaluate any R & D investment plan according to the rapid demand in the market.

Abstract As the government has implemented a series of liberalization measures, the life insurance market in Taiwan has been transformed from completely closed market to one open to competition. The object of this paper, based on the theory of “Structure-Conduct-Performance” by Mason-Bain, is to probe the interactive relationships among the structure, conduct, and performance of Taiwan life insurance industry. And to examine the factors which influence the market structure and market performance of Taiwan life insurance industry. Further develop the adoptive strategies for the life insurance industry facing the changing industry. This work picks 28 firms in Taiwan life insurance industry as empirical sample. The sampling period is from 1982 to 2000. The three Stage Least Square approach was used to estimate the above model. The empirical results show that the market share of premium had a significantly positive effect on profit. The major benefit of the insurance firm was decided by the market share. And other factors such as barrier entry, the numbers of branch office and agent all had significantly positive effects on the market share. The results of the market performance regression equation, show that the firms with higher profit would have a higher market share too. The investment return ratio and the establishment years of the firm had a significantly positive effect on profit. And the grow ratio of the new contacts, the amounts of reserve and expense ratio had significantly negative effects on profit.

In this study, a structure-conduct-performance model is used to analyze market structure, competitive behaviors of firms and performance of firms in the notebook industry of Taiwan. Panel Data regression model with industry analysis and the financial statements analysis are analyzed. Comparisons in firms’ competitive practices are discussed in deep. In this study, the market structure variables include market share rate, capital intensity, and sales growth rate. Firm’s conduct variables include R & D intensity, investment intensity, vertical integration and debt ratio. Return of shareholders' equity (ROE) is defined as a measure of operating performance. The results show that (1) vertical integration, investment intensity and debt ratio have significantly negative impacts on ROE, (2) capital intensity and market share rate have significantly positive impacts on ROE, and (3) sales growth rate and R & D intensity have no significantly impacts on ROE. The implications of this study suggest that firms should increase R & D outlay and be more innovative and effective brand management capabilities in order to enhance their competitiveness. In addition, firms have to develop diversified new products to maintain their competitive edge in facing their operating risk. Abstract This study adopts industry economics regarding the theory of “Structure-Conduct-Performance” as major analysis structure to explore the relationship among the market structure of electronic wires industry, manufacturers’ conduct and ROA (Return on Assets) in Taiwan. This study selects 17 electronic wires manufacturers who have listed/emerged in TSEC and OTC as samples, with the mixed information of time series and cross-section from year 2000 to year 2008, and adopts the OLS (Ordinary Least-Squares Regression) of single-equation regression to carry out the analysis. The result from mutual proof of organizational theory and practices of the industry will be as references provided for research institutes or the proprietors of industry. The findings in this study show that in terms of the relationship between the basic conditions and performance of the industry, the promotion of revenue growth for electronic wires industry has positive influence on performance, and the floating internationally copper price shows obvious influence on performance. However, in researching the relationship between the market structure and Performance, it is found that the market share promotion of electronic wires industry has positive influence on performance, however, debt ratio and manufacturer scale show negative influence on performance. Finally, in researching the relationship between manufacturer’s conduct and performance, it is found that the current marketing density of entire electronic wires industry shows negative influence on performance, however, the R&D density influences performance less. In addition, there is no obvious influence of the degree of product diversification and the share of investment to mainland China on performance.

This study investigates the degree of Taiwan’s auditor concentration and changes in market structures for the public accounting profession during a long-term period. In order to acquire a clear knowledge of influences of market structures and accounting firms’ conduct on the performance, the structure-conduct-performance (SCP) paradigm is used. Empirical data are obtained from the 1992-2003 Survey Report of Public Accounting Firms in Taiwan, published by the Financial Supervisory Commission, Executive Yuan, Taiwan, the Republic of China. Main findings are as follows. At first, market structure demonstrates that the public accounting profession is developing towards a high degree of concentration. In addition, for the entire industry, the degree of imperfect competition is getting higher and higher. The entire industry as well as different types of accounting firms, including big 6, large, medium and small, are all at the stage of imperfect competition. The big 6, medium and small accounting firms are moving towards perfect competition, whereas the degree of imperfect competition of large accounting firms is getting higher and higher. With the respect to business sub-markets, the big 6, large, medium and small accounting firms are all at the stage of imperfect competition, too. However, the competitive degrees in business sub-markets of big 6 accounting firms, including audit, tax, management consultancy, corporate registration and other services businesses, are apparently different from the other three types of accounting firms. In addition, the average competitive degree of big 6 accounting firms is the highest. Second, as a percentage of total revenues, the ratio of tax business is the highest followed by audit business, corporate registration and other services, and management consultancy business. For different types of accounting firms, the big 6 accounting firms mainly focus on the audit business, large accounting firms put great importance on the tax and audit businesses, and medium and small accounting firms concentrate on the tax business. From the perspective of business diversification, compared with the other three types of accounting firms, the big 6 accounting firms are likely to engage in a higher degree of business diversification, and small accounting firms have the lowest degree of business diversification among the four types of accounting firms. Third, by adopting the “SCP paradigm”, this study developed a regression model of relation between market structures, conduct of accounting firms and the performance. Empirical results show that, for the entire industry, the degree of imperfect competition of accounting firms is positively related to performance, indicating that the degree of imperfect competition is getting higher, the market will go towards oligopoly, which will lead to a stronger profitability and improve the performance of accounting firms. The degree of business diversification is also positively related to performance, indicating that business diversification will make a positive contribution to the performance of accounting firms. Finally, this study further discussed the effects of competition degree and business diversification on the performance for various types of accounting firms. The results show that the degrees of imperfect competition of big 6, medium and small accounting firms are positively related to performance significantly. The association between degree of business diversification and performance is positive in big 6 but negative significantly in small accounting firms.

Abstract This study uses the firms of distribution center in Taiwan as empirical objects. We picked 19 firms as empirical sample. The sampling period is from 1995 to 2000.We use the data form is panel data and use fixed effect approach to verify. This study was based on Mason-Bain’s “Structure-Conduct-Performance” industrial economy theory. By researching the relationship among structure, conduct and performance of distribution center firms in Taiwan, the empirical results could test traditional industrial structural theory and provided the results to the managers of the firms. The independent variables are net worth ratio, capital stock introduced in nature logarithm form, advertising-sales ratio, R&D-sales ratio. Dependent variable PCM indicate firm’s performance. The empirical results are as follows: The result shows that capital stock, advertising-sales ratio and net worth ratio all have significantly positive effect on operating performance. On the other hand, previous one stage advertising-sales ratio have negative effect on PCM.

(3) to measure the performance of the industry change from a financial point of view and adopt regression analysis to investigate the medical biotechnology industry per unit of capital revenue and earnings per share relevant. The results found the following, Taiwan biotech medical industry: (1) That the market concentration, this market revenue belongs in low oligopoly markets. (2) From the manufacturer learned behavior, there are obvious differences in behavior between Taiwan listed biotech medical industry manufacturers. (3) The revenue and earnings per share per unit of capital were positively correlated.

The venture capital firm has brought in Taiwan since 1984. It has developed for 20 years. As time goes by , the investment business comes to mature period from introduction period. More and more venture capital firms have been created during this period. It has 241 firms until now. The vigorous development of investment business that has great contribution for Taiwan’s economical success in the past time. Studying the papers of the Venture Capital from foreign to domain countries, all we got are these that they analyzed the organizational structure from peer to peer and more fragmentary. From these, we can’t catch the overview for the operation of Venture Capital Company. And we also can’t understand how they worked and the possible reaction paths of cause and effect. Therefore, this study was base on 「structure-Conduct-Performance」of industrial economy theory. And picked 35 local Venture Capital firms totally as empirical sample, and the sampling period is from 1996 to 2001, ,place order the municipal to share the three variableses such as market concentration rate、market share ratio and IPO ratio etc. to represent the structure factor;place order the municipal to share the five variableses such as Venture Capital fund management style、age、 diversification degree、long term investment / asset ratio and directors hold rates etc. to represent the conduct factor;place order the municipal to share the two variableses such as ROA、ROE ect, to represent the performance factor, with the least square method of three stages( Three Stage Least Square),to find out each variable to affect the relation mutually. Overall, the results of this study support the idea that there are significant effects on the structure-conduct-performance of venture capital firms.

Abstracts The intensive process of financial integration, together with the profound transformation that has taken place around the world. Keeping up with this trend, Korea securities industry has become a much more competitive market after a period of intense and continuous liberalization. This trend is expected to continue as regulations fall, competition from foreign securities firms picks up and in response to the general globalization of markets. The existing literature on Korea securities industry has centered on the analysis of scale and scope economies under the implicit assumption that all firms are efficient. On the contrary, very few studies have focused on efficiency analysis, in spite of the fact that the greatest potential gains on costs are obtained by eliminating existing inefficiencies rather than trying to reach the adequate size and scope of financial intermediaries (Domenech,1992; Grifell and Lovell,1993). First, this paper uses cost frontier methodology from distribution free approach (Schmidt and Sickles, 1984) to estimate X-efficiency - whether securities firms are using their inputs efficiently - for a sample of Korea securities firms between 1997 and 2000. Four outputs include brokerage commissions, trading income, underwriting revenue and interest income. Three input variables are as following, price of labor, price of fixed capital and price of borrowed funds (Clark, 1996). The second part of this paper attempts to identify whether structure-conduct-performance (SCP) hypothesis or efficiency-structure (EFS) hypothesis is applied to Korea securities industry through applying X-inefficiency as efficiency factor (Goldberg and Rai, 1996) This paper shows that there is a significantly positive relationship between market structure and market performance through a firm’s conduct that support SCP hypothesis in Korea securities industry. While there is little support that performance is a result of superior X efficiency. This would suggest that government merger policy should not as a rule being influenced by claims of expected cost efficiency benefits from mergers. Background and Objectives After the implementation of the National Health Insurance Program in Taiwan, the market share of different levels of health care organizations, and the distributions of professional manpower have been changed. More important, the NHI payment for major illnesses has provided a strong financial incentive for specific service market, especially for dialysis market. The major purpose of this study is to understand the changes in dialysis market structures over time and its corresponding effects on dialysis providers’ production function and performance. Methods The research framework is based on Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) model .The research design was retrospective secondary analysis longitudinally .The study period was from 1997 to 1999.During the study period, all dialysis providers in Taiwan were included into study organizations, which were classified into three groups, long-term providers, new providers, and withdraw providers. Generalized estimating equation was used to identify the factors associated with the performance of dialysis facility over time. Results 1. From the perspective of external environment, the demand of dialysis was still growing and the inputs of medical resource increased correspondingly. A major proportion of dialysis facilities were located in Taipei areas. And higher prevalence and incidence of areas were not related to have higher aggregation of dialysis facility. Oppositely, more dialysis providers gathered in population centre. 2. In terms of market structure, the prevalence of dialysis in all counties increased year-by-year. Forty percent of dialysis market that were in a monopoly market, but most facilities were still under a competitive area. Among new providers, the majority of them were district hospitals and dialysis clinics. Most of withdraw dialysis providers were district hospitals. 3. At baseline (1999), the areas with higher prevalence and incidence had more inputs of medical equipments and medical staffs. However, market competition did not have significant influence on the change of dialysis providers’ inputs of medical resource. 4. Among the regions with new dialysis providers, the original dialysis providers had more inputs of medical equipment than the year before last. And the results also pointed out the new dialysis providers had the lower performance in comparison with original dialysis providers. 5. Using the generalized estimating equation(GEE) for predicting the determing factor, the results indicated that dialysis facilities in lower competition area、ownership for private and legal medical facility、with more medical equipments and physicians had the better performance in dialysis market. The prediction of GEE models also fitted on withdraw providers. Discussion and Suggestion In dialysis market, the competition already exists in different levels of health care organizations .Facing market competition, the public medical facilities or new providers have a challenge on operation of facility. Therefore, in a highly competitive market, developing a new market area may be a good strategy for long-term. In addition, for policy makers, they should focus on the distributions of dialysis market and provide related information to dialysis providers as a reference of operation. For the region of the insufficiency of medical care, the administration should encourage more providers to set a facility in order to maintain the right of patients accepting medical care.

Department stores have become indispensable for the domestic customers to do shopping and to spend their leisure time. It does not merely provide the sales of commodities but also combines entertainment and fashion authority. Furthermore, the prospect of department stores could indicate the economic status of a country. It also reflects the standards of education level and culture for a country. That is why it is called “Window of Economy”. The decreasing demand of consuming market and the expansion of enterprises size caused competition become more and more intense. The enterprises make all their efforts to draw customer’s attention through certain strategies and extra resources. This study is utilized the concept of structure-conducts- performance which sampled the department stores of Listed, OTC, and public companies during the year of 1996 to 2004. It uses market sharing as a factor of structure; sales locations, advertising expenditures, fixed assets, and the established year as factors of conducts; ROA, ROE, and EPS as factors of performance. Through 3-stage lease square, 3SLS, to analyze the relationship between structure, conducts, and performance. The result showed that there are significant affects on the structure- conduct-performance of department stores.

This thesis aims to explore the relationship between market structure, firm conduct and performance of the automobile industry in mainland China by applying the structure-conduct-performance (S-C-P) model of industrial organization. There are many outstanding studies using S-C-P approach to examine the dynamics between industrial development and performance, such as E. Mason, J. Bain, W. Sherpherd, F.M. Schere, etc. However, most of them focus on the market economies in western countries. Few of them discuss the situations in Eastern Europe, China and former Soviet Union countries that undergo economic transitions. The thesis intends to explore the characteristics of the market structure, firm conduct and economic performance in China’s automobile industry, to examine the dynamics of S-C-P in automobile industry by regression analysis, and to evaluate the development and problems of the automobile industry in mainland China. Although China has been undergoing economic transitions from a planned economy to a market economy since 1980s, not all the characteristics of the planned economy are replaced. The regulatory policy making and implementation have significant impacts on its automobile market structure and firm conduct in this industry. In this regard, the thesis intends to discuss how China’s policy influences its automobile industry. Paramount findings of this research suggest that, in China’s automobile industry, market structure, firm conduct and performance interact with one another. Regression analyses indicate that market structure, firm conduct and performance are strong associated. The market structure of the automobile industry in China characterizes large firms and groups, the growing market share rate of large-scale enterprises on a yearly basis and the rise of market concentration degree (CR4, CR8). However, the value of market concentration degree of sedan manufacturers decreases due to the increase of competitors in this market. As a result, the market structure of China’s automobile industry will evolve to oligopoly in the future. Firm conducts such as merger, reorganization and price competition help to improve the market structure. Other firm behaviors like investment, R&D, and marketing strategies influence the market structure and performance and vice versa. Moreover, China’s automobile industrial policies have various impacts on market structure, firm conduct and performance. In practice, some goals of the automobile policies are attainable, however, others are unattainable in practice. Based on the data between 1995 and 2003, a statistical analysis of concentration degree and performance in automobile industry suggest a positive relationship that higher market concentration degree results in better performance (higher industrial added-value rate), regardless whole-car manufacturers, group enterprises or sedan manufacturers. The multiple regression analyses of five variables related to market structure represents that the values of concentration degree (H) and market share (MS) alike have positive effects on the value performance whereas the values of market share rate squared (MS²) and labor density(Labor) alike have negative effects on the value of performance. These results support our hypotheses in this study. Nevertheless, the result of a relationship test for capital density(Capital) and performance is different from our hypothesis. The value of capital density of 34 car firms and the value of performance have a positive relationship, which echoes our assumption. Yet the hypothesis test for capital density of 15 groups leads to the opposite. It suggests that: capital advantage does not emerge in China’s automobile industry so far. In particular, assets of some automobile groups do not have beneficial effects on business performance. Firm conduct includes one variables: investment. Regression analysis indicates a positive relationship between investment and performance. The result is consistent with our hypothesis and concludes: constant investment contributes to automobile firm performance. Relationship testing for time and performance shows that: when the value of time increases, the value of 34 automobile firms’ performance decreases whereas the value of 15 groups’ performance increases, accordingly. The theory of Industrial organization provides multiple criteria to assess firm performance which usually aims to maximize profit or market share. In the case of current automobile industry in China, whether or not local automobile firms or state-owned enterprises achieve a successful brand building of China-made vehicles should be an important indicator of performance. This research also discovers that on one hand the automobile groups and large-scale enterprises in China embrace short-term goals to maximize firm scale and market shares so as to maximize revenues by exploiting the advantages of economy of scale, however, on the other hand, they ignore fundamental, long-term goals to be sustainable, successful and competitive corporations that invest R&D to increase business efficiency, reduce costs, and boost marginal revenue and added-value rate. Being a big firm is never easy yet being a competitive enterprise is even more difficult. Only with constant improvement in management, investment in R&D, the invention of production can an enterprise survive and succeed in the competition in China’s automobile market.

Container shipping industry has developed over fifty years and replaced the tramp to be a tendency in international shipping industry. This study applies S-C-P and constructs four equations, market share, containership enlargement, ratio of profitability, and average freight to investigate the relationships among the structure, conduct, and performance in international container shipping industry. In empirical study, the sample covers 12 leading shipping liners with a data spanning from 2003 to 2012.This study has reached the following results: 一、Under the fierce competition, containership enlargement has positive relationship to the market share. Due to the over capacity, joint venture has significantly negative relationship to the market share. 二、The large scale carriers often adopt large containerships to meet its competitive advantage. In addition, the price of new containership has significantly negative relationship to containership enlargement. Joint venture has significantly positive relationship to containership enlargement. 三、Containership enlargement has a positive relationship to carrier’s profit. And in the era of low interest rates, chartered containership has significantly negative relationship to profit. Finally, the global economic growth has significantly positive relationship to carrier’s profit. 四、Carriers surcharge the BAF in order to reflect the cost of fuel. The economic growth and two time dummy variables have significantly positive relationship to freight level, but the global shipping capacity has significantly negative relationship to freight level.

As to the domestic security firms, there will be a deep impact. Therefore, this research uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method to examine the domestic security firms'' operation efficiency at first part. The results find that there is a positive effect between the trading amount and operation efficiency. Besides, the efficiency of full-service firms and brokers are poor, which shows that the efficiency still need to be improved. At second part, this study was based on Mason and Bain''s " Structure — Conduct — Performance " industrial economy theory. We picked 94 firms totally as empirical sample, and the sampling period is from 1997 to 2001. The financial industry is the foundation of a country's economy. As the technology advances and financial liberalization, in order to meet the international needs, and further integration with the world, makes the government policies and regulations tend to open and loose, the financial institutions business is also more diversified. In addition, the Government in order to comply with the advent of electronic, and actively promote the financial environment of digital. With the changing external factors, in order to allow enterprises to have a competitive advantage, the structure and behavior of the financial industry in response to changes in the times. Can these changes can improve business performance and efficiency? Due to the study of the industrial structure, corporate conduct affects the efficiency is rare, and the relevant research period is relatively short, or only consider specific industries. Therefore, this study constructs the panel data model of Taiwanese financial industry from the first quarter of 2008 to the third quarter of 2016, and divides the industry into Financial Holding Company, Bank, Securities and Insurance. First, cross - industry comparative analysis was performed on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) efficiency, Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI). Second, the panel data model which deals with the performance and efficiency of business structure and corporate conduct, is included the Four-firms Concentration Ratio (CR4) and the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), and multivariate variables, and use DEA to estimate the efficiency value. Finally, the industry will be further divided into Financial Holding Company, Banking, Securities and Insurance industries, to detect the impact of different industry performance and efficiency of the factors. The empirical results show that DEA efficiency value of the part, Financial Holding Company industry regardless of technical efficiency and scale of remuneration, compared to Securities and Insurance industry, Banking industry seems to be weak, showing that its operating principles need to identify problems and improve. Regard to MPI, the Bank and Insurance industry has progressive trends, mainly due to the average technological progress growth rate; Financial Holding Company and Securities industry productivity decline trend, Financial Holding Company industry has the decline average technological growth rate, its production technology need to be improved; The reasons for the efficiency of the Securities industry are the decline average efficiency rate of change, the average technological progress growth rate and the average pure technology efficiency rate of decline, indicating that efficiency and production technology must be improved. In the panel data empirical results show that Financial Holding Company industry, market share, HHI, debt ratio, operating expenses rate, revenue per person and CPI have a significant impact on DEA. With respect to Bank, market share, CR4, debt ratio, sales per employee and monitoring indicators have a significant impact on ROE. Securities, market share, CR4, HHI, revenue per person and CPI have a significant impact on DEA. Insurance, market share, debt ratio, operating expense ratio and sales per employee have a significant effect on the ROE; CR4, HHI and operating expense ratio have a significant effect on DEA.

An abstract of the thesis of Lai, Hsiou-Mei for the Master of Business Administration presented in January 2009. Title: Structure-Conduct-Performance (S-C-P) research of auto wheel manufacturers of Taiwan. Because of the increase of price of gasoline、raw materials and lack of consumer confidence, the automobile industry market is continuously diving. Some auto wheel manufacturers have moved abroad, some are in cessation. The survivors are mostly the manufacturers with competitive products and quality, and continuously invested in research and innovation. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the current development of auto wheel manufacturers utilizing the Structure-Conduct-Performance(S-C-P) theory developed by Mason-Bain to analyze the market structure、manufacturers’ behavior and operation performance. The study used Two-Firm Concentration Ratio (CR2) and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) as index to measure concentration of the market. The study also evaluated the fluctuation of performance of manufactures using performance evaluation index from financial points of view to understand the operation of Taiwan auto wheel industry. The study found: (1)The market of auto wheels is a highly concentrated market. (2) From behavior of wheel manufacturers, the study found manufacturers are export-oriented, and have strong research and develop abilities, therefore, can produce with competitive price comparing to developed countries. (3) Although manufactures had high growth in revenues, the efficiency of their operations has not improved. This study suggested: (1) Manufacturers should move their factories closer to locations of aluminum to decrease cost of procurement. (2) Government should encourage manufactures to develop their own brand and help manufacturers to expand global market. Key words: Auto wheels, Structure-Conduct-Performance , market concentration , Firm Concentration.

Abstract:
Canada and the United States have the largest, bilateral trade relationship of any two nations. Fittingly, they also exchange the largest volume of international air travellers of any pair of countries. The terms under which Canada-United States air transportation are provided are set forth in the Canada-United States Bilateral Air Services Agreement. The current Agreement was founded upon the consumer demands and industry operating practices that prevailed in 1966. Although the Agreement was substantially modified in 1974, the essence of the regime has been rendered obsolete by the developments of transborder airline market characteristics. Canada and the United States have recognised that a new bilateral air services agreement is a necessity. Three general strategies have been proposed as the bases for a new regime: the specified rights option, the open border option, and the cabotage rights option. Specified rights is the genre of the current regime: all routes having entry strictly controlled. The open border option would entail complete freedom for either country’s carriers to contest all transborder routes. Cabotage rights allow carriers to contest any market within or between the two countries. A new agreement has yet to be achieved. The delay in finding an acceptable scheme has been the difficulty in meeting both major objectives for the new policy: efficiency and equity. This report examines the alternative schemes for a new Canada-United States air services regime. The structure-conduct-performance paradigm of industrial analysis is utilised to evaluate the nature of the distribution of benefits that would arise following the adoption of the various alternatives. The report concludes that the adoption of a phased-in, open border regime would best meet the twin objectives of efficiency enhancement and equity of opportunity.

The development of Taiwan’s economic has gradually progressed from the rural society toward the industry and commerce society. People's lives become richer and richer. With the improvement of living conditions and the advancement of technology, people’s demand of electrical appliances, electronic products and telecommunications equipment are continually increasing. Therefore, sales of 3C products in Taiwan has been showing a steady growth trend. The distributors of selling 3Cproducts also have changed from electrical stores of the earlier periods to today’s one-stop shopping chain stores. Within the rapid development, Elifemall, Tsannkuen, Tatung andSunfar are the most mommon retailers that are mentioned. Nowadays, 3C retail chain business in Taiwan has developed quite mature. This study hope to analyze the market structure, firms behavior and operating performance of 3C retail chain business on the base of Mason and Bain’s "structure - conduct - performance" theory. In this study:(1)Two-firm concentration ratio and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index are used as a measure of market concentration ratio indicators.(2)Five force analyses is applied to investigate organization behavior and competitive strategy of the industry.(3)The performance of the industry are evaluated through performance evaluation indicators from the public financial material, and exploring market operating conditions of 3C retail chain business nowadays.(4)Finally, by ways of 4P and SWOT analysis, further understanding of the operating principles, competitiveness, and industrial future development of the industry are expected. The study found as follows:(1)In terms of market structure, 3C retail chain business in Taiwan belongs to a highly concentrated market, the market becomes saturated and the product differentiation is not heterosexual. It is not easy to get into the market, and the competition is increasing.(2)Learned from the operating performance, during 2002-2010, Shunfa got the best performance in average, followed by Elifemall and Tsannkuen. The failure of the investment in Mainland during 2003-2006 affected Tsannkuen’s performance.(3)Tsannkuen and Elifemall own the top two major market share of 3C retail chain business in Taiwan. In recent years, new ways of shopping like online shopping, TV shopping, has begun impacting the traditional 3C retail chain business, which made them set up companies shopping sites to cope with the new consumption patterns.

From the social structure perspective, an imperfectly competitive market can be described as a social network made up of clique-like subgroups of firms that define each other as potential competitors and who monitor each other’s actions. This thesis employs the social structure and social network theory to provide an alternative explanation of a firm’s collusive behavior, an area rarely discussed in the sociological literature. This thesis postulates that the clique and social structural attributes, the role diversity and the position inequality, influence the intensity of competition which in turn affects firms’ performance. This thesis hypothesizes that members coordinated in a stable clique structure are more likely to show less intense competition with higher role diversity and less position inequality. This thesis uses the U.S.A. investment banking industry for its empirical setting. The samples are drawn from those investment banks that conducted underwriting businesses, serving as book runners and joint book runners for new issues of common shares in a syndicate from 1997 till 2006. The reciprocal relationship between two book-runner banks participating in each other’s syndicate construct the social network structure – cliques, which are then used to test the hypotheses of this thesis.
