Sedlmayr, Gerold. "Stuart Hall and Power." Universität Leipzig, 2018. https://ul.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A32266.

Abstract:
When thinking about Stuart Hall’s theoretical legacy, ‘power’ is probably not the first term that comes to mind. Concepts like representation, racism, ethnicity, encoding/decoding, articulation, conjunctural analysis etc. more readily suggest themselves and structure our reception of his work. Yet nonetheless, when taking a closer look, his entire oeuvre may be said to be permeated, on different levels, by themes that touch upon the issue of power, not least in connection with the concepts listed above. The latent omnipresence of power in Hall’s thinking is perhaps most readily detectable on the meta-level on which he situates and positions himself as a cultural-studies scholar, and it is this level that hence will be addressed first. In the second section, Hall’s view of power on the economic, social and state levels will be considered, particularly by pointing out his indebtedness to Antonio Gramsci’s conception of hegemonic power. In an attempt to let Hall speak for himself as much as possible, the section will provide quite a few quotes, many of which will be taken from the collaboratively written Policing the Crisis, in order to shed some light on his – and his co-authors’ – ideas about power. The third section attempts a systematisation of the issues raised, particularly by integrating a Foucauldian perspective on power, which was nearly as important for Hall as the Gramscian. The last section will conclude by returning to the beginning, reconsidering Hall’s self-positioning within the power/knowledge nexus that structures the discourse of cultural studies.

Cord, Florian. "Dirty, Messy Business: Stuart Hall, Politics and the Political." Universität Leipzig, 2018. https://ul.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A32267.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past decades, political theory and philosophy have seen the canonization of a new conceptual difference, whose roots have been traced back to a number of thinkers, but whose main theoretical elaboration can be said to have begun with the Centre de recherches philosophiques sur le politique founded by Jean-Luc Nancy and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe in 1980 and closed in 1984: the difference between la politique and le politique, or between ‘politics’ and ‘the political’. As Chantal Mouffe (2005a: 8f), borrowing Heidegger’s vocabulary, has pointed out, the two terms operate on different levels: whereas ‘politics’ refers to the ‘ontic’ level and designates the empirical ‘facts’ of political organization – practices, institutions, discourses, etc. – ‘the political’ implies a philosophical inquiry at the ‘ontological’ level, asking, as Lacoue-Labarthe and Nancy (1981: 12) put it, about the ‘essence of the political’. While, in theorists as diverse as Alain Badiou, Jacques Rancière, Slavoj Žižek, Claude Lefort, Roberto Esposito, Ernesto Laclau, and many others – most of them located on the political left – this inquiry has yielded very different results, they all agree on the basic necessity to make this distinction between conventional politics, on the one hand, and a more profound dimension concerning the institution of the social itself, on the other. Similarly, virtually all the thinkers mentioned are in agreement as to the state of the political in the contemporary world: they all see it as in danger of being ignored, repressed or neutralized in the context of what they criticize as increasingly ‘post-political’ and ‘post-democratic’ social arrangements. This critique of today’s post-politics is a powerful and important one. In the following, I want to argue that the work of Stuart Hall to some extent shares in – in fact, anticipates, since most of the relevant theories were developed after 1989 – this critical discourse. More specifically, I will 1) bring out and discuss Hall’s critique of post-politics; 2) elaborate upon his own understanding of the political, which is implicit in this critique and elsewhere in his writings – I will argue that Hall’s thought can be considered as belonging to what the sociologist Oliver Marchart (2010) has termed ‘the moment of the political’, insofar as it is a product of and response to our ‘post-foundational condition’, emphasizing as it does conflictuality, contingency and the groundlessness of society; 3) and finally, building on this, I will briefly talk about the conclusions concerning (ontic) politics that the post-foundationalism Hall shares with most of the other theorists I have mentioned leads him to, which are very different from those arrived at by philosophers such as Badiou, Rancière or Žižek and closer – partly via the shared engagement with Gramsci – to those of Mouffe and Laclau or Lefort.

Abstract:
When I first came across Stuart Hall’s engagement with Gramsci in his analysis of Margaret Thatcher’s struggle for power, I was excited by how much his theoretical framework provided new perspectives to reflect on my own experiences of social and political struggles. Here was somebody who analysed social change in its contradictory fluidity as something in the making. Not from ‘out there’, but as someone acting on it. It haunted me how valuable his approach was for understanding the unexpected outcomes and victories of social movements – not only for a better understanding of history and society, but also with a view to actively partaking in these movements and shape them. In this paper, I will demonstrate the strength of Hall’s approach for highlighting the chances of social movements to achieve their alternative goals although they fight from a position of weakness against powerful adversaries. I have been (and still am) an active part of the two movements I want to explore. First, I will discuss the success of the squatters and their allies in defending ‘their’ houses in Hamburg’s St. Pauli Hafenstraße, where I still live, in the 1980s and 90s, and, second, the current2 struggle of the refugee group ‘Lampedusa in Hamburg’ for the right to stay in Germany despite the ‘Dublin’ regulations which force refugees to stay in those countries where they first arrived. Both of these struggles had to engage with and counter stereotypical representations. Both of them, as I will show, started by addressing “immediate troubles” and led to a deeper understanding that another world is not only needed, but also possible – “an entirely new form of civilization” (Hall 1987: 21). Therefore, I think it is worthwhile to engage with them.

Abstract:
Amidst the countless and seminal contributions by Stuart Hall to discourses around race, representation, politics and identity, it is easy to overlook the equally countless essays about ‘minor’ fields in which he covered a broad range of related topics. One of these texts is an article about football hooliganism from 1978, entitled “The Treatment of ‘Football Hooliganism’ in the Press” from a volume edited by Hall and his colleagues Roger Ingham, John Clarke, Peter Marsh and Jim Donovan. The collection of essays is based on a conference held that previous year at the University of Southampton about football fans and violence, a topic that had become a major concern in the British public and that in consequence became a mainstay for research in the field of sociology. As this is Hall’s only text dealing with violence around football, the essay fills only a minor niche in his oeuvre. Within the field of hooligan studies, however, his contribution to the discipline is still seen as an important addition.

Abstract:
Stuart Hall, who passed away in February 2014, was one of the founding figures of what is known today as ‘cultural studies’ and long-time director of the renowned Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham. In addition, he was a central figure of the British New Left, founding editor of the journal New Left Review, and one of Britain’s most charismatic public intellectuals. Crucially, for Hall, intellectual practice was a politics, and questions of culture were political questions. His was a thinking that was inquisitive, flexible and open-ended, regularly moving across disciplinary boundaries and synthesising different theoretical outlooks. It was rigorously contextual, extremely attentive to complexity, dedicated to the concrete, activist, committed and practical, and driven by a curiosity that constantly led onto new – and frequently largely uncharted – theoretical terrain. The subjects covered by Hall’s work include topics as diverse as popular culture and mass media; representation and signifying practices; subcultures; questions of power, ideology and resistance; ‘race’ and ethnicity; globalisation; multiculturalism and diaspora; cultural and personal identity; Thatcherism; New Labour; and neoliberalism. The present issue of Coils of the Serpent endeavours to contribute to the timely exploration of the legacy of Stuart Hall’s highly influential and multi-faceted work.

Abstract:
In his review of John Akomfrah’s experimental documentary The Stuart Hall Project (2013), Adam Elliott-Cooper highlights the growing necessity to revisit Hall’s scholarly and activist legacy today. Elliott-Cooper takes issue with the contemporary left for failing to properly respond to a persistent institutional racism during neoliberalism and particularly argues that the 2011 English riots, following the shooting of Mark Duggan by police in Tottenham, are proof that an approach informed by Hall’s theoretical and activist work on race, ethnicity and policing is now more needed than ever in order to come to terms with the problems underlying the riots. In fact, the years after the riots have seen an increase in scholarship indebted to the “political and critical tradition of British cultural studies best exemplified by the work of Stuart Hall”, functioning as a “backlash against [...] current forms of post-ideological scholarship”, as Imogen Tyler describes her own current work on social abjection (2013: 215). In the following argument, I regard the English riots as a test case that can shape a dialogue between Hall’s work on ethnicity and difference, and younger currents in cultural studies. In particular, I will focus on the interplay of race and class that seems to be at the heart of the riots, and which has surfaced in many responses to them, most infamously historian David Starkey’s statement about the looters and rioters who, in his words, were “whites [who] have become black” (BBC 2011).

Abstract:
This study is about how a sponsored blog post of an influencer is encoded and how the readers in the comments decode the message and respond to the post. The purpose of the study is to increase understanding of how readers decode sponsored blog posts. We assumed before the implementation that more people would decode the messages in a manner that would be more critical of the cooperation, so a theory-based study of Stuart Hall's theory of encoding and decoding has been made. To achieve our purpose, we have used a qualitative content analysis. With the help of analytical concepts from MCDA, we have investigated both the submissions and the accompanying comments and developed the relevant parts of the material. This has since been analyzed with our theoretical concepts. To see how a influencer, in this case Isabella Löwengrip, imparts feelings as a way of writing a message, we used the rhetorical persuasions ethos, pathos and logos. When the comments were analyzed, the three hypothetical positions were used from the reception theory to see how readers decoded the message. The result showed that the majority of readers decoded the message that Isabella Löwengrip intended and ended up in the dominant/hegemonic position. It is possible to read in the analysis that not everyone commenting is in the dominant/hegemonic position. The conclusion is that the reception theory, more specifically Stuart Hall's theory of encoding and decoding, is correct when different individuals decode a message in different ways. This means that the assumption that recipients are critical of the cooperation on the chosen blog do not match.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to understand how libraries in videos uploaded on the web site YouTube are portrayed and may be perceived by the audience. Four videos introducing libraries have been chosen with the same criteria to study this. The analysis has been based on Stuart Hall’s theories about representation and production meaning and his encoding/decoding model. The method used to examine the videos are a directed kind of textual analysis. The analysis is divided into two parts where the first part is dedicated to how the videos are encoded and what the preferred reading of them seem to be. The second part of it is dedicated to study how and why negotiating and oppositional readings can be made of the videos. When it comes to how the videos are encoded, one found that they have similar target groups and that they use different kinds of codes to communicate to the target groups. All the videos show similar parts of the library, like books and magazines. When it comes to how and why negotiating and oppositional readings can be made one found that these kinds of readings can stem from the receiver wanting to limit the libraries’ resources to certain groups, the receiver not agreeing with what kind of literature the producer chose to represent the library, disinterest in the library, distrust in the library and the producer not including a representative from the target audience. The reasons behind the differences in how the videos are coded may be because of different kinds of producers, different kinds of depicted libraries and differing views on the target group. The study also shows that the videos show a traditional and hegemonic image of the libraries. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Noticing that there are ever more popular television shows centering around the working-class, this thesis analyses the complex representations of working-class, female characters on the popular prime-time television shows 2 Broke Girls, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, and Shameless through a mixed method, phenomenological approach focusing on a visual and textual analysis. Primarily making use of a Cultural Studies and feminist lens, I focus on deconstructing the categorical codes: body language, attire, attitude, language, interaction with others, and class comparisons that present themselves in each episode and argue that these shows’ representation follow both a dominant ideological framework and present forms of agency that illustrate how intersectional these characters are.

Abstract:
Dessa analyseras enligt medieforskaren Martin Conboys bok The Language of the News.

Abstract:
The study aimed to understand how established stereotypes of the collective identity of Malmö influences the Instagram account MemesofMalmö, along with how the representation of Malmö is based on the inhabitants and the city itself. The theoretical framework used was based on Stuart Hall’s representation theory and understanding of stereotyping. Furthermore, part of the theoretical framework has been the investigation of ideology, hegemony, and discourse concerning representation. The theories were implemented using text analysis, applying a critical ideological perspective, based on a selection of 50 posts. The result indicated that the underlying message in the representation expressed a critical attitude towards an established negative stereotype. It was conveyed by the material taking the present stereotyping and reproducing it in new contexts, which renegotiated the values for the stereotype. In conclusion, the evidence points to the fact that humoristic internet memes should not purely be viewed as simple jokes, but as a form of social and ideological output.

Abstract:
Celebrities used in advertising has recently been something that consumers have come in contact with on a daily basis. Corporations use celebrities and their attributes as positive reinforcement and association towards the company or their marketed product. Through increased usage of media, the consumers to this advertising technique have been given an opportunity towards better insight into celebrities’ daily life. People are not only receivers of advertising, they are also media producers for the medias agenda. This makes everyone significant in the distribution of advertising. The area of research is called Celebrity Endorsement. All theories within the area presume that all receivers interpret the message in the same manner. In classic communication research there are theories like habitus, encoding and decoding that are the basis for a receiver perspective. These theories are aimed inter alia at people’s past experience influences how people act in a social structure and the receiver thus detects the communication in different ways. In this study, we have therefore created a deeper understanding of consumer’s perspective in celebrity endorsement for further find links to the theories of classical communication research. In this study we want to create a deeper understanding from the perspective of the receiver of celebrity endorsement. This study is also to find connections to theories within classical communications research. The study will also investigate deeper to understand how people within the same target audience are decoding celebrity and advertising activities. To reach a result we have used a qualitative reception analysis, where focus groups from different target audiences has been used. Within the focus groups discussions of current TV-commercials and fictitious cooperation between celebrities and corporations were used for the participants to express their opinion of celebrities in advertising. The study’s result is summarized in four different perspectives, which emerged from the empirical material. The first perspective has been analyzed from the participants’ earlier experiences. The second perspective deals with the participants’ self-knowledge and differences in their capability to objectively being able to analyze their own, as well as the others capability of decoding the messages. The studies third perspective affects the participants’ confessions. This includes further differences in the participants reasoning and confessing or not confessing to celebrity endorsements impact on them. In the last perspective it is described how participants used irony to make a difficult topic easier to talk about. The result of our study shows that advertising with celebrities are decoded in more ways than are described in the models within celebrity endorsement and that classical communication research should be implemented Keywords: Celebrity endorsement, celebrity, encoding, decoding, habitus, Stuart Hall, Pierre Bourdieu, trademarks, brand

Abstract:
This dissertation consists of a critical component, 'Memoir-Writing and the Post-Colonial Southeast Asian Subject' and a creative piece titled Across Three Languages, Two Lands: A Life Narrative. Critical Component: Stuart Hall's definition of the individual as a subject underpins the critical component of my dissertation. Hall, working with Foucault's concept of subjectivity, states that 'the subject is produced within discourse ... It must submit to its rules and conventions, to its dispositions of power/knowledge' (Hall, 1997a, p. 55). For the purpose of this dissertation, I focus on cultural and social influences that impact on the post-colonial subject of Southeast Asia during the time period covered in the life narrative. In terms of cultural discourse, I investigate the adoption of English over the individual's native language, and by inference culture, as one's first language. In the area of social discourse, I look into the influence of nationalism in the context of Malaysia and Singapore. My investigation is carried out through an analysis of Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior. The Return by K.S. Maniam and Among the White Moonfaces by Shirley Lim. Through the creative component, I strive to do two things: narrate a personal story and in it, portray aspects of social history. The critical essay provides explanations for a more cogent reading of the life story. In addition the essay brings another facet of understanding to the postcolonial experience, one from the Southeast Asian point of view. Creative Component: Across Three Languages, Two Lands: A Life Narrative is the life story of the protagonist, Leong Kah Yan. Yan was born into a traditional Cantonese/Chinese family and grew up in newly independent, post-colonial Malaysia, in the 1960s and 1970s. Being Chinese and educated in English resulted in her subsequent marginalisation when Malaysia switched to privileging the Malays in the country's version of nationalism. Her migration to Singapore in the late 1970s coincided with the country plunging into vigorous nation-building and brought questions of delineation between nation and self. In addition, there was also the personal struggle between the role of English and her native language and culture in her life. Coming to terms with all these factors brought resolution to a certain degree. With awareness that each factor had left an indelible mark on her identity, Van's reconciliation is a middle ground where the individual is comfortable amidst communal and nationalistic demands.

Abstract:

The study consists of understanding how the creation of symbolic value in quilombola craft occurs from cultural entrepreneurial actions analyzed under the lens of reception theory, as suggested by the proposition of the communication model of coding and decoding of Stuart Hall. Thus, we explore the discursive field of production of quilombola handicrafts made in the municipality of Moju located in the state of Pará, northern Brazil, from discourses articulated in a cultural context permeated by the space-time flow of production, circulation, consumption and reproduction of symbolic values of this type of handicraft. To do so, we used as a research strategy the qualitative case study, whose analytical procedure consisted of the french discourse analysis. The creation of symbolic value in this quilombola handicraft is demarcated by the socio-historical context of the artisan and, for this reason, the production of this handicraft serves as a tool for the dissemination and preservation of quilombola culture. The results indicate that the creation of symbolic value of artisan artifacts occurs under a multicultural political logic revealing different powers and linked to a zone of influence dominated by the neoliberal recipe of capital accumulation. This demonstrates that the communicational process of a cultural production consists of considering the political dimension of the production of the symbolic value of a good that represents the history of that social group. Finally, the emancipatory perspective of cultural entrepreneurship indicates that the symbolic values of craft are preponderant elements that are not exhausted in the consumption of these goods and are incorporated into daily practices developed by producers and consumers of cultural artifacts.

Thor, Isabelle, and Urban Turesson. Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Economic Sciences, Communication and IT, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-5697.

Full text
Abstract:

Således delades modellen in i olika kategorier av egenuppfattningar.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This study focuses on an analysis of three text books in English, Prime Time, Second Time, and Third Time, written for Swedish pupils between grade seven and nine. The main focus of the study is to investigate to what extent the books may be considered to follow the steering principles of the Swedish education system. The theoretical backbone of the essay is centred on the construction and maintenance of stereotypes, and is written from a social constructivist point of view. In this context, I also reason around power relations and norms in the Western society – arguments which I, in the main analysis, apply to the books in question. Scrutinising the books from a social constructivist perspective, I reach the conclusion that the books are written with a Western bias, and also from a heteronormative angle. The essay finishes with a concluding remark of the most central parts from the theoretical section and the analysis respectively.

Abstract:
The ways in which advertisements can affect social and brand-related aspects is an area of interest for both companies and society at large. The aim of this study is to examine and identify differences in the production and interpretation of advertisements on Instagram, targeted towards men versus women. There are two research questions: (1) How can the production of Gillette and Gillette Venus’ advertisements on Instagram targeted towards men and women differ? (2) How can the interpretation of Gillette and Gillette Venus’ advertisements on Instagram targeted towards men and women differ, based on the gender of the interpreter?  The study includes a gender perspective and Goffman’s theory on gender and advertisements has been applied. To answer the second research question, Hall’s encoding/decoding theory has been applied.  The study consists of two research methods, a semiotic photo analysis and semi-structured interviews. The photo analysis was used for RQ1 and consisted of six photos, three from Gillette’s Instagram account and three photos from Gillette Venus’s account. The semi-structured interviews helped answer RQ2. A total of ten interviews were carried out, with an even distribution of male and female interviewees. A comparative analysis was used for both research methods to enable comparison between the two genders.  The results showed that there are three main differences in the production of Gillette and Gillette Venus’ advertisements on Instagram. As for RQ2, it was concluded that the gender of the interpreter affected how the advertisements’ overall message was interpreted.

This study analyses two non-western novels used in the subject of Swedish in upper secondary school: Fatou Diomes The Belly of the Atlantic and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies Half a Yellow Sun. Looking at how the books female main character relate to Stuart Halls theory of cultural identity, I come to the conclusion that they somewhat differently relate to an essential ”authentic” self. Salie talks explicit about a generic African soul that she possesses. Olanna never talks about anything ”authentic”, but her narrative and contrary subject positions can be read as a way of demasking her European ”white” self in favour of a truer Igbo self. I also come to the conclusion that both novels use themes of alienation related to gender structures and positioned westernness and that this kind of reading could contribute to interesting classroom discussions about a dynamic interpretation on culture and identity.

Abstract:
This study was carried out during the spring of 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa with a Minor Field Study (MFS) scholarship funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). South Africa is a country with a complex society due to the still recent history of Apartheid. South Africa faces great challenges with the gap between rich and poor, high unemployment and deep expertise gaps between the white minority and the historically disadvantaged coloureds and black majority. As a result the contemporary situation is extensive segregation and difficulties for the multicultural population to conduct a common cultural identity. The aim of this study was to find out how four South African issues of international fashion magazines deals with the representation of black, white and coloured people. Furthermore, to find out how South African women from socially diverse areas experience and perceive this representation. Quantitative content analysis, connotative and denotative picture analysis and the conduction of interviews was made in order to reach a result. Consequently, it turned out that the investigated magazines do not present a fair and equal representation of the South African society, hence highly over representing the white minority in each magazine. Additionally, South African women do not describe the fashion magazines as presenting an equal representation of race, neither that a reality based ideal is being conveyed.

Abstract:
The thesis studies the identities formed by the diaspora experience based on the specific case of the gauchos who have migrated from the state of Rio Grande do Sul in direction to the other Brazilian states in search for better life conditions and jobs. Its main issue focuses on the pedagogical role of the gauchismo as a substract for the construction of a diasporal gaucha identity. In order to develop this study, an analysis of the narratives gathered through semi-structured interviews with eleven people was done- gaucho migrants or directly involved in the process- in the cities of Tangará da Serra and Campo Novo do Parecis in Mato Grosso (cities with a large number of gaucho migration) and also some report excerpts presented on the RBSTV series “A Conquista do Oeste” from June to August 2004, having as theme – with a strong heroic accent- the gaucha diaspora to many Brazilian regions. The theoretical apport is found in the Cultural Studies field relating it to the narrative studies and the discursive gender and has been structured on the basis of some authors like Stuart Hall, Leonel Arfuch, Nestor Garcia Canclini, Zygmunt Bauman, Dominique Maigueneau, and Luiz Antônio Marcuschi among others. The developed analyses show the strength that the gauchismo-as a set of discursive and non-discursive practices which are based on what would be the gaucho’s costumes and habits, all of them having the gaucho from the Pampas as reference- and its pedagogy have in the sense of being present in the most diverse social spheres of the researched communities- especially in the school environment- being a fundamental element in the construction of the gauchos’ identity in a diasporal situation.

Abstract:
A qualitative study of the 2019 HBO miniseries Chernobyl and how it perpetuates a stereotype western perception of post Soviet countries and their inhabitants, influenced by the antagonists created during Cold War in film produced by west. The Soviet stereotype is examined through film and representation theory, and seeks to investigate how the practice of othering is carried out by narrative functions throughout pivotal moments of the series. The analysis concludes that the sensitive matter of adapting a domestic Soviet narrative of the worlds greatest nuclear disaster into a Hollywood production can be read as an attempt to grant the real life victims a symbolic kind of solace, yet it also fails to portray Soviet citizens outside of the stereotype conforming depiction often seen in western media.

Abstract:
This dissertation produces the first attempt to bring the work of sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and the political theory literature on citizenship into dialogue with the scholarship on American empire in the field of International Relations (IR). It explores how the United States’ quest for global pre-eminence, mirrored by the war in Iraq, reveals and exacerbates the social wounds at the seams of American society. To do this, it introduces three new concepts to the field of International Relations. It builds on historian Christophe Charle’s sociological framework of “imperial society” and “national habitus” (2001, 2004 and 2005) and introduces an original concept, the field of citizenship, to examine social conflict over the distribution of military sacrifice amongst citizens in the United States. Finally, it explores these tensions by looking at multiple documentary sources, including over 200 newspaper articles, 60 testimonies about the war from soldiers and their relatives, congressional documents, and military manpower policies.

Abstract:
This study is devoted to analysing discourses on Indigenous folks who, circulating in different environments, are articulated in higher education students’ narratives. So I investigated narratives by 68 students from institutions located in Porto Alegre City in courses preparing future teachers. There were special moments for the production of narratives in four different groups, in which one of them was organised from an extension course, and the other three were designed in specific moments within the curriculum provided by teaching courses. I considered in this research the set of oral narratives produced in all four groups, the written texts and/or drawings by students and other materials brought to the meetings as well as my notes in a field notebook. The issues caused me to ponder during this investigative process were the following: which discourses are producing Indigenous folks in higher education students’ narratives? Which narratives get visibility for these students and which true effects are produced? Which information and knowledge sources Indigenous folks are named and depicted from in the school context? Which meanings are articulated in these narratives? Which social markers are used and which binary oppositions characterise the Indigenous folks? How students are embedded and how they position/are positioned in producing these narratives? My research is located in the poststructuralist Cultural Studies perspective, problematising meaning making practices which constitute and position differently subjects in relation to power/knowledge. In this approach, notions such as culture, language, subject, power, truth, identity and difference are very important. Authors like Michel Foucault, Stuart Hall, Homi Bhabha, Zygmunt Bauman, Jacques Derrida, Jorge Larrosa, Carlos Skliar, Núria Ferre, Kathryn Woodward, Rosa Hessel Silveira, Tomaz Tadeu da Silva, Marisa Costa, Alfredo Veiga-Neto, among others, from their productions in this field, hep us to analyse. Taking into consideration the set of narratives about Indigenous folks in the research, I have defined three analysis axes: discourses shaping the nationalities; discourses inventing subjects in school practices and discourses operating narrating strategies by stereotypes. These units have been used as meaning convergence points and have allowed analysing many practices anchored in particular regimes of truth. In the first axis, I have established relationships between ways students have recounted Indigenous folks and historical, literary, iconographical and didactical discourses. In this part of the work I am concerned with the effects from the articulation between Indigenous folks and the national identity. I have also discussed some displacements in nation meanings in the globalisation era. In the second axis, I have examined particular established practices in curriculum to approach the Indigenous theme. The analysed practices were those recounted by students, especially in primary school experiences, and I have been concerned with effects of these discourses, which provide a kind of visibility for Indigenous folks. What has attracted my attention was recurrence of certain narratives about the Indigenous Day celebration, an approach of a theme having particular contours in classroom, helping to highlight what should be recollected and what should remain in oblivion. In the final axis, I have discussed stereotype making as a discursive strategy, that is, as a way of knowledge and identification that provides a particular order, producing practices and positioning subjects. I have analysed effects of articulations established between the Indigenous and nature, and between Indigenous practices and the magician thought, approaching also ways to recount the Indigenous presence in the urban centres. The articulation made between the Indigenous and nature works as a kind of reading key, the Indigenous folks being recounted as natural inhabitants from the forest, a social and geographical place also producing a set of characteristics, attached to the body, provided as belonging to the Indigenous nature. It is possible to say that stereotyped narratives about Indigenous folks are capturing movements to make difference similar, stamp it on the bodies, blaming on the other for what is strange in him/her and establishing characteristics and social places. I argue that in inventing Indigenous and non-Indigenous subjects, multiple discourses work by entwining, strengthening, resisting and so shaping and inventing identities and differences in power and knowledge relationships. Analysing the students’ narratives allowed understanding identities and differences as productions daily working in the culture, in the entwining of different meaning makings, which invent, position and govern subjects. Meanings are made and established in daily trades, clashes and power games. In these practices, those who are recounted and those who recount are both constructed.

Abstract:
In this PHD thesis, I examined some cultural production which allowed me to follow activities linked to Science/Chemistry school knowledge production. For that, I examined Brazilian teaching official documents, the National Curricular Parameters, some Chemistry didactic books and a scientific publication magazine (Superinteressante Magazine). The research was developed under inspiration of Cultural Studies, using theoretical support by Stuart Hall, which I tried to connect to Michel Foucault’s and Thomas Popkewitz’s thoughts to carry out discursive analysis. The analysis show the interconnections between the enunciates that are part of different speeches published in these production and indicate that themes such as health, environment, technological development and consume started to constitute the agenda, in the referred magazine, in the didactic books and in the National Curricular Parameters. This subjects legitimate and submit these themes to school teaching in the Science/Chemistry area in Basic Education. The insertion of new themes/contents indicates that there is a rupture regarding what was formally considered pertinent school contents to the teaching of Science/Chemistry. Regarding health, for example, the texts started to worry about living longer, healthier, having a better look, carrying about being agile and young, which implies living in a “democratic” dictatorship of making responsible choices regarding body care, in other words, in these cultural aspects the speech related to health care is associated to will changes of attitude in the people’s ways of living. About the environment theme, the texts highlight the importance of adding daily practices to the school contents, which is considered a prerequisite for the citizenship development to promote the relationship between the people and the environment.

The paper aims to analyze , how transgender identities were produced , expressed and re-signified by cartoonist Laertes Coutinho in the first decade of this century , more specifically in the period between the years 2009 and 2013 . Therefore, the research was developed through such strips cartoonist produces and publishes on its website called Total Muriel . It will attack also interviews that yielded the same television programs , crossing the lines of his experiences with the plots developed by its characters . Accordingly, it was thought to analyze the categories of gender, body , sexuality and IDs mutate over time and in certain areas, thereby transforming subjectifications the subjects worked , transgender . Thus , as Laertes Coutinho problematized the subjective identity and bodily transformations which trans subjects are submitted and submit , as well as what conditions were necessary , and what barriers were found to make these processes happen . Thus , there was a dialogue with the theoretical framework of Queer Theory , especially Judith Butler , to think gender issues and abjection of such subjects . Still worked with Stuart Hall for the analysis of the relation to the processes of identification, Guacira Lopes Blonde , among others . Yet appropriated the understanding of the concept of the frontier used by Deleuze and the epistemology of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick produced by cabinet.

Abstract:
The subject matter of this dissertation is the design, analysis and practical implementation of a new numerical method to approximate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of regular Sturm–Liouville problems, given in Liouville’s normal form, defined on compact intervals, with self-adjoint separated boundary conditions. These are classical problems in computational mathematics which lie on the interface between numerical analysis and spectral theory, with important applications in physics and chemistry, not least in the approximation of energy levels and wave functions of quantum systems. Because of their great importance, many numerical algorithms have been proposed over the years which span a vast and diverse repertoire of techniques. When compared with previous approaches, the principal advantage of the numerical method proposed in this dissertation is that it is accompanied by error bounds which: (i) hold uniformly over the entire eigenvalue range, and, (ii) can attain arbitrary high-order. This dissertation is composed of two parts, aggregated according to the regularity of the potential function. First, in the main part of this thesis, this work considers the truncation, discretization, practical implementation and MATLAB software, of the new approach for the classical setting with continuous and piecewise analytic potentials (Ramos and Iserles, 2015; Ramos, 2015a,b,c). Later, towards the end, this work touches upon an extension of the new ideas that enabled the truncation of the new approach, but instead for the general setting with absolutely integrable potentials (Ramos, 2014).

Abstract:
A critical investigation of the public/private distinction as it has been conceived in Anglo-American political thinking in the second half of the 20th century. A broadly held consensus has developed amongst many theorists that public/private does not refer to any single determinate distinction or relationship but rather to an often ambiguous range of related but analytically distinct conceptual oppositions. The argument of this thesis is that if we approach public/private in the search for analytic or conceptual clarity then this consensus is correct. Against this I propose that a number of the most dominant invocations of the distinction can be understood to express public/private as an irreducibly political dialectic that mediates the relationship between the subjective and objective side of social and political life. By locating these conceptually diverse invocations within a broader and more determinate framework of the historical development and contestation of the boundaries which establish the conditions for subjectivity, as the assertion of political agency, on the one hand, and which demarcate, police and defend these particular boundaries, as part of the objectively given character of social life and institutional organisation, on the other hand, then a more determinate character to public/private can be recognized. I then seek to explore the capacity of this model to capture and explain the peculiar post-war problematisation of public/private amongst a number of new left thinkers in Britain and America.

Abstract:
This thesis explores solo performance in New Zealand. That solo performance has been widely used in New Zealand's relatively brief theatre history is usually ascribed to the economy, manoeuvrability and adaptability of the form - common reasons for the popularity of solo performance elsewhere as well. But this thesis considers solo performance as a kind of theatre that has been suited to New Zealand in a distinctive way. In particular, I argue that solo performance has emerged on the margins of mainstream theatre in New Zealand as a means of actively engaging with a sense of isolation that typifies the post-colonial New Zealand experience. The ability of the solo performance to move between remote rural settlements and urban centres has connected these New Zealand communities in a way that is unusual for theatre in New Zealand. Furthermore, a solo performer speaking directly to an audience about the experience of living in New Zealand allows for an intimate interaction with a traditionally stoic and laconic masculine society. In this thesis, I make a case for three solo performances where it is possible to see, in the representation of a search for what it means to be a New Zealander, a theatrical contribution to nation-building: The End of the Golden Weather (1959), Coaltown Blues (1984) and Michael James Manaia (1991). However, in a subsequent chapter, I look at solo performances in New Zealand that might better be understood within global movements such as feminism and multiculturalism. I argue that this shift has depleted the power that the form once held to comment upon New Zealand identity and to assist in the search for national identity. I conclude the thesis by considering how ongoing theatre practice may be informed by the experience of solo performance in New Zealand.

Abstract: Maize brachytic populations have been constantly studied in maize breeding, the interest for low-growing cultivars has increased, mainly because they tolerate high density of plants. Prolificacy is one of the main components of yield in maize that besides the yield stability allows higher efficiency in the use of nutrients in the plant. The objective of this work was to verify the genetic variability for different carachteres in the Isanão VF-1 and Isanão VD-1 brachytic populations after seven cycles of mass selection for prolificacy. A total of 121 open cross corn progenies from the Isanão VF-1 population and 65 open cross corn progenies from the Isanão VD-1 population, both brachytic maize populations, were evaluated in first crop 2017 (E1) and second crop 2017/2018 (E2). The evaluated traits for the two seasons were corn stunt complex, fall index, prolificacy and ear yield, and only for E2 were evaluated feminine flowering, plant height, ear height and grain yield. Genetic parameters and expected gains with selection, with 20% of intensity, were calculated for each season and jointly. For the Isanão VF-1 population, heritabilities were estimated from 37.70% to 74.82%, and expected gains of -5.11%, -10.48% for corn stunt complex, 19.57% and 7.13% for prolificacy, 20.75% and 15.74% for ear yield at E1 and E2 respectively. For the Isanão VD-1 population the heritabilities varied between 8.01% and 75.36%, and estimated gains were -3.198% and -9.565% for corn stunt complex, 12.... Abstract:
This thesis deals with the short story “Wanderer, kommst du nach Spa ...” (1950) by the German author Heinrich Böll (1917-1985). The well-established interpretation of this famous short story is that it deals with the dismal fact that the Nazis ended the development of Western culture, which cumulatively had been on its way since Greek antiquity. In this paper another reading is proposed, namely that the short story sheds light on the influence of the Romantic era in Germany and that a certain interpretation and use of Romanticism provided some of the seeds to the obscure ideas of the Nazi era. Research on Böll´s early writings is presented. The notion of cultural memory is introduced. The intertextual connections between Bölls text and other texts are being uncovered. Most fruitful proves the connection between “Wanderer” and the poem “Der Spaziergang” (1795) by Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) to be. “Wanderer” can be read as a satirical version of Schillers poem. Reasons for Böll to choose Schiller’s elegy as a target are discussed at length. A parable in the story, ”wie ein Gesicht eines Schlafenden” / like a face of a sleeping person, unfolds an undertext to the short story, a Catholic text. Jesus, the Holy Communion, prayers and the eternal cross are present. Wanderer can be read as a requiem over the young soldier. Further, the inability of the wounded soldier to connect to his surroundings is interpreted as a parallell to Germany at the end of the war; the Nazis had stolen the Heimat from the people and it was no longer possible to interpret the world as something you belonged to. While Heinrich Böll on the surface of the text tries to recapture the German language from its nazi-poisend condition, the protagonist within the text regains his identity by means of his own handwriting - a part of his language.

In the period of 1979 to 1997, the British Labour Party had lost three general elections consecutively. In this period, the British Left not only attempted to examine the socio-political, economic, and cultural crises in Britain, but also investigated the theory, organization structure, and policies of the Labor Party. Due to the swindling support for labour movement, a decrease of members in the trade unions and an outdated image of the Party, all these became the challenges to the British Left who had to face up in their developments of theories. This paper is aimed to examine the developments of British Left’s theories in the period of 1970s-1980s, from the perspective of Stuart Hall (1932-). Hall elaborates and reconstructs the Left’s theory and practice, on a basis of Marx’s and Marxists’ theories, such as those of Gramsci, Althusser, Laclau and Mouffe, which are then integrated with his own writings in cultural studies. In Hall’s view, the orthodox Marxism with its lop-sided emphasis on economic factor and class struggle has lost its touch with reality. This is because economy has no longer been “the” factor that determines the development of society and history; instead one has to take into account a wide range of factors that involved politics, society, culture and ideology. Neither can class now play any key role in causing any revolution. People, in a broad sense, should be put into consideration instead. It is based on a more comprehensive base that Hall develops his Leftist thought, giving an impetus to a new direction for socialism by his offer of “Marxism without Guarantees”, that is to say, Marxism would neither guarantee a revolution for the working class, nor any direction for its development, nor for its history a predetermined future. The prospects of the Left theories lie in their efforts to commit itself to pluralism and democracy and to the practices in a widely expanded domain of social movements. Hall‘s theory not only enhances in the Left awareness of social change and of a new direction for innovation and practice, it also provides Labour Party with a theoretical basis for its transformation.

Abstract:
Based on the semiotic analysis, this diploma thesis analyses mythological frameworks of chosen magazines. It consists of two parts, a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical part is focused on semiotics as science, examines a sign and its historical development, describes myth, its history and research, as well as defines a theoretical starting points leading to definition of mythological framework. This definition is built on the theory of decoding and encoding of Stuart Hall, as well as his representation acknowledgements, as well as on the works of Claude Lévi-Strauss and Roland Barthes examining the myth. The practical part consists of definition of research-subject and semiotic analysis of mythological frameworks in front pages of Reflex and Respekt magazines. Findings of this analysis are then compared. This comparison leads to confirmation or disproval of hypotheses the author articulated prior to the analysis.

Colpani, Gianmaria. "Queer Hegemonies: Politics and Ideology in Contemporary Queer Debates." Doctoral thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11562/963338.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I explore contemporary transformations of both sexual politics and queer theory from a politico-philosophical perspective. On the one hand, I analyze how progressive sexual politics have been recently articulated to the politico-economic project of neoliberalism and to new forms of racism, nationalism, and imperialism. Thus, the dissertation is situated within contemporary queer debates on “homonormativity” (Duggan 2003), “homonationalism” (Puar 2007), and “sexual imperialism” (Massad 2007). On the other hand, I focus on how queer theory has responded to these political transformations. I read both processes—the transformations of contemporary sexual politics and the transformations of the queer theoretical field—through the theory of hegemony that Stuart Hall appropriated from Antonio Gramsci and reactivated in Britain in the 1980s, in the context of Thatcherism (see Hall 1986; 1988). The central goal of the dissertation is to explore the ways in which the conceptual apparatus developed by Hall in that context can help us better understand today, thirty years later, both the transformations of progressive sexual politics and the transformations of the queer theoretical field. In the first chapter, I focus on Hall’s work. First, I discuss Hall’s politico-philosophical interventions: his reading of Gramsci, his theory of politics and ideology, his analyses of Thatcherism, and his critical dialogues with key contemporary interlocutors, especially Louis Althusser and Ernesto Laclau. Second, I zoom in on some key political moments of the construction of Thatcherite hegemony. Hence, in the next two chapters, I turn to contemporary queer debates. In the second chapter, I explore Lisa Duggan’s (2003) work on homonormativity: a gay politics ideologically aligned with the politico-economic project of neoliberalism. While the first part of this chapter is devoted to Duggan’s analysis, the rest of it reconstructs the transformations of queer theory in the face of this shift of the politico-ideological terrain. Here, I situate both a “Marxist renaissance” in queer theory (see Floyd 2009) and the emergence of queer of color critique (see Ferguson 2004). I read the relation between homonormativity and these two emerging theoretical formations through Hall’s theory of hegemony. Finally, in the third chapter, I turn to Jasbir K. Puar’s (2007) critique of homonationalism and Joseph A. Massad’s (2007) critique of sexual imperialism. First of all, I reconstruct their respective analyses as instances of queer diasporic critique (see Gopinath 2005). Hence, I pose a question of theoretical practice: while criticizing U.S. and European imperialism, to what extent are these diasporic critiques located in the global North able to articulate the concrete struggles around sexual politics emerging in the South? Each chapter ends with a political vignette that supplements the theoretical debates. In the conclusion, I draw on my analyses and on such vignettes in order to profile what I term, following Hall once again, a “queer Marxism without guarantees.”

Abstract:
The Tea Party’s influence in the recent 2010 elections suggests that the group is making an impact within American politics. This project seeks to identify the cultural forces at work and ground them within Antonio Gramsci’s framework of hegemony. Taking a cue from Michael Bérubé’s recent book The Left at War, I perform a close analysis of the Tea Party’s project for hegemony. I focus on the media discourses of the Tea Party movement, performing a close reading of two key Tea Party websites and unpacking two important televised moments relating to the Tea Party’s rise as a grassroots movement. I argue that the Tea Party uses the practice of articulation to persuade the American public that Tea Party members are the rightful heirs to the project of “America” that the Founding Fathers began centuries ago by using the theories of Bérubé, Stuart Hall, Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe as reference points. Finally, I use my analysis of the Tea Party’s articulatory practices to begin exploring a way forward for the American Left, building on the groundbreaking cultural work of Bérubé, Hall, and Laclau and Mouffe.

Abstract:
This paper aims to contribute to knowledge of stereotypization mechanisms, bringing in the case of PR consultants. Using lenses of the key cultural form - film and television series - the project analyses a way of representing PR profession, as depicted on TV screen both in Czech Republic and the United Kingdom, during 2000-2017 time period. Theoretical frame is drawing on key ideas on stereotype, narrowed by film usage, as seen in the work of Walter Lippmann and others. Main hypothesis is based on assumption that negative media portrayal might interfere with professional reputation. Analytical part employs qualitative, thematical analysis that focuses on interpretation of personal features, behavioral characteristics and depiction of reocurring key themes. The final outcome then presents a professional portrayal of Public Relations on Czech and British television scene, builded up on prominent steretypes, accompanied by relevant quotes to illustrate the point. Key findings show undestanding communication as means of persuasion, leading to egoism, a lack of ethical values and dominant attitude in relation to clients and journalists. To prove the contribution argument that these negative attributes will further affect the future professional status of PR, the final insight illustrates such impact by...
