Abstract:
One hundred nurses were randomly selected from General Hospital Ogoja to assess the level of knowledge of nurses about AIDS with regard to causes, signs and symptoms, mode of transmission, attitudes of nurses toward AIDS patients and safety practices as they affect the practice of caring for AIDS patients. A questionnaire made up of two parts was used. Part A sought demographic information while Part B sought information on knowledge and attitudes of nurses toward AIDS patients. Six hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Data were analyzed by the use of t-test and chi-square statistics. The results revealed a “passing” level of knowledge for nurses with regard to AIDS matters. On the other hand, the result revealed negative attitudes among nurses toward the care of AIDS. Recommendations were made for nurses to be involved in seminars and workshops regarding the AIDS issue both within and outside the country.

Abstract:
ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to compare depressive symptoms among people with HIV/AIDS and the general population sample. We also assessed the factors associated with depressive symptoms.DesignA comparative cross-sectional study was conducted.SettingsAntiretroviral therapy clinics in three primary healthcare facilities and semi-urban area in Northwest Ethiopia.ParticipantsA total of 1115 participants (558 people with HIV/AIDS and 557 comparison group) aged 18 years and above were recruited. A total of 1026 participants (530 people with HIV/AIDS and 496 comparison group) completed the interview. We excluded people with known HIV-positive status from the comparison group.Outcome measurePatient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to assess depressive symptoms. The proportion of depressive symptoms was compared between samples of the general population and people with HIV/AIDS using χ2 statistics. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to examine the associated factors.ResultsThe overall prevalence of depressive symptoms was 13.3% (11.2%–15.4%). The prevalence was significantly higher in people with HIV/AIDS compared with the community sample (16.6% vs 12.3%), p=0.001. The difference was also significant in the multivariable logistic regression (OR 1.7). For the overall sample, depressive symptoms were significantly associated with older age, being single, divorced/widowed marital status, and poor social support.ConclusionsDepressive symptoms were higher in people with HIV/AIDS compared with the general population. It is necessary to include mental healthcare and screening for depression in routine HIV/AIDS care.

Abstract:
Acurate information about acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]and human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]is important for their prevention. This study is intended to assess knowledge on AIDS in students of secondary schools in Buraidah City and to measure the effect of a health education program on their knowledge about AIDS in general, modes of HIV transmission and the degree of their misperception about the transmission of the disease through casual contact. A well-designed health education program using personal communication and visual media techniques was conducted for 483 secondary school students in Buraidah secondary schools during the year 1997. Pre- and post-tests were done to examine their knowledge about AIDS. The results of this study pointed out that a health education program on AIDS for students of secondary schools greatly and significantly improved their scores on general knowledge on AIDS views on its transmission and misperception of AIDS [p < 0.01]. Continuous in-ice programs for secondary students are recommended

Abstract:
HIV/AIDS poses a significant and one of the most genuine general well-being challenges. For HIV anticipation in the Indian scenario, the main plausible and financially savvy approach that can be adapted is proper training about HIV/AIDS and its various aspects. The present study was embraced to survey the degree of information and awareness about HIV/AIDS among clients attending ICTC facility in our hospital.A total of 200 clients, of age >18yrs, attending the ICTC for HIV testing were studied over a period of 3 months. A questionnaire was prepared in regards to the methods of transmission, preventive techniques, mentality towards patient living with HIV/ AIDS and the source of HIV/ AIDS. The response of clients to the questionnaire was recorded.Among 200 participants, 97% were aware that unprotected sex is a mode of HIV transmission and 64% were aware that infected blood transfusion, use of unsterile needles and syringes contribute to other modes of HIV transmission. It was also noted that uneducated clients had a false perception that HIV can be transmitted by drinking water from same glass and by mosquito bite and this was statistically significant compared to educated individuals. The main source of acquiring positive information among the clients regarding HIV was observed to be television (32.5%). Stigma among the general public was mostly due to fear of contracting the illness. There is a requirement for more noteworthy endeavours toward making data with respect to HIV/AIDS accessible to all. The level of awareness regarding HIV/AIDS needs to be elevated among the public.

Abstract:
AbstractObjective: To assess the preparedness of psychiatric nurses to care for patients with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Method: Voluntary anonymous questionnaires were sent to psychiatric and general nurses in a district general teaching hospital. The behaviour, knowledge and attitudes towards AIDS of both groups were then compared with those of three experts specialising in the care of AIDS patients. Results: No inter group differences were found but a majority of nurses differed from the experts on two statements. Contrary to expert opinion nurses believed AIDS could be spread by needle stick injury and if given a choice they stated they would not volunteer to work on an AIDS ward. On controversial issues such as testing and where best to treat psychiatrically disturbed AIDS patients there was wide variation. Conclusion: While this study shows an improvement in health professionals knowledge, behaviour and attitudes towards AIDS, there remain underlying anxieties that need to be addressed with continuing education and training.

Abstract:
The clinical behavior of Kaposi's sarcoma involving the feet is compared for patients with and without AIDS. Although AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma is less likely to be confined to the legs than is non-AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma, the legs are the most common site of disease in both forms. Kaposi's sarcoma occurring in the AIDS setting is as radiosensitive as that which occurs in the patient without AIDS. Palliative radiotherapy can offer substantial relief for affected patients.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to design, create, and implement a pilot for an adapted physical education (APE), DVD-Video teaching aid. This creative project has resulted in a DVD-Video that can be used as an instructional tool and resource for physical educators. It follows the teaching methods and skills from the wheelchair basketball chapter in Davis (2002), featuring strategies and ideas that can aid in the successful teaching of physical education (basketball) to individuals of all abilities. The use of interactive DVD-Video in a learning environment is seen as an innovative and exciting delivery method for instructional purposes. It is proposed that the majority of learners would enjoy using, and acquire a very significant learning experience from using, interactive DVD-Video instruction. Therefore, it is anticipated that physical educators would get a meaningful APE training experience from an interactive instructional DVD-Video such as the one piloted for this creative project.

Abstract:
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) remains an epidemic illness with no known cure. Survival time after infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), has been lengthened considerably. Rates of new infection among the at-risk male homosexual populations have decreased. Prevention is possible through effective, targeted interventions. This study is an exploration of the role or health locus of control, an individual difference construct from the area of social learning theory, in the maintenance of health-oriented behaviours, co-risk indicative behaviours, and high-risk behaviours in a population of adult male homosexuals attending a general medical clinic. The findings result in distinctly different past histories and present patterns of homosexual behaviours among the two serostatus subpopulations. Low internal expectancy of control over health repeatedly relates in distinctive patterns with the areas of level of happiness, condom usage, and hish-risk sexual behaviours. High internal expectancy of control relates significantly to knowledge-related variables. The physician plays a pivotal role as the source of useful information in this at-risk population. The study population as a whole reports accurate knowledge about HIV and AIDS. The men have reduced high-risk behaviours, increased safer sexual behaviours, and implemented the changes advocated. Serostatus differentiates for many high-risk behavioural patterns. There remains a small core of men among the study participants who continue to participate in high-risk sexual behaviours.

Agbonkhese, Racheal. "Agenda setting for maternal mortality in Nigeria : a comparative study of the media agenda for maternal mortality and HIV/AIDS." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/65790/.

Full text
Abstract:
In countries like Nigeria and similar contexts in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, maternal deaths remain prevalent and the current political will and corresponding interventions remain insufficient to significantly address the problem. One way of generating the required political priority is through the mass media, which has been credited with the capacity to influence social and political conversations and set the policy agenda by raising the salience of an issue on its own agenda. This study investigates the processes and factors which influence the media agenda for maternal mortality and comparatively, HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. It utilizes content and frame analysis of newspaper coverage to establish the media agenda for both issues. It also utilises in-depth, semi-structured interviews: 1) with NGOs and other advocates to determine the factors which influence the state of maternal health and source strategies for media engagement; and 2) with senior reporters and health editors, to investigate the factors which influence the media agenda for health issues especially maternal mortality and HIV/AIDS. The results show that the state of maternal health in Nigeria has been influenced by epidemiological factors, cultural and religious factors, gender and socio economic class and strategic factors such as donor politics and priorities. Content analysis of newspaper coverage indicate that news coverage of maternal mortality is significantly low, when benchmarked against HIV/AIDS and that a wider range of framing approaches (including a political and multi-disciplinary approach) are employed in coverage of the latter, compared to the former. The study results also suggest that most maternal health advocates do not take a strategic approach to media engagement and that there is poor collaboration and lack of trust between NGOs and the media. Interviews with media personnel show that that the lack of trust and collaboration between the media and NGOs has resulted in a lack of stakeholding, and media engagement is largely at the level of events reporting. In addition to the above, the results show that the media agenda is predominantly driven by funding, political issue champions, celebrities, expert sources, epidemiology, global health days, events, and human interest stories.

Akbar, Halima Wakabi. "A study of the educational difficulties experienced by AIDS orphans in 5 Ugandan Secondary schools." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2002. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1439/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the educational implications of becoming an AIDS orphan in Uganda. Bereavement is a sensitive topic which many find difficult to discuss with adolescents, even harder if it is HIV/AIDS - related. However the number of AIDS orphans in Uganda is high and a considerable number of them are in school. The main purpose of this study was to investigate what problems such students face and what resources are available to them in schools to help them cope with the loss of their parent/s. Questionnaires and interviews were designed to investigate the perceptions of those in direct or indirect contact with these orphans and with the orphans themselves. They were administered to 5 headteachers, 56 teachers and 400 students from 5 secondary schools. Responses to the questionnaires were analysed, using descriptive statistical techniques, and associations were tested. Interviews were carried out with 5 headteachers, 20 teachers, 25 orphans, a school counsellor, two teacher training lecturers, staff of 4 nongovernmental organisations and an educational officer. Categories and themes were developed using the data, the literature and the research questions. These were then compared across the different schools and respondents. The study found that the identification of AIDS orphans was usually complicated by the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS. Though a substantial number of the orphans were facing multi-variant problems, there were no or very limited resources open to the students to help them cope with the loss of their parent/s. Such students are at risk of dropping out or failing in school and hence access to one of the most important chances in life is denied. These children are also at risk of being socially excluded. Conclusions based on the results of the study were drawn and recommendations made.

Abstract:
This essay focuses on what impact developmental dyslexia has on assessment and grading in the second language teaching of English in the Swedish educational system. The data presented in this essay are based on six semi-structured interviews with English language teachers of lower and upper secondary schools from the south-eastern parts of Sweden. The interviews were conducted in Swedish, and the collected data have been translated into English. The inquiries of the interviews focused on the teachers' awareness of dyslexia and its impact on learning and teaching, as well as how they worked with and their considerations made when assessing and grading dyslexic pupils. The interviews specifically enquired what particular challenges arose in the assessment and grading process, what provided aid, and what could be done to provide further relief during this process. The results show that the assessment and grading of dyslexic pupils is similar to the general practice. The teachers do, however, accommodate the dyslexic pupils' needs in the teaching and carefully consider their difficulties when assessing and grading. The teachers use, for example, spelling programs and such technical aids to help them, to some extent, disregard dyslexic difficulties while assessing. However, results show how the teachers are not able to transfer their awareness of dyslexia and its implications into the assessment and grading situation, suggesting that the teachers' own ability to assess dyslexic pupils is somewhat inadequate.

MacLeod, Mary Anne. "Understanding the rise of food aid and its implications for the welfare state : a study of Scotland and Finland." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/30930/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past decade, the UK has witnessed a considerable expansion in the provision and use of charitable food aid, particularly food banks. The phenomenon has become a prominent political issue, and a rapidly expanding field of academic study. However, there is limited data available as to the prevalence of food aid use or the factors associated with it. The growth in food aid has also prompted research and policy interest in the wider issue of food poverty: the extent to which people struggle to afford food; its drivers and impacts; and the role which charitable food aid has come to play in food poverty experiences. There is a recognised need for better understanding of both food poverty and food aid use as separate but connected phenomena. The recent rise of charitable food aid in the UK has been mirrored across other European welfare states, provoking significant questions about the changing roles of, and relationships between, statutory and voluntary sectors in providing a social safety net. There is a need for greater critical reflection on how food aid is challenging and changing welfare states, particularly in countries where it has only recently become widespread. The overall aim of this thesis is to gain new empirical and theoretical insights into the rise of food aid and its role in relation to the changing nature of the welfare state. In order to address this aim, a mixed methods study of food poverty and the rise of food aid within the welfare state was undertaken. Scotland was selected as the major case study for the research, with a particular focus on the city of Glasgow, while Finland provided the minor, comparative case. The quantitative part of the study involved cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of an existing household survey of 15 deprived neighbourhoods in Glasgow (the GoWell study). The objective was to examine the scale of both food poverty and food bank use. Binary logistic regression modelling was used to examine the relationship of these outcomes with socio-demographic, health, and financial variables. The qualitative fieldwork involved a total of 51 semi-structured interviews. These included interviews with a sample of the GoWell study participants (n=12); service providers in Glasgow (n=12); and policy actors across Scotland (n=9). Fieldwork in Finland involved interviews with policy actors and individuals working in statutory and voluntary services (n=18). This study provides quantitative analysis of a self-reported measure of food bank use, including empirical evidence of the scale and drivers of food poverty and food bank use in deprived neighbourhoods. While four per cent of respondents were found to have reported food bank use in 2015, 17 per cent reported difficulties affording food. The findings highlight the impact of financial factors, specifically of recent UK Government welfare reforms, on both food poverty and food bank use. The study found that survey respondents with mental and physical health problems were more likely to experience both food poverty and food bank use than those who reported good health. Worsening health was also found to increase the likelihood of entering food poverty over time. The qualitative findings provide evidence of how food banks are shaping experiences, perceptions, and delivery of the welfare state at a local level, and also consider how policy makers perceive the state-food aid relationship. Drawing on welfare state regime theory, analysis of interviews with policy actors in both Scotland and Finland inform an examination of the various roles and relationships of food aid and the welfare state across different regime types. Theoretical characterisations of the relationship between food aid and the welfare state, arising from analysis of interview data in both countries, are presented. These include understandings of food aid in relation to a welfare state which might be considered: contingent; shrunken; impersonal; or regressive. Comparing Scotland and Finland offers important insight into how and why food aid may play different roles in different welfare state contexts.

Burke, Stephanie. "Student perceptions of the aims of education in an independent school and the differing value priorities expressed : a Q-methodological study." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2018. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/18012/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research gathered student perceptions of the aims of their senior school education in an independent school. The data was collected using Q-methodology. Participants completed the same Q-sort twice. The Q-sorts were factor analysed resulting in three factors for Q-sort 1 expressing students' own perceptions; these were titled: Future personal success, Enjoyment and care, and Empowerment. Four factors were retained from Q-sort 2, where students completed the same Q-sort from a hypothetical teacher's point of view; these were titled: Social cohesion and enjoyment, Academic importance, Fulfilling potential, and Personal development and wider societal benefits. Literature around the aims of education, the statements for the Q-set and the resulting factors were analysed using Schwartz's model of basic human values and pan-cultural baseline of value priorities as an analytical lens. This showed that although the aims of education align with Schwartz's findings of societal values, the participants in this study expressed differing value priorities to those in Schwartz's pan-cultural baseline. Through this lens, it was found that student perceptions of the aims of their education in this independent school focus mainly on the value of self-determination, in line with Schwartz's findings in societies. Differing from Schwartz's findings in societies, however, is the high prevalence of self-enhancement and hedonism values in the students' perceptions of the aims of their education. Also differing majorly from Schwartz's findings is the low prevalence of benevolence and universalism in the students' perceptions of the aims of their education. The study concludes that further research into the values of independently educated students would provide further valuable insights, and that schools should consider carefully the values that may be enhanced or demoted through certain educational activities.

Thesis, Jönköping University, Högskolan för lärande och kommunikation, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-52297.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to explore the potential benefits and disadvantages of utilizing video game narratives in Swedish EFL teaching. The subject is approached through a qualitative literature review of previous research on the use of video games in the process of L2 acquisition. The results are then discussed from a sociocultural perspective, in relation to the frameworks introduced in the background and to the Swedish steering documents. The results indicate that video games are likely to be part of many students’ out-of-school experiences of the English language and that playing video games can be seen as an example of extramural language learning. The results also highlight how engaging in multiplayer video game narratives can aid L2 acquisition by for example increasing motivation, expanding learner vocabulary and by providing learners with strategies for discourse management such as politeness, humor and small talk. The collaborative and interactive nature of the video game narrative and of video game communities is also shown to align well with the Swedish steering documents that promote social interaction and the development of communicative competence. However, direct classroom implementation of video games is problematized by the fact that not all students have previous experience or tools for interacting with the video game format of storytelling and that gender discrepancies in video game consumption could lead to boys benefiting more than girls from language learning through video game narratives.

Abstract:
AbstractRisk, especially maritime risk, is based on the existence of danger, namely, natural or anthropogenic phenomena whose form, incidence, and intensity must be described and quantified. Therefore, the chronological succession of events, their interpretation, management, and conflict resolution vary in accordance with a series of factors: local traditions, maritime culture, management instruments, institutions that manage the phenomenon, and the customs or norms deployed in order to address maritime conflict. These factors underpin local peculiarities which have largely been ignored in the study of European economic and social development. In line with this historiographic and theoretical framework, this essay analyzes the evolution of the ‘mutualisation’ of maritime risk in some of the territories of the Crown of Castile and how it differs from other European regions, as it evolved from being merely a mutual aid mechanism to becoming a specific type of business. AbstractAnti-unification aims at computing generalizations for given terms, retaining their common structure and abstracting differences by variables. We study quantitative anti-unification where the notion of the common structure is relaxed into “proximal” up to the given degree with respect to the given fuzzy proximity relation. Proximal symbols may have different names and arities. We develop a generic set of rules for computing minimal complete sets of approximate generalizations and study their properties. Depending on the characterizations of proximities between symbols and the desired forms of solutions, these rules give rise to different versions of concrete algorithms.

AbstractThis essay aims to explore an architecture computational design intended to accept and absorb moisture through geometrical and material conditions, and using design strategies, help deliver this moisture upwards through capillary action to areas of cryptogamic growth including mosses and smaller ferns on the surface of architecture. The purpose of this research project is to explore the morphology of general capillary systems based on research into the principle of xylematic structures in trees, thereby creating a range of capillary designs using three types of material: plaster, 3D print plastic, and concrete. In addition, computational studies are used to examine various types of computational designs of organic structures, such as columns, driven by physical and environmental conditions such as sunshine, shade, tides and other biological processes to explore three-dimensional particle-based branching systems that define both structural and water delivery paths.

Two new decision aids have been developed to improve the moral awareness and moral judgment of students and practitioners of business. The purpose of these aids is to flag situations where there is high risk of making flawed ethical decisions due to biases and/or insufficient information. One of the decision aids is a general purpose template which can be used for case study analysis and can be customized by students for particular ethical decisions. Similarly, outside the classroom, the template can be customized to address specific ethical dilemmas or organizational values. The second decision aid was designed to help accounting students as well as practicing auditors evaluate whether self-serving bias may be distorting judgment.

Abstract:
In this chapter, a deep study of dysgraphia and its various available technical aids is discussed. A person suffering from dysgraphia struggles to carry out day-to-day activities like schoolwork, paperwork, and other writing activities. A suitable aid is required to overcome the hurdles due to the suffering. This literature establishes the various effects of dysgraphia in adults and children. An analysis of various effective tools is carried out in the study. Some tools are directly designed to tackle the inconveniences that come along with this disability; others provide a more general aid for writing. The literature also identifies the patterns and quirks commonly found in the handwriting. Algorithms for handwriting recognition is discussed to lay the foundation of aids present for dysgraphia. The objective of the chapter is to provide foundation work to create aids for dysgraphia by categorizing the various related key points.

The importance of global public goods (GPGs) is increasing every day. As a result, the concept become an important part of international policymaking. There is a huge literature on the definition and classification of GPGs, as well as the financing problems of them. GPGs are generally financed through the development aids given by international organizations and some developed countries. Literature is generally concentrated on the determination of the amount of aids devoted to different categories of GPGs, such as environment, health, peace-keeping, and knowledge. Differently from the literature, a new and more general classification is also used in this chapter. The main sectors included in the analysis are social infrastructure and services, economic infrastructure and services, production sectors, multi-sector/gross cutting, and humanitarian aid. For the first time in the literature, principal components and cluster analysis methodologies were used to determine the performance of the countries providing official development aids in this study.

Abstract:
Introduction: The Counseling and Testing Centers (CTC) provide public services aimed at the general population, offering access to serological tests for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and various forms of prevention, from the distribution of male condoms to confidential, individual, and anonymous counseling. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the knowledge of university students about CTC in the Southwest of the state of Goiás, Brazil. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study with a descriptive quantitative approach based on information collected through an online form. Results: The sample consisted of 120 students, of which 64 (53.3%) are white, 84 (70%) are women, 107 (89.2%) are single, and 88 (73.3%) are from health sciences courses. Sixty-six (55%) participants reported not knowing the CTC and only 7 (5.8%) attended a service at any time in their lives. About the services offered, 70 (58.3%) knew about the free offer of STI tests and 66 (55%) were unaware that the CTC offers individualized prevention strategies. Regarding the medical request, 76 (63.3%) students were unaware that there is no need and 79 (65.8%) were unaware that transvestites and transsexuals can use the social name. After answering the form, 107 (89.1%) participants agreed to seek assistance at the CTC eventually, if needed. Conclusion: The majority of students are white, women, single, from the health area, and unaware of the service and activities performed by the CTC. Thus, the study revealed a situation of clear ignorance of university students about CTC in the Southwest of Goiás, demonstrating the need to publicize the service aiming to increase the demand for care in the region.

Abstract:
Introduction: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a serious health care problem, with an estimated annual incidence of 357 million cases by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is important to recognize that young adults are responsible for more than half of all STI cases. Objective: The aim of this review was to determine the general knowledge of university students about STI. Methods: A literature review was conducted to identify knowledge studies of undergraduate students about STI. The electronic database MEDLINE was searched for articles published in the past 5 years, using the following MeSH terms: “Sexually Transmitted Diseases,” “Knowledge,” “University,” and “Students.” Studies’ titles and abstracts were screened for eligibility and relevant articles were read in full and included in the review. Results: A total of nine articles were selected for the final analysis. When compared to other courses, health students had higher rates of knowledge and showed more correct answers to the questions about STI than students from other courses. For some students, the consciousness acquired at the university acted as a protection factor to avoid risky sexual behavior. In contrast, in one study, only 13% of the students declared feeling they had enough knowledge to avoid getting infected. The source of knowledge may vary. Concerning a Chinese study, students declared their knowledge about STI was obtained mainly at school. HIV was the best known STI, although 90% of the participants in one study were unaware that an infected person might not have any symptoms. Comparisons between sex and age evidenced knowledge variation in some studies. Conclusion: The average of knowledge level about STI among university students varies between 30% and 60% in the analyzed studies. HIV/AIDS was the best known STI and this result shows the need for emphasizing other STI information among university students.

Introduction: Men who have sex with men (MSM) have a higher prevalence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in relation to general population. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the sociodemographic profile and risk factors associated with MSM diagnosed with HIV in a Counseling and Testing Center (CTC) in Rio Verde (Goiás) during the year of 2018. Methods: This is an observational cross-sectional study with descriptive and retrospective quantitative approach. Information was collected during pretest and post-test counseling carried out with users attended at the CTC. Results: The sample consisted of 126 MSM individuals, 124 were tested for HIV, of which 96 were nonreactive, 28 reagents, and 2 did not perform the test. Among the 28 (22.2%) MSM who presented HIV-positive serology, the average age was 27.8 years, 21 (78%) were single, 17 (65%) were brown, and 12 (43%) were service sector workers. Of the total, 22 (79%) had no previous STI and 18 (64.3%) had more than one partner. Concerning drug use in the past 12 months, 25 (89.3%) drank alcohol, and of these, 17 (68%) reported occasional consumption. Regarding the use of condoms with fixed partnership in the past 12 months, 9 (32%) used and 10 (36%) did not use a condom because they trust their partners. In relation to the use of condoms with occasional partners, 10 (35%) reported inconsistent use in sexual relations. With reference to the reason for not using it, 11% did not like it, 7% trusted the partner, 4% did not have time to wear it, and 4% did not believe in its effectiveness. Conclusion: Most MSM diagnosed with HIV are young, single, brown, have multiple partners, and inconsistent use of condoms in fixed and occasional relations. This highlights the need for preventive strategies that reach this population group.

Abstract:
Abstract The response and operation of a heat flux gage is studied using sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis is the process by which one determines the sensitivity of a model output to changes in the model parameters. This process uses sensitivity coefficients, which are defined as partial derivatives of field variables (e.g. temperature) with respect to model parameters (e.g. thermal properties and boundary conditions). Computing sensitivity coefficients, in addition to the response of a heat flux gage, aids in identifying model parameters that significantly impact the temperature response. A control volume finite element based code is used to implement numerical sensitivity coefficient calculations, allowing general problems to be studied. Sensitivity coefficients are discussed for the well known Gardon gage.

Abstract:
This paper is Part I of a study concerned with developing a formal framework for modelling air-cooled gas turbine cycles and deals with basic thermodynamic issues. Such cycles involve gas mixtures with varying composition which must be modelled realistically. A possible approach is to define just two components, air and gas, the latter being the products of stoichiometric combustion of the fuel with air. If these components can be represented as ideal gases, the entropy increase due to compositional mixing, although a true exergy loss, can be ignored for the purpose of performance prediction. This provides considerable simplification. Consideration of three idealised simple cycles shows that the introduction of cooling with an associated thermal mixing loss does not necessarily result in a loss of cycle efficiency. This is no longer true when real gas properties and turbomachinery losses are included. The analysis clarifies the role of the cooling losses and shows the importance of assessing performance in the context of the complete cycle. There is a strong case for representing the cooling losses in terms of irreversible entropy production as this provides a formalised framework, clarifies the modelling difficulties and aids physical interpretation. Results are presented which show the effects on performance of varying cooling flowrates and cooling losses. A comparison between simple and reheat cycles highlights the rôle of the thermal mixing loss. Detailed modelling of the heat transfer and cooling losses is discussed in Part II of this paper.

Abstract:
Abstract Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis (SHS) is an energy efficient process for the synthesis of refractory ceramics and intermetallic compounds, and composites of these materials including functionally gradient materials (FGMs). The process utilizes the large exothermic heat of reaction between two or more elements (or compounds) in order to convert the reactants into one or more useful products. The products of SHS, in general, have been observed to possess significant amounts of residual porosity. It has been reported that a certain amount of liquid phase during the reaction aids in the consolidation process. In order to control the amount of liquid formed during SHS, it is necessary to develop a good understanding of the parametric influence of the various process parameters such as pre-heat, dilution, heat losses, etc. on the SHS reaction. In this study, a commercial finite element program, ABAQUS (1996), has been used to simulate SHS and to study the effects of process parameters that influence and help control the reaction. Processing maps have been developed for Ni-Al system based on the FEA results that can aid in syntheses of nickel aluminides and FGMs using these compounds with low residual porosities.

Poverty is one of the biggest problems in developing countries. Poverty is general scarcity or the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money. Poverty issue is examined on a sector and national levels. Addition it is examined in households and gender level in many countries. When these studies are examined, the most affected segments of poverty are women and children. In our study: The relationship between the woman poverty rates and female labour force participation rates were examined in Turkey. Poor children do not only occur in developing countries. In developed countries and in countries with high income levels, poor children are likely to occur. Adults’ poverty is possible to solve in time with employment, aids and donations. However, child poverty continues in the future. Unfortunately, aid to households are not enough. So the problem must be clearly demonstrated and implemented specific policies for children. Child is the social structure of the subject. Damage to children will be create a domino effect in the future. Consequently, it should be recognized and taken measures taken in advance.

Abstract:
Soft tissues hollow structures are capable of collapsing not only under their own power but also able to employ movements of their neighbors to aid their function of propelling content. An intensive study of collapsible hollow structures is a recent development and no general law recognising this convenient coupling of the dynamics of neighboring organs is available in the literature. The literature on whole organ physiology was analysed and examples of neighboring organs providing assistance to soft tissue structures was collected. We offer the title Covenant of NOA to the arrangement that soft tissue structures have with their neighbors. The calf muscle pump and parturition are obvious examples of NOA. From examining videocystometric recordings, we are able to offer, as the latest to a long list of known NOAs, the assistance of the pelvic diaphragm to the urinary bladder that aids the latter in emptying completely. The modeling of soft tissue hollow organs as functioning somewhat in isolation must be considered antediluvian. Very often, soft tissue structures come in pairs to implement NOA: it is time we too hearkened to the Covenant of NOA.

Abstract:
Driven by the study of Leland and Wright [1], this manuscript delves into the qualitative understanding of energy harvesting using axially-loaded beams. Using a simple nonlinear electromechanical model and the method of multiple scales, we study the general nonlinear physics of energy harvesting from a piezoelectric beam subjected to static axial loading and traversal dynamic excitation. We obtain analytical expressions for the steady-state response amplitude, the voltage drop across a resistive load, and the output power. We utilize these expression to study the effect of the axial loading on the overall nonlinear behavior of the harvester. It is demonstrated that, in addition to the ability of tuning the harvester to the excitation frequency via axial load variations, the axial load aids in i) increasing the electric damping in the system thereby enhancing the energy transfer from the beam to the electric load, ii) amplifying the effect of the external excitation on the structure, and hence, increases the steady-state response amplitude and output voltage, and iii) increasing the bandwidth of the harvester by enhancing the effective nonlinearity of the system.

Abstract:
Abstract Serious games (SGs) are motivational and practical pedagogical tools that have been widely used in design education. SGs seem to be an efficient way to give instructions on innovation processes (IPs), offering unique and attractive environments to support situated learning. While there has been much interest in SGs of the IPs type, there is very little research about the design framework to reduce the complexity and time consumption of their design process. This paper presents the preliminary results of our ongoing study: a design framework adapted to innovation SGs. The framework integrates eight general design frameworks/models/methodologies for SGs. Besides, it introduces a new stage “analysis of traditional teaching experience,” which conducive to the early phases of the design. We use a case study to prove the value of this stage. First, it aids designers in defining the teaching objectives of innovation SGs, that is, choosing required competencies from innovation competency frameworks. More importantly, it helps identify game mechanics that may contribute to the realization of teaching objectives. This stage should support designers successfully making the transition from traditional innovation teaching towards SGs.

This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes a method for evaluating the received coverage from Automatic Identification System (AIS) shore sites and the availability of historic vessel position reports along the Ohio River. The network of AIS shoreside sites installed and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the US Coast Guard (USCG) receive information transmitted from vessels; however, reception of these transmissions is generally line-of-sight between the vessel and the AIS site antenna. Reception may also be affected by factors such as the quality of the transceiver installation aboard the vessel as well as the state of the equipment at the receiving site. Understanding how to define and quantify coverage gaps along the inland river system can inform research utilizing AIS data, provide information on the performance of the AIS network, and provide guidance for efforts to address identified coverage gaps

The main stages of the development of an augmented reality application are shown: the development of virtual models, the establishment of the Unity3D game engine, the development of a mobile application, testing and demonstration of work. Particular attention is paid to the use of scripts to rotate and move virtual models. The in-house development of the augmented reality mobile application for accomplishing tasks on a projection drawing is presented. Abstract:
This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes a method for evaluating the received coverage from Automatic Identification System (AIS) shoreside sites along the Missouri River managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Lock Operations Management Application (LOMA), and presents the results of that analysis. The purpose is to identify AIS coverage gaps in the current system. Reception of AIS transmissions between shore-based transceivers and vessels is generally line-of-sight between the vessel and the AIS site antenna. However, signal reception may be affected by factors such as the distance and terrain between the vessel and the transceiver site, quality of the transceiver installation, state of the equipment either aboard the vessel or at the shore transceiver station, and atmospheric phenomena. Quantifying coverage gaps along the inland waterways system can inform research that uses AIS data, provide information on the performance of the AIS network, and provide guidance for efforts to address coverage gaps to improve navigation safety. In autumn 2020, severe shoaling was occurring on the Missouri River. As the shoals were identified, the Kansas City District requested the LOMA system transmit AIS Aid to Navigation (AtoN) to mark the shoals in several critical areas. However, vessel pilots sometimes reported that they were not receiving the AIS AtoN being transmitted. At the request of the Kansas City District, the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (ERDC-CHL), conducted a coverage analysis using data collected from the LOMA AIS transceivers in the area to determine if there were coverage issues and their extent and to aid in determining the best means of addressing any coverage gaps.

Abstract:
In recent years, mission-oriented approaches have received growing interest in science, technology and innovation (STI) policies against the background of two developments. First, while so-called “horizontal” or “generic” approaches to research, technology and innovation policies have largely been successful in improving the general innovation performance or the rate of innovation, there are perceived limitations in terms of insufficiently addressing the direction of technological change and innovation. Second, “grand societal challenges” emerged on policy agendas, such as climate change, security, food and energy supply or ageing populations, which call for thematic orientation and the targeting of research and innovation efforts. In addition, the apparent success of some mission-oriented initiatives in countries like China, South Korea, and the United States in boosting technological development for purposes of strengthening competitiveness contributed to boosting the interest in targeted and directional government interventions in STI. Against the backdrop of this renewed interest in mission-oriented STI policy, the OECD has addressed the growing importance of this topic and launched a project looking into current experiences with Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy (MOIP). The present study on MOIP in Austria was commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Energy, Mobility, Environment, Innovation and Technologiy (BMK) and comprises the Austrian contributions to this OECD project. The study aims at contributing Austrian experiences to the international debate and to stimulate a national debate on MOIP.

Boettcher, Seth J., Courtney Gately, Alexandra L. Lizano, Alexis Long, and Alexis Yelvington. Part 3: Case Study Appendices to the Technical Reports. Edited by Gabriel Eckstein. Texas A&M University School of Law Program in Natural Resources Systems, May 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.37419/eenrs.brackishgroundwater.p3.

Abstract:
This Case Study Appendix to the Technical Reports expands on regulations in San Antonio and El Paso where these water alternatives are in place. The goal of this report is to provide insight into the legal and regulatory barriers, challenges, and opportunities for these technologies to go online. Each desalination and water recycling faciality implementation site must comply with various laws and regulations. The information in these Case Studies comes from the study of brackish groundwater desalination and water recycling facilities currently operating in Texas. While there is no updated “one-stop-shop” resource where a municipal leader can find a list of all the necessary permits to build, operate, and maintain such facilities, this Technical Report aims to compile the existing, available information in an organized and accessible fashion. The Desalination Technical report is the third in a series of three reports which make up the Project. These reports examine regulations surrounding desalination and water recycling. The companion reports generally highlight building, operating, and monitoring requirements for water recycling facilities in Texas.

Gutierrez-Arias, Ruvistay, Dawid Pieper, Carole Lunny, Rodrigo Torres-Castro, Raúl Aguilera-Eguía, and Pamela Seron. Strategies used to manage overlap of primary study data by exercise-related overviews authors. Protocol for a systematic methodological review. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.5.0161.

Full text
Abstract:
Review question / Objective: This methodological review aims to find out how often strategies for handling overlapping data from primary studies are used across the systematic reviews considered by overviews authors focused on exercise-related interventions in different health conditions. Secondarily, we aim to describe the overlap strategies used, the authors' acknowledgment of not using any management strategy as a methodological weakness, and the congruence between the protocol and the final published overview in terms of overlap management. Study designs to be included: We will include overviews that consider SRs with or without meta-analysis (MA), without distinction of the methodological design of the primary studies included. The definition of SR adopted by the authors of the overviews will not be considered as an eligibility criterion. Overviews that also include primary studies not considered in the selected SRs will not be excluded. An overview is defined as any study: 1) aimed at synthesising general information, methods, and outcome data from SRs, 2) that makes explicit the inclusion and exclusion criteria for SRs, 3) that includes an explicit sear.

Hegazi, Sahar. Utilization of operations research in Egypt. Population Council, 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1997.1018.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to maximize the utilization of operations research (OR) findings in Egypt to strengthen research efforts contributing to the improvement of the family planning (FP) and reproductive health (RH) care program. To date, the field of OR in Egypt has not conducted a systematic review of the utilization of the OR studies completed over the last decade. The long-term objective of this study, as noted in this report, was to maximize the utilization of OR and strengthen future efforts contributing to the improvement of the FP and RH care program in Egypt. The study’s sample included selected studies completed by the principal agencies conducting OR in Egypt—Family Health International (FHI) (1989–1992) and the ANE OR/TA Project of the Population Council (1992–present). The analysis of the qualitative findings was based on a framework applied in a similar study in Indonesia by the ANE OR/TA Project and built on three elements: research product, scientific network, and researcher-audience relationship. Analysis of data indicated a general satisfaction with the contribution of OR to the FP and RH program in Egypt.

Haider, Huma. Humanitarian Access Issues Linked to Peace Processes: Advantages, Disadvantages and Examples. Institute of Development Studies, April 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.057.

Full text
Abstract:
Political mediators and humanitarian negotiators both seek to stabilise a conflict situation. However, the goal of political mediators is to build a political consensus to address the causes of the conflict, while the goal of humanitarian negotiators is to address the immediate humanitarian consequences: specifically access to aid and protection of vulnerable populations. This report provides a general overview of potential advantages, disadvantages, risks and challenges of linking humanitarian issues to ceasefires and peace processes, based on a range of academic and practitioner literature. This is followed by a case study of Syria, where there is some emergent academic literature that looks at the incorporation of humanitarian access issues in ceasefires and peace processes—and outcomes for civilians, in terms of protection and access to aid. It also takes a brief look at civilian monitoring and recent humanitarian ceasefires in the case of the COVID-19 pandemic. Examples and evidence of humanitarian issues linked to ceasefires and peace processes—and the impacts on protection of civilians and humanitarian access—is extremely sparse. This is stated in the literature itself, which covers varying aspects of this research.

Shaw, Jackie, Masa Amir, Tessa Lewin, Jean Kemitare, Awa Diop, Olga Kithumbu, Danai Mupotsa, and Stella Odiase. Contextualising Healing Justice as a Feminist Organising Framework in Africa. Institute of Development Studies, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2022.063.

Full text
Abstract:
Healing justice is a political organising framework that aims to address the systemic causes of injustice experienced by marginalised peoples due to the harmful impacts of oppressive histories, intergenerational trauma, and structural violence. It recognises that these damaging factors generate collective trauma, which manifests in negative physical, mental–emotional, and spiritual effects in activists and in the functioning of their movements. Healing justice integrates collective healing in political organising processes, and is contextualised as appropriate to situational needs. This provided the rationale for a research study to explore the potential of healing justice for feminist activists in Africa, and how pathways to collective healing could be supported in specific contexts. Research teams in DRC, Senegal, and South Africa conducted interviews with feminist activists and healers, in addition to supplementary interviews across sub-regions of Africa and two learning events with wider stakeholders.

Zimmermann, Ivan, Maria Gonçalves, Loraine Dal-Ri, and Lais Morais. Systematic review on the utility values of health states in patients with herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, July 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.7.0125.

Full text
Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The study aims to synthesize, through a review of existing scientific literature, the Health State Utility Value (HSUV) of patients with herpes zoster or postherpetic neuralgia. Condition being studied: Herpes zoster is caused by the reactivation of a primary varicella zoster virus infection. Postherpetic neuralgia is the most common complication, which is defined as pain in a dermal distribution that is maintained for at least 90 days after the rash. The pain caused by postherpetic neuralgia is often debilitating and affects physical functioning, psychological and well-being. Thus, the postherpetic neuralgia has a profound negative impact on functional status and quality of life, and generally results in substantial utilization of health services. An increase in the incidence of post-herpetic neuralgia and herpes zoster is expected, due to the increase in life expectancy, therefore, the result of this review may be important for public policy decisions.
