Identifying and discovering core activities and information flow is a crucial step that can facilitate the analysis. This is the question we are addressing—that is, to identify the core services as a common core substructure despite the probabilistic nature and the diversity of its activities. Abstract:
This chapter focuses on a specific, simple strategy to foster active blended learning, a pedagogical approach that values flexibility. The author discusses the use of optional learning activities (OLAs) in graduate courses as a strategy to enable the customisation of the learning pathway and the effective incorporation of formative assessment. A sample of 68 former Master's and doctoral students, who engaged with OLAs, answered an online survey. Their views were predominantly positive. Participants agreed that OLAs promote active, personalised learning, and considered them motivating. Moreover, the number of OLAs completed positively and significantly correlated with final grades. OLAs represent a simple, low-investment way to create engaging, personalised courses. These activities empower students to explore their own interests in a structured, meaningful way. Recommendations for practice are described.

Abstract:
It is widely recognized that learners are empowered by interacting with peers on relevant, content-related matters, and are encouraged to feel involved in their own educational process. In order to really support learning, however, interactions need to be structured and organized by means of some suitable pedagogical approach. In this chapter, the author argues that narratives (in the form of both fictional stories and narrations of experiences related to the object of study) can provide a pedagogical framework suitable to exploit the educational potential of interactions. The narrative is an expressive form which is natural and familiar to both children and adults and validly supports meaning-making as well as personal engagement. Moreover, it is an inherently social activity, which makes it particularly suitable to support collaborative activities. This chapter analyzes several examples of narrative activities carried out in different collaborative contexts in order to exemplify how they can be organized to efficaciously support learner interaction.

Abstract:
This chapter advocates the idea that the structuring techniques generally used to support students in online collaborative activities can be described in terms of three main dimensions, that we call the “three Ts”: Task, Teams and Time. The chapter presents an explorative study, aiming to investigate the differences between the behavior of three groups of students performing activities based on three techniques which differ as to the levels of structuredness of Task, Teams and Time. While the first group was not given instructions on how to structure the work, the second group was given some hints about the need to use some kind of structure and the third group had precise instructions as to how to proceed along the Task, Teams and Time dimensions. The chapter presents the authors’ reflections about the effects of these techniques based on qualitative analysis of students’ reactions to the way the three activities were structured.

This chapter examines the concept of collaborative learning and its theoretical and practical foundations. Collaborativelearning takes place in a structured social situation where agroup of students work as a team to assist each other with learning tasks. The instructional strategies encourage student to student interactions. Drawing on group workskills, collaborative learning has been demonstrated to be effective in a variety of learning situations. Development of a variety of Internet technologies such as communication tools, emails, discussion forums, video and audio tools together with webcasting allow collaborative teachingstrategies to be used creatively in online learning. The authors have trialed the use of various technologies in the human services and several case examples of onlinecollaborative learning are provided. These case studies cover activities such as supervision and controversial issues in social work ethics. Abstract:
This paper describes ongoing progress in facilitating entrepreneurially minded learning through modifications to an existing senior/graduate level mechatronic design course. The semester-long design experience incorporates a prompted real-world problem intended to motivate the design and construction of a fully autonomous robotic vehicle. Introductory lectures and structured laboratory exercises are provided during the first half of the semester, while the remaining half-semester is allocated to team-based robot design and fabrication. Existing problem-based learning activities have been alter

Abstract Today, the Dismantle, Inspection, and Failure Analysis (DIFA) process for electrical submersible pump (ESP) failure analysis is a tedious, human-intensive, and time-consuming activity. The activity involves a set of data and various information formats from several activities in the ESP operation lifecycle. This paper proposes a novel artificial intelligence workflow to improve the efficiency of the DIFA process using an ensemble of machine learning (ML) algorithms. This ensemble of algorithms brings together structured/unstructured data across equipment, production, operations, and f

Through the critical analysis of some case studies, this paper intends to investigate different tools useful to the ecological education,to analyse didactic activities which have more influence in the development of an individual and collective awareness and which of them can get closer students to the systemic approach. The systemic design is one of many actors that takes place inside a well-structured social network that presents always more frequently complex problems, which are difficult to solve by the application of linear approach. Supporting students in the transition from secondary school to university is an important action to be taken in order to increase the number of people with tertiary education degrees; it has positive consequences on the citizens’ working perspective and on the national economic growth. To this purpose, in the academic year 2014/2015 the University of Turin started the Project Orient@mente, a platform of self-paced open online courses aimed to guide students in the choice of a scientific university program. In Kenya, student performance in sciences and Mathematics is still low compared to artoriented disciplines. The poor performance has affected not only the Girl child’s interest in these disciplines but also the number of girls that take STEM-oriented programs at tertiary levels. Several mitigating measures have been enacted although the situation has not changed much. This paper reports a study that explored contextual enablers and hindrances of Girl Child participation in STEM education in a Western Kenyan county. Student retention and attrition rates have been established as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for course teams in the Higher Education landscape in the UK. Against this quantified (and neoliberal) auditable undertaking, in this paper we offer an examination of a set of alternative qualitative efforts which are intended to improve the first year student experience by helping students transition into their course, and university life more generally. Working with students to enhance the first year experience is at the centre of our ontological position and we draw heavily on the idea of a “lon
