Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The third volume of Saggi di anglistica e americanistica is the last in the series published under the aegis of the University of Florence PhD course in English and American Studies which, after 25 years, will terminate its activities in 2013. This last collection once again attests to the worth of the PhD's educational programme and aims: it brings together the essays produced by ten young scholars over the last three years of research, in view of preparing their PhD dissertations. They are essays that range from literary phenomena and their historic, linguistic and socio-cultural contexts, to problems posed by texts from Anglo-American to South African, Australian and Caribbean cultures, confirming the variety of the Florence PhD students' research interests and approaches. Azzari, Margherita, and Leonardo Rombai, eds. Amerigo Vespucci e i mercanti viaggiatori fiorentini del Cinquecento. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6655-359-5.

Full text
Abstract:

A-R Editions, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.31022/b233.

Full text
Abstract:
Marc-Antoine Legrand's La chute de Phaéton, comédie en musique (1694) is the only surviving opera parody from France that was written outside of Paris in the seventeenth century. Part spoken theater and part musical drama, Legrand's work sets excerpts of Jean-Baptiste Lully's Phaéton to a narrative about a troupe of musicians in the city of Lyon who try to rescue their failing opera company from financial collapse. Based on actual events, La chute de Phaéton cleverly transforms Lully's moral lessons on the disastrous consequences of hubris into a scathing commentary on the opera industry—and on the genre of opera itself. The musical portion amounts to approximately thirty minutes of performance time and includes dances, choruses, récitatifs, and airs, making it an ideal tool for introducing students to French baroque music as well as for offering an opportunity of creative exploration for those more experienced with the repertoire.

Heyman, Barbara B. Samuel Barber. 2nd ed. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190863739.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Samuel Barber (1910–1981) was one of the most important and honored American composers of the twentieth century. Writing in a great variety of musical forms—symphonies, concertos, operas, vocal music, chamber music—he infused his works with poetic lyricism and gave tonal language and forms new vitality. His rich legacy includes such famous compositions as the Adagio for Strings, the orchestral song Knoxville: Summer of 1915, three concertos, and his two operas, the Pulitzer Prize–winning Vanessa and Antony and Cleopatra, a commissioned work that opened the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York. Generously documented by letters, sketchbooks, original musical manuscripts, and interviews with friends, colleagues, and performers with whom he worked, this book covers Barber’s entire career and all of his compositions. The biographical material on Barber is closely interspersed with a discussion of his music, displaying Barber’s creative processes at work from his early student compositions to his mature masterpieces. The book also provides the social context in which this major composer grew: his education; how he built his career; the evolving musical tastes of American audiences; his relationship with Gian Carlo Menotti and such musical giants as Serge Koussevitzky, Arturo Toscanini, Vladimir Horowitz; and the role of radio in the promotion of his music. A testament to the significance of neo-Romanticism, Samuel Barber stands as a model biography of an important American musical figure.
