<p>The correct parallelism of guiding planes when constructing a Removable Partial Denture not only defines the axis of insertion and removal of the prosthesis, but also limits the possible axes of movement during functioning. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to compare some techniques and the use of an intra-oral device for those preparations. Dummies were performed in a direct manner, simulating the absence of teeth 15, 45, 12 and 42. The four preparation techniques chosen were: Group 1 – freehand preparation; group 2 - guide pins; Group 3 - crown guides and Group 4 - parallel intraoral device – ParalAB. No statistical difference was shown between the mean values of angles found for the freehand (82.85°) and guide pin (83.60°) groups. Also, no statistical significant difference was observed between the mean values of angles found for the resin cap (of 88.83) and intraoral device (88.58 º) groups; however they were superior to the findings for the freehand and guide pin groups. The studied methods are effective for what they were proposed; however, one should select the method according to the experience and skills, to promote the best results.</p>

Abstract:
Tour guides are very important for elderly tourists, but very few studies have focused on their roles in the senior tourism market. Thus, this study proposed that senior tourists’ perceptions of tour guides’ professional competencies play an important role in the formation of rapport with the tour guide. Rapport is a concept to show a close relationship between the customer and the employee. Additionally, it was hypothesized that this rapport enhances satisfaction with the guide service, tour satisfaction, and word of mouth. Lastly, the moderating role of product knowledge was proposed during the theory-building process. The data were collected from 325 elderly tourists in Korea. The results indicated that professional skills and professional attitude have a positive influence on rapport with the tour guide, which in turn positively affects satisfaction with the guide service, tour satisfaction, and word of mouth. Furthermore, this study found the important role of product knowledge as a moderator.

Abstract:
This paper reports on a project findings concerning the design of a Supplementary Reading Book using Cultural Language Learning Approach ( CLLA). The project was conducted in Yogyakarta, Indonesia that generally aimed at designing supplementary reading materials using CLLA as a guide book for tourist guides who worked for Sonobudoyo Museum. The book is entitled “The Javanese Cultural Heritages Reserved in Sonobudoyo Museum (JCHRSM)”. This utilized a developmental research design, which consisted of three procedures, namely: (1) exploration, aiming to analyze the needs of the tour guides of Sonobudoyo Museum; (2) development, to design a supplementary reading guide book for the (candidate) tourist guides working for Sonobudoyo Museum; and (3) validation, to find the designed guide book accuracy. This study found: (1) The tour guides’ needs was JCHRSM using CLLA; (2) the designed book was matched with the tour guides’ needs; and (3) the designed guide book was judged accurate and compatible for Sonobudoyo tour guides. This was judged accurate since: (1) it was designed based on the results of the tour guide needs analysis and book’s content analysis as suggested by McDonough and McDonough; (2) the 12 times cyclical treatments resulted continually learning improvement on the trainees’ reading skills; and (3) the guide book validation through statistical analysis using Mean Difference (Md) formula and One-shot study experimental design yielded significant gain score between the average score of pretest and post-test, i.e. 8.2>5.6. Besides, the result of FGD (Focus Group Discussion) also indicated that the supplementary reading guide book was recommended as an alternative reference especially for Sonobudoyo tour guides.

Abstract:
<div><p><em>Life skills education was introduced by the Kenya government to replace the HIV and AIDS education which was not positively perceived by its implementers. The purpose of this study was to investigate Secondary schools’ readiness towards the implementation of life skills education in Trans-Nzoia County. The main objectives were to determine teachers’ training on life skills education implementation in Trans-Nzoia County, to assess the availability of teaching and learning materials and infrastructure for the implementation of life skills education in Trans-Nzoia County, to evaluate teachers’ attitude towards the implementation of life skills education in secondary schools of Trans-Nzoia County, and to establish school management attitude towards the implementation of life skills education in secondary schools of Trans-Nzoia County. The study was guided by Work readiness theory by Catherine, Walker, Mathew and Cathy. This study employed concurrent triangulation study design with mixed methodology, where a target population of 2,234 teachers was studied. The study used concurrent sampling technique. Probability sampling with a simple random sample was used to sample thirty percent of schools. It further purposively sampled out thirty percent of secondary schools principals, deputy principals, guidance and counselling heads of department and teachers assigned to teach life skills who participated in the study. Instruments of data collection included interview schedule, observation guide and document analysis guide. A pilot study was carried out to establish the reliability of research instruments. Data was analyzed descriptively and thematically. The study was significant in contribution to the formulation of policies for life skills education in secondary schools, recognition of life skills education in the development of the nation by the stake holders, consideration of school management and teacher factors that are related to the teaching of life skills education by curriculum developers and also serve as a reference material to potential researchers in the related field of study. The findings of the study indicated inadequate training of teachers in life skills education, inadequate use of teaching learning materials, some element of unwillingness by teachers in the implementation of life skills education in secondary schools of Trans-Nzoia County. There was also inadequate supervision and support towards teachers by administrators towards the implementation of life skills education in Secondary schools of Trans-Nzoia County. The recommendations were that the government should put a policy in place as an affirmative action to train teachers in the implementation of life skills education. Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development should review the implementation programme in terms of time and curricular and nationally evaluate the subject. </em></p></div>

Abstract:
In many e-learning settings, allowing students to choose which skills to practice encourages their motivation and contributes to learning. However, when given choice, students may prefer to practice skills that they already master, rather than practice skills they need to master. On the other hand, requiring students only to practice their required skills may reduce their motivation and lead to dropout. In this paper, we model this tradeoff as a multi-agent planning task, which we call SWOPP (Supervisor- Worker Problem with Partially Overlapping goals), involving two agents—a supervisor (teacher) and a worker (student)—each with different, yet non-conflicting, goals. The supervisor and worker share joint goals (mastering skills). The worker plans to achieve his/her own goals (completing an e-learning session) at a minimal cost (effort required to solve problems). The supervisor guides the worker towards achieving the joint goals by controlling the problems in the choice set for the worker. We provide a formal model for the SWOPP task and two sound and complete algorithms for the supervisor to guide the worker’s plan to achieve their joint goals. We deploy SWOPP for the first time in a real-world study to personalize math questions for K5 students using an e-learning software in schools. We show that SWOPP was able to guide students’ interactions with the software to practice necessary skills without deterring their motivation.

Ibrahim, Azza Fathi, and Azza Anwar Aly. "Development of clinical judgment model to guide nursing interns." Clinical Nursing Studies 6, no. 4 (April 16, 2018): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.5430/cns.v6n4p1.

Full text
Abstract:
Every day and every moment, nurses have to deal with a wide variety of patient’s issues and problems, with multiple difficulties and conflicts. Nurse’s judgment considers the core component of healthcare activities. This judgment directs her/his achievement and choices, not for her/him only, but for other healthcare professionals. Thus, nurses have to be competent observers and decision makers with reasoning and sound regarding their intervention and practice. Clinical judgment skills are essential aptitudes in nursing practice, predominantly, in nursing internship intermediary period, in which, a graduate nurse faced several predicaments and obstacles in such transitory experience from academic work to real labor. The present study aimed to develop a clinical judgment model to guide nursing interns in their nursing practice and assess its effectiveness on nursing interns’ clinical judgment knowledge and skills. The study passed through Quasi-experimental pretest-posttest research design. A stratified random sampling approach was used to recruit 50 nursing interns as an experimental group out of 305. The collection of data was carried out in the following hospitals of nurses’ intern’s training: Damanhur Medical National Institute, El Raee El Saleh, El Farok and Kafer El Dawar Hospitals, in Damanhur, Egypt. The Clinical Judgment Evaluation Sheet (CJES) was employed to collect necessary data. It included two parts: the Clinical Judgment Knowledge Test that was developed by Fathi & Aly in 2018, beside the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric (LCJR) that was developed by Kathie Lasater et al., in 2009. Results before using the developed model demonstrated that there were observed lacking in knowledge and skills about clinical judgment in nursing practice among experimental group. Then improvements were noticed after using the developed clinical judgment model. These results confirm that the use of an educational and self-learning reference such as the developed clinical judgment model is a successful tool for Egyptian nursing interns in nursing practice. Conclusion and recommendations: There is an understandable deficiency of nursing interns’ clinical judgment knowledge and skills in nursing practice. But, after using the developed clinical judgment model with them as a self-learning reference, it was confirmed that it is a helpful approach to develop and improve clinical judgment knowledge and skills of nursing interns. Creativity in using instructional aides and self-learning approaches is an essential ability that is important among nurse educators and preceptors who direct nursing intern’s performance. For further sturdies, replicate the study using the developed model with different subjects in nursing practice or develop new instructive models about creative, reflective, discovery, and decision-making models among nursing interns.

Abstract:
Purpose The skill set required to be a professional in any profession is inherent in the qualifications required for entrance to that profession. The ability to demonstrate leadership in the middle to upper echelons of that profession is demonstrably different. The School of Information Studies at the Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga Australia sought to explore what a postgraduate qualification in the leadership of the profession might look like and what the demand for such a qualification might be. The purpose of this paper is to detail that research effort and the outcomes. Design/methodology/approach The study undertook a number of different approaches including engaging in networks of professional colleagues globally and a series of focus groups in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The outcomes were analyzed in terms of the expectations of what a new degree might contain as well as the enrollment prospects for such a degree. Findings There was a strong ground-swell of support for a new degree of Masters of Information Leadership. The combination of subjects from the LIS environment together with subjects from a MBA environment was strongly endorsed. These areas of interest were documented in the paper along with recommendations. Research limitations/implications There is a fertile ground for research here in two ways. First, there is much scope for the examination of the course requirements and how they sit in a future work environment. This is especially the case where there is a convergence of the interests of the galleries, libraries, archives and museums sectors. Second, there is much to be done as the authors look at leadership skills sets for future information environments which are highly speculative. Practical implications This study has produced a set of requirements for a new Masters of Information Leadership. It is a very useful set of requirements to base future studies. There was also a very strong requirement for real life aspects to such a course rather than theoretical exercises as has been the current academic practice. Originality/value This study is quite original as it sought to engage practitioners in different areas and sectors in Australia aiming to ensure that the resulting academic program was closely aligned with practitioner need.

Although education professionals frequently use social skills training with students who exhibit significant behavioral problems, researchers continue to question its efficacy and generalizability. Because social skill deficits are predictive of adult adjustment problems, robust and omnibus interventions to remediate social deficits in children and youths are paramount. In this article we examine the social skills training research-to-practice process and argues that a logical and attendant line of rigorous study is currently lacking. Multiple areas of social inquiry are drawn from to discuss the need for conceptual frameworks to guide investigation and offer a way for researchers to design and interpret social interaction research.

Abstract:
Laboratory practicals engage students in complex thinking to build their scientific knowledge and understanding. Surprisingly few studies connect the development of students’ cognitive and metacognitive skills for learning in the laboratory practical with foundational skills for researching. Librarians strive to establish teaching partnerships with academics to contextualise research skills within curriculum content. However, pedagogical models to make research skills explicit and guide libraryfaculty collaborations are lacking. This study explores the Research Skill Development (RSD) framework (Willison & O'Regan 2006/2018; see the first article in this issue) to extrapolate students’ research skills in a first-year biology practical unit. A qualitative research design was applied to identify research skills in the unit’s laboratory manual and in descriptive observations of students in five laboratory practicals. Results show students engaged in the research skills articulated by the RSD, yet these skills were implied rather than explicitly taught. Implications suggest that fundamental research skills which enable student preparedness for research can be overlooked in practical curricula. Research skills remaining unrecognised impacts learning and teaching, including the contribution librarians could make in this context. Findings demonstrated that the RSD is a useful theoretical construct and a priori framework to make research skills visible to educators.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the specifics of video-excursions as a variety of the case-study method. The authors identify the major methodological problems of currently implemented tour-guide HE instructional courses, and reveal the key detriments to the students’ knowledge and skill development in the sphere of organization and realization of excursions. The authors describe the video-excursion case study method as a way of distance familiarization and content/quality/structure/technology evaluation of real-life museum excursions. The method presupposes problem-solving: the students are required to analyse the video recordings of excursions held at museums of different types, specializations and ranges of activity. The authors have developed an expert evaluation form which the students fill in while analyzing the video recording. The form consists of nine sections for an evaluation of the methodology and mastery of the tour guide, the content of the excursion, the specifics of interaction with a given group of tourists, the exhibition, functional and emotional impact. The article provides teacher recommendations and outlines the competences (content, activity, communicative, personal) that the video-excursion method serves to develop. The authors also emphasize that the method promotes the students’ expert skills (criteria setting, practical evaluation), which is conducive of learner autonomy.

Abstract:
A course designed on the premise of needs analysis contributes, to some extent, to the threshold for curriculum development and syllabus design. This article presents an argument that needs analysis is an integral part of course design by focusing on the skills of reading and writing both as learning and target needs for tour guide diploma students in Kenya. The study adopted a descriptive research design and the data is extracted from Orang’i (2013) MA study. It emerged that reading tasks of scanning, skimming, reading for note taking, and summarizing revealed needs as learnings for both learners and teachers. In addition, the writing skills tasks that revealed learning needs for both learners and teachers were developing ideas, grouping ideas, and spelling correctly. Further, reading tasks that revealed target needs are business letters, e-mail messages, fax messages, instruction booklets, minutes of a meeting, tickets, and invoices. On the other hand, writing tasks that revealed target needs were writing: business letters, e-mail messages, reports, itineraries, tour commentaries, legal documents, and brochures. Based on the findings of this study, it can be summed up that learners’ needs are revealed whenever a needs analysis is conducted and should, therefore, be a must-do in any course design.

Abstract:
Objective:To evaluate the effect of scheduled bedside skills modeling for third-year medical students on their neurology clerkship. Methods:During the 2012–2014 academic years, 56 third-year medical students participated in a curricular pilot program involving a scheduled bedside skills modeling experience during the first week of their neurology clerkship, whereas 131 students underwent the typical rotation. The experience consisted of observing a faculty member conduct a comprehensive encounter on a new outpatient. To promote active learning, students were provided an observation guide to document questions and observations. An anonymous survey was conducted at the end of each clerkship block assessing student exposure to bedside skills modeling. Using qualitative thematic analysis, observation guide statements were transcribed and coded into emergent learning themes. Results:A total of 57.4% (95% confidence interval [CI] 43.3%–71.5%) of students in the modeling group reported observing both a comprehensive history and neurologic examination vs 37.5% (95% CI 28.2%–46.8%) in the nonmodeling groups (p = 0.023). A total of 253 observation statements were transcribed and coded from the observation guides. The most common learning themes included (1) strategies for performing a neurologic examination, (2) techniques for eliciting a neurologic history, and (3) importance of detail and thoroughness of the history and examination. Conclusions:Our study demonstrated that there was a significant increase in structured observation by students of neurologic bedside skills with the inclusion of a scheduled modeling experience, and we provide a qualitative description of the most common learning themes associated with this experience.

Abstract:
Purpose Food guides are graphic representations of food-based dietary guidelines that support national health policies and programming. They are visual aids simplifying complex nutritional messaging for the public. While pyramid and circle formats are the most common shapes in use worldwide, the dinner plate format is increasing in use due to its perceived effectiveness. However, research examining visual attributes of food guide graphics, and the dinner plate model specifically, is limited. The purpose of this paper is to systematically compare and analyse key visual attributes of plate food guide graphics (across multiple examples) to assess their potential for effective visual communication of nutrition messaging. Design/methodology/approach This study engages in a qualitative analysis of compositional elements of food guide graphics. Data collection and analysis are grounded in the methods of compositional interpretation, which includes a qualitative, descriptive approach to establishing a thematic survey of the data. Findings Unique visual attributes of the plate food guide (including image content, spatial organisation and expressive content) present challenges in the communication of key nutritional messaging regarding proportionality, moderation and overall usability. Practical implications A better understanding of the visual attributes of the plate food guide model will contribute to improved design and development of this key public health tool by researchers, educators and health practitioners. Additionally, the examination of visual attributes has implications for the study of food guide understanding and use. Originality/value This study highlights the need for critical visual skills in qualitative health research, and to address gaps in health education more broadly.
