Abstract:
This essay focuses on the remediating effects of photography of natural history museum taxidermy. How do these works refigure the apparent verisimilitude of taxidermied animals and their realistic diorama “habitats”? And how do they implicate viewers? Applying historian and curator Rachel Poliquin’s typology of taxidermy to a number of examples, I show how the “talkative thingness” of taxidermied animals — their tendency to signify in excess of their materiality — is expressed in the overlapping descriptive, biographical, cautionary, and experiential aspects of a number of contemporary photographers of natural history museum taxidermies.

Abstract:
We explored the relationship between psychiatric diagnosis and the presence of stuffed animals at the bedside in a population of adult female psychiatric inpatients. One of the authors made approximately weekly surveys of the wardrooms of adult psychiatric inpatients over twelve months for the presence of displayed stuffed animals. The observer was blind to the diagnosis of 80% of the patients, and the study or its hypothesis was not known to other physicians. The discharge diagnoses of patients displaying stuffed animals were recorded and compared with those of the ward population in general. Among 36 female patients who displayed stuffed animals in their rooms, Borderline Personality Disorder was diagnosed in 22 (61%) of these patients. Of 447 adult female patients admitted to the same unit over the same period, only 17% were noted to be diagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder. Stuffed animals as a bedside clinical clue may suggest evaluation for Borderline Personality Disorder.

Abstract:
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, well-dressed women around the world embraced the emerging trend of animal-bedecked styles. Both live and stuffed animals were lavishly featured in daily ensembles, and the beauty of the natural world was assimilated into the world of fashion. This paper will examine this trend and its various avenues, looking specifically at the incorporation of live and stuffed animals into dress, the popularity of taxidermy, and the methods of reanimating dead creatures. The paper also takes into account the dual underlying reasons for this trend: the pervasive interest in the natural world and the special affinity women had for animals.

Abstract:
Among the features of the burial rite of many Bronze Age kurgan cultures in Eastern Europe, there is one interesting common feature, when the deceased is accompanied by the ritual remains of hoofed animals, which are archaeologically recorded in the form of skulls and the lower parts of the limbs. Following M. P. Gryaznov (1977), the term “animal’s hide” or “stuffed animal” was assigned to these ritual objects, which were placed in burials to substitute the whole animals by the pars pro toto principle. In the Early Bronze Age, the main area of the use of ritual animals in the funerary ritual was the Lower Kuban region, where from a quarter to a third of the burials of the Novotitorovskaya and East-Azov Catacomb Grave cultures were accompanied by hides of small cattle. During the Middle Bronze Age, this burial practice significantly expanded its range and is found in all catacomb cultures of the Don basin and the steppe Ciscaucasia, with its greatest manifestation in the Seversky Donets basin. In the post-Catacomb period, the tradition of using of animal hides and stuffed animals in the funerary rite was preserved only in the Dnieper-Don Babino Culture. In the Late Bronze Age, this practice was unevenly represented in the Srubnaya cultural region, most massively in the Dnieper-Don region. Archaeological contexts, together with ethnographic, folklore and mythological analogies, allow us to interpret the ritual remains of ungulates as the animal–psychopomp that accompanied the soul of the deceased to the afterlife.

Abstract:
Environmental enrichment (EE) can be used to enhance the environment of various animals. The aim of this pilot study was to determine the effects of seven EE activities (Bonding, Bubble machine, Conspecific play, Interactive toy, Playhouse, Stuffed food toy and Tug play) on dog behaviour, pre- and post-EE for dogs housed in an office environment during training as part of an assistance dog training programme. EE activities resulted in a significant increase in the frequency of relaxation behaviours (p < 0.01) and a significant reduction in alert (p < 0.01) and stress behaviours (p = 0.02). Results suggest various benefits of the different activities with Conspecific Play and Playhouse activities having the greatest overall positive behaviour change when compared to the other activities. The food-based EE activities (Interactive toy and Stuffed food toy) had the least behaviour change of all the activities provided. Findings will be of interest to pet owners, animal rescue centres, dog trainers and working dog organisations.

Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive bacterium, anaerobic facultative, that grows under refrigerator temperature and it can cause listeriosis in human and animals. It is widely distributed in the environment and it has been isolated from food of animal and vegetal origin that was associated to outbreaks of high lethality in many coutries. Thus, this bacterium represents an important pathogen to the public health. Ready-to-eat products, like cooked stuffed food, within them, frankfurters are associated to human listeriosis in many countries. Taking into consideration the importance of the subject and the need of data about it, the occurrence of Listeria spp. and L. monocytogenes in industrial plants, in meat raw materials, in slurry and frankfurters was investigated. Theses samples were harvest in this two production plants with FIS; in one of them GMP, HACCP and SOP were implemented. The results of the microbiological analysis were submitted to the program @Risk to obtain the danger analysis; the mean values results showed that 7 to 9% of the frankfurters in the market may have L. monocytogenes. After serological typification, performed by Oswaldo Cruz Institute, 88 strains of L. monocytogenes were obtained from 106 samples; among them, 76 were harvest in the industrial plants that participate in the experiment, during a day shift production and 30 were harvest in the market. In serological typification, 95% of these strains were classified as serotypes 4b, 1/2a and 1/2b. Impressions about the behavior of the population that consumes frankfurters in the matters of storage proceedings and the pattern of consumption were obtained by the application of 500 questionnaires at random. The results of these questionnaires showed that the presence of the pathogenic serotypes of L. monocytogenes in meat raw materials, as well in frankfurters commercialized by heaps, and purchased like this by about 75% of the consumers interviewed, may represent a danger to the susceptible population, especially when considering the fact of 40% of the consumers said that they eat the frankfurters directly from the package, without cooking them. Besides the consumption practices, as unknown risk factors of the presence of L. monocytogenes found in frankfurters consumed in the country, we also have lack of epidemiological data, absence of patterns as well the deficient information given to the consumer associated to the incipient relation between federal regulatory agencies and the people

The present thesis aims to probe into how I feel blessed and touched by trivial things in daily life. Everything in life can be used as media for art creations. Ever since I could recall, stuffed animals have always been an indispensable spiritual support in my life. With their company, I can always find peace in my body and mind and feel protected by a blessing and warm force. When faced with ruthless oppression from the real life, I tend to transfer my feelings through stuffed animals to express my inner dreams and desires. The present project is created surrounding the theme of “cuteness” in an attempt to translate my own emotional dependence on stuffed animals into a state of harmonization of object and ego. The project depicts my inner perception of happiness and cuteness in the form of illusional and fictional dialogue with simplified images and language, which are presented in multiple layers of black ink, to construct a new visual language. The outline of the thesis is as follows: Chapter 1 Motivation, purpose and scope of research Chapter 2 Interpretation of the present project from the perspective of animamix aesthetics and examples of current well-known artists in animamix aesthetics. Chapter 3 Elaboration of my way of thinking in the process of creation: from emotional dependence on stuffed animals to a stage of harmonization of object and ego to a presentation of surreal dreams. Chapter 4 Description of material and techniques employed in this present project and explanation of how they help build a visual effect through simplified images and language that create an illusionary setting. Chapter 5 Investigation of my research achievements between 2006 and 2008 through a series of painting works with a theme of illusionary dreams. Chapter 6 Conclusion: Review, examination of the value and meaning of the present project of water-ink creations and expectations of future possible creations and development.

Abstract:
This chapter places both the wild rabbits and the toy rabbit of The Velveteen Rabbit within a history of technological domination and the violent molding of animal bodies in the all-encompassing system of animal commodification. Walter Potter’s stuffed rabbits, taxidermies of once-living, historically real animals that do not look natural but instead resemble the rabbits of Beatrix Potter’s illustrations, point to the common origin of the image of the authentic wild animal and the denaturalized bodies of toy animals. The Velveteen Rabbit takes us to the world populated with denaturalized animals and haunted by the vision of the authentic natural animal, putting life into the plight of the thingified animal incorporated in the fully-fledged system of industrial capitalism.

Abstract:
This chapter takes the reader deep into the nineteenth-century afterlife of the Classical construction of nature, the wild, and the primitive and civilized, foundational to Victorian ideas of progress and to the nascent sciences that claimed the study of humanity as their own. It shows how the Natural History Courts of London’s Crystal Palace presented the marvels of ethnology and natural history, and how these displays were received in the context of nineteenth-century social evolutionist thought, which was itself built upon Classical foundations such as the account of primitive man in Lucretius’ De rerum natura. Against the Courts’ taxidermic dioramas of ‘savage life’, the ethnological casts displayed to the Victorian public prompted comparative questions about the evolutionary status of the non-European Other, while the ‘primitive’ nakedness of the casts created further parallels with the idealized nudity of Greek and Roman sculpture casts, engendering destabilizing dissonance with the connotations of civilization inscribed in the Classical ideal.

Abstract:
The stuffed toy market is quite large, with some manufacturers earning nearly half a billion dollars in revenue per year. However, the vast majority of manufacturers do not currently employ sustainable manufacturing techniques. This paper documents the development of a cost-effective stuffed product by placing an emphasis on sustainability within the design process while maintaining the user appeal of a traditional teddy bear. Specifications were determined by analyzing each of the four stages of the product timeline (extraction, manufacture, use, and disposal) to ensure that sustainability was considered throughout the lifecycle of the product. Material choice was a main focus of the extraction stage, and limiting new material usage was an important goal. Considerations for the manufacturing stage included carbon dioxide produced, waste generated, toxicity, and packaging. Specifications regarding the consumer’s use of the product included user appeal, stain resistance, durability, price, and safety concerns. Objectives of the last stage, disposal, included plans to minimize the amount of material sent to landfills by making the product easier to store, improving ease of recycling, and reducing transportation required. These specifications, importance ratings, marginal values, and ideal values are discussed. While investigating more sustainable manufacturing practices, many solutions were found, and the practicality of these solutions was investigated. By incorporating these solutions, the product — Sustain-A-Bear™ — met specifications, embodied sustainability, and also proved cost competitive. Once specification-level analysis was complete, multiple bears were constructed, both to create a baseline for comparison with standard stuffed animal assembly and also to aid in the development of a more sustainable assembly process. Through the use of ultrasonic welding for material bonding to thermally weld materials together and through the use of specialized platens, the bear was assembled from PET fleece (recycled from plastic soda bottles) using significantly less time and energy than that required to sew a bear together. Part reduction and shape simplification also aided bear assembly throughput. Furthermore, tensile testing on an Instron machine yielded results better than those resulting from sewing, owing largely to the reduction of stress concentrations. Finally, overall cost analysis indicates that stuffed animals made in this fashion could, in fact, be affordably made in the United States.

Abstract:
The approach we propose is developed within an integrated cancer research site or Siric CURAMUS (Cancer United Research Associating Medicine, University & Society) linked to the Groupe Hospitalier Pitié Salpêtrière - Sorbonne University. The eight Sirics accredited in France by the Institut du Cancer have the mission of optimizing and accelerating the production of new knowledge and promoting its dissemination and application in the treatment of cancer through integrated and translational multidisciplinary research programs. CURAMUS has three integrated research programs (neuro-oncology, rare immuno-hematological cancers, microsatellite instability cancers) linked to a cross-cutting program in human and social sciences whose objectives are to achieve multidisciplinary assessments, between technical expertise and patient preferences, and issues of ethics, equity, particularly in access to care. This paper aims to analyze the representations of mediation and assistance within the framework of cognitive deficits and/or accompaniment of cancer patients, through communication and mediatization around an animal-shaped technical communicating device: the stuffed seal Paro, an emotional robot for therapeutic assistance. Paro was originally developed in Japan in 2005. According to the french website dedicated to it, « Paro aims to offer health professionals an easy-to-use, high-tech tool to convey the benefits of animal therapy to people with behavioral and communication disorders (Alzheimer's patients and related disorders), or with motor and sensory deficiencies, by improving their well-being and quality of life in a non-medicated setting » .With this case study, the paper aims to explore the following research questions : What are the imaginary and presence of animal mediation in this specific medical context ? Which imaginary and presence of the power of technical mediation devices are conveyed with the use of Paro? What are the representations of communication, within the framework of medical caregiving, peddled by this device and its uses? These issues will be addressed using a composite methodology, combining semi-structured interviews with caregivers already using the seal, clinical staff members of CURAMUS about possibles uses of Paro in the context rare neurological and hematological cancers and semio-communicational analysis (content and discourse analysis) of a specific corpus. This corpus will include the following items : the french Paro website, international and specifically French press review about the Paro device and Web pages dedicated to Paro on French institutional websites about cancer (The Ligue contre le cancer for example). The purpose of this research is to encourage translational perspectives through the analysis of current uses in the French health system and the explorations of possible of use within the Siric CURAMUS clinical teams and hospital facilities.

Abstract:
Recently in 2021the 11th office of the Fine Arts Department, Songkhla has reported their annual excavations in Trang Province that archaeologists have found some set of rice while excavation in process namely,1) Khao Kurum Archaeological Site, Huai Yod District and 2) Napala Archaeological Site, Muang District. The artifacts which were found associated with the rice grains on the habitation layer consisted of potsherds, animal bones, grindstone, beads, etc. The grains of rice are short and brown in colour which is examined as carbonized since the beginning at its first left. The primary examination by archaeologists has classified the rice of Napala Archaeological Site as short grain of probably Orysa sativa (Indica or Aus) rice. AMS Radiocarbon dating by Beta Analytic Testing Laboratory shows the AMS standard results and calibration dating of charred material measured radiocarbon age:1440±30BP. Because of their geographical location, both sites are incredibly located on one side of the hill slope, where they were suitable for habitat and plantation, especially tiny paddy fields and farms with sufficient water supply either small stream or well. The found rice, which now still grows uphill, probably called ‘Khao rai’ needs less water or no marsh. Comparative study of ethnographic “Atong” 1 of 12 sub-tribes of the “Garos” Tibeto-Burman in Meghalaya, India which originated slash-and-burnt socio-groups, have shown an interest in growing rice activity. According to their ritual ceremony for planting of paddy, other grain, and seeds takes place. There are many ritualistic offerings of rice such as (1) flattened rice by asking for permission to cultivate the land from the first harvested paddy in May. (2) After the harvesting in September or October, the 1st ceremony of the agricultural year is a thanksgiving ceremony to mark the end of a period of toil in the fields and harvesting of bumper crops, which is probably the most important festival of the Garos locally called “Maidan syla” meant to celebrate the after-harvested festival or burnt rice festival. Their 2nd ceremony is to revive the monsoon clouds. People throw cooked rice on the floor to symbolize hailstones. Noticing the rice, were probably the assemblage of “Khao San Dam” in many activities of these ceremonies, that is the archaeological evidence found in Khao Kurum and Napala Archaeological Sites. In the Southern part of Thailand, once the crops have already cultivated, people celebrate to welcome their outcrops most probably at the end of September to October and mark their end of plantation before the monsoon come. People prepare 4 main rice desserts put together with other necessity stuffs in the “hmrub” special large containers and donate to the ancestors through Buddhist ceremony. Though archaeological evidence shows that southern peninsular was where the migrants from the west especially India origins, who shared same habitat of hillslope, might brought their different traditions through both land trans-peninsular and sea routes then settled down inner western or eastern coast since prehistoric times. The beliefs in animism might belong to some other western migrants and with having “hmrub” is one of their unique cultural characteristic material and tradition remain. Once they settled down then converged to Buddhism, the ritual ceremony may be changed due to religion, but tradition remains the same today, that is, Bun Duean Sib on the 10th of the lunar month or September-October.

Abstract:
T-2 toxin, a toxic product belongs to the trichothecene mycotoxins, attracts major interest because of its severe detrimental effects on the health of human and farm animals. The occurrence of trichothecenes contamination is global and they are very resistant to physical or chemical detoxification techniques. Trichothecenes are absorbed in the small intestine into the blood stream. The hypothesis of this project was to develop a protecting system using probiotic bacteria that will express trichothecene 3-O-acetyltransferase (Tri101) that convert T-2 to a less toxic intermediate to reduce ingested levels in-situ. The major obstacle that we had faced during the project is the absence of stable and efficient expression vectors in probiotics. Most of the project period was invested to screen and isolate strong promoter to express high amounts of the detoxify enzyme on one hand and to stabilize the expression vector on the other hand. In order to estimate the detoxification capacity of the isolated promoters we had developed two very sensitive bioassays. The first system was based on Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells expressing the green fluorescent protein (GFP). Human liver cells proliferation was used as the second bioassay system.Using both systems we were able to prove actual detoxification on living cells by probiotic bacteria expressing Tri101. The first step was the isolation of already discovered strong promoters from lactic acid bacteria, cloning them downstream the Tri101 gene and transformed vectors to E. coli, a lactic acid bacteria strain Lactococcuslactis MG1363, and a probiotic strain of Lactobacillus casei. All plasmid constructs transformed to L. casei were unstable. The promoter designated lacA found to be the most efficient in reducing T-2 from the growth media of E. coli and L. lactis. A prompter library was generated from L. casei in order to isolate authentic probiotic promoters. Seven promoters were isolated, cloned downstream Tri101, transformed to bacteria and their detoxification capability was compared. One of those prompters, designated P201 showed a relatively high efficiency in detoxification. Sequence analysis of the promoter region of P201 and another promoter, P41, revealed the consensus region recognized by the sigma factor. We further attempted to isolate an inducible, strong promoter by comparing the protein profiles of L. casei grown in the presence of 0.3% bile salt (mimicking intestine conditions). Six spots that were consistently overexpressed in the presence of bile salts were isolated and identified. Their promoter reigns are now under investigation and characterization.
