Full textBackground: Patients sleep in the intensive care units (ICU) is fragmented. There is a need for a daytime rest, quiet time, to help the patient heal and recover from critical illness. Sleep deprivation and lack of rest might lead to difficulties of extubation, prolonged healing of wounds and it may result in prolonged stay in the ICU. A quiet time is a period during the day, where the goal is patient rest, without any unnecessary interruptions. There are promotional actions that can be used to make the patients’ rest as good as possible. Aim: The aim of this study is to observe the structured daytime rest in ICU, with the help of four questions. Method: This study is done at two ICU’s in Sweden, which has generated 41 observations. The design is a prospective quantitative observational study with descriptive and analytic statistics. Result: The result shows that the promotional actions observed aren’t used to the full extention. The daytime rest is interrupted, amongst other things, by conversations in the IC-room and from alarms of the surveillance equipment. The daytime rest is disturbed 25 times in mean, and the longest coherent rest fort the patient is ten minutes in mean. The top number for disturbances during the daytime rest is 67 times. The longest coherent rest was 48 minutes and the shortest rest three minutes. Conclusion: The daytime rest is frequently being disturbed in spite of there being a structured daytime rest protocol. This leads to that the possibility for a rest to recover is to short to do so, which can lead to a prolonged stay at the ICU.

Full textAmbulance personnel (specialist nurses and paramedics) are expected to self-manage the risk of both physical and mental strain while performing safe patient care. It is mainly physical strain that can lead to musculoskeletal disorders among ambulance personnel. These musculoskeletal disorders can result in work-related repetitive strain injuries in the neck, shoulders, lower back and knees. The aim of the study was to investigate how regular structured physical activity can positively impact ambulance personnel. The study was conducted with qualitative design and with an inductive approach where six male informants were interviewed. The conducted analysis process resulted in three distinct categories; self-perceived health benefits, safer caretaking and injury prevention. All respondents reported that they experienced improved stamina, sleep and faster recovery. Also, they experienced less musculoskeletal problems than prior to undertaking regular physical activity. Furthermore, the informants felt that regular physical activity as such, had an indirect influence on patient safety.

Full textBackground: Running is a popular form of exercise around the world. Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries in runners. Several different conservative treatment methods have been studied, but evidence is limited and not sufficient enough to support a specific treatment method. Objective: To describe through a structured literature review the conservative treatment methods studied on runners with ITBS and the effect these treatment methods have on pain. Method: A search to identify relevant articles was carried out in the PubMed, Cinahl, Scoupus and Web of Science databases. The search terms used were iliotibial band syndrome, iliotibial band friction syndrome and iliotibial band strain. A screening of titles and abstracts was made. Potentially relevant articles were obtained in full text, and then a relevance assessment was performed. The methodological quality of the included articles was examined. An ethical review was conducted on all included articles. Results: Four randomized controlled trials and two cohort studies were included. The interventions studied in the articles were correction of the supposed aetiological factors for running related injuries, anti-inflammatory / analgesic drugs, deep transverse friction massage, hip strengthening rehabilitation program, corticosteroid injection and shockwave treatment compared to manual therapy. Many of the interventions reduced pain, however, to varying degrees. In two of the studies there was no significant difference in decrease of pain between intervention and control group. The articles had varied methodological quality. Conclusion: Although ITBS is common in runners, relatively few studies have investigated it’s conservative treatment methods. Several of the studies indicated positive results in the form of pain reduction but there are difficulties in drawing conclusions about effect from the treatment methods due to methodological weaknesses.
