Abstract:
Background: Closed spinal dysraphism of primary neurulation failure could be associated with filar anomalies, such as filar lipoma or thickened and tight filum terminale (TFT), resulting from impaired secondary neurulation. Retained medullary cord (RMC) is a remnant of the cavitary medullary cord originating from the secondary neurulation failure. Some filar lipomas are known to contain a central canal-like ependyma-lined lumen with surrounding neuroglial tissues (E-LC w/NGT), that is, a characteristic histopathology of RMC. To clarify the embryological background of these filar anomalies, we evaluated the histopathological findings. Methods: Among 41 patients with lesions of primary neurulation failure who underwent initial untethering surgery, the filum including cord-like structure (C-LS) was additionally resected in 10 patients (five dorsal and transitional lipomas; five limited dorsal myeloschisis). We retrospectively analyzed the clinical, neuroradiological, intraoperative, and histopathological findings. Results: Among 10 patients, two patients were diagnosed with RMC based on morphological features and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. The diagnosis of filar lipoma was made in six patients, since various amounts of fibroadipose tissue were histopathologically noted in the filum. Two patients were diagnosed with TFT, since the filum was composed solely of fibrocollagenous tissue. E-LC w/NGT was noted not only in both C-LSs of RMCs but also in two out of six fila both with filar lipomas and fila with TFTs. Conclusion: These findings provide further evidence for the idea that entities, such as filar lipoma, TFT, and RMC, can be considered consequences of a continuum of regression failure occurring during late secondary neurulation.

Abstract:
AbstractDipetalonema caudispina (Molin, 1858) and D. gracile (Rudolphi, 1809) (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) are two of six known species of filarial nematodes that parasitize Neotropical non-human primates. Adult filariae were collected from the thoracic and abdominal cavities of 38 of 44 specimens of Sapajus macrocephalus (Spix, 1823) and nine of ten specimens of Cebus albifrons (Humboldt, 1812) (Primates: Cebidae), distributed in the Yavarí-Mirín river basin and used locally for human consumption. Co-occurrence of D. caudispina and D. gracile is reported for the first time, with a prevalence of 18.5% (10 of 54 hosts examined). Our finding of D. caudispina and D. gracile in cebids from the Peruvian Amazon constitutes a new geographical record for both filariae, two new host records for D. caudispina, and the first report of D. gracile in S. macrocephalus. In addition, we provide morphometric data for D. caudispina, complementing the original description, as well as scanning electron microscopy details on the structure of the area rugosa and number of caudal papillae in males.

Abstract:
The article presents diversity in innovation in the European states as an aspect of the development of the information society. In accordance with the undertaken research, innovations occupy a specific position among all the factors conditioning the development of the information society. Not only do they dictate the rate and the directions of the economic development, but to a significant degree they influence the forms and the structure of the international cooperation. As a result, innovations constitute this element which in fact determines the international competitiveness of both individual industries and entire economies. The agglomeration of the European states according to their Summary Innovation Index (SII) structure has revealed a clear distinction between the studied elements. They fall into two categories, which are related to an overall level of the socio-economic development as well as significant stages of the development of the European Union. The first group consists mainly of the states of the EU15 and non-member states, while the second group comprises of the EU2004, EU2007 and the candidate states. Considering the mean values of the SII elements, the largest distance between the two groups was revealed between the input of the intellectual property (IP) and the knowledge creation (KC) into innovation of the states, while the smallest distance was revealed in the areas of the I&E and the application.

Abstract:
The 2nd pillar of the Common Agricultural Policy plays a very significant role in shaping the image of a modern, European village. It’s impact on the development of agriculture and rural areas seems to be obvious, for example because of the place it occupies in the structure of the European Union budget. However, it’s very important to precisely determine the effects of its implementation. Therefore, in this article the main goal was to show the reasons for diversifying the implementation of the Rural Development Program 2007–2013 in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Against the background of differences in the economic and production situation of the agricultural sector, the design of the Programs was evaluated and it’s impact on changes in the agricultural sectors of these countries was compared. To show the impact of the funds of the second pillar of the CAP, the time range presenting changes in agriculture covers the years before and after integration. Based on them, a comparison of the implemented activities and the structure of their financing has been made.

Abstract:
Abstract Group velocity dispersion measurements of Rg waves generated either by blasts or by local earthquakes are used to investigate the shallow crustal structure of Almería (southern Spain). In principle, the usable frequency range of 250 to 2000 mHz allows determination of structures to depths of about 4 km. For this purpose, the main operations are a detailed dispersion analysis of high-frequency Rayleigh waves propagating along very short paths and the inversion of Rg-wave group velocities. A total of 21 seismic events were studied. These events had small magnitudes (2.0 to 2.5 approximately) and very shallow focal depths (about 100 m) and were taken from a set of 214 events that occurred in 1991 during a Spanish-Italian seismic experiment. The events were recorded at seven single-component stations belonging to the Regional Seismic Network of Andalucía at approximate distances of between 15 and 57 km from the source. These events were grouped into six seismic sources according to specific criteria. We used digital filtering techniques providing a significant improvement in signal-to-noise ratio to determine ray-path group velocities, and we inverted dispersion data via generalized inversion. In order to obtain refined dispersion data, we have carried out a further regionalization of group velocities, and thus six small subregions have been resolved in group velocities. The highest group velocity values, from 1.93 to 2.25 km sec−1, correspond to the Filabres mountain range, which is an area containing materials of the Nevado-Filábride complex of Paleozoic and Triassic age. On the other hand, low velocity values, between 1.39 and 1.56 km sec−1, correspond to the Alhamilla mountain range, which belongs to the Alpujárride complex and contains conglomerates of the Cambrian and Tortonian periods. The velocities obtained for the neogene-quaternary basin of the Andarax river, with materials of the Tortonian and Pliocene periods, are also very low, between 1.35 and 1.68 km sec−1. We inverted the regionalized group velocities in order to obtain the shear velocity structure of the region for depths down to 4 km. According to the regional Earth models that we obtained, we find clear variations in velocity both laterally and vertically for several zones with different composition. The Filabres mountain range shows high shear velocity values: 2.14 to 2.83 km sec−1. In the opposite end, we have the Andarax basin that presents the lowest shear velocity values, consistent with its sedimentary structure: 1.56 to 2.55 km sec−1. Intermediate shear-wave velocities characterize the remaining regions: the Tabernas-Sorbas basin, the Gádor mountain range, and the volcanic region of Nijar-Cape of Gata. Although the relationship between lateral changes in Rg dispersion and geologic structure may not be straightforward, in this study, we have observed a correlation between those changes and the sharply contrasting geology between adjacent geological formations.

Abstract:
The area of interest is located in the Sierra de los Filabres in semi-arid steppe of the province of Almeria in Spain. The amount of water in the soil is a limiting factor and its availability affects the structure and species composition of ecosystem. On the other hand, the type of vegetation affects the water loss via evapotranspiration and thus the soil microclimate. It has a great influence on the growth and activity of soil microbial communities and hence the dynamics of decomposition of organic matter and nutrient availability. The aim of this study was to assess the intensity of microbial transformations of soil organic nitrogen and describe changes in the content of nitrogen mineral forms at different depths in the semi-arid climate soil in the Mediterranean region. Availability and movement of nitrogen was monitored by capturing the mineral nitrogen into the structures of ion exchange resin applied to the soil in three different variants (control variant, a variant with the addition of cellulose, and the variant with the addition of raw silk). Ion exchange resins have been installed into soil profile in 2008, 2009, and 2010. After the in situ exposure the ion exchange resins were removed from the soil profile and the quantity of captured mineral N was determined by distillation titration method. The availability of ammonia-nitrogen was significantly affected by the addition of different substrates mainly by the additions of the raw silk, where the availability was regularly the highest. However, the availability of ammonia-nitrogen form was generally higher than the availability of nitrate form.

Abstract:
Abstract Relations between Alpine detachment-bounded metamorphic domes, crustal-scale strike-slip fault zones and sedimentary basins in the Internal zones of the Betic cordillera are still matter of debate. Current tectonic interpretations of these basins vary from late-orogenic extensional structures to compressional ones associated with strike-slip motions along major still active faults. Structural investigations including new field mapping, meso-scale faults recognition, palaeostress analysis of brittle small-scale faults systems were performed in the sedimentary cover of the Almanzora corridor and the Huércal-Overa basins, located either in the hanging wall unit of the Filabres extensional shear zone or at the termination of the Alhama de Murcia sinistral fault zone. In parallel, a detailed study of the ductile and the ductile-brittle deformation was carried out in the footwall unit of the Filabres extensional shear zone, in the Nevado-Fílabride complex. Three main brittle events were recognised in the basin cover including two extensional events that occurred prior to a weak tectonic inversion of the basin during a third, still active event. The first one, D1b is characterized by the development a first stress regime consistent with ~NW-SE extensional tectonics. Besides, the consistency between the latest ductile and the brittle kinematics for the Filabres extensional shear zone and the activity of meso-scale fault systems that primarily control the main SW-NE depocentres allow concluding to a top-to-the-NW continuum of strain during the final exhumation of the Nevado-Filábride complex. The resulting overall half-graben architecture of the basins is then related to the combination of the formation of the metamorphic domes that added a local control superimposed on the regional deformation. Indeed, after a consistent top-to-the-west shearing prevailing during most of the Nevado-Filábride exhumation, final exhumation stages were in turn, characterised by important kinematics changes with a subordinate top-to-the-NW sense of shear (D1b). The onset of sedimentation in the basins occurred shortly after the crossing of the ductile-brittle transition in the underlying metamorphic domes at ca. 14 Ma into SW-NE fault-bounded troughs. Tectonic subsidence was then maintained during D2b while extensional kinematics changed to N-S or even locally to SSW-NNE. Extensional tectonics then lasted most of the Tortonian during the final tectonic denudation increments of the Sierra de los Filabres achieved at ca. 9-8 Ma. Intramontane basins are therefore genuinely extensional and clearly related to the latest exhumation stages of the Nevado-Filábride complex in the back-arc domain. Conversely, at ca. 8 Ma, basins started to record a ~N-S to NNW-SSE compressional stress regime (D3b) and ceased to be active depocentres while shortening within the Internal zones then recorded only the Iberia/Africa convergence. The weak inversion of the basins however resulted either in the reactivation of originally extensional faults such as the Alhama de Murcia fault or the basin individualisation and a progressive water exchange reduction with the Atlantic ocean and is thus proposed to be directly responsible for the Late Miocene salinity crises.

Abstract:
This article considers one of the cases of embodiment of the Boldinsky myth in the Leningrad underground of 1970s. The object of research attention is the poem «Boldinsky Reflections» of Sergey Stratanovsky. The author of the article believes that the given text goes back to N.A. Berdjaev's hypothesis about possible meeting of A.S. Pushkin and Serafim Sarovsky in 1830. The author of research reveals the central conflict of Russian culture - opposition of the secular and spiritual power. Opposition of heroes is strengthened thanks to three latent plots: literary (Walsingham and the Priest), biographic (A.S. Pushkin and metropolitan Filaret), metaliterary (Benedict Sarnov and Vadim Kozhinov). Such structure of the text allows us to speak about the presence of an archetypical plot for Russia, which organizes the paradigm of Russian culture. The author has found out the latent citation from Marcus Aurelius' "Reflections", which allows us, on the one hand, to consider Boldinsky Reflections in a philosophical context and, on the other hand, to speak about the opposition between Russian and European culture.

The anti-infective potentials of the natural products are very well known for centuries and are a part of traditional healing. The foremost therapeutic classes include flavones, isoflavones, flavonols, flavanones, flavanols, proanthocyanidins, anthocyanidins, chalcones, and aurones. The chalcone or 1,3-diphenyl-2E-propene-1-one represents the class of natural products which are comprised of benzylideneacetophenone function; i.e. two aromatic moieties linked together by an α, β-unsaturated carbonyl bridge comprising three-carbons. At present, chalcone is one of the privileged scaffolds that can be synthesized in the laboratory to derive different pharmacologically active compounds. This article is the continued form of the previously published work on anti-infective perspectives of chalcones (highlighted till 2015). The current work emphasizes on the discovery process of the chalcone in the period of 2016 to 2017 on malaria, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, filaria, tuberculosis, netamodes, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), and miscellaneous conditions. This review comprehensively focuses on the latest progress related with the anti-infective chalcones. The content includes the crucial structural features of chalcone scaffold including structure-activity relationship(s) along with their plausible mechanism of action(s) from the duration Jan 2016 to Dec 2017. This literature will be of prime interest to medicinal chemists in getting ideas and concepts for better rational development of potential anti-infective inhibitors.

Abstract:
Background: Retained medullary cord (RMC) is a newly defined entity believed to originate from the late arrest of secondary neurulation. Some RMCs contain varying amounts of lipomatous tissues, which need to be differentiated from spinal lipomas, such as filar and caudal lipomas (terminal lipomas). Case Description: We surgically treated two patients with a nonfunctional cord-like structure (C-LS) that was continuous from the cord and extended to the dural cul-de-sac, and ran parallel to the terminal lipoma. In both cases, untethering surgery was performed by resecting the C-LS with lipoma as a column, under intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. Histopathological examination confirmed that the central canal-like ependyma-lined lumen with surrounding neuroglial and fibrocollagenous tissues, which is the central histopathological feature of an RMC, was located on the unilateral side of the resected column, while the fibroadipose tissues of the lipoma were located on the contralateral side. Conclusion: Our findings support the idea proposed by Pang et al. that entities such as RMC and terminal lipomas are members of a continuum of regression failure occurring during late secondary neurulation, and the coexistence of RMC and terminal lipoma is not a surprising finding. Therefore, it may be difficult in clinical practice to make a distinct diagnosis between these two entities.

Abstract:
SummaryDirofilaria immitis, the agent of canine dirofilariosis, is a common parasite of domestic and wild carnivores with zoonotic potential and worldwide distribution, being endemic in many countries. Bulgaria is among European countries recognized as endemic for this heartworm parasite. In the present study, D. immitis adults recovered from pulmonary arteries of domestic dog and golden jackal originating from the Pazardzhik region in southern Bulgaria, and from red fox originating from the Plovdiv region in central-southern Bulgaria, were genetically analyzed in nuclear targets. The first PCR amplification of the internal transcribed region 2 (ITS2) of the ribosomal DNA with previously published D. immitis-specific primers yielded single fragments in size of 302 bp that is characteristic for these heartworms. PCR products of three isolates, resulted from the second amplification of the 5.8S-ITS2 region (235 bp) with pan-filarioid primers, were subjected to direct DNA sequencing. Identical nucleotide composition was detected across the screened target region for these Bulgarian isolates. When the 5.8S-ITS2 sequences were phylogenetically compared to the GenBank-retrieved D. immitis sequences in a worldwide context, the neighbor-joining analysis has shown three discrete clades. The first clade was composed of D. immitis isolates from Europe (including the studied Bulgarian samples), Asia and South America, in the second clade samples from Asia and South America were placed, whereas the third clade was formed by two Brazilian dog isolates originated from the north and southeast part of the country. The purpose of the present study was to verify the taxonomic characterization of D. immitis nematodes from Bulgaria based on morphology and compare their genetic structure with filariae obtained from the different world regions using molecular assays. It also summarizes previous epidemiological and ecological studies on the parasite distribution and prevalences in different hosts and regions undertaken so far in Bulgaria.

Abstract:
Introduction. The meaning of the Holy Saturday is a transition from Passion week to the Easter, from the greatest grief to jubilation, from death to life. It focuses different ontological extremities in a single point: death of the Immortal and resurrection of mortal body. This engenders maximal concentration of liturgical events, exceptional saturation of the services, revealing ample hymnographic material, diversity of stylistics, ways of incarnating of different senses, approaches to the events happening. One of the most interesting chants of the Passion Cycle is “Ne riday Mene, Mati” (“Do not mourn Me, Mother”), with its wonderful poetics, profound images and lapidary structure. Vividness and theological deepness of this chant provide inexhaustible material for research. Theoretical Background. In modern theological literature “Ne riday Mene, Mati” is mention in the context of special traits of the Holy Saturday services (I. Karabinova (1910), A. Kashkin (2010), M. Krasovitskaya (2014), G. Shimanskiy (2002) etc. It was characterised in more details in the researches on the Byzantine singers, among them the most important are works by archbishop Filaret (Gumilevskiy) and nun Ignatia (Puzik). Describing the personality and works of St. Kosma Mayumski, archbishop Filaret notes concentration of his style. Nun Ignatia studies images of this author’s works, their foundation in creed, links with dogmas of the Church; stresses features of poetics as well as dissects canons for Epiphany and Christmas. She pays special attention to the canons dedicated to Holy Mother, and she mentions “Ne riday Mene, Mati” as one of the most touching work by St. Kosma. Unfortunately, detailed analysis doesn’t follow this statement, that makes given paper relevant. Objective of this article is to study location of chant “Ne riday Mene, Mati” in service, specifics of its content, influence on later hymnography and iconography. Methods. Given that this research addresses theology, corresponding terminological system has been used, including special concepts as well as Church Slavonic words and expressions. Results. “Ne riday Mene, Mati” is an irmos of the ninth chant of the canon sung at the morning service on the Holy Saturday and devoted to suffering and death of Jesus Christ, interpreted as a culmination of the salvation of humanity. It has a distinctive feature of personal appeal of the Son to the Mother, answering her grief and closing a dialogical form in a spacetime of the whole service and Passion week, defining specifics of the poetics of its services. Several levels of content can be defined in a chant: 1) personal, describing relations between the Mother and the Son; 2) soteriological, revealing Lord’s plan of the salvation of humanity; 3) dogmatic, presenting dogmas of Christ and Holy Mother; 4) celebratory, establishing praise of the Mother of God. The structure of the irmos is defined by a triad thesis – antithesis – synthesis. Thesis is imperative expression (addressing “Ne riday Mene, Mati”), antithesis is justification of this reaction (“zrjashhi vo grobe, Ego zhe rodila esi Syna”). Not only does the synthesis resolve appearing contradiction, but also transfers the relations between the Son and the Mother into sphere of God-man relations. In this context the initial imperative can be understood as a demand for silence and tranquillity of soul, for absolute concentration in the situation of the contact with Godly essence. The same demand is situated in one of the crucial moments of liturgy of the Holy Saturday, in the time of The Great Entrance: “Da molchit vsjakaja plot chelovecha”. For the second time “Ne riday Mene, Mati” is sung in the final part of Eucharistic canon of the liturgy. In this context it brings out completely different facet, reincarnation of the God in a human through Resurrection. Thus, due to changes of context and place in the service, “Ne riday Mene, Mati” undergoes modulation of meaning. For the third and last time, “Ne riday…” appears in the Eastern Midnight office, that is a threshold between the Holy Saturday and The Easter, accompanying appearance of the shroud with the image of Jesus Christ. Thus, “Ne riday…” ends all the Passion cycle of the service. The profoundness of the images and dogmas as well as structure exceptionality of “Ne riday Mene, Mati” is reflected in later hymnography. Irmoses of the canons sung on Eves of Epiphany and Christmas are constituted in a way, similar to irmoses of the Holy Saturday. They preserve images, poetic devices, genre traits (irmos of the canon), glas (voice), usage of acrostic, thesis – antithesis – synthesis principle of composition. Besides for hymnography, “Ne riday Mene, Mati” influenced iconography of the stated image. All the most vital aspects of it have found their incarnation in iconography: Birth from the Virgin (iconography “Eleusa”), Crucifixion (the Cross, pierced rib), death and burial (crossed hands, closed eyes of Christ, stone tomb), Resurrection, appeal to the Mother (leaning of the Saviour’s head) as a sign of a dialogue; and every aspect from the abovementioned is a separate edge of multidimensional meaning of the Holy Saturday. Conclusions. Through analysis specifics of content and composition of “Ne riday Mene, Mati” is revealed. Dialogue is defined as a crucial principle, causing peculiar poetics of this chant and all the services of the Holy Saturday. Role of silence as one of the factors of the reception of the content is stated. Logical principle of structure thesis – antithesis – synthesis is brought out. Connections are drawn between this chant and its “podobnas” in texts of Menaion and Octoechos. Perspective of the further research lies in studying of dialogue in service of the Holy Saturday on micro- and macrolevels. Specifics of influence of chants on the iconography seems to be worthy of attention.

Abstract:
The study of indirect translations (IT) into Ukrainian, viewed from a psycholinguistic perspective, will contribute to a better understanding of Soviet national policies and the post-Soviet linguistic and cultural condition. The paper pioneers a discussion of the strategies and types of IT via Russian in the domains of literature and religion. In many cases the corresponding Russian translation, which serves as a source text for the Ukrainian one, cannot be established with confidence, and the “sticking-out ears” of Russian mediation may only be monitored at the level of sentence structure, when Russian wording underlies the Ukrainian text and distorts its natural fluency. The discussion substantiates the strategies and singles out the types of IT, in particular, (1) Soviet lower-quality retranslations of the recent, and mostly high-quality, translations of literary classics, which deliberately imitated lexical, grammatical, and stylistic patterns of the Russian language (became massive in scope in the mid1930s); (2) the translation-from-crib type, or translations via the Russian interlinear version, which have been especially common in poetry after WWII, from the languages of the USSR nationalities and the socialist camp countries; (3) overt relayed translations, based on the published and intended for the audience Russian translations that can be clearly defined as the source texts for the IT into Ukrainian; this phenomenon may be best illustrated with Patriarch Filaret Version of the Holy Scripture, translated from the Russian Synodal Bible (the translation started in the early 1970s); and, finally, (4) later Soviet (from the mid1950s) and post-Soviet (during Independence period) hidden relayed translations of literary works, which have been declared as direct ones but in fact appeared in print shortly after the publication of the respective works in Russian translation and mirrored Russian lexical and stylistic patterns. Abstract:
Abstract Background Pulmonary manifestations are regularly reported in both human and animal filariasis. In human filariasis, the main known lung manifestations are the tropical pulmonary eosinophilia syndrome. Its duration and severity are correlated with the presence of microfilariae. Litomosoides sigmodontis is a filarial parasite residing in the pleural cavity of rodents. This model is widely used to understand the immune mechanisms that are established during infection and for the screening of therapeutic molecules. Some pulmonary manifestations during the patent phase of infection with L. sigmodontis have been described in different rodent hosts more or less permissive to infection. Methods Here, the permissive Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) was infected with L. sigmodontis. Prevalence and density of microfilariae and adult parasites were evaluated. Lungs were analyzed for pathological signatures using immunohistochemistry and 3D imaging techniques (two-photon and light sheet microscopy). Results Microfilaremia in gerbils was correlated with parasite load, as amicrofilaremic individuals had fewer parasites in their pleural cavities. Fibrotic polypoid structures were observed on both pleurae of infected gerbils. Polyps were of variable size and developed from the visceral mesothelium over the entire pleura. The larger polyps were vascularized and strongly infiltrated by immune cells such as eosinophils, macrophages or lymphocytes. The formation of these structures was induced by the presence of adult filariae since small and rare polyps were observed before patency, but they were exacerbated by the presence of gravid females and microfilariae. Conclusions Altogether, these data emphasize the role of host-specific factors in the pathogenesis of filarial infections.

Abstract:
The main objective of the "PRANDTL-D" project is to obtain the stability and control derivative yawing moment due to aileron deflection, Cnδa. The sign of Cnδa determines whether the "PRANDTL-D" aircraft experienced proverse or adverse yaw during flight. Proverse yaw, the desirable outcome, occurs when the aircraft yaws in the same direction as the turn due to a novel wing twist and bell-shaped lift distribution. Accurate moments of inertia are essential in order to create a dynamic model of the aircraft and compute the stability and control derivatives, including Cnδa. The robustness of the aircraft simulation also depends on the uncertainty of the mass properties. To obtain the moments of inertia, the aircraft will be hung from two filars and rotated in a bifilar pendulum test. A wireless inertial measurement unit will be used to capture the rotation rate data during testing. This data will be used in a bifilar pendulum simulation to analyze the data and obtain the experimental values. For the tests, our team used Pro Engineer to predict the moments of inertia, designed the test structure and specific testing procedures, and created a Simulink model of the bifilar pendulum test.Â

Abstract:
Abstract Background Nematodes have evolved to survive in diverse ecological niches and can be a serious burden on agricultural economy, veterinary medicine, and public health. Antioxidant enzymes in parasitic nematodes play a critical role in defending against host oxidative stress. However, the features of the evolution of antioxidant enzymes in the phylum Nematoda remain elusive. Results Here, we systematically investigated the evolution and gene expression of antioxidant enzymes in the genomes of 59 nematodes and transcriptomes of 20 nematodes. Catalase has been independently lost in several orders, suggesting that it is unnecessary for some nematodes. Unlike in mammals, phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase is widely distributed in nematodes, among which it has evolved independently. We found that superoxide dismutase (SOD) has been present throughout nematode evolutionary process, and the extracellular isoform (SOD3) is diverged from the corresponding enzyme in mammals and has undergone duplication and differentiation in several nematodes. Moreover, the evolution of intracellular and extracellular SOD isoforms in filaria strongly indicates that extracellular SOD3 originated from intracellular SOD1 and underwent rapid evolution to form the diversity of extracellular SOD3. We identify a novel putative metal-independent extracellular SOD presenting independently in Steinernema and Strongyloididae lineage that featured a high expression level in Strongyloides larvae. Sequence divergence of SOD3 between parasitic nematodes and their closest free-living nematode, the specifically high expression in the parasitic female stage, and presence in excretory-secretory proteome of Strongyloides suggest that SOD3 may be related with parasitism. Conclusions This study advances our understanding of the complex evolution of antioxidant enzymes across Nematoda and provides targets for controlling parasitic nematode diseases.
