Abstract:
Background: The level of personal hygiene has a strong bearing on preventive capacity for many diseases and hence the assessment of its level assumes great significance. The school being a strong base for hygienic practices, the present study aimed to assess the level of personal hygiene and its associated factors as well as its effect on morbidity level of school children in a rural belt of southern Rajasthan. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted among 250 students studying in classes VIII to XII in 3 different schools of southern Rajasthan from November 2018 to February 2019.The data was obtained by interview method using pretested questionnaire which included socio-demographic factors, the hygienic practices and occurrence of diseases as dichotomous questions. The association of the attributes was tested through Chi-square test, correlation and regression techniques. Results: Only 22% students scored above 75% and were categorized as good practioners of personal hygiene. The age of students, parents literacy, and household income were significantly associated with personal hygiene. The common morbidities like head lice and dental caries were found gender sensitive in the study area. The negative association between disease score and personal hygiene score implied that the disease burden of children can be minimized with higher personal hygiene practices. Conclusions: Systematic efforts to sensitize school children and parents about importance of personal hygiene, improvement in parental literacy coupled with economic empowerment of rural families can help to enhance the status of personal hygiene of students and thereby drastic reduction in their disease burden.

Abstract:
Background: Hand hygiene is recognized as the leading measure to prevent health care associated infections. WHO has introduced evidence-based guideline on hand hygiene practice among healthcare professionals. But, knowledge and practice of hand hygiene remains poor among students. Therefore, the present study was planned to study knowledge and practice of hand hygiene among Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Science (BNYS) students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 79 first year BNYS students. Knowledge of students was assessed using WHO hand hygiene questionnaire; practices were evaluated by using another self-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to calculate percentages for knowledge and practice of hand hygiene among study subjects. Results: 35 (44%) of the students had moderate level of knowledge and 25 (32%) students had poor knowledge of hand hygiene. 73 (92%) students had correct knowledge that hand hygiene action before touching a patient prevented transmission of germs to the patient. Only 11 (14%) had knowledge that artificial nails should be avoided. Only 19 (24%) students were aware that hand rubbing was required before palpation of abdomen. Only 34 (43%) students adhered to hand hygiene practices regularly. Conclusions: Hand hygiene is an important tool for prevention of hospital acquired infections. The overall knowledge and practice of hand hygiene was not good among study subjects and a few numbers of students had attended formal training about hand hygiene. These findings indicate that the BNYS students require increased emphasis on hand hygiene education and training in their curriculum.

Abstract:
Recent research indicates that investments in infrastructure for safe water and sanitation provision do not significantly reduce the incidence of water-borne diseases in the developing world unless they are accompanied by education in water handling and hygiene practices. School-based hygiene education initiatives are popular, but there is little evidence that they are effective in teaching students about safe water-handling practices. This study compared the outcomes of two approaches to teaching schoolchildren about the links between hygiene, water handling, and water-borne diarrhea. One approach combined messages about safe water handling and hygiene practices with water testing; the other used messages alone. A quasi-experimental design was used with 120 middle-school students. Forty students received messages alone, 40 received messages and tested water quality, and 40 served as a control group. An evaluation 1 week after the interventions measured students’ hygiene knowledge. Results showed significant improvement in knowledge among students who received messages and tested water, compared to their counterparts who received intervention through hygiene messages only. Evaluation after 12 months showed that the hygiene knowledge gained in both groups was retained. Including participatory water testing in hygiene education interventions can improve students’ knowledge about safe water handling and hygiene practices.

Background. Good sleep hygiene plays an important role in human health. Medical students are notorious for insufficient and irregular sleep habits which are linked with students’ learning abilities, poor academic performance, and poor interpersonal relationship which predispose them to mental illnesses. However, it has not been studied among medical students in Ethiopia. Method. This institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 576 undergraduate medical students selected by using a stratified sampling technique. Sleep hygiene (SHI) was assessed by a 13-item sleep hygiene questionnaire. Binary logistic regression was used to identify the potential determinants of poor sleep hygiene among undergraduate medical students. Variables with p values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant, and the strength of the association was presented by adjusted odds ratio with 95% C.I. Result. The prevalence of poor sleep hygiene practice among undergraduate medical students was 48.1% (95% 43.7, 52.1). After adjusting for the possible confounders, being female ( AOR = 1.53 , 95% CI 1.03, 2.26), having depressive symptoms ( AOR = 3.55 , 95% CI 2.26, 5.59), with stress symptoms ( AOR = 2.41 , 95% CI 1.61, 3.60), and having anxiety symptoms ( AOR = 2.2 , 95% CI 1.42, 3.31) were associated with poor sleep hygiene practice at p value < 0.05. Conclusion. Almost half of the medical students had poor sleep hygiene practice. Routine screening of depressive and stress symptoms and education about sleep hygiene are warranted among medical students.

BACKGROUND: While the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic creates fear and anxiety on the students’ academic achievement, the risk of an infectious disease may negatively affect education by reducing the concentration ability of students. Thus, it is essential to evaluate the knowledge, behaviors, anxiety levels, and hygiene status of students. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, behavior change, anxiety, and hygiene status of university students about COVID-19. METHODS: The investigation was conducted with students of three vocational schools of health services located in different provinces of Turkey (n = 1055). Data collected by an online survey consisted of knowledge questions about COVID-19, items about behavior change, the hygiene behavior scale (HBS), and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7) scale. RESULTS: The knowledge scores of women were significantly higher than the scores of men. Of the students, 59.6%showed positive hygiene behaviors, and 31.5%had anxiety. Female students’ total HDC scale score was significantly lower than that of men, and the total HDC scale score of those who received hand hygiene education was significantly lower than that of participants who did not receive training, which shows a positive hygiene behavior. The total GAD-7 scale score of women was significantly higher than that of men. More than half of the students showed positive hygiene behaviors, and about a third had anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the study’s results, psychological support and training should be provided to students.

Abstract:
Purpose Hand hygiene is the single most important intervention to reduce the risk of acquiring infection. All healthcare workers and healthcare students have a responsibility to prevent transmission of infection. The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ attitudes to hand hygiene following university-based education and practice placement. Students attended a lecture, completed an e-learning module, participated in a practical session using a ultra-violet light hand inspection cabinet and engaged in clinical placement. Design/methodology/approach In all, 64 students participated in a multimodal hand hygiene education programme before clinical placement, with each student completing an in-class questionnaire after placement. Data were analysed using descriptive and comparative statistics. Students rated educational methods that had most influence on them. Their preference was for a practical hand hygiene education session. Students were also influenced by the therapist they were on placement with. They were least influenced by the didactic college presentation. Findings This study highlights that students may be influenced by different methods of education at different stages in their course and that placement may be an important influencing factor in the earlier years of occupational therapy education. Research limitations/implications This study highlights the importance of the availability of a multimodal educational approach and clinical placement to promote increased compliance with hand hygiene amongst students. Practical implications University healthcare course curricula should include multimodal approaches to the education of hand hygiene. While hand hygiene e-learning modules are beneficial, they should be used in conjunction with a multimodal educational strategy that incorporates practical elements. The influence of the therapist on a students’ behaviour should be utilised to improve both student and professionals hand hygiene adherence. Originality/value Original piece of work that is not widely discussed in Occupational Therapy literature.

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate behavior and perception of hand hygiene practices among undergraduate students in a School of Dentistry. Methods: The study adopted a qualitative technique called Collective Subject Discourse (CSD). The sample comprised students enrolled in a Public School of Dentistry, in Sao Paulo State, Brazil (n=54). Semi-structured interviews were recorded in a digital voice recorder. Data analysis was carried out by means of a quali-quantitative approach with the help of Qualiquantisoft(r) software. Results: Students showed adequate knowledge regarding guidelines about hand hygiene practices. However, they considered their procedure gloves as an effective way to avoid crossed-infection, and mentioned inadequate infrastructure of sinks and sometimes lack of consumables undermined their adherence to hand hygiene practices. They reported health professionals and professors at the Institution as being reckless with handwashing, especially before donning gloves or after removal. Students reported the school properly guided them in relation to teaching hand hygiene practices, but they stated they were careless with the recommendations. Students were very concerned if they would hypothetically be treated by professionals who did not wash their hands. Conclusion: This study identified some of the hand hygiene compliance failures among dental students. Educational strategies by means of an increase in motivation to perform hand hygiene properly, and by adjusting professor's practices in front of the students would be crucial to improve adherence. Additionally, the improvement on the infrastructure in this institution by means of new washbasins and more available consumables would benefit hand hygiene adherence.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate sleep quality among healthcare science students and to assess its association with sleep hygiene knowledge and practices, circadian typology and lifestyle factors. Material and Methods. The research was conducted as a cross-sectional questionnaire-based internet study on a sample of 268 students. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and The Self-Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire were applied as research instruments to assess sleep quality and chronotypes respectively, while evaluation of the other variables was conducted using he Sleep Hygiene Knowledge Questionnaire, socio-demographic questionnaire and the questionnaire of lifestyle factors. Results. The average of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score for all students was 6.9 ? 3.2. The poor sleep quality (The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index > 5) was reported in 62.7% of students. Sleep efficiency less than 85% was found in 43.0% of students, and 78% of students reported daytime dysfunctionality. Sleep quality was significantly worse among female students; coffee, alcohol and energy drink consumers and long-term cell phone users. Only 11.9% of students were classified as the morning chronotype and they had the best quality of sleep and the best sleep hygiene knowledge and practices, whereas the evening chronotype had the worst quality of sleep. A significant negative correlation was identified between sleep hygiene knowledge (r = - 0.133) and practice (r = 0.501) and sleep quality whereby the lower t he Sleep Hygiene Knowledge Questionnaire and Sleep Hygiene Practice Scale scores follow a higher the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score. Conclusion. Majority of students had a suboptimal level of overall sleep quality, satisfactory knowledge of sleep hygiene, but they did not have the sleep hygiene practices which suggests that knowledge is not a factor of deterring from unhealthy behaviors.
