Full textBackground: Patients sleep in the intensive care units (ICU) is fragmented. There is a need for a daytime rest, quiet time, to help the patient heal and recover from critical illness. Sleep deprivation and lack of rest might lead to difficulties of extubation, prolonged healing of wounds and it may result in prolonged stay in the ICU. A quiet time is a period during the day, where the goal is patient rest, without any unnecessary interruptions. There are promotional actions that can be used to make the patients’ rest as good as possible. Aim: The aim of this study is to observe the structured daytime rest in ICU, with the help of four questions. Method: This study is done at two ICU’s in Sweden, which has generated 41 observations. The design is a prospective quantitative observational study with descriptive and analytic statistics. Result: The result shows that the promotional actions observed aren’t used to the full extention. The daytime rest is interrupted, amongst other things, by conversations in the IC-room and from alarms of the surveillance equipment. The daytime rest is disturbed 25 times in mean, and the longest coherent rest fort the patient is ten minutes in mean. The top number for disturbances during the daytime rest is 67 times. The longest coherent rest was 48 minutes and the shortest rest three minutes. Conclusion: The daytime rest is frequently being disturbed in spite of there being a structured daytime rest protocol. This leads to that the possibility for a rest to recover is to short to do so, which can lead to a prolonged stay at the ICU.

Full textAmbulance personnel (specialist nurses and paramedics) are expected to self-manage the risk of both physical and mental strain while performing safe patient care. It is mainly physical strain that can lead to musculoskeletal disorders among ambulance personnel. These musculoskeletal disorders can result in work-related repetitive strain injuries in the neck, shoulders, lower back and knees. The aim of the study was to investigate how regular structured physical activity can positively impact ambulance personnel. The study was conducted with qualitative design and with an inductive approach where six male informants were interviewed. The conducted analysis process resulted in three distinct categories; self-perceived health benefits, safer caretaking and injury prevention. All respondents reported that they experienced improved stamina, sleep and faster recovery. Also, they experienced less musculoskeletal problems than prior to undertaking regular physical activity. Furthermore, the informants felt that regular physical activity as such, had an indirect influence on patient safety.

Full textBackground: Running is a popular form of exercise around the world. Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries in runners. Several different conservative treatment methods have been studied, but evidence is limited and not sufficient enough to support a specific treatment method. Objective: To describe through a structured literature review the conservative treatment methods studied on runners with ITBS and the effect these treatment methods have on pain. Method: A search to identify relevant articles was carried out in the PubMed, Cinahl, Scoupus and Web of Science databases. The search terms used were iliotibial band syndrome, iliotibial band friction syndrome and iliotibial band strain. A screening of titles and abstracts was made. Potentially relevant articles were obtained in full text, and then a relevance assessment was performed. The methodological quality of the included articles was examined. An ethical review was conducted on all included articles. Results: Four randomized controlled trials and two cohort studies were included. The interventions studied in the articles were correction of the supposed aetiological factors for running related injuries, anti-inflammatory / analgesic drugs, deep transverse friction massage, hip strengthening rehabilitation program, corticosteroid injection and shockwave treatment compared to manual therapy. Many of the interventions reduced pain, however, to varying degrees. In two of the studies there was no significant difference in decrease of pain between intervention and control group. The articles had varied methodological quality. Conclusion: Although ITBS is common in runners, relatively few studies have investigated it’s conservative treatment methods. Several of the studies indicated positive results in the form of pain reduction but there are difficulties in drawing conclusions about effect from the treatment methods due to methodological weaknesses.

Full textThis study examines how New Public Management (NPM) affects the opportunity of social advisors to work professionally and how they deal with its influence. The study's methodological approach is qualitative. The empirical data are based on five semi-structured interviews with Swedish social advisors. The theoretical framework consists of theories about NPM, professionalism and action strategies. The results section of the study depicts the interviewees definition of professional-ism. This definition is later related to how they perceive that NPM affects their ability to work professionally. The results indicate that the organizations overall objectives to meet the budget and achieve cost efficiency leads to a conflict with the social advisors' views on professional work. This conflict limits the social ad-visors ability to work in accordance with their training, professional experience or from a client’s point of view. The limitations also include: A heavy administrative workload, micro-management from the management level, and a requirement to use standardized and measurable methods. In summary, these limitations make sure that the organization's definition of professionalism sets the framework for how social advisors should do their work. Social advisors deal with this conflict by protesting in various ways. In some cases, when the social advisors experience the conflict as especially severe they choose to leave the organization. Keywords: action strategies, New Public Management, occupational professionalism, organizational professionalism, professionalism, social adviser

Full textIntroduction: Public health work aims to promote health and prevent physical, mental and social ill-health through initiatives conducted at the population level. Health-promoting workplaces are a broad concept that is encompassed by several components such as strategic management, governing documents, organizational culture and leadership. Employees in the care professions run a significant risk of suffering from work-related ill health that leads to sickness that can lead to absence from work, compared with other occupational groups. The workplace is an important arena for prevention and health promotion initiatives that aim to strengthen workers' health. Aim: The literature study aimed to explore the concept of health-promoting workplaces from the perspective of healthcare employees. Method: A structured literature study consisting of 13 scientific articles retrieved from the databases PubMed and CINAHL. The articles are qualitative and quantitative which were reviewed and analyzed through systematic text condensation. The material was organized and structured to determine the themes that make up the study result. Results: Five themes are presented in the results which are leadership, social support, participation control. Conclusion: The results showed the importance of a good work environment to change work-related ill health among healthcare professionals. It is important that healthcare organizations offer a god psychosocial work environment where the organization takes advantage of the resources available in the workplace. Workplaces in healthcare organizations that promote workers' health through a safe work environment are favorable for both employees, caretakers and patients which demands a well-functioning organization.

Full textIntroduction: Breastfeeding provides great health benefits for both mothers and infants.Sweden supports the World Health Organisation’s recommendation to breastfeed exclusively for up to 6 months. Breastfeeding is low despite all the positive health effects of breastfeeding. Multiple socio economic factors affect breastfeeding. Aim The purpose of this study is to identify factors associated with maternal education and nursing behaviours, including length of nursing, and frequency of nursing Method Structured literature study with qualitative approach where 10 scientific articles were analyzed through thematic analysis. Results Four main themes emerged in the results, " Social factors related to mothers' education levels that affect breastfeeding frequency”, "Relationship between breastfeeding time and education level", “The intention to breastfeed is linked to the level of education" and "Support programs, efforts and parent training promote breastfeeding". These themes identified differences in the relationship between educational level in mothers and various factors that were important for breastfeeding. Conclusion: Breastfeeding frequency is affected by mothers' level of education, low educated mothers breastfeed less and higher educated mothers breastfeed to a greater extent. Current literature and research on breastfeeding show that there is knowledge about all the health benefits of breastfeeding and which factors affect the breastfeeding rate in a positive direction. Nevertheless, breastfeeding frequency is very low and does not reach the level of exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months as stated in the recommendations on breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be given greater importance 4 beginning with pregnancy beginning with pregnancy, with a greater focus on more educational opportunities around th a greater focus on more educational opportunities around breastfeeding both for healthcare staff and parents in order to prevent inequalities in health.

Full textA starting point for the present thesis is the increased application of the project work form, a form that has been growing in usage since the mid 1900s. Today, multiproject environments have become increasingly common, i.e. organisations where projects are a normal part of the working environment and where they are of such great importance that project management and project steering (e.g. evaluation and follow-up) are considered important for the organisation's management. In many organisations where the ability to apply the project work form is critical for survival and profitability, there is a great need to improve the management of projects. The dominating view has long been that all projects are inherently alike, and can be effectively managed and controlled with standardised project management techniques and models. However, more and morere searchers are pointing out that because there are in fact quite distinct differences between different types of projects, project management must be adapted to the distinctive characteristics of the project, which presupposes the possibility of analysing the project in question – of being able to make a "project diagnosis". In an attempt to increase knowledge about projects as a type of work form, this doctoral study aims to develop descriptions of distinctive characteristics in projects that are essential for project management in multiproject environments. Three case studies have been performed in three organisations that have developed and implemented a project model to improve their project management. The case studies have been performed using action research methodology. This has made it possible to study project management during an extended period of time, creating nuanced descriptions of the distinctive characteristics in each multiproject environment. From the case studies, project research and personal experience in project environments, a framework for Structured Project Analysis (SPA) has been designed with the aim of increasing the generalisation of the results. The framework, based on three analysis models and three basic perspectives of projects, provides a conceptual model for structured project analysis independent of the case studies. The study shows how the various distinctive characteristics of different project types, such as the presence of dual operational logics and varying types of complexity, are crucial for both management of projects and for deciding which improvement measures are most effective in a multiproject environment. A further contribution of the study is the framework that has been designed based on the wide variation presented by different projects through a results perspective.

Full textSpecial education and abilitygrouping in mathematics have not shown a great effect (Bentley & Bentley, 2011; Giota & Emanuelsson, 2011) and our Education Act (2010:800) argues that students should be taught in the frame of the class. The study was based on this knowledge, which was conducted with 21 students in their second year for nineteen lessons. The aim was to see if intensive teaching has any effect on students´ procedural fluency of counting addition and subtraction within the numberrange 0-20. The study was conducted as an experimental design of fieldexperiments and the methods in the study were participant observation, fieldnotes and diagnoses. The observation and the fieldnotes show an example of how structured intensive teaching can be planned and the results of the diagnoses indicate that structured intensive teaching in aritmetic in an inclusive perspective has a positive effect on students´ procedural fluency.

Full textIntroduction: Alcohol consumption contributes to many diseases and generates a considerable annual death toll, both domestically and globally. Studies show that alcohol consumption occurs frequently at the workplace, but existing research about strategies to reduce harmful alcohol consumption are limited and insufficient. Alcohol problems do not only affect the health and safety of the workers, but also affect the worksite and the community as a whole. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the effects of various interventions regarding problematic alcohol consumption in the workplace and which factors that may have an impact on the effects. Methods: The study design is a structured literature review, where searches in different databases resulted in 20 articles. The articles were reviewed and analyzed systematically through a content analysis. Results: Four overall themes could be obtained from meaning units. Several interventions showed positive results regarding reduced alcohol consumption and/or altered perceptions on alcohol. Factors regarding gender, age, consumption level and attitudes were particularly prominent. Managers and the occupational health service were also important for changes in alcohol consumption. Several problems emerged, which included challenges on implementation, recruitment of participants and generalization. Conclusion: The effects of interventions are influenced by several different factors which should be considered. Challenges exist, which may require organizational and political standpoints for future development.

Full textBackground: Earlier research show that invasive ventilation has been uncomfortable for the patients. Therefore the patients have been deeply sedated. Routines have changed and the patients are nowadays often lightly sedated during invasive ventilation in the ICU. Light sedation results in positive physical effects. It's important to illuminate the patients' experiences by light sedation during invasive ventilation. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe lightly sedated patients experiences during invasive ventilation in the ICU. Method: A structured literature study with systematic data collection was implemented. 13 articles was included after quality control. The qualitative content were analyzed with data extraction. Result: The result were constituted by the following three main categories with subcategories: Experiences of the condition, Experiences of being seen and heard, and Experiences by yearning. The patients expressed both positive and negative experiences associated with light sedation. Experiences of powerlessness and lost dignity were central parts of the result. Nevertheless, the majority of patients wanted to be lightly sedated. Several areas of improvement emerged from the result based on the patients' experiences. Conclusion: The result can provide the ICU-nurse with increased knowledge about the patients experiences of care during improvement within the intensive care. Patients hospital stay could be facilitated by health-promoted actions and reduced risk of suffering in care. The authors believe that nurse-patient ratio 1:1 can provide increased patient-focused care. The literature study has also illustrated the existing research and ideas for further research.

Full textIntroduction Working with health promoting initiatives in the workplace is important for the wellbeing of public health (Folkhälsomyndigheten, 2021). As stress is used as an indicator to measure public health and since many people are on sick leave due to work-related stress, it is of public health relevance to investigate sustainable solutions for equal public health (Folkhälsomyndigheten, 2020; Försäkringskassan, 2016). Given that the workplace is an important arena for maintaining and promoting the health of the population (Naidoo & Wills, 2016), it is in the interest of the study to investigate health promoting factors using previous empirical material. The Aim The aim of the study is to describe, based on a structured literature study, which health promoting factors that can be successful to increase well-being in the workplace. Method The study was conducted through a structure literature review where ten articles were selected from the databases PubMed and CINAHL. The result from the articles have been further analyzed with thematic analysis. Results The results shows that eight health promotion factors that can contribute to a health-promoting work environment is: Balance, Confirmation, Commitment, Group feeling, Communication, Awareness, Resources, Cooperation, Social climate, and Support which also can be divided into three dimensions on individual, group, and leadership and organizational level. Conclusion There are health promoting factors that can be applied from a holistic perspective and thus affect the overall work culture in the workplace, which can have a positive impact on individuals' well-being.

Full textIntroduction: Nurses have a job with a heavy workload and a psychosocially demanding work environment, this generates in a increased risk of sick leave. Healthcare is the working group that is at the top of sick leave. Physical activity can help to prevent and strengthen nurses, but many do not reach the recommended level. Why don’t nurses achieve it? Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to conduct a broad literature study to investigate which factors affect nurses’ motivation, perceived barriers and facilitators to physical activity. Method: A systematic literature study was used where 10 articles were included, which was then analyzed with a thematic analysis. Results: The thematic analysis was generated in 4 themes: Work environment and physical activity, leisure time and physical activity, motivation and self-efficacy. Obstacles and opportunities were used as a sub-heading in each theme. Perceived barriers were most common and this included shift work, fatigue, family obligations and institutional barriers. The opportunities consisted of, among other things, perceived health benefits, social support and role models. Conclusion: Many barriers could be linked to the workplace, as many nurses do not have time in their spare time and hence a health promotion effort at the workplace could generate more nurses becoming physically active.

Full textEver since digital library catalogues were first introduced in the late sixties and early seventies, there have been two separate metadata repositories for libraries in Sweden. On the one hand there is the Libris catalogue, developed and used mainly by the national library and the university libraries, and on the other hand there is the Burk catalogue for the local public libraries. For almost as long, attempts have been made to create a single, national catalogue for all Swedish libraries, but despite all efforts, including several government bills explicitly stating that this need to happen, the dual catalogue system prevails to this day. This interview study aims to find the opinions of people from different sectors of the library field on this matter. Views on integrated library systems are also debated. There seems to be great consensus among the interviewees that there is, in fact, a problem with lack of coordination of catalogues, but there is less agreement as to what should be done about it, and by whom. The study is analyzed and contextualized utilizing the debate on digital copyright in general and the theories of Tarleton Gillespie in particular. It is concluded that cooperation would be facilitated if libraries made use of open data and open source, which would suggest Libris as metadata repository and open source library systems such as Koha for ILS. Libraries assigned with interlibrary coordination, i.e. the regional and the national libraries, would have to take on a greater responsibility than the local libraries to implement these cooperations. Vendors serving libraries would have to adjust their business models if these proposals were to become reality to offer data under open licenses.

Full textBackground: Diabetes is a growing threat to public health. Secondary diseases like footcomplications are common. Foot ulcers affect individual’s quality of life and are a great cost to society. Regular foot examination prevents foot ulcers and is a recommended intervention. Despite existing guidelines there are differences in the execution of the foot exam which causes care inequality. A structured foot exam form based on the guidelines was developed in a project. The aim was to facilitate the foot exam and contribute to a uniform execution. Aim: To assess health care workers experiences of working with a structured foot exam form for patients with diabetes Method: Qualitative content analysis based on Graneheim and Lundman. The study is part of a larger project entitled “Optimized care of persons with diabetes and foot complications” with Västra Götalands region as responsible authority. Semi structured interviews were held in a focus group and individually with eight informants of different professions who were interviewed regarding their experiences of working with the form in clinical practice. Results: Experiences of working with the form were that it simplified the foot exam by giving itan overview and clear structure. Using the form made apparent differences in work routines between individuals. It was believed that by implementing the form routinely that it would contribute to a more uniform execution. When the patient had foot ulcers the risk categories were perceived as contradictory. There was an uncertainty about the definition of for example chronic ulcers and callosities. The hope was that the future digital format would simplify documentation and elucidate the foot exam as well as contribute to accessibility for all concerned. Conclusion: The foot exam form works well as a support during the preventative foot exam, gives a basis for decision making and could contribute to a uniform, safer foot exam with more care equality that is consistent with the current guidelines.

This is often based on data which does not excist in companies with a high amount of manual labor and a low use of digital systems. Therefore this report studies how companies as the one previously mentioned should collect data. This is done as a case study at Elitfönster which is a leading window maker, who has a high degree of rework in their process which they aim to reduce. The result of the study is an instruction of how a data collection should be performed to generate relevant data to be able to improve. The study also investigates how root causes to waste are found through two different methods. The conclusion of this study is that the planning of a data collection is important to be able to get a good result. The company should also nominate a department that is responsible for the joint resources which causes problems in the production.

Full textIntroduction: Healthcare-related infections are a major problem in today's healthcare and one of the most common care related infections in the intensive care unit is catheter related. A central venous catheter (CVC) is a vascular access commonly found in intensive care units, and the maintenance is commonly performed by the nurses. The preventive work is therefore important in reducing the incidence of CVC-related infections and by that increasing the patient safety. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe what part of maintenance regarding the CVC performed by nurses in adult patients in the intensive care unit that reduces the risk of healthcare-related infections. Method: A structured literature study was conducted and studies with a quantitative design were compiled. The results were analyzed with an inductive content analysis. The number of articles included in the results were 18. Main results: The main results of the study were based on five themes which were preventive measures. The results were mechanical cleaning with disinfectants of needleless connectors and three-way stop cork, daily evaluation of the patients need for a CVC, chlorhexidine dressing, daily chlorhexidine baths and education of staff. These areas were seen to reduce the risk and incidence of CVC-related infections. Conclusion: It is important that there is a consensus of the guidelines regarding the preventions of CVC-related infections both locally and nationally. The guidelines should be based on the best available evidence to reduce CVC-related infections in the intensive care unit. The purpose is to perform equal care and to promote patient safety.

Full textIntroduction: Older adults often lack the skills and competence necessary to be able to use health resources and health information available online. To be able to get involved in digital health and search for health information online older adults are required to have a certain level of eHealth literacy. eHealth literacy is defined as the ability to seek, find, understand, and appraise health information from electronic sources and apply the knowledge gained to addressing or solving a health problem. Aim: The purpose of the literature review was to shed light on whether there is a relationship between eHealth literacy and health behaviors and health outcomes in older adults. Methods: The method used was a structured literature review. The method of analysis used was an inductive thematic analysis of 10 peer-reviewed journal articles. Results: The thematic analysis generated in 3 themes; Improved lifestyle, Commitment to self-care and eHealth literacy an intermediate factor to health behaviours and health-related quality of life. The results showed that an increased level of eHealth literacy in older adults improved their health behaviours, health decisions and health outcomes in terms of well-being and health-related quality of life. eHealth literacy had both a direct and an indirect effect on the outcomes studied. Conclusion: The results highlighted the importance of working health-promoting with the elderly's eHealth literacy to be able to strengthen their health and participation in their own healthcare. eHealth literacy is a key factor for the health of the elderly and for theme to be able to use the e-health services available to their full potential.

Full textBackground: The recent increased requirement in efficiency of healthcare has led to a situation where it is more common for patients of the opposite sex to share rooms. Aim: To explore male and female patients´ attitudes towards multi-bedded patient rooms. Method: Quantitative survey study with a total of 69 participating patients, whose mean age was 64 years, from two surgical wards. Results: The majority of patients had a positive view toward sharing a room with both several patients as well as patients of the opposite sex. However, women tended to be less tolerant of this than men. The women stood out even when it came to concerns about bodily exposure and concern about being exposed to infection. A majority of patients preferred that conversations with caregiver regarding their own care should be held in a private room. Conclusion: Results of the study showed that the majority of the two concerned wards patients were positive to share room, while the result also made areas in need of improvement visible. One example of such area could be patient involvement in care, especially regarding women who stood out as a particularly vulnerable group.

Full textAccording to Barclay (2001), behavioral interviews yield higher quality information, than other interview techniques. This study focused on whether the quality and quantity of information differ between structured interview and behavioral interviewing. Two headhunters held 16 job interviews with the two techniques, 9 behavioral interviews and 7 structured interviews. Both headhunters and candidates have evaluated the interviews quantitatively. Initial and concluding interviews have, as well, been held with the headhunters. No definitive answers were found in the quantitative analysis, but the qualitative results suggest that behavioral interviews give, because of the headhunters opinions, more and higher quality information. Continued development of the technique and themselves are the headhunters next steps in order to improve their recruitment process.
