Abstract:
Ziziphus jujuba extracts possess a broad spectrum of biological activities, such as antioxidant and anticancer activities in melanoma cancers. Nevertheless, the compounds contain high antioxidant capacities and anticancer activities in melanoma cells, shown to be effective in hyperpigmentation disorders, but whether flavonoid glycosides from Z. jujuba regulate anti-melanogenesis remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the anti-melanogenic activity of five flavonoid glycosides from Z. jujuba var. inermis (Bunge) Rehder seeds, including jujuboside A (JUA), jujuboside B (JUB), epiceanothic acid (EPA), betulin (BTL), and 6’’’-feruloylspinosin (FRS), in B16F10 melanoma cells and zebrafish larvae. According to our results, JUB, EPA, and FRS potently inhibited α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH)-induced melanogenesis and prevented hyperpigmentation in zebrafish larvae. In particular, under α-MSH-stimulated conditions, FRS most significantly inhibited α-MSH-induced intracellular and extracellular melanin content in B16F10 melanoma cells. Additionally, JUB, EPS, and FRS remarkably downregulated melanogenesis in α-MSH-treated zebrafish larvae, with no significant change in heart rate. Neither JUA nor BTA were effective in downregulating melanogenesis in B16F10 melanoma cells and zebrafish larvae. Furthermore, JUB, EPA, and FRS directly inhibited in vitro mushroom tyrosinase enzyme activity. JUB, EPA, and FRS also downregulated cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels and the phosphorylation of cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB), and subsequent microphthalmia transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase expression. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that JUB, EPA, and FRS isolated from Z. jujuba var. inermis (Bunge) Rehder seeds exhibit potent anti-melanogenic properties by inhibition of the cAMP-CERB-MITF axis and consequent tyrosinase activity.

Abstract:
Abstract Yellowjackets are notable pests of humans due to their opportunistic foraging behaviors, painful stings, and potential for causing dangerous allergic reactions. Baited traps provide a useful supplement for controlling yellowjackets compared with nest treatments, which are often dangerous, time consuming, costly, and do little to prevent nuisance interactions between humans and foragers. This study compares three homemade yellowjacket traps and three commercially available traps in Lake County, California, to determine efficacy and cost benefit. Traps were set at five sites and randomly rotated between six plots per site and baits were changed every 2 wk per commercial manufacturer recommendations. Cost benefit was determined using material and bait cost, as well as bait change frequency and overall trap efficacy. Yellowjacket count data were analyzed using a hurdle model. Traps compared included the Rescue! Yellowjacket trap, the Rescue! Wasp, Hornet, and Yellowjacket trap, the Victor Yellowjacket trap, a homemade bottle trap, jar trap, and homemade jug trap. The total number of yellowjackets collected was 33,321. The trap that collected the highest number of yellowjackets was the Rescue! Yellowjacket trap (n = 19,257) and the trap that collected the fewest yellowjackets was the jar trap (n = 65). The Rescue! Yellowjacket trap was the most cost-effective, calculated at approximately $0.40/100 yellowjackets collected. The jar trap was the least cost-effective, calculated at approximately $31.10/100 yellowjackets collected. The Rescue! Yellowjacket trap was overall the most effective and cost-effective trap evaluated for Lake County, California.

Abstract:
The dart thrower’s motion is a wrist rotation along an oblique plane from radial extension to ulnar flexion. We report an in-vivo study to confirm the use of the dart thrower’s motion during activities of daily living. Global wrist motion in ten volunteers was recorded using a three-dimensional optoelectronic motion capture system, in which digital infra-red cameras track the movement of retro-reflective marker clusters. Global wrist motion has been approximated to the dart thrower’s motion when hammering a nail, throwing a ball, drinking from a glass, pouring from a jug and twisting the lid of a jar, but not when combing hair or manipulating buttons. The dart thrower’s motion is the plane of global wrist motion used during most activities of daily living. Arthrodesis of the radiocarpal joint instead of the midcarpal joint will allow better wrist function during most activities of daily living by preserving the dart thrower’s motion.

Hano, Katarzyna. "Jury Decision-Making Study." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/1242.

Abstract:
In this thesis I combine the social network analysis approach with the traditional experimental approach to study the phenomena of jury decision-making. I examine whether with each trial a social network is formed. The jurors, the two teams of lawyers, as well as the accused and the judge, all form a social network with cliques and leaders. This division of individuals into specific cliques, along with the lawyers' performance in court, is hypothesized to have a significant impact on the jury's verdict.

Thus, by specifically studying the lawyers' engagement and disengagement on the jurors during a trial and the impact this has on the verdict, as well as understanding the structure of the social network that the individual jurors create, I hope to shed light on some of the influences that are key in delivering the verdict. In addition, this pioneering study may lead to significant policy changes in the future.

Abstract:
The object of this study were the Investment Funds Indexed to the Dollar available to the general investor in the Brazilian market, from July/2000 to June/2001. In order to analyse their behaviour, the study discussed the theoretical background of the return rate curve for dollar related assets in Brazil and how it impacts their negotiations, by producing two different terms - the -clean- rate and the -dirty- rate. The main goal of the research was to find out if the funds could be separated into different clusters. In order to achieve this, two different aspects of the funds were studied - marketing and financial. Their marketing characteristics dealt with fees, minimum investment requirements, relevant day for the NAVPS and NAVPS availability. The financial characteristics were approached by their return and risk, benchmark and performance index analysis - thru the Sharpe Index and the Differential Return over the Sigma. The return and risk obtained for the funds were also compared to the return and risk observed in the domestic curve of the Brazilian risk up to 720 days.

Mbukushe, Fundiwe Doreen. "A study of JJR Jolobe's selected children's rhymes." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53301.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study identifies the predominant features in JJR Jolobe's children's poetry (rhymes). Another purpose well worth considering is the impact poems can have on children's language because poetry is the highest literary form and without poetry a child will sense the loss. The language in poetry is learned in an immitative manner because it is natural to childhood thereby helping children to respond almost instictively. They hear languages as part of their early environment and take it through imitation. In Jolobe's poems children learn about:- 1. The physical background which constitute geographical location, natural scenery appropriate for narrative. 2. The spiritual background which includes the emotional climate created by religious moral, social and psychological conditions. One should note that the speaker's rhymes enable the youngsters to build upon the language facilities and attempts one has to improve so that a child can communicate in his culture in an affective and productive way. These poems help the child to keep the sense of nationality, describe their nature land lovingly and understand the essential quality of their own race. Through Jolobe's poems children do not overlook isiXhosa oral heritage at school level and let oral tradition of the other nations dominate. Furthermore critical theory reflects that Jalobe's rhymes are genuinely poetry meant for fun. Humorous and nonsensical verses often serve as outlets for laughter and fun. Jolobe's work follows briefly the history of the Xhosa nation tracing their tradition, culture and language whereby it reflects the mental behaviour of a group and reveal its love and its hatred of certain things.

Hall, James Patrick. "An Empirical Study of Appointed Counsel Effectiveness in Jury Trials." ScholarWorks, 2014. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/61.

Full text
Abstract:
Anecdotal evidence supports the belief among indigent individuals who are assigned defense counsel that they would be better represented by privately retained counsel. This perspective jeopardizes attorney effectiveness by reducing communication and trust between the attorney and client. Research on the effectiveness of counsel is sparse. The purpose of this quantitative study was to bridge this gap in knowledge by comparing the effectiveness of privately retained and publicly appointed counsel between 2008 and 2013, both before and after the imposition of state-wide compensation limitations on publicly appointed defense counsel. The theoretical framework was Stuntz's theory, which stresses that one part of the criminal justice system will be compensated for elsewhere in the system. Research questions focused on the success rates of publicly funded and privately retained counsel in jury trials in a large state district court in New England. Data were collected from court records and analyzed using tests of proportions and a binary logistic regression to determine the success rates of the types of counsel and whether appointed counsels' relative effectiveness changed after the compensation limitations were imposed in 2011. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in acquittal rates between counsel groups or for either counsel group before and after the imposition of the statewide compensation limits. Implications for positive social change include educating defendants on the effectiveness of publicly appointed counsel to enhance the trust within these attorney-client relationships, and improving the quality of discourse in legislative deliberations focused on weighing budget cuts to appointed counsel compensation with the risk to the fair administration of justice.

Smith, Norman. "Jury selection and representation: a jury composition study of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, North Carolina from 1976-77 compared to 1980-81." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 1990. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/1927.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis theme is to examine a facet of the political science discipline, viz., judicial process and its relationship to the trial by jury concept, i.e., jury selection and representation in a particular locale. Thus, the locus for this intricate project will be a jury composition study of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, North Carolina jury pool for two biennium periods, 1976-77 and 1980-81, at the Twenty-Sixth Judicial District for the State of North Carolina. That is, to compare the socio-demographic characteristics of the total population of Charlotte-Mecklenburg to those persons who served in the jury pool in Charlotte-Mecklenburg for the years, 1976-77 and 1980-81, to evaluate fair and equitable jury representation. The method and technique(s) employed to accomplish the objective of the thesis theme can be comparmentalized into two parts, viz., empirical and non-empirical. In the latter situation, the information will be of a secondary nature and discerned from a content analysis approach. In the empirical phase, data was collected from a jury composition study and survey sampling methodology. And, of course, the data was analyzed by way of statistical hypothesis testing and mathematical probability. The conclusion to be drawn from the empirical dimension of this study is that of eight socio-demographic variables examined in this study to determine fair jury representation, for race, for 1976-77, the alternative hypothesis of a difference was confirmed; but for 1980-81, the null hypothesis of no difference was confirmed. For gender, in both periods, the hypothesis of no difference would stand. For the other categories as income, occupation, age and education, for 1976-77, the alternative hypothesis of difference would stand. Thus, there was not wholesale underrepresentation in the jury pools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg for Bienniums 1976-77 and 1980-81. In the nonempirical phase, it has to be concluded that within all judicial territories and districts across the nation, in order to make concrete and practical the abstract idea of trial by jury in Anglo-American law, a jury selection system framework is established and regulated by constitutional and statutory enactment. In order to make this scheme workable, source(s) or list of eligible persons is sine qua non to its existence; but to ensure that such source(s) reflect adequately and appropriately the community from which they are drawn, certain constitutional standards and mathematical or quantitative tools are often employed to ensure compliance. The management of public affairs is no less poignant in the judicial arena, i.e., judicial process, than, say, in the executive or legislative branches of government. For this reason alone, knowledge of jury selection processes and procedure, and, in turn, jury representation warrants serious attention as it affects and effects the citizenry at large and public policy, to bridge the gap of the ideal versus the reality.

Abstract:
AbstractIn Kyrgyzstan, scholars disagree about the outcomes of the Tulip Revolution of 2005: while some argue that the revolution has not resulted in noteworthy changes in the country, others see it as the beginning of major political change. To trace the materiality of such change it is necessary to look at the micro-level of a society, as this chapter does by focusing on the house as the unit of analysis for a close study of change. It examines the gradual transformation of dwellings in Ak Jar, an illegal squatter settlement on the northern edge of Kyrgyztan’s capital city Bishkek. The immediate aftermath of the Tulip Revolution saw the emergence of numerous illegal squatter settlements on the outer fringes of the city. Ak Jar, the largest of these, has some 15,000 inhabitants who arrived in Bishkek as internal migrants in search of employment. The dwellings in Ak Jar have changed over the course of time: most began as small mud shacks, and changed when a family generated enough money to improve and expand them. The development of these houses was central for the gradual official recognition of the illegal settlements that emerged in post-revolutionary Kyrgyzstan. House biographies are therefore intrinsically tied to wider developments in Kyrgyz society and throw new light on the ruptures, power struggles, and consolidation of power relations after the Tulip Revolution.

Abstract:
Abstract Portugal is a traditional country of emigration with a multigenerational diaspora spread across a large number of countries. In the last 50 years, especially after the 1974 revolution, it developed a welfare state that responds to the needs of residents (including immigrants). Traditionally, this welfare state has been described as fragile in comparison with other welfare regimes in Europe. Nevertheless, it was built as a universal welfare system based on jus solis and deterritorialized jus sanguinis regime. The study of the extension of social protection to Portuguese citizens living abroad had not yet received sufficient attention, albeit recurrent news on measures and strategies that the state put in practice to assist Portuguese emigrants in need. This chapter will survey some of the recent policies to reach citizens abroad by showing the limits of the Portuguese welfare state in action. Abstract:
A high-pressure jet-stirred reactor (HP-JSR) has been built and applied to the study of NOx and N2O formation and CO oxidation in lean-premixed (LPM) combustion. The measurements obtained with the HP-JSR provide information on how NOx forms in lean-premixed, high-intensity combustion, and provide comparison to NOx data published recently for practical LPM combustors. The HP-JSR results indicate that the NOx yield is significantly influenced by the rate of relaxation of super-equilibrium concentrations of the O-atom. Also indicated by the HP-JSR results are characteristic NOx formation rates. Two computational models are used to simulate the HP-JSR, and to provide comparison to the measurements. The first is a chemical reactor model (CRM) consisting of two perfectly-stirred reactors (PSRs) placed in series. The second is a stirred reactor model with finite rate macromixing (i.e., recirculation) and micromixing. The micromixing is treated by either coalescence-dispersion (CD) or interaction-by-exchange-with-the-mean (IEM) theory. Additionally, a model based on one-dimensional gas dynamics with chemical reaction is used to assess chemical conversions within the gas sample probe.

Abstract:
In numerous engineering and science applications understanding the dynamic behavior of two interacting particles plays an indispensable role as it is the foundation based upon which the behavior of a large number of particles may be predicted. When two particles interact, two prominent forces of adhesion and elasticity are at work and, in some respect, in competition. This is especially true when particle-particle collision dynamics is of interest. Upon collision, two particles either develop physical bond, coalesce to form an agglomeration or rebound, each following a distinct path. A promising theory to address particle-particle collision dynamics is due to Johnson, Kendal and Roberts [1] referred to as the JKR method. However, JKR suffers from two main shortcomings in application to particle dynamics. These are (1) implicit relations between force and displacement and (2) representation of a two-particle system as a conservative system. These shortcomings were treated in [2] by first deriving a highly accurate approximate equation based on the JKR theory in which force and displacement are explicitly related and the extension of the JKR theory wherein the Kelving-Voigt viscoelastic model is used instead of the elastic model. This formulation provides an opportunity to study particle-particle collision dynamics, which is the study in the present paper.

Abstract:
This paper describes an experimental and numerical study of the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOX) from the lean premixed (LPM) combustion of gaseous fuel alternatives to typical pipeline natural gas in a high intensity, single-jet stirred reactor (JSR). In this study, CH4 is mixed with varying levels CO2 and N2. NOX measurements are taken at a nominal combustion temperature of 1800 K, atmospheric pressure, and a reactor residence time of 3 ms. The experimental results show the following trends for NOX emissions as a function of fuel dilution: (1) more NOX is produced per kg of CH4 consumed with the addition of a diluent, (2) the degree of increase in emission index is dependent on the chosen diluent; N2 dilution increases NOX production more effectively than equivalent CO2 dilution. Chemical kinetic modelling suggests that NOX production is less effective for the mixture diluted with CO2 due to both a decrease in N2 concentration and the ability of CO2 to deplete the radicals taking part in NOX formation chemistry. In order to gain insight on flame structure within the JSR, three dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations are carried out for LPM CH4 combustion. A global CH4 combustion mechanism is used to model the chemistry. While it does not predict intermediate radicals, it does predict CH4 and CO oxidation quite well. The CFD model illustrates the flow-field, temperature variation, and flame structure within the JSR. A 3-element chemical reactor network (CRN), including detailed chemistry, is constructed using insight from detailed spatial measurements of the reactor, the results of CFD simulations, and classical fluid dynamic correlations. GRI 3.0 is used in the CRN to model the NOX emissions for all fuel blends. The experimental and modelling results are in good agreement and suggest the underlying chemical kinetic reasons for the trends.

Abstract:
Fischer-Tropsch liquid fuels synthesized from syngas, also called synthetic paraffinic jet fuel (SPK), can be used to replace conventional petroleum-derived fuels in jet engines. Whereas currently syngas is mostly produced from coal of natural gas, its production from biomass has been reported. These synthetic liquid fuels contain a very high fraction of iso-alkanes, while conventional jet fuels contain large fractions of n-alkanes, cycloalkanes (naphtenes), and aromatics. In that contest, a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) was used to study the kinetics of oxidation of a 100% SPK and a 50/50 SPK/Jet A-1mixture over a broad range of experimental conditions (10 atm, 560 to 1030K, equivalence ratios of 0.5 to 2, 1000 ppm of fuel). The temperature was varied step-wise, keeping the mean residence time in the JSR constant and equal to 1s. Three combustion regimes were observed over this temperature range: the cool-flame oxidation regime (560–740K), the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) regime (660–740K), and the high-temperature oxidation regime (>740K). More than 15 species were identified and measured by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (CG/MS), flame ionization detection (FID), and thermal conductivity detection (TCD). The results consisting of concentration profiles of reactants, stable intermediates and products as a function of temperature showed similar kinetics of oxidation for the fuels considered, although the 100% SPK was more reactive. A surrogate detailed chemical kinetic reaction mechanism was used to model these experiments and ignition experiments taken from the literature. The kinetic modeling showed reasonable agreement between the data and the computations whereas model improvements could be achieved using more appropriate surrogate model fuels. Kinetic computations involving reaction paths analyses and sensitivity analyses were used to interpret the results.
