Abstract:
On college campuses today, student services staff (administrators and support staff) and faculty members are not only interacting with students but also with their parents. College employee interactions with prospective students and their parents may be common during information sessions and open houses. However, outside of the recruitment season, less is known about the experiences of student affairs staff and faculty who interact with parents. Through semi-structured interviews, this study examined employees’ interactions with parents of students at four colleges of applied arts and technolo

Abstract:
A gap exists between research on learning and research on interest. Cognitive researchers rarely consider motivational processes, and interest researchers rarely consider cognitive process. However, it is essential to consider both since achievement and interest are in fact intertwined. In this paper we (1) discuss a theoretical model that intertwines cognitive and interest development, (2) describe how that model informed the development of educational materials, and (3) report on the results of the cognitive components of a randomized research study examining the impact of text genre on lear

This paper explores the opportunities and affordances presented when historically and systemically excluded (HSE) youth gain access to high-powered technology and tools in their school environment through an innovative program. Many research studies have shown the challenges HSE youth face in accessing high-value occupations, particularly in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Despite the increasing demand for STEM jobs, pathways from schools to careers in these fields often lack effectiveness, especially among HSE students. The Reinvent the Classroom initia

The demand for mental health support in universities is on the rise and university services are struggling to keep up. Being able to provide appropriate support and counselling services in a timely manner is crucial to support students in engaging with and managing their university studies. The Griffith University Student Health, Counselling and Wellbeing team, in collaboration with Griffith Health Clinics, has implemented a student intern-led, interdisciplinary, cross-departmental, and iterative program to support students’ wellbeing while awaiting formal counselling services. Abstract:
Collective efficacy has become a prominent feature in educational policy and practice with growing evidence that a strong sense of collective efficacy amongst educators leads to better outcomes for students. With growing interest in the importance of collective efficacy and how to cultivate it, the Collective Efficacy Tracking Tool was created to address challenges associated with understanding, diagnosing, and developing collective efficacy. This Framework describes the development of the Collective Efficacy Tracking Tool, defining collective efficacy in a way that it can be operationalised t

Abstract:
Two studies were conducted to examine how individual interest predicts interactions with domain content and subsequent free-choice exploration. Particular focus was on learners’ acquisition of knowledge and identification of content that triggered curiosity. College student participants reported their individual interest, learned about a topic in ecology (Study 1, N = 85) and astronomy (Study 2, N = 184), responded to prompts for memory of the learning content and curiosity questions, and then had the opportunity to explore additional content related to the topic. In both studies individual in
