Stephens, Paul. "UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT SATISFACTION: INVESTIGATING THE MEASUREMENT, DIMENSIONALITY, AND NATURE OF THE CONSTRUCT USING THE RASCH MODEL." UKnowledge, 2014. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/epe_etds/25.

Abstract:
Of the many potential and espoused outcomes of higher education, it was satisfaction that rose to prominence for Alexander Astin, stating, “it is difficult to argue that student satisfaction can be legitimately subordinated to any other education outcome” (1993, p. 273). This high endorsement of the construct of satisfaction is backed by a plethora of arguments of its importance for college and university decision makers. A thorough and accurate rendering of student satisfaction measurement is requisite. To calculate student satisfaction as the magnitude of item endorsement leaves a measure that is sample specific. The goal of a universal and unidimensional measure is only advanced by determining which items do or do not contribute to a model of linearity and unidimensionality. This research utilizes the Rasch model to advance exploration of the variable of student satisfaction. Using data collected from the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory, analysis was conducted to determine if reported ascribed importance and experienced satisfaction adhered to the assumption of the Rasch model. Results suggest that student satisfaction and ascribed importance do adhere to these assumptions of measurement, but only after ordinal rankings of dissatisfaction are collapsed into a single entity. The determined separation of satisfaction and dissatisfaction likens Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory. Additional discussion and implications focus on contrasting analysis when applying the Rasch analysis relative to classical test theory, recommendations of modified instrument scaling to better capture the construct, implications for higher education, and heightened understanding of student satisfaction as a whole.

Abstract:
Institutions of higher education around the country are concerned with student performance and retention. This dissertation used the theory of sense-of-community to explore how universities and colleges can influence student grade point averages and persistence to degree completion. Data were collected with the National Survey of Student Engagement at a Midwestern University. Factor analysis suggested four factors of sense-of-community within the National Survey of Student Engagement: Campus Social Milieu, Divergent Thinking, Institutional Involvement, and Relationship Quality. Results of further analyses indicated that sense-of-community influenced student satisfaction primarily through Relationship Quality and Campus Social Milieu. Sense-of-community also had a slight influence on student success. Campus Social Milieu, Relationship Quality, and Institutional Involvement seemed to affect grade point average; Relationship Quality and Institutional Involvement seemed to affect degree completion. Institutions wishing to assist the increase of academic achievement and graduation rates in addition to students’ satisfaction with their experience in college are advised to invest in programs and policies building sense-of-community among their students, faculty, and administrators.

Bradford, George. "A Relationship Study of Student Satisfaction With Learning Online and Cognitive Load." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2069.

Full text
Abstract:
This study sought to explore if a relationship exists between cognitive load and student satisfaction with learning online. The study separates academic performance (a.k.a., 'learning') from cognitive load and satisfaction to better distinguish influences on cognition (from cognitive load) and motivation (from satisfaction). Considerations that remain critical to the field of instructional design, as they apply to learning online, were described and used to guide a review of the literature to find directions to fulfill the goal of this study. A survey was conducted and 1,401 students responded to an instrument that contained 24 items. Multiple analysis techniques found a positive, moderate, and significant (p < .01) correlation between cognitive load and satisfaction. Most importantly, the results found that approximately 25% of the variance in student satisfaction with learning online can be explained by cognitive load. New constructs emerged from a Principal Components Analysis that suggest a refined view of student perspectives and potential improvement to guide instructional design. Further, a correlation, even a moderate one, has not previously been found between cognitive load and satisfaction. The significance of this finding presents new opportunities to study and improve online instruction. Multiple opportunities for future research are briefly discussed and guidelines for developing online course designs using interpretations of the emerged factors are made.

Li, Songze. "K-12 STEM Educators and the Inclusive Classroom." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/81252.

Full text
Abstract:
The United States public schools promote inclusion and educational equity among diverse student populations. Considerable and growing numbers of students with categorical disabilities and Limited English Proficiency (LEP) are enrolled in regular classrooms. The systemic barriers in learning that they have could impact teacher perceptions and decisions about teaching practices as well as the teaching profession. These students have challenged K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers to provide high-quality, accommodative service and equitable educational opportunities in an increasingly STEM-infused society. Professional development associated with teaching students with disabilities and LEP is critical to inform in-service STEM teachers with these students' learning needs and promote student success. Effective preparation and support help maintain teacher satisfaction and retention within the teaching profession. However, the levels and perceptions of STEM teacher participation in such professional development, and whether the service load and professional development regarding the concerned groups of students associated with teacher satisfaction and retention remain unclear. This dissertation addresses these issues through two research studies using secondary analysis of the 2011-2012 School and Staffing Survey Teacher Questionnaire (SASS TQ) national dataset. The first study focused on K-12 STEM educator participation and perceived utility regarding their professional development experience concerning students with disabilities and LEP. Quantitative analysis revealed an overall lower level of participation and perceived utility of such professional development for STEM educators compared to all other educators. The second study examined teacher satisfaction and intent to remain in teaching, as well as their relationships to teacher service load and professional development specific to students with disabilities and LEP. Results indicated that K-12 STEM educators were less likely to feel satisfied or intent on remaining in teaching, compared to the remainder of the teaching population. Logistic regressions showed that service load of students with LEP predicted teacher satisfaction and participation in professional development concerning students with disabilities associated with teacher intent to remain in STEM education, especially for science educators. These findings collectively suggested the necessity and demands of sufficient and useful professional development offerings regarding the two concerned groups of students in inclusive STEM education settings.

Brisbane, Rachel. "Motivations, Expectations & Satisfaction of International Postgraduate Students in Australian Universities." Thesis, 2020. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/41385/.

Full text
Abstract:
International higher education is a significant industry globally. For many Australian universities, as well as the Australian economy overall, it is one of their largest revenue streams. Considerable literature exists on the motivations of universities to export education, especially offshore, and what they consider to be important, but less is known as to whether these considerations are equally valued and prioritised by students coming onshore. It was established that the perspective of international students, as one of the largest stakeholder groups, is often lacking and at best, considered only at a statistical level. Literature on student satisfaction indicated limitations in conceptual approaches, methodology and reporting of outcomes. Furthermore, satisfaction surveys that focus exclusively on academic and operational factors may exclude factors students consider important contributors to satisfaction, that are potentially useful for universities seeking a competitive advantage. An opportunity was identified to expand the current research to utilise a more student-centred approach to understand how students prioritise and other factors contributing to satisfaction that could valuably rebalance the current bias towards institutional perspectives. As many student satisfaction surveys include large numbers of undergraduate student responses, which effectively dilute the experience of other student demographics, this research focused on international postgraduate students. The aims were to investigate nuances within the literature on students’ motivations – for reputation, immigration and affordability. These were: how students prioritise these motivations in their decision making, whether there were other student determined factors important to satisfaction, if campus facilities contribute to greater satisfaction levels, how mobile students are in their study practices, and explore relationships between switching behaviours, and the resulting satisfaction and dissatisfaction. A qualitative survey of international postgraduate students, research and coursework, studying at Australian universities was conducted between June and December 2019, thematically analysed and supported with descriptive statistics. For both research and coursework groups, it was found that reputation, affordability and immigration opportunities were secondary motivators for students, with the primary motivation to improve employment opportunities. However, overall affordability often becomes an issue once studies are underway. Student-identified factors contributing to satisfaction included the experience of classroom diversity, social connections, the western learning environment and opportunities for professional work in conjunction with study. Regarding their preferences these students were less likely to take up options to study more flexibly, preferring to study where there are full campus facilities. It was found that switching behaviours were not a reliable indicator of satisfaction. They merely highlighted the effectiveness of structural barriers (such as administrative paperwork), a lack of alternatives offering significant improvement for the effort of changing and at best, students who were more or less satisfied but had already decided to change prior to enrolling as it was a route to the preferred university. However, when students were dissatisfied with their university, the universities’ reputation became more important, becoming a critical motivator to persevere and complete the qualification. An area for improvement lies with international postgraduate research students whose experiences were more polarised.

Boyer, Luc. "Student Satisfaction Surveys and Nonresponse: Ignorable Survey, Ignorable Nonresponse." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/4407.

Full text
Abstract:
With an increasing reliance on satisfaction exit surveys to measure how university alumni qualify their experiences during their degree program, it is uncertain whether satisfaction is sufficiently salient, for some alumni, to generate distinguishable satisfaction scores between respondents and nonrespondents. This thesis explores whether, to what extent, and why nonresponse to student satisfaction surveys makes any difference to our understanding of student university experiences. A modified version of Michalos’ multiple discrepancies theory was utilized as the conceptual framework to ascertain which aspects of the student experience are likely to be nonignorable, and which are likely to be ignorable. In recognition of the hierarchical structure of educational organizations, the thesis explores the impact of alumnus and departmental characteristics on nonresponse error. The impact of survey protocols on nonresponse error is also explored. Nonignorable nonresponse was investigated using a multi-method approach. Quantitative analyses were based on a combined dataset gathered by the Graduate Student Exit Survey, conducted at each convocation over a period of three years. These data were compared against basic enrolment variables, departmental characteristics, and the public version of Statistic Canada’s National Graduate Survey. Analyses were conducted to ascertain whether nonresponse is nonignorable at the descriptive and analytical levels (form resistant hypothesis). Qualitative analyses were based on nine cognitive interviews from both recent and soon-to-be alumni. Results were severely weakened by external and internal validity issues, and are therefore indicative but not conclusive. The findings suggest that nonrespondents are different from respondents, satisfaction intensity is weakly related to response rate, and that the ensuing nonresponse error in the marginals can be classified, albeit not fully, as missing at random. The form resistant hypothesis remains unaffected for variations in response rates. Cognitive interviews confirmed the presence of measurement errors which further weakens the case for nonignorability. An inadvertent methodological alignment of response pool homogeneity, a misspecified conceptual model, measurement error (dilution), and a non-salient, bureaucratically-inspired, survey topic are proposed as the likely reasons for the findings of ignorability. Methodological and organizational implications of the results are also discussed.

The purpose of this study is to explore the implementation of Taipei City digital student ID cards and the parent-teacher-student satisfaction at the policy. Through the literature review, the techniques and development of Taipei City digital student ID cards were found and induced, and then the questionnaire was designed to carry on the study. The results of this study were obtained through questionnaires sent to the teachers, students, and parents of the elementary schools in Taipei City’s 12 administrative districts to survey the implementation and satisfaction of Taipei City digital student ID cards. The stratified random sampling was adopted. About the students and parents, each district randomly sampled 2 schools, 60 questionnaires were distributed to each school, and the total came to 1,440 respectively. Concerning the teachers, questionnaires were sent to each school according to the number of teachers, but the teachers unrelated to the affair of digital student ID cards were not included; at most 50 questionnaires were sent to each school, and at most 1,200 questionnaires were distributed. Besides the quantitative statistics compiled from the valid questionnaires, the qualitative open questions and suggestions in the questionnaire were used to have further understanding of how the policy affected the parents, teachers, and students. The results of the study indicate: 1.Except the fourth dimension (the convenience of digital student ID cards and other functions), the teachers tend to be unsatisfied with the other dimensions. On the whole, the teachers do not feel satisfied with the implementation of digital student ID cards. 2.apart from the first dimension (privacy and personal safety), the students and parents tend to be satisfied with the other dimensions. To sum up, the students and parents feel satisfied with the implementation of digital student ID cards. 3.It is not thought to be good enough that swiping digital student ID cards replaces the roll call in elementary schools. 4.Regarding the additional functions of digital student ID cards, if there are proper guidance and supplementary measures, the convenience and satisfaction will be expected. Finally, according to the results of the study, concrete proposals are offered to the teachers, students, and parents, and the future studies on the implementation of digital student ID cards.

This study aims to analyse the written and spoken texts of the Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) materials, and then discuss whether the materials provide sufficient resources to develop learners’ competence and skills; as well as investigate students’ learning satisfaction with teaching materials and expression of their opinion. The text analysis is based on María Álida’s (2006) research methods in her doctoral dissertation “Análisis tipológico, pragmático y lingüístico de los textos de unidades didácticas específicas de los manuales de E/LE”. It adopted Hymes’ (1972) SPEAKING model and also refered to the description of different kinds of competence in The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment; simultaneously we use this model to analyse the SFL textbook, Español Lengua Viva. As to satisfaction survey, the data is obtained by questionnaires which is gathered from 152 students of Spanish Department at Providence University. The findings show that the eight unit of Español Lengua Viva 2 –Buscar trabajo follows the norms of The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment: (1) the content and activities can promote student’s general ability and communication skills; (2) texts in the content are "true" and "natural" that help students applying what they have learned in real life; (3) the manual provides adequate language resources as well as related information to cope with daily life situation. The average of student’s learning satisfaction for materials is 3.32, but students suggested that it can provide more grammar explanation should be increased. Finally, with regard to the results that we have obtained, we hope this mode of analysis could be a reference of evaluation about Spanish teaching materials.

The purpose of this study is to explore the learning needs of elementary gifted students, , as well as acceptance of Learning Satisfaction to resource program, and to understand different gender, region, grades gifted students' learning needs and acceptance of Gifted Education Learning Satisfaction circumstances. The study selected students from northern Taiwan (Taipei, New Taipei City), central Taiwan (Taichung City, Changhua County), and southern Taiwan (Tainan City, Kaohsiung City) whom had been placed in the general intelligence gifted resource room in elementary school from grade 4 to 6, totaling 805 people. Using questionnaire survey "gifted student learning needs survey" and a Chinese translation version of a foreign scale called “My Class Activities” to collect data. Then the data results will be processed according to its mean, standard deviation, percent, t-test and one-way ANOVA statistical methods for analysis. The main results of this study are as follows: 1. Gifted students held a “necessary” view for learning content, learning process, learning environment and learning outcomes. In four dimensions, the average scores high to low were “learning outcomes”, “learning environment”, “learning process” and “learning content”. 2. The elementary school gifted students' top ten learning needs were, “to have a hands-on opportunity to experiment or operation”, “teachers or schools can provide a variety of extracurricular educational activities”, “courses content to be novel”, “technology equipmenxt is well-prepared”, “class atmosphere is humorous”, “learning content is diversified, not monotonous”, “school environment is friendly and respectful”, “books or teaching aids are adequate”, “teaching content in here helps me grow up” and “teaching content inspires my creativity”. 3. Female gifted students scored significantly higher than male students in “learning process”, “learning environment” and “learning outcomes” of learning needs. The learning needs were no significant difference in all dimensions; In the part of different grades, “learning process” dimension of the fourth grade gifted students scored significantly higher than the sixth grade gifted students, in “learning outcomes” dimension of the fourth grade scored significantly higher than fifth and sixth grade, and fifth grade also scored significantly higher than the sixth grade. 4. The suervy showed a high learning satisfaction from gifted students in elementary school, and the overall average score was “agree” level, from high to low were “pleasure”, “interested”, “choice” and “challenge”. 5. There was no significant difference when it comes to survey in different gender gifted students. Although the literature related to service failure and the recovery institution was plentiful in the past, the most of research assumption had the same premise that service recovery institution was effective and less inklings to how the company recovered again if the service recovery institution was under the customer expectation. This kind of recovery failure after service failure is called “double deviation” (Binter et al., 1990). Fern and Johnston (1999) consider that if firms take the effective recovery method after the first service failure, it may retain the customer in the future. Therefore, the expected service recovery in the double deviation is necessary to investigate. According to research motive and the goal of the above, this research took “double deviation” as a premise, using the experimental design and the questionnaire to carry on two stages of the research design. The first step is to realize the complaint behaviors from the participants and the severity of failure by the questionnaire on the virtual situation and to obtain how the customer thinks about the service recovery by script analysis. At the second step, we use 2*2 experimental design to manipulate four scripts of recovery service with the order of severity and disconfirmation so that we can validate how the difference of the script of customer expectation affects the consciousness response. There are four conclusions from this study: (1) the more severity of service failure, the more intensity of complaint behavior. Abstract With the increase in social diversification and specialization in school education, social issues derived from school dropouts have become a serious problem that cannot be solved by families, schools, or social welfare agencies independently. The dropout problem also concerns a country’s future human resources and quality which consequently has received more and more global attention. As the researcher currently works in Zhongzheng and Wanhua Districts in Taipei City, the present study will examine welfare demands, welfare service resources utilization as well as welfare satisfaction from the perspective of junior high school dropouts in these two districts. The present study uses survey questionnaires with a total effective sample of 63 participants (N=63). The analysis results (in percentages) indicate that dropouts reported the highest welfare demand in the area of “leisure venues” (73.0%), followed by “vocational skill training” (68.3%) and “leisure and recreation” (60.3%). In terms of user satisfaction in welfare services, they reported that they are most satisfied with “leisure venues” (68.3%) followed by “leisure and recreation” (60.3%) and “employment counseling services” (38.1%). Based on the results, it is indicative that junior high school dropouts have higher demand in terms of leisure and recreation, and also require higher applied values in future employment preparations, which in turn resulted in relatively higher degree of satisfaction. However, they are less familiar with and show lower use of other service areas such as academic counseling and tutoring, personal safety, and financial aid. Therefore, it is necessary to further review the welfare services provided by the government which might fail to meet the needs of dropouts or lack publicity. In order to thoroughly implement the services and care for dropouts in the future, it is instrumental to fulfill mental health maintenance and academic counseling, enhance and enrich leisure venues and recreational activities, and strengthen the function of school Counseling Room services. In addition, the cross-department supervisor committees should meet regularly (quarterly) to coordinate, review, and suggest improvement strategies. Despite outstanding employment opportunities and high demand to address the global nursing shortage, men who consider becoming nurses are less likely to enroll in and to graduate from nursing programs. Many barriers that men commonly encounter during nursing education have been found in the literature; however, there is a lack of theoretically based research that examines factors that help men succeed as they study nursing. Based on a conceptual model derived from O’Lynn’s construct of male friendliness in nursing education and Frankl’s theory of will to meaning and purpose in life, this study examined facilitators for men during nursing education. This was accomplished through the development and psychometric testing of the Survey of Facilitators for Men (SFM) in a sample of 145 men in nursing. Strong evidence of reliability and validity was provided for the SFM consisting of three subscales (Internal facilitators, External Connections facilitators, and Institutional facilitators). Internal facilitators consist of intrapersonal strengths, experiences, and motivators. External Connections facilitators are interpersonal connections that emerge from relationships that men develop. Institutional facilitators involve structural or organizational aspects of institutions that ease barriers. Testing provided satisfactory evidence of internal consistency (α = .85) and test-retest reliability (intraclass coefficient = .72; confidence interval = 0.57–0.83). Dimensionality of three facilitator subscales was supported by Principle Axis Factoring with Varimax rotation and satisfactory factor loadings (.49–.72). Support for the conceptual model was provided using multiple regressions explaining 17% of the variance in purpose in life [F(4, 140) = 6.99, p < .001], 13% of the variance in GPA [F(6, 114) = 2.88, p < .01], and 49% of the variance in perception of nursing success [F(9, 128) = 13.42, p < .001]. Purpose in life was associated with Internal facilitators and comfortable income, GPA was associated with External Connections facilitators and age at BSN, while perception of nursing success was associated with purpose in life, holding an MSN, having a comfortable income, and having children. Future research is warranted to determine the usefulness of the SFM in designing strategies to recruit and retain men in nursing programs.

According to “Implementation Regulations Governing the Reorganization of Junior Colleges into Technical Colleges and the Establishment of Junior College Divisions by Technical Colleges and Technical Universities”, the reorganization of vocational and technological colleges and universities began from 1996 in Taiwan. After the institution status change, 15 vocational high schools were reorganized into junior colleges--14 nursing junior colleges and 1 junior general college. The study surveyed departments of non-foreign languages of day division in 6 junior colleges. School, teacher and student questionnaires were designed for the study. Because of the small quantity of school and teacher questionnaire data, the analysis was used to explain the conclusions gathered from student questionnaire data and Japanese education in junior colleges. Student questionnaire data was analyzed by using SPSS 18.0 software. Item analysis and factor analysis was made in questionnaire pretesting. After deleting inappropriate items, confirming reliability and validity of student questionnaire, the official questionnaire was distributed to the 6 junior colleges in order to investigate the variance of two pairs: ○1personal backgrounds of learners and learning motivation ○2personal backgrounds of learners and satisfaction. The third purpose is to explore the relationship between learning motivation and satisfaction. The results of this study are the following: 1.”Wanting to travel to Japan” is the strongest learning motivation and “I attend Japanese classes all the time” has the highest average of satisfaction in junior colleges. 2. There are no marked differences in “gender, experience of visiting Japan” between personal backgrounds of learners and learning motivation, and in “gender, experience of visiting Japan, having Japanese friends, departments” between personal backgrounds of learners and satisfaction. There are marked differences in the other variables. 3. There is a positive correlation between learning motivation and satisfaction. This study suggests that raising and keeping motivation of learners is contributive to satisfaction and learning effects.
