Abstract:
This investigation aims to explore the motivating factors behind the decision to engage in informal self-employment within ethnic economies. Through a series of semistructured qualitative interviews with Latin American immigrant women participating in informal self-employment in Stockholm, this study focuses on the ways in which agency and structure can influence economic decisions. Using the theory of mixedembeddedness, the results show that participating in informal self-employment can be understood as both a product of capitalizing on available social and ethnic resources, as well as the ou

The use of group lending for poverty alleviation is a widespread feature of modern microfinance. The structure of joint-liability credit - if one member defaults the others are held financially responsible - produces a natural tension between a borrower's social and economic interests. This study integrates theory from economics, sociology, and behavioural experiments to address the question, "How do social and economic mechanisms interact to shape a microcredit group's financial behaviour?" The empirical analysis involves an original dataset from a microfinance institution in Sierra Leone. Th

Abstract:
In response to uncertainty imposed on ITO business environments, it is reported that relational and structural embeddedness play an important role in safeguarding against opportunistic behaviour and improving long-term performance. A firm can outsource its IT services to a partner who is believed to be reliable and competent among existing parties for whom it has the outsourcing histories in the perspective of relational embeddedness. In contrast, from the viewpoint of structural embeddedness, a firm can collect information on multiple alternative candidates through the observation of their ne
