Abstract:

This article investigates the work of philosopher and experimental psychologist Carl Stumpf with a focus on embedding his scientific perspective in a practice of musicianship. Stumpf wrote in an autobiographical essay from 1924 that he had considered becoming a professional violin player before taking up the study of philosophy. I claim that the practice of learning and playing this instrument sheds light on his concept of music, and at the same time signals its relevance for nineteenth-century musical aesthetics. To carve out the role of Stumpf's musicianship, I propose a “psychoanalytic” approach of tone psychology in the sense of Gaston Bachelard. For this I read through Stumpf's writings to trace the function and role of practices like analyzing tones and tunes, memorizing and notating pitch and melody, and using related tools and techniques like phonography. This is held against a reconstruction of his mentioning of the violin and of the context of violin pedagogy in the mid-nineteenth century. In so doing, I hope eventually to sharpen the notion of tone in Stumpf and thereby to contribute to a better understanding of his concept of complex qualities as opposed to the notion of Gestalt in the generation of his students.

Abstract This article intends to identify what is at stake in Stumpf’s critical assessment of Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology as a “phenomenology without phenomena”. After reconstructing the main arguments through which these two conceptions of phenomenology argue against each other, it is argued that the main issue of this debate concerns the value that is attributed to the idea of intentionality in the definition of the phenomenological program, and consequently in the very definition of the “phenomenon”. Ultimately, the question risen is that of the relationship between phenomenology and philosophy itself, depending on whether phenomenology is conceived as a propedeutic science (Stumpf) or as a fundamental science (Husserl).

Abstract:

Knowledge of the precise water depth in shallow areas of the ocean is of great significance to the safe navigation of ships and hydrographic surveying. Compared with traditional bathymetry, satellite remote sensing for water depth determination makes it possible to cover large areas by dynamic observation. In this paper, we conducted an optically shallow water bathymetric inversion study using a Stumpf empirical model, random forest model, neural network model, and support vector machine model based on Sentinel-2 satellite images and Ganquan Dao measured bathymetry data. We compared and analyzed the inversion results based on the empirical model and different machine learning models. The results show that the Stumpf empirical and machine learning models are capable of inverting optically shallow water depth. Moreover, the machine learning models had better fitting ability than the Stumpf empirical model with a sufficient number of samples, especially when the water depth was greater than 15 m. In addition, the random forest model had the highest overall accuracy among these models, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.41 m and a regression coefficient (R2) of 0.96 for the test data.

El artículo analiza la teoría de todos y partes (mereología) de CarlStumpf. Por un lado, se presentan los elementos básicos de su psicología descriptiva de la experiencia. Por otro lado, se analiza el desarrollo de la teoría de todos y partes sobre la base de dicha psicología descriptiva. El trabajo pretende probar dos tesis complementarias: primero, si bien la teoría mereológica de Stumpf es aún incipiente y no del todo explícita, constituye un auténtico punto de partida. Segundo, dicha mereología surge a partir de una atenta descripción de la experiencia dada y no es algo impuesto a ésta.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Anfang des Jahres 1522 erreichte die Debatte über die Priesterehe die Diözese Merseburg, als die beiden Pfarrer Johann Stumpf und Franz Klotzsch sich zur Heirat entschlossen. Stumpf und Klotzsch verteidigten ihr Handeln in mündlicher und schriftlicher Form vor den bischöflichen und herzoglichen Beamten, während andere Pfarrer sich entschieden gegen die Priesterehe aussprachen. Die durch Aktenmaterial gut belegten Fälle zeigen, wie sich die Reformation außerhalb Wittenbergs durchsetzten konnte. Insbesondere die Korrespondenz zwischen Friedrich dem Weisen und dem Bischof von Merseburg erhellt den reichspolitischen Umgang mit der erstarkenden Reformationsbewegung in den Jahren 1522-24. In der frühen Reformation war die Priesterehe ein in höchstem Maße öffentlicher und umstrittener Akt, der durch zahlreiche Interessen - theologische, rechtliche, gemeindliche und persönliche - bestimmt war.

ZusammenfassungDurch die deutsche Leistenrezidivstudie zeigte sich, dass vor allem technische Fehler bei der Erstoperation mit einem zu lang belassenen Stumpf der V. saphena magna Ursache für nachfolgende Krossenrezidive sind. Daher sollten für eine korrekte Krossektomie gewisse Mindestanforderungen gelten. Dazu zählt vor allem eine bündige Ligatur an der Einmündung der tiefen Vene (sogenannte „flush ligation”). Diese ist an der saphenofemoralen Mündung unbedingt zu fordern und an der saphenopoplitealen Mündung, aufgrund der schwierigeren anatomischen Verhältnisse, anzustreben. Weiteres Merkmal einer „korrekten” Krossektomie ist eine adäquate Versorgung des Stumpfes mittels Invertierungsplastik und Elektrokoagulation des Endothels. Zudem sollte vor allem im Bereich der saphenofemoralen Mündung eine kurzstreckige (0,5–1,0 cm lange) Inspektion der V. femoralis communis sowie ein Verschluss der Fossa ovalis erfolgen.

Abstract:

Stumps left behind after the felling of trees represent an important source of renewable energy that could be used for fuel mixtures as a sustainable solution. The subject of this research was to determine the influence of tree species, stump diameter size, and subsoil on the time required for stump processing. Evaluated parameters included the mean time for one stump’s processing; the stump processing time based on the stump diameter; different soil types and tree species; and the tree species type (coniferous, broadleaved). The research was conducted in the territory of the Czech Republic in 2020/2021. There were 287 stumps and 6 tree species in total. The stumps were uprooted using a new prototype of grubbing head, developed at Mendel University in Brno, attached as an adapter on the boom of a JCB JS 220 LC excavator with a tracked undercarriage and was controlled remotely from an excavator cab. Research results confirmed that the processing time of one stump depends on the stump diameter (GLM), and the time needed for the processing of one stump increased with an increase in stump diameter in all experimental sites. An equation was suggested to predict the time needed to work on one stump.

Abstract:

Frente a la confusión que encontramos en la literatura, debemos distinguir con claridad la sensación y el sentimiento para poder decidir en qué ámbito se inscribe el dolor. El artículo defiende la tesis de Stumpf y Husserl de que el dolor (dolor físico) es fundamentalmente sensación. Pero, ya no en línea con Stumpf, sino con Scheler, se sostiene que además del dolor-sensación, existen sentimientos sensibles, a los que se propone denominar «displacer» (no intencional) y «desagrado» (intencional). Entre los sentimientos de desagrado hay algunos con intencionalidad trascendente, que son los ligados a las sensaciones exhibitivas (vista, oído…). Pero también hay un sentimiento de «desagrado» ligado al dolor-sensación, que tiene una intencionalidad inmanente (y cuya base sentimental es el «displacer»). El desagrado y el displacer ligados al dolor-sensación pueden ser denominados dolorsentimiento, pero han de distinguirse claramente del dolor-sensación.

Abstract This article, inspired by Rudolf Haller’s thesis of an independent, specific, and unitary Austrian tradition of scientific philosophy, develops the idea of a specific Austrian tradition of psychological research, as distinguished in its development from that in Germany. This tradition was shaped by two phenomenological trends, which were merged into unity in Prague by Carl Stumpf and Brentano’s students of the second generation. One trend traces back to Goethe and was continued in Prague by the physiologists Jan E. Purkinje and Ewald Hering, culminating in the work of Ernst Mach. The other trend was initiated by Franz Brentano and spread through his school. Stumpf was the key integrator of these two traditions, which he then partially passed on to his Berlin students and founders of Gestalt psychology. Finally, Karl Bühler’s “reimport” of the Brentanian psychological legacy into the Vienna of the First Republic is briefly illustrated.

Résumé Dans la seconde édition des Logische Untersuchungen, Husserl affirme avoir investigué le premier, dans l’école de Brentano, les objets d’ordre supérieur et les qualités de forme. En effet, on retrouve dans Philosophie der Arithmetik une discussion des moments figuraux et de la fusion qui pourrait donner un certain appui à une telle affirmation. En considérant les concepts de Gestalt et de fusion dans leur contexte historique — particulièrement en relation à Stumpf en ce qui concerne ce dernier concept — nous constatons que Husserl a effectivement une conception plutôt originale et intéressante de ces phénomènes d’ordre supérieur.

Abstract Some Austro-German philosophers considered thoughts to be mind-dependent entities, that is, psychic products. Yet these authors also attributed “objectivity” to thoughts: distinct thinking subjects can have mental acts with “qualitatively” the same content. Moreover, thoughts, once built, can exist beyond the life of their inventor, “embodied” in “documents”. At the beginning of the 20th century, the notion of “psychic product” was at the centre of the debates on psychologism; a hundred years later, it is rather at the margins of the history of philosophy. While Twardowski’s theory of products has been frequently studied, those of Stumpf and the late Husserl have been much less discussed. A presentation of the Austro-German debates about psychic products is all the more important since these discussions might be of direct interest for contemporary philosophy of mind and epistemology. This paper examines the Austro-German notion of psychic products in Stumpf, Twardowski, and the later Husserl.

ZusammenfassungZiel: Überprüfung, ob durch eine bestimmte operative Technik die Rate der Krossenrezidive signifikant gesenkt werden kann. Methode: In eine prospektiv-randomisierte, farbduplex-kontrollierte Studie wurden 1389 Krossen (1054 Patienten) eingeschlossen, davon wurden 631 Patienten (766 Krossen) in den folgenden fünf Jahren nachuntersucht. Die Patienten wurden in drei Gruppen randomisiert. In der Kontrollgruppe (G1) wurden 607 radikale Krossektomien durchgeführt. In der Gruppe G2 wurde in 292 Fällen zusätzlich die Fascia cribrosa übernäht. In der Gruppe G3 (490 Krossen) wurde nach radikaler Krossektomie das Endothel des Stumpfes invertierend übernäht. Ergebnisse: Bei der Nachuntersuchung wurden vier Gruppen unterschieden: regelrechte postoperative Verhältnisse, Krossenrezidiv mit oder ohne klinischer Relevanz, verbliebener Stumpf. In G1 wurden 30/311 (9,6%), in G2 10/176 (5,7%) und in G3 26/279 (9,3%) Neovaskularisationen mit und ohne klinische Relevanz gefunden Schlussfolgerung: Die Studie zeigt, dass die Krossenrezidivrate durch Neoangiogenese nach korrekter Krossektomie durch die Einrichtung einer Barriere über dem Stumpfendothel nicht signifikant gesenkt wird.

Vorspann Staatlich lizenzierte Bordelle gab es in Italien seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Man hatte sich so sehr an die professionellen „Lehrmeisterinnen der Liebe“ gewöhnt, dass die Schließung der Bordelle ein Politikum ersten Ranges wurde. Menschen- und frauenrechtliche Argumente blieben gegen solche tief verwurzelten Gewohnheiten und Mentalitäten lange stumpf. Letztlich, so der Saarbrücker Historiker Malte König, waren es internationale Verpflichtungen, die Italien zum Einlenken veranlassten.

Abstract:

Bathymetry refers to the depth of the seabed relative to the lowest water level. Depth information is essential for various studies of marine resource activities, for managing port facilities and facilities, supporting dredging operations, and predicting the flow of sediment from rivers into the sea. Bathymetric mapping using remote sensing offers a more flexible, efficient,and cost-effective method and covers a largearea. This study aims to determine the ability of Planet Scope imagery to estimate and map bathymetry and to as certain its accuracy using the Stumpf algorithm on the in-situ depth data. PlanetScope level 3B satellite imagery and tide-corrected survey dataare employed; satellite images are useful in high-precision bathymetry extraction.The bathymetric extraction method used the Stumpf algorithm. The research location was Kemujan Island, Karimunjawa Islands, Central Java. The selection of this region wasbased on its water characteristics, which have a reasonably high variation in depth. Based on the results of the data processing, it was found that the PlanetScope image data were able to estimate depths of up to 20 m. In the bathymetric results, the R2 accuracy value was 0.6952, the average RMSE value was 2.85 m,and the overall accuracy rate was 71.68%.
