This chapter introduces Anaxagoras’s metaphysics and the relations of fundamentality and composition that hold between entities in his ontology: the Opposites (properties), stuffs, objects, the so-called seeds (i.e., reified structures), and nous with its vortex. The chapter argues that the crux of Anaxagoras’s metaphysics, which will also influence Plato the most, is the stance that parts of properties are parts of objects. Objects are qualified by properties by having parts of properties (in preponderance) within their constitution. Thus, constitutional overlap is the ‘mechanism’ by which Anaxagoras accounts for the qualification of objects. The chapter provides an account of Anaxagoras’s Opposites as causal powers and explains the type of causal efficacy the Opposites have in the world: constitutional causal efficacy.

The sociopolitical controversies on campus that have resulted in “safe spaces” have pressured traditional structures based on proxemics, such as the mentorship, to reinvent themselves or disappear. In the chapter, “proximity” itself is defined not in terms of spatial contiguity but as an attentional structure by which the mentee achieves an intimate understanding at a distance of the objective achievements in teaching and writing that distinguish her mentor and other role models and that provoke acts of creative mimesis and exegesis by the mentee. Inspired by the ancient Stoic practice of the “care of the self” as explicated by Michel Foucault, the crux of the redefined mentored relation is not inculcating knowledge but guiding the growth of the mentee's critical consciousness in preparation for a career and a life well-lived, befitting a noble spirit. Since the focus of the redefined mentored relation privileges distance and objective spirit (via the critical study of works) over personal interaction, the scholarly autonomy of the mentee is a noteworthy learning outcome.

This chapter considers Descartes’s connections with Guez de Balzac and his circle, and looks more closely at the language of contemporary poetic practice and theory. In his 1623 preface to Marino’s Adone, Jean Chapelain develops a critical vocabulary of novelty, generic hybridity, and verisimilitude. Meanwhile, Alexandre Hardy accuses modern dramatists of neglecting dispositio, or the coherent ordering of dramatic subject matter. The state of tragicomedy in France is exemplified in the 1628 tragicomic reworking of Schélandre’s 1608 tragedy Tyr et Sidon, prefaced by Balzac’s apologist François Ogier. At the crux of these debates, we find the question of how to balance the need for variety to dispel boredom with the need for structure to dispel distraction.

This chapter examines nurturing practices in southern Moldova to reflect on how these enable the transnational mobility made necessary by an ineffective state. The chapter shows how historical experience of both local and socialist state structures of caregiving, as well as a virtual communication era, are part of a distinctive transnational nurturing nexus, where children are provided for by remittances from women labor migrants (other mothers), as well as by state-run daycares, grandmothers, and sometimes friends. Five women’s accounts of their experiences of nurturing as transnational labor migrants form the crux of this chapter as it engages with feminist questions about nurturing and othermothers, including how these are linked to women’s prospects for supporting households and pursuing their own aspirations.

In the Harmonics, Ptolemy reveals that the heavens and human souls share the same formal structure. They are characterized by the same set of ratios, the ones studied by harmonics, the mathematical science that investigates the relations among musical pitches. In other words, harmonic ratios describe the relations among not only musical pitches but also the parts of the human soul and the movements and configurations of heavenly bodies. Moreover, Ptolemy explains why it is that these various objects are characterized by these same ratios. It is because of harmonia. This chapter argues that concept of harmonia is the crux of Ptolemy's ethical theory. It is because harmonia operates most fully in human souls, the heavens, and musical scale systems that human beings' mathematical study of the latter two sets of phenomena has the power to shape and transform their souls.

Freire contended that teachers' knowledge sets are incomplete without the critical engagement and dialogic exchange with students. Such non-hierarchical and collaborative arrangements are perceived to be at the crux of transformative praxis. As a way of testing the possibilities around this pedagogical alternative, this project encouraged teachers to creatively explore critical pedagogical approaches (CPA) in the classroom and the extent to which this enhanced the engagement of students, and, ultimately, their ability to critically apply their understanding of existing knowledge frames to the formation and presentation of new forms of knowledge. Written observations and self-reflections point to the salience of systemic constraints that were rooted in the structural and cultural facets of the school system, and the effect of these both on teachers' adoption of a bimodal model of instruction, and, on their partial success in this endeavor. Implications for theory and practices are herein discussed.

Around 10% of ventricular arrhythmias (VA) occur in the absence of underlying structural heart disease. These so-called ‘idiopathic’ VAs usually have a benign clinical course. Only rarely do these “benign” arrhythmias trigger polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (PVT) and idiopathic ventricular fibrillation (VF). Due to their focal origin and to the absence of underlying myocardial scar, the 12-lead ECG very precisely establishes the right (RV) or left (LV) ventricular site of origin of the arrhythmia and can help regionalizing the origin of VT for ablation. A 12-lead ECG obtained during the baseline rhythm and 24-hour ECG Holter monitoring are indicated in order to identify structural or electrical disorders leading to PVT/VF and to determine the VA burden. The most frequent origin of idiopathic VAs is the RV outflow tract (OT). Other origins include the LVOT, the LV fascicles (fascicular VTs), the LV and RV papillary muscles, the crux cordis, the mitral and tricuspid annuli and the RV moderator band. Recognizing the typical anatomic sites of origin combined with a 12 lead ECG assessment facilitates localization. Antiarrhythmic drug therapy (including use of beta-blockers) or catheter ablation may be indicated to suppress or eliminate idiopathic VAs, particularly upon severe arrhythmia-related symptoms or if the arrhythmia burden is high and ‘tachycardia’-induced cardiomyopathy is suspected. Catheter ablation is frequently preferred to prevent lifelong drug therapy in young patients.

Only rarely do these benign arrhythmias trigger polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and idiopathic ventricular fibrillation. Due to their focal origin and to the absence of underlying myocardial scar, the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) very precisely establishes the right or left ventricular site of origin of the arrhythmia and can help regionalize the origin of ventricular tachycardia for ablation. A 12-lead ECG obtained during the baseline rhythm and 24 h ECG Holter monitoring are indicated in order to identify structural or electrical disorders leading to polymorphic ventricular tachycardia/ventricular fibrillation and to determine the VA burden. The most frequent origin of idiopathic VAs is the right ventricular outflow tract. Other origins include the left ventricular outflow tract, the left ventricular fascicles (fascicular ventricular tachycardias), the left and right ventricular papillary muscles, the crux cordis, the mitral and tricuspid annuli, and the right ventricular moderator band. Recognizing the typical anatomic sites of origin combined with a 12-lead ECG assessment facilitates localization. Antiarrhythmic drug therapy (including use of beta blockers) or catheter ablation may be indicated to suppress or eliminate idiopathic VAs, particularly if there are severe arrhythmia-related symptoms or if the arrhythmia burden is high and ‘tachycardia’-induced cardiomyopathy is suspected. Catheter ablation is frequently preferred to prevent lifelong drug therapy in young patients.
