Abstract:
The co-editor networks of academic journals are generally examined at the journal level. This paper investigates the geographies of the global co-editor network in oncology through the lens of cities. After using different network methods to analyze the global co-editor network, we found that the network can be characterized by a core-periphery structure. The dense core is occupied by many highly interconnected cities, whereas the periphery contains many cities maintaining loose connections with the core cities. The core shows an asymmetric dual sub-core structure. The greater sub-core is constituted by Northern American cities with New York, Washington DC, Boston, Houston, and Los Angeles in the center, whereas the smaller sub-core is formed by Asian cities and centered on Tokyo, Seoul, Osaka, Beijing, and Shanghai. The European core cities do not form a well-outlined sub-core but produce a ringlike shape around the Northern American core. This structure of the co-editor network is a consequence of the prestige effect still characterizing global science. Many European and Chinese journals tend to employ Northern American editors (US-based editors in the first place) to help increase the reputation of the journal. However, US-based journals are more interested in recruiting American editors from the top-ranked national cancer centers and universities rather than outside of the country.

Abstract:
AbstractDuring the nineteenth-century gold rush era, Chinese gold miners arrived spontaneously in California and, later, were invited in to work the Otago goldfields in New Zealand. This article considers how the initial arrival of Chinese in those areas was represented in two major newspapers of the time, the Daily Alta California and the Otago Witness. Both newspapers initially favored Chinese immigration, due to the economic benefits that accrued and the generally tolerant outlook of the newspapers' editors. The structure of the papers' coverage differed, however, reflecting the differing historical circumstances of California and Otago. Both papers gave little space to reporting Chinese in their own voices. The newspapers editors played the crucial role in shaping each newspaper's coverage over time. The editor of the Witness remained at the helm of his newspaper throughout the survey period and his newspaper consequently did not waver in its support of the Chinese. The editor of the Alta, by contrast, died toward the end of the survey period and his newspaper subsequently descended into racist, anti-Chinese rhetoric.

Abstract:
One challenge for graphic designers is to provide visual structures that efficiently organize what is seen on the computer screen when many users work on the same display. This paper reports work on such a project. The visual interface we describe is a part of the Prep Editor, an experimental environment for collaborative writing. We show how a graphic interface with a simple organizing structure can help collaboration by reducing screen clutter and focusing end-user tasks efficiently. The Prep Editor uses the metaphor of a column to support a variety of collaborative tasks. We believe that a columnar visual structure provides a comprehensible interaction mechanism to support collaborations in general, beyond the limited intent of this project. Graphic design for the Prep Editor is influenced by methods of page layout that have supported collaborations in the past, seen in a type of medieval manuscript known as a glossed bible. Glosses promoted orderly access to complex information and provided tools for scholars to organize, annotate, and cross-refer between different kinds of information, working alone or in concert with others.

From the Editors
 Huseyin Uzunboylu, Cigdem Hursen
 Dear Colleagues
It is a great honour for us to welcome you as Editors of Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences which has accepted publications indexed in qualified databases since 2006. Our main aim is to increase the quality of the journal day by day. We are ready to publish the new issue of Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences which has 5 articles written by authors from Cyprus, Portugal and Turkey.
The aim of this issue is to give the researchers an opportunity to share their academic studies. First of all, I would like to thank all authors who have contributed to this issue. There are different focuses in the articles. For example, Sibel Ersel Kaymakamoğlu aimed to explore the English language learning beliefs of the students studying in the Guidance and Counseling Department at one of the Universities in Northern Cyprus. It also explored if the participants’ perceptions about English language learning showed differences according to gender and age. The findings revealed significant differences between the male and female participants’ perceptions about English language learning beliefs. On the other hand, İshak Kozikoğlu aim of this research is to analyze the studies concerning challenges faced by novice teachers in terms of various aspects and compare challenges according to location of the studies conducted in Turkey and abroad. Another study conducted by Fernando Almeida. They describe the experience of using a serious game in the entrepreneurship field in the context of the classroom. For that, they adopt a quantitative research technique based on a survey research to measure the different characteristics experienced by higher education students when using serious games in the classroom to learn entrepreneurship. The students have multidisciplinary competences, coming from courses with strong emphasis in the area of management and technology. The use of the serious game allowed students to develop skills mainly in terms of innovation, leadership, strategic thinking, problem solving, business launch and risk management. Also, Belkıs Tekmen aim of this study is to review and discuss some of these components of preschool teacher education in the Turkish context such as the student selection policy, faculty development, recruitment policies and competencies of the graduates. Finally, Huseyin Bicen and Senay Kocakoyun aimed to determine the opinions of students who participated in the development and application process of an Android application named NEU-CEIT about the mobile learning environment, educational and sharing structure of the developed application. According to the results, it was revealed that outcomes related with the usage structure of the developed application were positive, educational structure of the application is appropriate to follow the curriculum, it is rich in terms of materials and it might be one of the applications that students can use for communication.
I would like to express my thanks to all authors preferring Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences to publish their articles, and also all reviewers working seriously in this process.
 Best regards,

Abstract:
The authors associated with the periodical Sztuka i Naród were highly critical of the art of the interwar period. In their common opinion, it was unpatriotic and limited to the worship of individualism, which proved to be disastrous for the state and its social structure. Still, Wacław Bojarski, the acting editor-in-chief, decided to honor Bruno Schulz with an obituary even though the writer had nothing to do with the nationalist ideology. Schulz did not write any “engaged” or “nationalist”, but for some reason the editors of Sztuka i Naród resolved to save his name and literary achievement from oblivion.

Abstract:
In this paper we present DOMMLite - an extensible domain specific language (DSL) for static structure definition of data base oriented applications. The model-driven engineering (MDE) approach, an emerging software development paradigm, has been used. The language structure is defined by the means of a meta model supplemented by validation rules based on Check language and extensions based on Extend language, which are parts of the openArchitectureWare framework [1]. The meta model has been defined along with the textual syntax, which enables creation, update and persistence of DOMMLite models using a common text editor. DSL execution semantics has been defined by the specification and implementation of the source code generator for a target platform with an already defined execution semantics. In order to enable model editing, a textual Eclipse editor has also been developed. DSL, defined in this way, has the capability of generating complete source code for GUI forms with CRUDS (Create-Read-Update-Delete-Search) and navigation operations [2,3,4,5].

Abstract This paper examines how external governance pressure affects the type of debt that firms issue. Consistent with a governance mechanism substitution effect, we find that an exogenous increase (decrease) in governance pressure from the product (takeover) market has a significant negative (positive) impact on the use of bank (public debt) financing over public debt (bank loan) issuance. Tests using changes in the strictness of loan covenants provide corroborative evidence. These findings are consistent with the notion that firms endogenously substitute governance mechanisms and that demand for creditor governance depends on the relative strength of alternative external governance mechanisms. Abstract:
When programmers view program code text, the abstract and invisible nature of the underlying program code structures remains inherently challenging for them to visualize. Widespread availability of virtual reality (VR) hardware and software now make VR visualization of program code structures accessible. In such potentially visually satiating environments, the application of gamification has the potential to provide an additional focus and motivational factor towards comprehending program structures. Towards this end, this paper describes our Gamified Virtual Reality FlyThruCode (GVR-FTC) approach which gamifies our immersive metaphorical visualization of any given software code structure. Our initial results show that VR-based gamification (specifically code dependencies and modularization) can be more fun and motivational and support structural program comprehension better than using a PC-based text editor for a similarly gamified situation.

Abstract:
‘Proper words in proper places make the true definition of style.’ Jonathan Swift Medical writing is a creative process. It combines rhetoric and science to produce a piece of work that connects the scientific community with the general public. However, despite pressure to publish, many researchers dread the thought of medical writing. It can be an intimidating journey and hard work – and after all, where does one learn how to write a good science paper? Is there a recipe for success? The answer lies in the IMRaD (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) structure. This allows authors to organise and structure their work in an effective manner, which maintains the emphasis on the matter of good science. Some may think applying such a structure is too formulaic and breeds mediocrity. Others may believe IMRaD allows authors to organise thoughts and ideas as well as helping them to remember to convey critical elements. That it makes evaluation of a manuscript easier for editors and reviewers and also allows readers to locate specific information without going through the entire article is less contentious. Although the IMRaD structure may not reflect the order of scientific enquiry and activities, most journals continue to apply it to medical articles. It appears that having such a discipline to writing opens the doors to those who have not yet overcome their writer’s block. In the third article of the publishing series, Elisabeth Heseltine informs readers ‘how to write’. Elisabeth became a scientific editor through science rather than language. She has worked as a researcher on the BBC science programme Horizon, as a proof-reader and then as a copy-writer. Abstract:
The writing efficiency of a type of computer-based groupware called a group editor was evaluated in six environments by factorially combining three communication media (audio only, audio plus video, and face-to-face) each with and without the group editor. Twelve subjects familiar with journalistic writing were pretested and matched into dyads. Subjects were trained with the group editor and wrote news articles based on a standard set of questions about actors and objects shown in short video clips. The quality of the writing task products was consistently high and showed no differences among conditions. Results of a balanced, within-subject analysis of variance design indicated that face-to-face conditions took significantly less time to complete than the other two communication conditions. When the group editor was used, however, all communication media were equal in terms of efficiency to face-to-face communications. Significantly less variance occurred in the audio plus video condition with the group editor than in the audio or the audio plus video conditions which did not have the group editor. Users preferred co-authoring with the group editor and considered writing trials with the group editor to be more productive. The results were discussed in terms of the benefits of using the group editor to increase the overall communication structure, to reduce variability of writing time among dyads, and to increase efficiency when face-to-face communication is not practical. Methodological procedures for matching subjects, using within-subject designs, and structuring a writing task were discussed as means of reducing team variability in writing efficiency when investigating computer-supported, cooperative work configurations.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract We develop a theory of multiperiod debt structure. A simple trade-off between the termination threat required to make debt repayments incentive compatible and the desire to avoid early liquidation determines the number of repayments, their timing, and amounts. As firms increase their borrowing, they add periodic risky repayments from the back of the maturity structure, with the time between repayments increasing in cash-flow risk. Cash-flow growth or a significant risk-free cash-flow component limits the number of risky repayments. Firms with a significant risk-free cash-flow component choose dispersed maturity profiles with smaller, relatively safe repayments every period, rather than riskier periodic repayments. Abstract:
The article presents a detailed analysis of the structure and contents of the Journal of the Ministry of Education before and in the time of its editor A.V. Nikitenko in the years 1856-1860. The author studies and analyzes the articles published in the Journal and their impact on the educational community of those days. The research reveals the problems in the sphere of education in the country, as well as identifies the change in the Journals development that followed the policy of the Ministry of Education in the period under review. Despite some controversy in interpreting the efficiency of the new editor, the benefits are obvious. With A.V. Nikitenko as editor, the Journal received better state budgeting, introduced a new theme - pedagogy, established cooperation with famous scientists and social activists, whose works were regularly published on its pages. All this greatly added to its popularity and to the increase in the number of subscribers. The author resumes that the new editor was the founder of the liberal development of the Journal.

Abstract:
Many critics contend that corporate newspapers are less vigorous editorially than entrepreneurial newspapers because they are more concerned about the bottom line than about information diversity. This study, which involves a national probability survey of daily newspapers, fails to support that belief. Corporate newspapers publish more local editorials and letters to the editor, and a larger number and proportion of editorials and letters that are critical of mainstream groups and institutions. From a broader perspective, these findings may be interpreted as supporting theories which hold that the pace of social change quickens as social systems become more structurally pluralistic.

Abstract:
<p>Editing bibliographic data is an important part of library information systems. In this paper we discuss existing approaches in developing of user interface for editing MARC records. There are two basic approaches, screen forms that support entering bibliographic data without knowledge of the MARC structure and direct editing of MARC records that is shown on the screen. The main result presented in the paper is Eclipse editor for MARC records that fully supports editing of MARC records. It is written in Java as Eclipse plug-in so it is platform-independent. It can be extended for using with any data store. At the end, the paper presents Rich Client Platform application made of MARC editor plug-in which can be used outside of Eclipse. The practical application of the results is integration of created Rich Client Platform application in BISIS library information system. <strong></strong></p>
