Abstract:
Synopsis Killing ‘em softly: terminating projects within a video game studio is a case study on human resource management (HRM) and project management in a creative setting. This disguised case is based on a real situation that was documented through individual and group interviews at a major video game studio. Several HRM and project management concepts can be discussed through this case including employee retention, planning and staffing and intracompany communication. It seeks to help students develop a multi-level, interdisciplinary and critical analysis of a common HRM situation in project-based creative sectors and invites them to devise action and communication plans to handle the termination of a project. Research methodology This disguised case is based on real events and depicts tensions as they unfolded within a Canadian major video game company. Data for this case were collected through eight individual interviews followed by two group interviews with the employees involved. Early drafts of this case were also presented to respondents in order to ensure the validity of the case. Follow-up interviews, as well as the analysis of company documents were later used to complete the case’s final edits. Relevant courses and levels This case can be used in HRM, project management and creativity management courses/modules at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It is relevant for business students in an HRM major, as well as for general administration students who plan to work in creative sectors. The case is also suitable for students in arts programs who aspire to manage creative teams or projects. It can be used as a take-home individual or group assignment, or as an in-class group activity.

- The Permanent Observatory on the Local Public Administration (Pal) was established in 2008 by Assoimmobiliare, DS&P Studio Legale Associato and Laboratorio Gesti.Tec of the Polytechnic of Milan. It was created with the objective of mapping and analysing the procedures and times for the approval of measures to implement urban planning decisions by Pal which plays a decisive role in urban redevelopment and transformation processes because by intervening in the decision-making phase of plans, it influences the feasibility from many points of view (architectural, social, environmental, time, economic, financial, etc.). The bureaucratic and administrative difficulties represent the first obstacle to overcome for those who intend to invest capital in the property sector. Streamlining those bureaucratic procedures therefore constitutes one of the main objectives which Pal must pursue to attract investors to its area and demonstrate that it is able to able to manage urban planning and building formalities efficiently and effectively.

Abstract:
Sandra Ramos (b. 1969) is one of the few artists to reflect critically on both sides of the Cuban di-lemma, fully embodying the etymological origins of the word in ancient Greek: di-, meaning twice, and lemma, denoting a form of argument involving a choice between equally unfavorable alternatives. Throughout her works she shines a light on the dilemmas faced by Cubans whether in Cuba or the United States, underlining the bad personal and political choices people face in both countries. During the hard 1990s, while still in Havana, the artist focused on the traumatic one-way journey into exile by thousands, as well as the experience of profound abandonment experienced by those who were left behind on the island. Today she lives in Miami and operates a studio there as well as one in Havana. Her initial disorientation in the USA has morphed into an acerbic representation and critique of the current administration and a deep concern with the environmental collapse we face. A buffoonlike Trumpito has joined el Bobo de Abela and Liborio in her gallery of comic characters derived from the rich Cuban graphic arts tradition where she was formed. While Cuba is now represented as a rotten cake with menacing flies hovering over it ready to pounce, a bombastic Trumpito marches across the world stage, trampling everything underfoot, a dollar sign for a face.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to compare music studio teachers’ ( n = 622) and K–12 music teachers’ ( n = 976) perceptions of the extent to which their postsecondary education helped them develop selected professional skills and abilities, perceptions of how important those same selected skills and abilities are for teaching, and job satisfaction. Data are from the 2011, 2012, and 2013 administrations of the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project survey. Respondents indicated the following skills were very important to their work: relationship building (Studio: 81.3%; K–12: 75.7%), leadership skills (Studio: 71.6%; K–12: 89.3%), project management (Studio: 65.1%; K–12: 74.8%), persuasive speaking (Studio: 63.4%; K–12: 74.2%), clear writing (Studio: 51.5%; K–12: 63.4%), creative thinking (Studio: 88.7%; K–12: 91.4%), taking feedback (Studio: 78.8%; K–12: 81.2%), broad knowledge and education (Studio: 80.1%; K–12: 91.0%), and critical thinking (Studio: 64.3%; K–12: 76.4%). Fewer than 50% of respondents felt their institutions had helped them develop project management, persuasive speaking, clear writing, and critical thinking skills. The most substantial differences were financial, business, and entrepreneurial skills, indicating that studio teachers perceive these skills as important to their work. Studio teachers were less satisfied with job security but more satisfied with work-life balance than K–12 teachers.

Abstract:
The retrospective analysis of emergence of out-of-school art education of the region is made in the article, organization and role of extracurricular education in Ukraine, its organizers and researchers in this field. The emergence and development of art school of Transcarpathia in the twentieth century led to the formation of new generations of artists and the creation of art education. Out-of-school educational establishments of artistic and aesthetic direction were created for young children of the first school age, the first of which was a studio of fine arts under the direction of Zoltan Bakonii. Following the example of this studio in Transcarpathia in the second half of the twentieth century. opened children's art schools with the department of fine arts in the cities of Mukachevo, Uzhhorod, Khust, Vynohradiv, v.Chynadiyevo, etc., where teachers were mostly graduates of Transcarpathian art educational establishments. The development of art education in Transcarpathia and the extracurricular education of the region was studied by Nebesnyk I. I., Voloshchuk A .V, Mochan T. M, Rosul T. I. In the system of art education in Transcarpathia, founded by Adalbert Erdeli and Joseph Boksai, such well-known teachers as V. Skakandii, I. Masniuk, N. Ponomarenko, M. Syrohman, L. Prymych, V. Manailo, E. Roman, T. Bartosh, H. Homoki, V. Dorosh, A. StasIuk and others studied and worked there. Important role in the development of regional extracurricular education of artistic and aesthetic orientation belongs to such well-known pedagogues-educators as V. Burch and V. Tsibere. They played a major role in the creation of Mukachevo Children's ArtSchool named after M. Munkachi. This school of arts, after Z. Bakonii's studio, is one of the first art schools in the field where fine arts is taught. Later the art departments were based on children's music schools. The fine arts department at Uzhhorod Children's School of Arts started its activity in 1984. Most of the teachers came to Zoltan Bakonii's schools: V. Vovchok, O. Sidoruk, G. Kramarenko, E. Roman (head of the department of fine art) and others. Over 200 students study at the fine arts department of named school. During the 1990s, Transcarpathian extracurricular institutions were stagnant and even have undergone a numerical reduction. Since the beginning of 2000, as a result of the successful management of local administrations and their successful policies, their activities have been normalized and coordinated with the work of leading educational establishments of the art education of the region, in particular the College of Arts named after A. Erdeli and the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts. The joint actions and events, workshops for the students of art schools of the region, as well as training courses and seminars for teachers are held. Therefore, in the system of continuous art education (school, college, academy), extra-curricular institutions play an important role. At the School of Arts children learn the basics of fine literacy, academic drawing, painting, composition and get acquainted with examples of the world's best art at the Art history lessons. It is at the School of Arts that the artistic and aesthetic tastes and sensations of beauty are formed, the aesthetic education of young people, its professional orientation, and the formation of artistic environment of the region. In the field of art education, this three-stages system is important, because it solves its sectoral tasks and is a very important link and system of continuous art education in Transcarpathia.

- In 2007 the Region of Lombardy adopted the principles set by the Ĺrhus convention on involving civil society in environmental issues and increasing awareness of them, advocating the use of new technologies to that end in a general perspective of system efficiency. Nevertheless the change from the administration of procedures to the administration of results, within which the decision of the Region of Lombardy was set, does not seem to have been fully perceived by local administrations. Apart from a few exceptions, the ‘Strategic Environmental Assessments' set in motion by the latter show a generally ineffective use of the technologies adopted to implement regional provisions on participation.

Abstract:
In this article, Peter Holquist traces both the institutional culture and personnel of one key late-imperial era agency, the Resettlement Administration, based within the Main Administration of Land Management and Agriculture. Holquist examines the technocratic ethos of a close-knit set of officials within the Resettlement Administration's central office, a group who from 1906 to 1917 oversaw plans to develop the empire's peripheries as well as incorporate territories annexed during World War I. Crucial to all their plans was a commitment to the rational and scientific administration of the empire's people and resources under the aegis of the central state. This ethos informed policies during the last decade of the old regime and throughout World War I, and both this ethos and this cohort of officials influenced the state policy of Red and White governments during the civil war and laid the foundation for the Soviet state's colonization programs in the early 1920s.

Abstract:
"Multiple Case Study of (Re)-Design and Restructuring of Studio Arts Schools and Departments in the Research University Environment" investigates the effect of a changing academic value system, as it is manifest through activities of studio arts program redesign and restructuring within the specific context of large, public research universities in the United States of America. A multiple case study (of three distinct American studio arts units) of the academic restructuring phenomenon within this specific locus, examining the interplay of studio arts culture with the larger institutional mandates in the restructuring process, this work approaches restructuring as a series of cultural and survivalist responses to a complex and changing environment.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research study was to determine what service attributes were perceived as important factors for a successful Office of Research Administration (ORA) to provide to principal investigators and department administrators. Initially established more than 50 years ago, The Office of Research Administration (ORA) has evolved into an integral component for the fiscal sustainability of many institutions of higher education. Existing performance metrics based on financial measures do not sufficiently capture the quality of the level of service demands placed on the ORA by the two internal user groups. The conceptual basis of the Balanced Scorecard modified for the non-profit sector served as the theoretical framework. The study involved 668 respondents (433 principal investigators and 235 department administrators) from 72 research universities. Principal investigators and department administrators agreed on 18 service items as important performance metrics for successful Offices of Research Administration. However, the two groups did vary somewhat in the degree of importance of these 18 service items. Four services, responding to email and phone messages within 24-48 hours, easy access to forms, and timely setup of the internal award account were identified as priority factors by greater than 90 percent of the principal investigators. In addition to these four items, another six items-trainings for new employees and training updates for existing employees, equal treatment by the ORA, easy access to policies, and promoting a team effort approach to research-were identified as prior factors by greater than 90% of the department administrators. Demographics did not display a significant relationship in the perceptions of either group. Principal investigators did display a higher satisfaction for level of performance for the items of importance, especially related to the priority factors at their current institutions.

Abstract:
The objective of this essay is to look at two cases where the debate rages regarding whether or not to restitute stolen art back to the states from which it was originally stolen. By looking at the debate in each country the essay focuses on gaining understanding in how one state might decide upon returning the cultural treasures and the other refuses to. In assisting the analysis of the debate, theories from social constructivism, norms and ideas of different national identities are assessed. More closely, this essay tries to examine the different ideas of national identity (Imperial Cosmopolitanism and Egalitarian Cosmopolitanism) and analyze the domestic interpretations of the international norm on restitution of plundered treasures that follow from these identities. In doing so, states of interest, Sweden and Great Britain, are chosen and the theoretical model for analysis developed by Bacchi (2010) will be used in order to present ―the problem‖, the causes to the problem and the solutions provided to solve the problem. Thereby, the essay aims to show how the actions, behavior and arguments of these states, in the question of restitution, are greatly dependant on the differences in the ideas of national identity that each state might possess or have inherited from past.

Schleif, William. "Effects of Long-Term Administration of Caffeine in a Mouse Model for Alzheimer’s Disease." Scholar Commons, 2005. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/854.

Full text
Abstract:
A recent epidemiological study suggested that higher caffeine intake reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Caffeine, a widely consumed stimulatory drug, is a non-selective adenosine receptor antagonist that has been shown to increase plasma adenosine levels in rodents. To determine any long-term protective effects of caffeine in a controlled longitudinal study, caffeine was added to the drinking water of APPsw transgenic (Tg) mice between 4 and 9 1/2 months of age, with behavioral testing done during the last 6 weeks of treatment. The average daily intake of caffeine per mouse (1.5 mg) was the human equivalent of 5 cups of coffee/day. Across multiple cognitive tasks of spatial learning/reference memory, working memory, and recognition/identification, Tg mice given caffeine (Tg+Caff) performed significantly better than Tg control mice and similar to non-transgenic controls. Discriminant Function Analysis involving multiple cognitive measures clearly showed the superior overall cognitive performance of Tg+Caff mice compared to Tg controls. Analysis of Aβ in the hippocampus by ELISA revealed Tg+Caff mice had significantly less soluble Aβ1-40 and insoluble Aβ1-42. In a follow-up study involving neurochemical analysis only, caffeine was added to the drinking water of 17 month old APPsw mice for 18 days. In this study, Tg+Caff mice also showed a significant reduction of insoluble Aβ1-42 in the hippocampus. In contrast to the reduced extracellular brain levels of adenosine in Tg controls, caffeine treatment normalized brain adenosine levels in Tg mice to that of non-transgenic controls. Analysis of amyloidogenic secretase activity revealed the reduction in Αβ is likely because of a reduction in gamma secretase activity as a result of increased SAM silencing of PS1 expression. This study suggest that a modest, long-term caffeine intake of approximately 500 mg per day (5 cups of coffee) may reduce considerably the risk of AD by decreasing amyloidogenesis.

Blunt, Aurelia LaShawn. "Teachers' Perceptions of Integrating Social Studies Text During Reading - Language Arts Instruction." ScholarWorks, 2015. http://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1377.

Full text
Abstract:
In a large urban school system located in a metropolitan city in the southeastern United States, third- and fifth-grade minority students in Title I elementary schools are performing below proficiency in social studies on the statewide standardized assessments. The lack of exposure to the social studies curriculum continues to hinder minority students from successfully comprehending complex informational text, which is important to their success in the newly adopted Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the problem teachers faced with an insufficient amount of time for teaching social studies content and the recent requirement to increase student exposure to informational text. The research used Lev Vygotsky's theory of social constructivism to provide a framework for the methods used in this paper. To address these problems, this study explored two third-grade and two fifth-grade language arts teachers' perceptions of integrating social studies text during their reading-language arts block. Further, the study observed teachers as they integrated social studies text to teach reading. Data for this case study were compiled from interviews, observations, and focus group discussions. The data were reviewed and coded to identify major themes and were then analyzed to generalize data findings. Teachers reported integrating social studies text afforded them the opportunity to maximize instructional time, teach the CCSS, and expose students to more informational text. Implications for positive social change include enabling teachers to identify the benefits of integrating social studies text during reading-language arts instruction and enabling minority students to increase their scores on the statewide social studies assessment.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the dramatic reinvention of U.S. human rights policy during Reagan's first year in office. The Carter administration pursued human rights as a corrective to U.S. interventionist legacies, emphasizing pluralism and eschewing regime change. The Reagan administration, in contrast, aggressively promoted human rights within a reinvigorated but narrow Cold War framework. This construction, championing a limited range of civil and political rights, downplayed the human rights violations of pro-American governments, focusing instead on what it considered the much greater moral flaws and violations of communist regimes. The Cold War framing of human rights under Reagan empowered a pairing of military power and moral values, leading the United States to not only not limit arms sales to governments but also recast military aid as a critical aspect of both hemispheric defense against communism and the advancement of human rights. The chapter studies this policy shift in the Reagan administration's first year in regard to Chile and Argentina.

Abstract:
Since the very nature of an Evolutionary Studies program is interdisciplinary, it stands to reason that building such a program at any institution would entail the involvement of several disciplines across the curriculum. The fewer faculty members, course offerings, and resources at small liberal arts colleges can pose as obstacles in the development of such a program. However, by reaching out to the few faculty members teaching evolutionary studies, the first step of its development began. From there, both the involvement of other disciplines and a heightened student, faculty, and administrative awareness was needed. Instrumental components in building this program have included speaker events, student participation at evolutionary conferences and workshops, student involvement in research, and the development of new courses and a minor degree. This chapter discusses the successes and barriers in developing an interdisciplinary Evolutionary Studies program at a small liberal arts college.

Abstract:
Beyond the spread of fake news, the term “fake news” has been used by people on social media and by people in the Trump administration to discredit reporting and show disagreement with the content of a story. This study offers a series of defining traits of fake news and a corresponding experiment testing its impact. Overall, this study shows that fake news, or at least labeling fake news can impact the gratifications people derive from news. Further, this study provides evidence that the impact of fake news might, in some cases, rely on whether or not the fake news complies with preexisting beliefs.

Abstract:
Audiovisual production involves a list of specific processes for its creation. These processes are tightly linked to literature, music, and other minor arts. They are also interrelated to technology. Examples of this are image capture devices, sound editing consoles, and special effects software. Consumption, distribution, and even the filmmaking process have been profoundly transformed by technology, but how work teams are formed has not. This study is focused on finding out how in an interconnected society, the intelligence of the mass and the proposals of strangers, can find their way to a collaborative production with people interacting through the internet. A first approach is to know which platforms proliferate on the Western hemisphere, spanning across Europe and America, through the participation in audiovisual production forums, interviews with industry professionals, visits to film festivals markets and performing an online census.

The National Institute of Science, Letters and Arts founded by Napoleon in 1810, ‘regenerated’ in 1838 by the Emperor of Austria Ferdinand I, who renamed it Imperial Regio Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, was created to represent the top of a complex system of studies and knowledge management. Promoter of scientific and technological innovations, it boasts Italian and foreign corresponding members, guaranteeing a national and international dimension that was then sanctioned also by the new Italian Kingdom: the Reale Istituto Veneto, in fact, was placed, by rank and official recognition, among the national Academies of the pre-unitary States called to form the various higher councils of Public Education. The Institute also provides the State and local administrations with advice on specific cultural or technical issues, relating to higher education programmes or land management, on topics ranging from meteorology to public health, to hydrological, but also on linguistic issues, and organizes periodic exhibitions of artefacts and machinery to encourage innovation in agricultural and industrial production.

Rafeeque, Ameena, and Mohammed Fasihul Alam. "The effect of Renin Angiotensin System Blockers versus Calcium Channel Blockers on Progression towards Hypertensive Chronic Kidney Disease: A comprehensive systematic review based on Randomized Controlled Trials." In Qatar University Annual Research Forum & Exhibition. Qatar University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29117/quarfe.2020.0162.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Decline in estimated Glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is associated with further progression of chronic kidney disease. Evidence suggests that Renin Angiotensin System blockers (RAS), which can be angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs) or Angiotensin converting enzymes Inhibitors (ACEIs), have reno- protective effect, but results are variable. Similarly, effects of Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are shown to have a role in protecting renal function but differ across studies. Hence, the relative effect of ARBs or ACEIs as well as CCBs, and their administration as monotherapy, remain uncertain. Purpose: To summarize and determine the pooled effect of RAS versus CCBs on progression towards hypertensive CKD amongst diabetic as well as non-diabetic patients with CKD of any stage from I-IV. Data sources: All language studies in PubMed, the Cochrane Library Central, Clinical Registry of unpublishedTrials, WHO, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, reference lists, and expert contacts up to September 2019. Study selection: This study included all the full text articles that studied diabetic and non-diabetic patients with eGFR ≥ 15 ml/min per 1.73m3 or Urinary albumin excretion levels (UAE) ≤ 300mg/d during RAS based treatment an intervention in direct comparison with CCBs treatment based approach as comparator at baseline and at the end of follow-up. However, pooling of all the included studies using meta-analysis was not feasible due to substantial study heterogeneity and the small number of included studies that are meta-analyzable. So, studies were selected for systematic review, and out of which, all the meta-analyzable studies were quantitatively analyzed on the basis of main outcomes such as (i) Relative risk for CKD progression and (ii) Mean differences in SBP and DBP for both the arms. Doi plot and funnel plot were used for detection of publication bias. Results: Review with seven included trials, and metaanalysis using IVhet model was done on three studies for primary CKD outcome and four studies for secondary BP outcomes. RAS blockers and CCBs did not show any statistically significant differences in terms of its effects on further progression CKD with RR of 0.90 [95% CI 0.69, 1.16]. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference in BP from baseline to final end points between CCBs and RAS inhibitors with WMD of -2.09 mmHg [95% CI -5.96, 1.79] for mean SBP change and -0.71 mmHg [95% CI -2.16, 0.73] for mean DBP change. Conclusion: Evidence asserts no difference between RAS and CCB concerning the risk of progression for CKD and in terms of mean BP differences. However, the study have its own set of limitations due to which more well designed and well conducted RCTs with robust findings are required to confirm the inferences based on this review.

Abstract:
Abstract Multidisciplinary design tools are the backbone of conceptual design studies to evaluate and assess future propulsion systems. In the last decade, the IT capabilities dramatically increased. At the same time, “zooming” capabilities and more complex evaluation methods found their way into predesign tools. As a consequence, the bottleneck when performing a design study is neither the computational power nor sufficient computer memory anymore, but rather the abilities of the users to apply the dedicated tools adequately. Therefore, it is crucial to limit the administrative tasks dealing with input and output as much as possible. Those administrative tasks can comprise the preparation of input data and — even more importantly — the check of the model setup and the inspection of the results regarding physical soundness. The paper describes by means of examples how to cope with the challenges described above. The following topics will be addressed: standardization in the field of model configuration (engine model library), automated multidimensional check of multidisciplinary propulsion system models, use of high fidelity methods for pre-design, state-of-the-art error detection, semi-automated parametric studies including the automated set-up of a parametric study, automated convergence improvement, automated result handling, and error detection provided by the codes themselves or by other means of external user guidance.

Abstract:
Longitudinal dynamics influence several measures of train performance, including schedules and energy efficiency, stopping distances, run-in/run-out forces, etc. Therefore, an effective set of tools for studying longitudinal dynamics is essential to improving the safety and performance of train operations. Train Energy and Dynamics Simulator (TEDS) is a state-of-the-art software program designed and developed by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), for studying and simulating train safety and performance, and can be used for modeling train performance under a wide variety of equipment, track, and operating configurations [1]. Several case studies and real-world applications of TEDS, including the investigation of multiple train make-up and train handling related derailments, a study of train stopping distances, evaluations of the safety benefits of Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) brakes, Distributed Power operations, and a study of alternate train handling methodologies are described in this paper. These studies demonstrate the effectiveness of using the appropriate simulation tools to quantify and enhance a better understanding of train dynamics, and the resultant safety benefits.

Abstract:
<p>For improved safety and ease of travel for pedestrians and cyclists across the busy 4-lane main road Breidholtsbraut in the suburb of Breidholt in Reykjavik, Iceland, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration and Reykjavik City Council engaged EFLA Consulting Engineers and Studio Granda Architects for the design of a footbridge over the road. The bridge is an 86-m long, post-tensioned concrete girder in four spans and follows a curved alignment that plays on the landscaped surroundings. The attractive shape of the underside of the concrete girder is formed by a series of arcs; the cross-section having been used before by the design team to good effect. Aiming for minimized inspection and maintenance costs, the end abutments of the bridge are supported through a concealed concrete hinge, eliminating the need for bearings and construction joints. The stainless-steel wire mesh handrail was embedded into the concrete deck post casting, using a carefully planned core drilling procedure. The bridge does not have a support in the road central reserve, and this has allowed the bridge construction to proceed with only a few, short closures of the busy underlying road. The result is a well-received addition to the collection of Reykjavik footbridges.</p>

Abstract:
Abstract This research focuses on improving the outcome of idea generation sessions of interdisciplinary student teams working in the early design stages of a product or solution by measuring the effect of incorporating Design Heuristics Cards at different points of ideation sessions that adhere to the brainstorming guidelines. Using the design thinking methodology, an open-ended challenge was given to the participating teams for a Brainstorming exercise divided into a fifteen-minute individual segment followed by a thirty-minute team ideation segment. Three experimental treatments were designed where Design Heuristics Cards were introduced at different points of the ideation exercise: the start of the individual ideation segment, the start of the team ideation segment, or the second half of the team ideation segment. A fourth control treatment did not introduce the cards at any point but used the Brainstorming guidelines throughout. The metrics observed were Fluency, Novelty, Feasibility, and Market Fit of the ideas generated by the students. Eighty-four students participated in the experiment, with 58.3% being from majors in the College of Engineering, 28.6% from majors in the College of Business Administration, 7.1% from majors in the College of Arts and Sciences, and 6.0% from majors in the College of Agriculture. No significant difference was found among the experimental treatments; however the results are not considered final due to the explorative nature of the study. Recommendations are made on future work and possible improvements to the experiment.

Abstract:
The Train Energy and Dynamics Simulator (TEDS) is state-of-the-art simulation software, developed by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), to study train operation safety and performance as affected by a wide variety of rolling stock, track, train handling and operating configurations. As part of developing TEDS, existing and published data on braking, draft systems and train performance were used for initial validation of TEDS. This paper describes two revenue service tests conducted to further validate TEDS. The first test was on a loaded unit train, while the second test was on a mixed train with empty and loaded cars and included distributed power in which the remote brake valve was cut in. Collected test data included throttle position, train speed, locomotive power, brake system pressures and coupler forces. Several events from these tests, representing typical train operating scenarios, were selected for comparison with TEDS predicted results. The TEDS predictions matched the measured test data for all of the scenarios simulated, further validating the performance of the software and offering additional assurance on the use of TEDS for simulating performance and safety critical train dynamic behavior.
