Abstract:
Context Collegiate student-athletes continue competing after experiencing symptoms of a concussion. Self-report of concussion symptoms is a critical element of the recovery process. Identifying factors related to concussion disclosure can aid in encouraging self-reporting. Objective To use latent profile analysis to categorize and describe athletes based on factors related to concussion disclosure. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Web-based survey. Patients or Other Participants A total of 2 881 (52.4% female; 65.3% in-season; 40% collision sport) student-athletes from 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association member institutions. Main Outcome Measure(s) Student-athlete concussion expectations, attitudes, and norms were the profile variables and reporting intentions served as the distal outcome variable. We conducted latent profile analysis using select profile variables to determine the optimal number of classes. Differences in concussion-reporting intentions by profile assignment were then examined. Lastly, the extent to which a student-athlete's sex, season status, and level of contact predicted his or her intentions to report a concussion within each profile was investigated. Results Five unique student-athlete profiles emerged, including 1 profile that was most risky and another that was least risky. Females had significantly higher odds of being in the least risky profile. Those participating in collision sports had significantly higher odds of being in the top 2 most risky profiles. Contact-sport and in-season athletes were less likely to be in the least risky profile. Conclusions With a better understanding of student-athlete profiles, athletic trainers have an opportunity to encourage concussion disclosure. Prompt disclosure would allow student-athletes to begin the return-to-play protocol in a more timely manner.

Abstract:
The rationale behind this research is based on the claim that the students actively involved in university-geared extra-curricular activities (ECAs) in foreign languages gain higher employability than their uninvolved peers. With the recruitment market toughening and the universities’ budgets tightening, the role of ECAs in increasing a student’s profile needs revisiting. This paper examines the correlation between participation in free-of-charge and fee-paying ECAs in foreign languages and greater opportunities for better employment. In recognizing the value of extra-curricular input in their future, student’s views of themselves are reshaped. This outcome results in an increase in the number of student-led versus teacher-initiated activities, thus developing students’ autonomy, critical thinking, and cognitive skills. This article reports on the review and findings of the benefits of ECAs in a Russian economic university. The survey shows that employer-focused ECAs in foreign languages unfailingly provide university graduates with an added edge. The paper concludes with a proposal that inexperienced job-hunters have more confidence to seek better employment when armed with a portfolio of achievements in ECAs and non-degree courses.

Abstract:
This study is a pioneer study that seeks to explore the association between supervision outputs and the nature of the supervision (by e-mail, face-to-face, the student’s independence). In addition, the association between the supervising lecturer’s personal background (gender, age), professional background (faculty, tenure, excellence in teaching), and the supervision outputs (articles written, presentations at conferences) and nature of the supervision is explored. The purpose of the study is to explore items in depth so that they can be used in developing a questionnaire exploring the association between supervision outputs and the nature of the supervision. The research findings show, for various items, significant interactions between age and gender, excellence in teaching, and tenure. Significant interactions were also found between gender and faculty, as well as between age and excellence in teaching. Differences were also found between faculties. The findings of this study might have practical consequences for establishing the output-guided association in research supervision, as well as for establishing the practical association between the nature of the supervision and the lecturer’s personal background, professional background, the supervision outputs, and the nature of the supervision. These findings constitute a foundation for methodological thinking concerning supervision by staff members, a subject that has considerable meaning for the initial steps taken by young student researchers and for the systematic establishment of the pattern of academic supervision, which although not frontal teaching may be even more demanding.

Abstract:
A Virtual Reality application was developed to be used as an immersive virtual learning strategy for Oculus Rift S Virtual Reality glasses and through Leap Motion Controller™ infrared sensors, focused on students of the Automotive Systems Engineering academic program, as a practical teaching-learning tool in the context of Education 4.0 and the pandemic caused by COVID-19 that has kept schools closed since March 2020. The technological pillars of Industry 4.0 were used to profile students so that they can meet the demands of their professional performance at the industrial level. Virtual Reality (VR) plays a very important role for the production-engineering sector in areas such as design and autonomous cars, as well as in training and driving courses. The VR application provides the student with a more immersive and interactive experience, supported by 3D models of both the main parts that make up the four-stroke combustion engine and the mechanical workshop scenario; it allows the student to manipulate the main parts of the four-stroke combustion engine through the Oculus Rift S controls and the Leap Motion Controller™ infrared sensors, and relate them to the operation of the engine, through the animation of its operation and the additional information shown for each part that makes it up in the application.

Abstract:
Gravity in the head-to-toe direction, known as +Gz (G force), forces blood to pool in the lower body. Fighter pilots experience decreases in blood pressure when exposed to hypergravity in flight. Human centrifuge has been used to examine the G tolerance and anti-G straining maneuver (AGSM) techniques of military pilots. Some factors that may affect G tolerance have been reported but are still debated. The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological responses and anthropometric factors correlated with G tolerance. We retrospectively reviewed the training records of student pilots who underwent high G training. Variables were collected to examine their correlations with the outcome of 7.5G sustained for 15 s (7.5G profile). There were 873 trainees who underwent 7.5G profile training, 44 trainees (5.04%) could not sustain the test for 15 s. The group with a small heart rate (HR) increase (less than 10%) during the first 1–5 s of the 7.5G profile had a nearly ten-fold higher failing chance compared with the large HR increase group (adjusted odds ratio: 9.91; 95% confidence interval: 4.11–23.88). The chances of failure were inversely related to the HR increase percentage (p for trend <0.001). Factors, including body mass index, relaxed and straining G tolerance, and AGSM, were found to be negatively correlated with the outcome.

Abstract:
The impact of the family environment, the mode and the quality of parental stimulation may have a decisive role in the student?s capacity development and realization of given capabilities, and affects particularly the level and the quality of his/her academic attainment. A student?s academic attainment is conditioned by educational aspirations formed in a dynamic interaction with stimulating aspects of the family context. The aims of our study were: to examine the students? attitudes towards schooling, and to obtain answers to the question: which stimulating aspects of family context are the most predictable for the development of educational aspirations, i.e. attitudes towards school and gaining knowledge, educational interests and plans for further education. The sample comprised 1.464 eighth-grade students, aged 15, from 34 primary schools in Serbia. The data were collected by the use of questionnaires filled in by the students and school principals. The results indicate a trend of interrelatedness of cognitively and educationally favorable conditions within the family and positive attitudes towards school, attainment, high aspirations and cognitive and intellectual interests for out-of-school activities. It can be concluded that family stimulation is the resultant of the influence of cultural and educational profile of the family and active parental attitudes regarding education and attainment of their children. The findings could have practical implications in the domain of parents/school cooperation, not only in order to increase the awareness of the importance of active participation of both parties, but also to provide useful guidelines for developing optimal contents and procedures. .

Abstract:
Purpose: Deterministic inputs, noisy and gate (DINA) model is one of the promising statistical means for providing useful diagnostic information about a student’ level of achievement. Diagnostics information is core element for improving learning instead of selection. Educators often want to be provided with diagnostic information which how a given examinees did on each content strand, called diagnostic profiles. The purpose of this paper is to classify examinees in different content domains using the DINA model. Methods: This paper analyzed data from the Korean medical licensing examination (KMLE) with 360 items and 3259 examinees. The application study estimate examinees parameters as well as item characteristics. The guessing and slipping parameters of each item were estimated. DINA model was conducted as a statistical analysis. Results: The output table shows the examples of some items, which can be used for the check of item quality. In addition, the probabilities of being mastery at each content domain were estimated, which indicates the mastery profile of each examinee. Classifications accuracy for 8 contents ranged from .849 to .972 and classification consistency for 8 contents ranged from .839 to .994. As a result, classification reliability in a CDM was very high for 8 contents in KMLEConclusion: This mastery profile can be useful diagnostic information for each examinee in terms of the content domains of KMLE. The master profile from KMLE provides each examinee’s mastery profile in terms of each content domain. The individual mastery profile allows educators and examinees to understand that which domain(s) should be improved for mastering all domains in KMLE. In addition, the results found that all items are reasonable level with respect to item parameters character.

Abstract:

This work aims to identify and describe discourse (s) and voice (s) of students and teachers from Instituto Federal da Paraíba, Picuí campus, about the main teaching aim of the institution. This study focused on the main teaching objective of IFPB in order to help the understanding of the advantages and drawbacks in the teaching process as well as the profile of the student that is approved in IFPB selection process. It is a descriptive-interpretative research whose corpus is composed of two sets of data. The first one is documentary and concerns the statute of IFPB and the public notice of the Selection Process for Presential Technical High School Courses . The second one concerns the answers to the questionnaire given by students and teachers from IFPB-campus Picuí. The Students are from Geology, Buildings and Information Technology courses, from the first and fourth years. The research is based on speech studies (FAIRCLOUGH2001), within the scope of the analysis of textually oriented discourse or critical discourse analysis, and in the concept of “voice and character”, as presented by Mey (2001) , in the context of social pragmatics. The data show that regarding the official documents of the institution, the main teaching objective of IFPB has already been consolidated, but in practice there still seems to be some disagreements with the official discourse because most of the students want quality education to pass the National High School Exam (In Portuguese, it is used the abbreviation “Enem”). This is the characteristic that defines IFPB, according to the students, and not the technical or professionalization teaching, therefore the voice of the society is that that IFPB offers students a great quality education . Some teachers also believe that , it is necessary to prepare student for Enem.

Abstract:
This dissertation is based on a theoretical and empirical synthesis. It offers a theoretical discussion of the burnout syndrome and its influences on surroundings, while the empirical part is performed through questionnaire research, where 69 respondents took part mainly from the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. The primary aim of this investigation is to illuminate attitudes of students regarding their readiness to face the burnout syndrome in school conditions and to collect information in regards to their reaction to this situation. The evaluated data, gained through the use of open questions, is represented in the charts. It investigates the advantages and disadvantages that the students feel before the start of their career and which can affect their career growth; or their way to failure. It is apparent from the results that the theoretical knowledge of the problematic issues are on a very good level. Most students believe, that they are well aware of what the burnout syndrome is about and that in case of it happening, they would know how to deal with it and where to look for help.

Abstract:
AbstractOriginally, the concept of resilience refers to one’s capacity to cope with unexpected shocks and unpredictable situations. Originating from ecological theories, the approach has gained ground in social sciences. In the context of education, the concept has been applied to explain how disadvantaged students can overcome structural constraints and become educationally successful and socially mobile (Werner, E. E., Vulnerable but invincible: a longitudinal study of resilient children and youth. McGraw-Hill, New York, 1982; Masten A. S., American Psychologist 56: 227–238, 2001; Reid, R., Botterrill L. C., Australian Journal of Public Administration 72:31–40, 2013; Máté, D., Erdélyi Társadalom 13:43–55, 2015).This paper is based on the analysis of the Hungarian National Assessment of Basic Competences (NABC) database which has been conducted annually since 2001. We created a typology of school resilience based on the schools’ social and ethnic profile as well as their performance indicators. We defined those schools resilient which over perform others with similar social intake, and we also identified irresilient schools which underperform others with similar social intake. The school types were created by correlating the socio-economic status index (SES) and school performance.Since the NABC database provides us with data on the estimated rate of Roma students in each school, it is possible to take into account the schools’ ethnic intake in the analysis of resilience. We conducted statistical analyses to compare the performance of resilient and irresilient schools in the light of the ratio of Roma students. Finally, we seek answers to the question whether ethnic segregation correlates with school achievement in Hungary. We could identify some crucial institutional factors contributing to resilience (or school success) in the case of schools with relatively high proportion of Roma students.

Abstract:
This chapter describes a historical inquiry project that used a social networking site (www.ning.com) to engage students in writing both traditionally and multimodally about the 1960's. Students were provided basic demographic information about a fictional individual living in the 1960's and then were instructed to build a social networking profile as they conducted inquiry of the 1960's over the course of eight weeks. Data were drawn from screen capture videos and semi-structured interviews (n=8) as well as online artifacts (n=185) that high school students generated to construct a profile page akin to Facebook for the project. This project demonstrated how student writing in a history class was mediated by the social networking task and the variety of multimodal texts that they could use to represent their historical inquiry.

Abstract:
Social media are playing an increasing role in today’s living. The social media platforms allow users to search, create, share, collaborate, and organise contents among them, and at the same time provide virtual self-presentation and self-disclosure of oneself. Social media were also claimed to give implications to human beings with regards to personality, yet these variables have not much been emphasised in previous studies. Thus, it is important to highlight the implications of social media on users’ personality. Given the issues and challenges faced by the country in profiling the adoption of social media and its implications in view of the perspective of personality, it is timely and significantly important to undertake this research in Malaysia. The objective of this chapter is to discuss a research conducted recently to determine the relationships between social media and personality traits. The specific objectives of this study are to identify the profile of social media adoption among students in Malaysia, including duration, frequency of use, purpose, and person/s that introduced the social media, and to determine the relationships between social media and personality traits.

Abstract:
I asked a professor, visiting from a nation well regarded for its hardworking ethos, whether in his search for ever better catalysts for some synthesis or other, he used experimental design. His answer was, “I have many research students. They work very hard!” Many people believe that an infinite number of monkeys and typewriters would produce the works of Shakespeare, but these days few organizations have the luxury of great numbers of researchers tweaking processes at random in order to make them ever more efficient. The approach of experimental scientists is to systematically change aspects of a process until the results improve. In this chapter I look at this approach from a statistical viewpoint and show how a structured methodology, called experimental design, can save time and effort and arrive at the best (statistically defined) result. It may be a revelation to some readers that the tried-and-trusted “change one factor at a time” approach might yield incorrect results, after requiring more experiments than is necessary. In the sections that follow, I explain how experimental design entails more than just having an idea of what you are going to do before beginning an experiment. Optimization is the maximizing or minimizing a response by changing one or more input variables. In this chapter optimization is synonymous with maximization, as any minimization can be turned into a maximization by a straightforward transformation: Minimization of cost can be seen as maximization of profit; minimization of waste turns into maximization of production; minimization of f(x) is maximization of 1/f(x) or -f(x). Before describing methods of effecting such an optimization, the term optimization must be carefully defined, and what is being optimized must be clearly understood. There are some texts on experimental design available for chemists, although often the subject is treated, as it is here, within a broader context. A good starter for the basics of factorial designs is the Analytical Chemistry Open Learning series (Morgan 1991). Reasonably comprehensive coverage is given in Massart et al.’s (1997) two-volume series, and also in a book from the Royal Society of Chemistry (Mullins 2003).

Abstract:
The Bologna process involved a strategic change that included in its policy agenda a move towards a student-centred scenario. In addition, a reasonable association may be assumed to exist between teaching development programmes and student learning outcomes. This research study focused on the impact that a brief yet intense formal and non-qualifying teaching programme, delivered as a seminar and supported by the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in Spain, had on teachers’ approaches to teaching measured by the most recent Spanish adaptation of the Approaches to Teaching Inventory (S-ATI-20). Results showed that there was a positive and statistically significant impact of the training programme on approaches to teaching measured by the information transmission/teacher-focused scale (ITTF). The poor attendance rate to this non-compulsory programme, course duration, participant profile, psychometric structure of the questionnaire used, and the relationship between teaching development programmes and approaches to teaching are discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The exciting contributions to science and education made by radio astronomy over the last three decades would not have been possible without the development of radio telescopes of increasing sensitivity and power. The Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) is located near Brevard, North Carolina. It was built in 1962 and was a facility for tracking the spacecraft of the NASA Mercury and Gemini missions. In the late 1970's it was used by the National Security Agency for monitoring Soviet satellite activity and was decommissioned in 1992. It was later purchased by PARI and is now used for astronomical education and research as a not for profit organization. During the spring of 2005, Mr. Don Cline, President of PARI and William Craft, began discussing ways in which engineering students could both learn about radio astronomy and contribute to the development to the educational and research programs at PARI. Since North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) State University is one of the closest engineering colleges, they concluded that student design projects that focused on the enhancement of radio astronomy equipment would both help PARI and provide a challenging capstone design experience to engineering students. The A&T capstone program covers two semesters and six semester credits, and among an initial listing of potential design experiences, we selected four that would enhance the operation of the two 26-meter PARI radio-telescopes. These two twenty-six meter radio-telescopes are known as 26E (East) and 26W (West). Both radio telescopes have roughly the same size and construction. The photo schematic (Figure 1) is representative of each. Note the major (lower) axis is 13 meters from the ground, and the minor (upper) axis is 20 meters from the ground. Both are at right angles to each other and parallel to the ground plane when the dish is in the upright position. The top of the instrument cage is 37 meters high.
