Full textBeing motivated is the key to success within academic studies, but it is not always easy tomaintain the motivation to study as there are plenty of interesting things to do besides schoolwhich easily catch the attention of students. One such thing is gaming on different digitalplatforms as computer, console and mobile. Which are the factors that make the games soappealing, and is there a way to use these to influence the motivation to study among students? After finding these factors through literature studies some of them were chosen to build an onlineinteractive web application consisting of five functions. The five functions were built uponvirtual rewards and comparison of work efforts in terms of: Progression bars, medals, achievements and high score lists, which all were formed in different ways depending on theexamined factors. This was done in order to apply these functions on studies within highereducation to see how they affect the students and their motivation to study. Therefore gamification is examined in relation to academic studies in this paper. To analyze the result ofthe impact of the web application the same group of students were also asked to fill out a survey. To sum up the study, we have concluded that all of the examined factors from gamification tendto increase the students motivation to study. Especially when several virtual rewards andcomparison of work efforts were combined together. The level of increased motivation to studywas although dependent on personal characteristics.

Full textSammanfattning

Full textThe purpose of this study was to examine the difference in academic motivation in students attending two different college programs. Three specific research questions were constructed: “Is there a difference between students attending the economics program and the preschool teacher program with regard to internal motivation?”, “Is there a difference between students attending the economics program and the preschool teacher program with regard to extrinsic motivation?” and “Is there a difference between students attending the economics program and the preschool teacher program with regard to amotivation? To test this an independent t-test was conducted. A questionnaire was constructed to collect data from 119 participants, of which 111 were used for analysis. From the 111 participants there were 59 responses from students attending the economics program and 52 from the preschool teacher program. The self-assessment questionnaire Academic Motivation Scale was used to measure academic motivation. The independent variable was educational programs at Karlstad university with two conditions, the economics program and the preschool teacher program. The three motivational perspectives internal motivation, extrinsic motivation and amotivation including the subscales to accomplish, to know, to experience stimulation, external regulation, introjected regulation and identified regulation were the dependent variables. The results showed a significant difference between the two programs with regard to extrinsic motivation and the motivational subscales external regulation, identified regulation, to experience stimulation and to know. This showed that the students attending the economics program is more driven by an external goal they wish to achieve and are more affected by rewards and external demand than the students attending the preschool teacher program. It also showed that the preschool teacher students value their own choice to study and are more curious and have more stimulating conversations with their classmates than the economics students. An unequal gender distribution between the two college programs is to be considered in the conclusion. The students attending the economics program had an equal gender distribution and showed a significant difference between men and women with regards to external regulation and to experience stimulation. This shows that the women experience a more controlled motivation than the men and the men show more commitment in various tasks than the women. The conclusion is that there is a difference in academic motivation between the two college programs but that difference is small. Only the subscale external regulation had 5 more variance where the economics students showed a higher value then the preschool teacher student. This study showed that a behavior is not controlled by internal or extrinsic motivation. Motivation can vary in strength and orientation.

Full textFollowing study is about motivation from a student perspective. Based on the prescribed literature and published research, the concept and field of motivation have been illuminated. The purpose of the study was to examine how students in ninth grade perceived their educational motivation and what kind importance they considered it had for their performance in school. The study is also supposed to base upon the result; clarify the differences if any between schools. In an attempt to get a clear image of this a quantitative method in the form of surveys was made on two schools in the Stockholm region. One of the schools had a really good merit value, and the other had a rather poor merit- value. By choosing a quantitative method a relatively large number of students where able to participate and equally large quantity of statistics have been presented. The result point at motivation in the participating students in both schools can increase and decrease through different factors. These factors, observed in this study, are directly linked to the school and includes among other things the significant of having an influence on the education and inner factors as being able to achieve a certain degree and of external factors as the school environment.

Full textI have chosen to examine about commend with concrete and objective aimed awards influences study motivation at mound causing students from a gender perspective at an elementary school. Moreover, I want to examine about there be other factors that possible contributes positively to that these students become study motivated and causes good. Another aim with the survey is to see about something from the survey result can to be used in order to justify not so study motivated students that on my school be in a big number. The school's management has shown a big interest for this usefulness. The survey was done in two classes in races. Nine where three girls and three boys that have surely validated and a lot surely validated in most matters were chosen out. The method I select builds on qualitative on qualitative recorded interviews where I have interpreted the young people's experiences about what that runs their motivation in the school. The survey shows that the students experience that they were influenced a lot of commend and award. Most examined students mean also that they mainly is run of internal objective about getting themselves a good education in the future. Other interesting factors that the study show are that girls more is run of commend that confirms them for who they are while boys in big extent see commend as an acknowledgment on what the do. These new findings come the school henceforth to take into consideration.

Full textGamification refers to the implementation of game elements in non-game environments. The goal of gamification is often to increase motivation to perform a task. The purpose of this study is to examine how motivation and focus among engineering students are affected by using the gamified mobile phone application Focus Plant. The purpose of Focus Plant is to reduce mobile phone usage during studies or work. Gamification is a relatively new concept and is expanding into different areas such as marketing, learning and well-being. Gamification has previously been criticized for being too general and for simplifying how motivation is created. The effects of gamification from previous research are still not clear. This study uses previous research about gamification and motivation to examine the effects of a gamified mobile application and how well the game elements have been implemented. To investigate this, 12 students tested Focus Plant while studying during a two week period. After the test period, individual interviews were held with each of the participating students to gather data on their experience with the application as well as its effects on their motivation and focus on their studies. The results of the study shows that by using the application, the mobile phone became somewhat less of a distraction. The students did not become motivated to study more, however they felt more motivated to finish a study session they had already started, when using the application. A timer and lock function were two features in the application that made the phone less of a distraction. According to the participants, these features made it feel like they could not do other things on the phone while the timer in Focus Plant was on. A common theme among all participants was that many of the game elements were distracting instead of motivating and encouraging. Other factors were that the participants felt that the reward system was insufficient and that some game elements were contradictory to the purpose of the application. Our conclusion is that gamification can affect both motivation and focus among students, but to achieve the best results it is important that the implementation of game elements pays attention to the balance between the user’s intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Studiemotivation

Full textThere is a school policy debate on a how much it should be of core subjects and program specific subjects in the upper secondary school theoretical and practical programs. The aim of the study was to examine whether there is a difference in study motivation in core subject and program specific subject depending on whether the programs have a theoretical or practical orientation. Participants in the study were students at upper secondary school from the final years from a theoretical program, the natural science program and from a practical application, the health care program. Study motivation was assessed by a questionnaire. The results showed that the study motivation for the core subject was greater for students on the theoretical program than it was for students at the practical program. Study motivation was higher for the program specific subjects for students at the practical program.

Full textMotivation as a process involves everything that drives humans forward and causes them to act in a certain direction. What primarily drive people to act are their needs. Humans feel comfortable when needs are met and discomfort when not satisfied. In order for a student to start, continue and complete university studies, a certain amount of motivation is required. Motivation may be of either internal or external character. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate to what extent the students at Luleå University of Technology considered themselves motivated for their studies. Another purpose was to study the amount of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among these students. Data was collected using a web survey where the participants were asked to estimate their total motivation, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Estimates were then compared between participants belonging in philosophical versus technical faculty and between students in the beginning versus the end of their education. The material was then analyzed using SPSS. The performance pattern indicates that the students felt motivated to their studies. The feeling of motivation was seen as stable. The results showed that students had a week tendency to estimate their intrinsic motivation a bit higher than extrinsic motivation. Results showed that faculty affiliation or beginning / end of education had no significant effect on estimates of total motivation, intrinsic motivation or extrinsic motivation.

During our education we came in contact with the individual program at a school where 82 % of an age group had managed to become appropriated to a national program. This made us curious. The purpose of our study was to find out what had contributed to the students’ study motivation. A hermeneutical study with both qualitative and quantitative methods through interviews and questionnaires, have been used. The research findings show that it is no coincidence that so many students become qualified to apply to a national program after a year in the Individual Program at the school in question. We draw the conclusion that the students, despite a sometimes reduced motivation, have aquired an internal motivation to reach their goals to get appropriated to a national program during a year on the individual program. The counsellor at the individual program have a big importance for the students study motivation.

Full textWe have performed a qualitative case study at a school of substandard merit. Our purpose was to examine to what ninth graders had a sense of confidence about their future success and academic motivation. The questions asked were: Which factors do the ninth graders deem influential for their own sense of confidence in future prospects, as well as what affects their academic motivation? What is the relationship between confidence in future success and academic motivation at the school? What do the students feel, can be done to improve their own beliefs about future prosperity as well as improve academic motivation? We have been inspired by phenomenological research and have used an inductive approach. We collected our data via semi structured qualitative interviews with eight ninth grade students. We processed the data by first transcribing the interviews, then we summarized each interview looking for key themes related to our original queries. Finally we consolidated the common denominators into a compilation. We did our analysis using the concept of KASAM, or ”sense of context”, as well as its' components, those being; manageability, comprehensibility, and relevance. The results revealed that all the informants were academically motivated and they each felt confident in their future outlook. There seemed to be a lot of factors that influenced both their motivation and their outlook, amongst these were family, friends, teachers, and roll models. Using the KASAM, or ”sense of context” concept, and its' components we could see a relationship between their academic motivation and their beliefs about their future. The informants first need to comprehend why they need to study, in order for them to feel a sense of educational motivation (comprehensibility). They need to feel that they have the resources needed to attain the desired results and goals that they have (manageability) and they need a goal with their studies so that they feel it is worth investing in the studies (relevance). The most important revelation that we have gleaned from our study and that we feel is of most value when working with school age youth in the here and now, is to understand how academic performance is directly related with the students perception about their future. Even everyday life needs to be comprehensible, manageable, and have relevance, in order for youth to thrive and function.

Full textStudies have shown that implementation of distance studies during the covid-19 pandemic has led to an overall decrease in students’ motivation and study time. This observation seems worrying under the assumption that more study time correlates to higher academic performance. Hence, tools to help increase students' study time are highly appreciated. Social comparisons between students have been shown to increase study performance. Therefore, this study investigates if social comparisons between 15 first-year students can increase their study time. To investigate this, we developed two versions of a website with a 25-minute timer. One of the versions had a leaderboard integrated where all the participants could see how many timers the other participants had finished. The participants with the most finished timers appeared at the top of the leaderboard, and the ones with the least finished timers at the bottom. The other version of the website did not include this leaderboard feature. During the first week of testing, the participants used this version (excluding the leaderboard) for one week. After this, the participants used the other version (including the leaderboard) for one week. To see if there had been an increase in study time with the integrated leaderboard, the total number of finished timers per person were noted by the end of each week. After the testing of the website, we interviewed the participants. The results from the testing of the website show a fractional decrease in study time when using the website with the leaderboard. Due to this small difference, we evaluate the results as no substantial difference in study time between the two weeks. However, due to external factors mentioned in the interviews that may have affected these results (such as differences in workload between the two weeks), a conclusion cannot be made.

Full textThe study is based on the fact that university studies and reading course literature can be difficult for students. The purpose is to investigate what factors are important in designing a mobile application that is designed to facilitate students when reading course literature. In this study, the facts of previous research have been combined to create a prototype. The prototype was tested by potential users. The test was supplemented with questionnaires, estimates and interviews. Delimitations in this study was that in the prototype only parts of memory techniques and priming is being tested. The exercises used in the test were put together without any involvement from the users to see if priming of words can help students with learning. Previous research addresses the problem of absorbing knowledge from a large amount of course literature. Inspiration has been taken from different types of memory techniques, so-called mnemonics, with the hope that these will facilitate the reading of new literature, thus increasing or maintaining motivation. Other aspects that are addressed include images and memorizing, priming for understanding a text easier, mini-exercises in smartphones tailored for today's pressed schedules as well as motivation. In theory, we have looked at motivation, primarily intrinsic motivation, supported by Keller's ARCS Model based on attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction. The additional theory part takes up learning, feedback and study strategies. This is a qualitative study where facts have been gathered from literature to create a prototype with priming exercises. The prototype and exercises were intended to prepare a student for reading a text. The empirical data was collected from five potential users. The result shows how the potential users perceived the use of the prototype as well as briefly about their general opinions about their own studies. The user's experience of the prototype does not clearly show the benefit of such a type of device. Some users did not fully find the utility of the app, some found it moderately helpful, and one person showed more clearly the prototype also contributed to motivation for further studies. In addition to this, the interviews showed that motivation to study was to increase the possibility of getting a job in the future. It also turned out that course literature was not always used but the students found the necessary information in another way. Most participants indicated that preparation for an examination often occurred the days before the deadline, however, it is unclear how the participants interpreted the meaning of "prepare yourself". A reflection of the study is to improve clarity regarding the mobile exercises and connection to the text that belonged to the exercises. If this was very unclear to users, it may affect the result.

Full textThe aim of the study is to examine how pupils are affected by working under free forms, with respect to student motivation. The study took place in a high school in Stockholm with free study time scheduled, where the pupils are able to choose to work with whatever they find suitable. A qualitative study was carried out with focus groups to explore the opinions of students, teachers and principals regarding the student motivation during these classes. The theoretical framework of this study draws on Ryan & Decis’ Self Determination theory (SDT) and other theories concerning responsibility and control. The results show that a large amount of freedom makes some of the pupils regard these classes as an advantage for their motivation. Some other pupils perceived that freedom of choice affects them negatively as they cannot take responsibility for their schooling. Common for all pupils is that despite their own choice, the intrinsic motivation is not generated. Furthermore, the results indicate that the majority of the pupils are not prepared to act within a normative governance philosophy despite the school's vision regarding this.
