Abstract:
Freeze-tape casting is a new processing technology that can generate continuous columnar-graded pore structures utilizing a wide variety of ceramic and/or metallic powders. The uni-directional solidification and subsequent freeze drying of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) based aqueous cast tapes is being evaluated for various applications including fuel cells, filtration/separation membranes, and catalyst supports. The degree of pore divergence, pore packing, and pore orientation can be actively tailored by altering the solids loading, freezing rate, and tape pulling speed. The effects of solids loading and freezing rate is discussed with respect to morphology of ice growth. SEM and density data is reported to establish the breadth of tailorability and extent of anisotropy in the frozen tapes. The freeze cast structure of ceramic materials is highly porous. The production of freeze cast, YSZ-based tapes include tap casting techniques and high temperature sintering steps. SEM analysis is displayed at varying angles relative to casting direction to provide further insight of the morphology of these materials. Results of varying solids loading and freezing temperature studies are discussed in detail. Compressive strength data by ASTM standard methods was resultant of concentric ring-on-ring testing and is further explained. Freeze cast structures appear to be potentially desirable over traditional pore formers for various applications.

Abstract:
Surface mean pressures, oil flow visualization, and 3-velocity-component laser-Doppler velocimeter measurements are presented for a turbulent boundary layer of momentum thickness Reynolds number, 7300 and thickness delta over two circular based axisymmetric bumps of height H = delta and 2delta and one rectangular based symmetric bump of H = 2delta. LDV data were obtained at one plane x/H ¥ 3.26 for each case. Complex vortical separations occur on the leeside and merge into large stream-wise mean vortices downstream for the 2 axisymmetric cases. The near-wall flow (y+ < 90) is dominated by the wall. For the axisymmetric cases, the vortices in the outer region produce large turbulence levels near the centerline and appear to have low frequency motions that contribute to turbulent diffusion. For the case with a narrower span-wise shape, there are sharper separation lines and lower turbulence intensities in the vortical downstream flow. Fine-spatial-resolution LDV measurements were also obtained on half of the leeside of an axisymmetric bump (H/delta = 2) in a turbulent boundary layer. Three-dimensional (3-D) separations occur on the leeside with one saddle separation on the centerline that is connected by a separation line to one focus separation on each side of the centerline. Downstream of the saddle point the mean backflow converges to the focal separation points in a thin region confined within about 0.15delta from the local bump surface. The mean backflow zone is supplied by the intermittent large eddies as well as by the near surface flow from the side of the bump. The separated flow has a higher turbulent kinetic energy and shows bimodal histograms in local and U and W, which appear to be due to highly unsteady turbulent motions. By the mode-averaged analysis of bimodal histograms, highly unsteady flow structures are estimated and unsteady 3-D separations seem to be occurring over a wide region on the bump leeside. The process of these separations has very complex dynamics having a large intermittent attached and detached flow region which is varying in time. These bimodal features with highly correlated local u and w fluctuating motions are the major source of large Reynolds stresses local u2, w2 and -uw. Because of the variation of the mean flow angle in the separation zones, the turbulent flow from different directions is non-correlated, resulting in lower shearing stresses. Farther from the wall, large stream-wise vortices form from flow around the sides of the bump.

Abstract:
Nowadays, RNA is extensively acknowledged an important role in the functions of information transfer, structural components, gene regulation and etc. The secondary structure of RNA becomes a key to understand structure-function relationship. Computational prediction of RNA secondary structure does not only provide possible structures, but also elucidates the mechanism of RNA folding. Conventional prediction programs are either derived from evolutionary perspective, or aimed to achieve minimum free energy. In vivo, RNA folds during transcription, which indicates that native RNA structure is a result from both thermodynamics and kinetics. In this thesis, I first reviewed the current leading kinetic folding programs and demonstrate that these programs are not able to predict secondary structure accurately. Upon that, I proposed a new sequential folding program called GTkinetics. Given an RNA sequence, GTkinetics predicts a secondary structure and a series of RNA folding trajectories. It treats the RNA as a growing chain, and adds stable local structures sequentially. It is featured with a Z-score to evaluate stability of local structures, which is able to locate native local structures with high confidence. Since all stable local structures are captured in GTkinetics, it results in some false positives, which prevents the native structure to form as the chain grows. This suggests a refolding model to melt the false positive hairpins, probable intermediate structures, and to fold the RNA into a new structure with reliable long-range helices. By analyzing suboptimal ensemble along the folding pathway, I suggested a refolding mechanism, with which refolding can be evaluated whether or not to take place. Another way to favor local structures over long-distance structures, we introduced a distance penalty function into the free energy calculation. I used a sigmoidal function to compute the energy penalty according to the distance in the primary sequence between two nucleotides of a base pair. For both the training dataset and the test dataset, the distance function improves the prediction to some extent. In order to characterize the differences between local and long-range helices, I carried out analysis of standardized local nucleotide composition and base pair composition according to the two groups. The results show that adenine accumulates on the 5' side of local structure, but not on that of long-range helices. GU base pairs occur significantly more frequent in the local helices than that in the long-range helices. These indicate that the mechanisms to form local and long range helices are different, which is encoded in the sequence itself. Based on all the results, I will draw conclusions and suggest future directions to enhance the current sequential folding program.

Abstract:
The present Master thesis is written in connection with the E4 Stockholm bypass, which is a future motorway linking northern and southern Stockholm, and will mostly run through tunnels. The bypass will cross the Lake Mälaren in the Lambarfjärden area, where a fault is indicated on the geological maps, which would create risks for tunneling. Several geological and geophysical studies and measurements have been carried out in connection with the bypass project. These include surface mapping, drillings (core logging and water-loss measurements) and geophysical measurements (reflection and refraction seismics). The objectives of this thesis are to interpret the available geological and geophysical data, integrate the reports and the results of these studies and finally to create a structural model of the Lambarfjärden area affected by the tunnel. The available data provided a great opportunity to examine the area. The core logging and geophysical measurements supported the existence of the fault indicated on the geological maps. The core logging revealed that this pre-existing deformation zone was reactivated, possibly as dextral strike-slip, and the orientations of the subsurface fractures corresponded well with the Riedel structures occurring in such shear zone. The field work has found evidence for ductile sinistral movement which, together with the results of the core logging, could indicate a conjugate deformation zone in the area. The water-loss measurements showed several intervals along the boreholes where significant water-loss took place. Furthermore, the thesis calls the attention to both opening and closure of differently oriented weaknesses, fractures. As the thesis highlights possible risks for the tunneling, its findings could be very useful during the construction of the bypass.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the impact of the reform of the split share structure on the Chinese capital market. It adopts an event study methodology to examine the share price performance around the announcements of the reform and its predicted determinants, the type and level of consideration by using a sample of the top 300 companies listed in the combined Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) and Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE). I find the three-day cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) to be negative and significant around government announcement of the reform on 29 April 2005, but the three-day CAR around company???s announcement of the reform to be positive and significant. I attribute this change of sentiment by the market to the release of information about the reform process concerning features such as type and level of consideration. I also regress the company???s CAR on the type and level of consideration and find evidence to suggest that type of consideration matters, where investors prefer payment of shares from capital reserves or retained profits, cash, warrants or any combination of these methods as opposed to payment of shares from non-tradable shareholders. However, I observe no relation between level of consideration and CAR. I interpret this reaction to be that investors perceive that the consideration level is fair and reasonable based on the company???s financial and operating conditions. These results imply that the reform of the split share structure exerts a positive impact on a company???s share price and the extent of impact is a function of the type of consideration.

The Southern Ocean is an important “sink” for anthropogenic CO2, but it requires a detailed understanding of the sensitivity of the biological carbon pump to variability in physical forcing mechanisms in order to predict its continuing role. However, due to the remote and tempestuous nature of this region, in situ measurements of phytoplankton variability are scarce. Consequently, satellites, autonomous floats and gliders are increasingly being utilized as platforms for observing biogeochemical variability over broad spatial and temporal scales, through satellite ocean colour radiometry linked to inherent optical properties (IOPs) of the upper water column. In this study, the variability of in situ IOPs was investigated together with phytoplankton biomass, cell size, species composition and chlorophyll to carbon (Chl:C) ratios to isolate and understand the relationships between IOPs and biogeochemistry.

Abstract:
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of dementia, affecting ~5.2 million Americans. Current FDA approved medications provide mainly symptomatic relief and there are no agents available to delay or cure this disease. Multiple factors such as amyloid-β aggregates, dyshomeostasis of biometals, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation have been implicated in the development of AD. Even though significant advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms leading to AD, the exact etiology still remains elusive. Given AD’s multifactorial nature, a multifunctional strategy of small molecule design would help to identify novel chemical templates. Recently our lab has developed hybrid molecules of curcumin and melatonin that exhibited potent neuroprotective ability in various AD models. Further modifications identified a lead compound with potent neuroprotective and antioxidative activity in MC65 cells, while also establishing the hybrid strategy as a viable approach in providing unique chemotypes with novel pharmacology. Further preliminary biological studies suggest that the lead is orally available and exhibits multifunctional properties both in vitro and in vivo on AD pathologies, thus strongly encouraging further structural examination. Herein, we report the structural exploration of this chemical template through structure-activity relationship studies at three domains: the phenyl domain, α,β-unsaturated β-ketone amide domain, and the indole domain. Collectively, the results show that the chemical space around the curcumin portion doesn’t favor electronic or steric/hydrophobic interactions, but might favor pi-pi (π-π) and hydrogen-bond interactions. Additionally, the α,β-unsaturated β-ketone amide domain is not as important as the linearity of the β-ketone acetamide. Moreover, the results indicate that a free rotatable β-OH might be the actual moiety that is important for the observed biological activity through favorable hydrogen bonds. Finally, steric interactions are not favored in the chemical space surrounding the indole nitrogen, suggesting that hydrogen bond interactions are required for the observed neuroprotective activity. Conversely, a hydrogen bond acceptor is necessary at the 5-position of the indole ring and bulky substitutions can be accommodated, with restrictions, suggesting steric tolerance and hydrophobic interactions at this position. These modifications have yielded a series of novel compounds that are capable of modifying AD pathology while shedding further light onto the chemical scaffold thus warranting future investigations into the development, optimization, and characterization of these curcumin/melatonin hybrids as potential treatments for AD.

In particolar modo si analizza lo standard WiFi IEEE 802.11 nelle sue caratteristiche costitutive e funzionali per proporre uno scaling nell‟ambito delle comunicazioni acustiche basate su onde di Lamb. Il lavoro contiene un‟analisi dei parametri fondamentali delle onde elastiche, della loro divisione e del comportamento durante la propagazione, con particolare riguardo all‟ambito del monitoraggio strutturale (SHM), dove vengono utilizzate a scopi di diagnostica. In particolare, lo studio qui presentato mette in luce il loro potenziale utilizzo quale mezzo concorrente per la trasmissione di indicatori di danno, un approccio che può risultare particolarmente vantaggioso in tutti gli scenari in cui la classica propagazione elettromagnetica fallisce (canali sottomarini, ambienti poco luminosi, ecc.). Pertanto, si analizzano le analogie e le differenze fra i due mondi, quello elettromagnetico e quello delle onde meccaniche, per arrivare ad una indagine di possibile scaling del protocollo di comunicazione WiFi in ambito ultrasonico.

Predmet doktorske disertacije je ispitivanje mogućnosti karakterizacija novih biorazgradivih kompozitnih filmova nabazi biljnih proteina. Osnovno istraživanje se bazira naispitivanju mogućnosti dobijanja kompozitnih filmova na baziobnovljivih sirovina, vlažnim postupkom ("casting" metoda),karakterizaciji dobijenih filmova i modifikaciji uslova dobijanjaradi poboljšanja osobina formiranog filma. Istraživanja sezasnivaju na dobijanju filmova na bazi pogače uljane tikvegolice (Cucurbita pepo L. c. v. Olinka) (pumpkin oil cake –PuOC), njenog proteinskog izolata i njihove kombinacije sadrugim filmogenim polimerima (proteinima i polisaharidima).Istraživanje podrazumeva procenu mogućnosti primene PuOCradi delimične zamene opšte poznatih filmogenih materijala,kao i produkciju filmova od PuOC i od proteinskog izolataPuOC. Za produkciju filmova, od važnosti je ispitivanjeprocesnih parametara (temperatura, pH, period denaturacije,uslovi sušenja, itd.) i komponenti koje formiraju film (količinapolimera sa sposobnošću formiranja filma, količina i vrstaplastifikatora, količina i vrsta agenasa za umrežavanje, itd.). Sobzirom na velik broj parametara koji utiču na formiranje filma,kao i na osobine formiranih filmova, ispitano je međusobnodelovanja više faktora na mogućnost produkcije i osobinedobijenog filma. Odabir i optimizacija procesnih parametara i modelovanje produkcije filmova izvedeno je implementiranjemnove kompjuterske i analitičke metodologije. Osobine značajneza dalju primenu dobijenih filmova podrazumevaju mehaničkeosobine (zateznu jačinu i izduženje pri kidanju), barijerne(propustljivost gasova) i fizičko-hemijske karakteristike(rastvorljivost, količinu rastvorljivih proteina, biološkuaktivnost u vidu antioksidantne aktivnosti), a ispitane su u ciljudeklarisanja potencijalne aplikacije filma. Dodatno, ispitana jemogućnost produkcije kompozitnih filmova proteinskiizolat/hitozan, kao i primena enzimskog umrežavanja (crosslinking)enzimom transglutaminaza (TGaza), radi dobijanjafilmova sa unapređenim karakteristikama. Istraživanja suvođena i u smeru karakterizacije strukture nastalih filmova,primenom tehnika elektron skenirajuće mikroskopije,deferencijalne skening kalorimetrije, gasne hromatografije iFurije transformišuće infracrvene spektrofotometrije.
The subject of the doctoral dissertation is to examine the possibility ofproduction and characterization of new biodegradable compositefilms based on plant proteins. The research is based on anexamination of the possibility of obtaining composite films based onrenewable raw materials, using the casting method, on thecharacterization of the obtained films and the requirement for themodification to improve the properties of the formed film. Theresearch is aimed to evaluate the possibility of the productionthe new biodegradable films based on hull-less pumpkin(Cucurbita pepo L. c. v. Olinka) oil cake (pumpkin oil cake -PuOC), its protein isolates and their combinations with otherfilmogenous polymers (proteins and polysaccharides). Thestudy involves partial replacement of commonly well-knownfilmogenous materials with PuOC, and production of filmsbased on the whole PuOC and the protein isolates from PuOC.For film production, it is important to investigate the processparameters (temperature, pH, denaturation period, drying conditions,etc.), film-forming components (the amount of polymer with filmformingability, the amount and type of plasticizer, the amount andtype of cross-linking agents, etc..). As the large number of parametersinfluence the film formation, as well as the properties of formedfilms, the interaction of several factors which affect the possibility ofthe production and properties of the obtained film, was examined.Selection and optimization of process parameters and modeling offilm production will be carried out by implementing a new computerand analytical methodology. Characteristics important for furtherapplication of the obtained films include mechanical properties(tensile strength and elongation at break), barrier (gas permeability)and physical-chemical properties (solubility, the amount of solubleproteins, biological activity in the form of antioxidant activity) andwere tested for the purpose of declaring potential application of the produced films. Additionaly, the possibility of production of composite films protein isolate/chitosan, and the application of enzymatic networks (cross-linking) by the enzymetransglutaminase, in order to obtain films with improvedproperties, was examined. Research was conducted in thedirection of the characterization of films formed by applying thetechniques of scanning electron microscopy, diferentialscanning calorimetry, gas chromatography and Fouriertransforming infrared spectrophotometry.

【Abstract】 As the MEMS technology is getting mature and its applications become diverse, people could miniaturize many products successfully. Heat pipe is one of the most popular components to diffuse heat in notebook computers. Micro heat pipes (MHP) seem to be an important research topic in the future. The purposes of this thesis are making several kinds of wall structures of MHP by the MEMS technology and exploring the feasibility of these wall structures for possibly improving the performance of MHP later on. First, in this experiment we design several straight and network channels as wall structures of MHP. For the straight channels, there are V-type, trapezioid type and U-type. For the network channels, there are four types, namely, array rectangular blocks, staggered rectangular blocks, array type of diamond blocks and staggered diamond blocks. Next, all the wall structures are fabricated by bulk micromachining (1 0 0) - 4 inch silicon wafers. Then the difficulties encountered in fabrication are identified and resolved. Finally the flowrates for various wall structures are tested and abilities for transporting the working fluids are compared. It was found in this study that dry ectching by Inductive Coupling Plasma Etching ( ICP ) yields the most satisfactory result in fabrication. As for the tests of flowrates, the wall structure of staggered diamond blocks performs better than and others. It was shown in this study that the wall structures of MHP can be well fabricated by MEMS technology. Further studies in this field are highly recommended.

The main purpose of this thesis is to develop an automatic design program for the scaffolding structure of towers. Scaffolding is a temporary structure used to support constructing a larger structure. Its strength requires both comprehensive calculation and examination to ensure its strength and safety. In the literature, the past analysis was focused on the loading and safety of the frame-type tube scaffolding structures. There was little analysis specifcally done for the scaffolding of the tower. This document is aimed to conduct the analysis for the scaffolding structure specifically built for the tower structures to improve the scaffolding safety for such construction needs. This document depicts the importance of tube scaffolding used in constructing the petrochemical plants. Case studies of constructing tower equipment are used to analyze the strength of tube scaffolding structures. The analysis is separated into the following areas, including location, purpose of scaffolding, type, key elements, temperature, wind speed, and earthquake magnitude. The MICRO-SAP Version-III program is used to analyze the tube scaffolding structure. The three-dimensional finite element model of the scaffolding is constructed by the program based on the real structure dimension, nodes, three-dimensional beam element, key element loading, and boundary conditions. The analysis of the tube scaffolding structure is conducted via applying the vertical stress, wind speed, and earthquake magnitude. The analytical result is compared with the regulation for selecting proper key elements ensuring the scaffolding structure safety. In this document, the MICRO-SAP Version-III program used in analyzing the scaffolding structure for tower construction was modified. The introduction, application, and reference examples of this program are also depicted in this document.

Angiogenesis plays a fundamental role in many physiological and pathological processes, such as the tissue or organ regeneration, embryonic development, tumor growth and metastastases. Angiostatin, a 38kD protein, is an inhibitor of angiogensis. It is also an internal fragment of plasminogen comprised of the first four triple disulfide-linked kringle structure. Since the first isolation of the angiostatin protein by Dr. Folkman’s group, numerous researches have been conducted on this topic. Many studies have demonstrated that angiostatin containing K1-4 fragment isn’t the most powerful inhibitor of angiogenesis. In endothelial cell migration assay, the reduced kringle 5 domain fragment achieves the highest inhibition; the kringle 1 domain or kringle 1-3 fragment has the lowest activity of inhibition. In endothelial cell proliferation assay, the kringle 5 domain alone demonstrates highest level of inhibition; the kringle 4 domain has lower level of inhibition. It has also been shown that when disulfide bond of plasmin kringle 5 is reduced, the more potent angiostatin can be generated by enzyme catalization. Therefore multiple kringle fragments of angiostatin have different inhibitory effect on the angiogenesis. In this thesis, we want to understand the effect of the different levels of disulfide bridge disruption on the anti-angiogenic activity. We selected three specific cleavage sites in kringle 3, kringle 4 and kringle 5, i.e. k3316, k3328, k3333in kringle 3; k4418, k4430 and k4435 in kringle 4; and, k5524, k5536 and k5541 in kringle 5 to generate various fragments of plasminogen. In addition, we also prepare three fragments with intact kringle, i.e. K3354(wt), K4443(wt)and K5548(wt). Currently, we have successfully expressed twelve different length fragments of angiostatin using the Pichia pastoris expression system and tested their anti-angiogenic activity by Calf Pulmonary Artery Endothelial Cell (CPAE). In endothelial cell migration assay, the plasminogen fragments with reduced disulfide bridge had higher inhibitory effect then that of fragments with intact kringle structure, suggesting that the breakage of disulfide linkage in kringle is the prerequisite for the generation of potent angiostatin. In the proliferation assay, we found that K4418 and K4430 had higher inhibitory activity then other fragments suggesting the potential role of K4. In HPLC analysis, one or two peaks (RT19 and RT22) were identified for each fragment.

This paper studies how to decide default probabilities and default correlations using structural-form approach. We use first passage time model to derive a closed-form formula of joint default probability, and then calculate default correlations. Before deciding default correlations, the asset correlation needs to be determined. We apply an argument supported in capital asset pricing model to discuss the asset correlation. Traditional studies consider firms default at maturity date. However, since firms may default before maturity date, the firm’s asset and its standard deviation need to be estimated under the condition that default may occur before maturity date. We therefore use first passage time model to estimate these parameters.

Abstract:
Complementary DNA (cDNA) to tomato ringspot (TomRSV) nepovirus RNA1 and RNA2 was synthesized and cloned. Overlapping cDNA clones corresponding to over 99% of the TomRSV genome were obtained and used to determine the nucleotide sequence of RNA1and RNA2. The 5' termini of RNA1 and RNA2, which were not present in any cDNA clone analyzed, were determined by using viral RNA as a template in dideoxynucleotide sequencing reactions. TomRSV RNA1 is 8,214 nucleotides (nt) in length, excluding the 3'poly(A) tail, and contains a single long open reading frame (ORF) which accounts for 80%of the nucleotide sequence and has the capacity to encode a polyprotein of 244 kDa. Comparisons between the deduced TomRSV RNA1-encoded polyprotein sequence with those encoded by the RNA1 components of the nepoviruses tomato black ring (TBRV),grapevine chrome mosaic (GCMV) and grapevine fan leaf (GFLV), the B RNA component of the plant comovirus cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), and the genomic RNAs from the plant potyvirus tobacco etch (TEV) and the animal poliovirus, identified a similarly ordered set of conserved amino acid sequence domains in common with these other viruses. The putative functions for the conserved amino acid sequence domains are, in order from the N-terminus, a protease co-factor, NTP-binding domain, VPg, protease, and an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Possible cleavage sites have been identified between each of the conserved domains which would release each of the functional domains from the large polyprotein. TomRSV RNA2 is 7273 nt in length excluding the 3' poly(A) tail and contains a single long ORF, accounting for 78% of the nucleotide sequence, with the capacity to encode a polyprotein of 207 kDa. The TomRSV coat protein gene was localized to the 3' end of the ORF by comparison of the TomRSV coat protein amino acid composition to the amino acid composition of all regions of the deduced RNA2 encoded polyprotein sequence and by comparisons with the amino acid sequences of the TBRV, GCMV and GFLV coat proteins which are encoded by their respective RNA2 components. Sequences potentially involved in viral cell-to-cell movement were also localized on the TomRSV RNA2polyprotein sequence, N-terminal of the putative coat protein sequence that may also include a set of three tandem repeats of 38 to 53 amino acids. Extensive nucleotide sequence similarity accounting for almost 35% of the total TomRSV genomic RNA was observed between the 3' termini and between the 5' termini of TomRSV RNA1 and RNA2.Eighty-eight percent of the 5' terminal 907 nt of TomRSV RNA1 and RNA2 are identical and include both coding and noncoding sequences while the 3' terminal 1533 nt of RNA1and RNA2 are identical and noncoding. It is possible that the similar sequences at both ends of TomRSV RNA1 and RNA2 are a result of recombination between these two genomic RNA components during viral replication. Examination of potential translation initiation sites on TomRSV RNA identified two in-frame AUG triplets at position 78 and441. Expression from both sites were assayed in vitro and in protoplasts which identifiedAUG78 as the site of translation initiation. Full-length cDNA clones corresponding toTomRSV RNA1 and RNA2 were constructed and fused to the bacteriophage T7 RNA promoter. RNA transcripts synthesized from constructs in vitro using 17 RNA polymerase were tested for infectivity by inoculation onto Chenopodiunt amaranticolor and assaying for viral symptoms. Transcripts were found to be noninfectious.

This research is base on the R&D organization of winners in the recent four years of "The Excellent Industry Technology Advancement Award". Apply questionaires and interview 10 chiefs. Its purpose is to understand the above mentioned enterprises which are eminent on the management of the R&D organization and the characteristics of R&D organizational structure, and provid- ing the reference. The conclusion of the study is presented as follows: (1)On the aspect of organization structuring characteristics, most R&D unit level of hierarchy are 2-4. Three highest degrees of formalization are "the annual objectives of unit", "the work- ing plan of unit", and "the description and norm for the outcomes transterence of R&D". three highest degrees of decentralization are anticipating "the schedule plannind", "the setting of goal", and "the choice of the coorperate firms". (2)On the aspect of internal organization structural characteristics, the administra- tive intensity is 12%. The span of control is about 9 persons. About 60% employee are Bachelors and Masters. (3) On the aspect of external organization structural characteristics, about 90% of the R&D chiefs are at the first level of management,and providing the higher degree of spatial seperation than operation procedure and working time.(4)The factors which will affect characteristics of R&D organizational structure including "the bosiness growth", "the goals and strategies", the industry environment" and so on. In this study, series of TbMn2O5 nanorods was synthesized by hydrothermal method. Different sizes and the aspect ratio of nanorods were growth with different annealing temperatures. The bulk sample was prepared by conventional solid-state reaction for comparison. As ξc = 216nm ,the X-ray diffraction shows that 26 K of the Mn-O bond length has an unusual mutation. For ξc = 216 nm sample, both temperature dependant experiments of x-ray diffraction and dielectric constant measurement revealed similar transition region in between 18 k and 26 K. No such behavior was found as ξc reduced to 64 nm. It is an evident that the magnetoelectric coupling disappeared due to the size effect as ξc is in between 216 and 64 nm.

In this study, hydrothermal method was employed to synthesis the GdMn2O5 nanorods. Different rod sizes were growth by annealing procedure in different temperature. X-ray and electrical measurements system were used to characterize characteristic the crystal structure, dielectric constant of these obtained samples. The x-ray diffraction results show an unusual variation of Mn-O bond at 26 K in 80 nm sample. On the other hand, variable-temperature high-frequency dielectric measurement system and x-ray diffraction have the same result, This implies that the Magnetoelectric coupling is controlled by the size effect. And the critical size of GdMn2O5 nanorods is in between 80 and 60 nm along c axis.

Few research studies have examined female sexual offending. Furthermore, most of what we know about sexual offending is based on male perpetrators. Our conceptions of female criminals who act outside their designated sexual scripts are formed by prevailing stereotypes of femininity. This research expands the available literature in the field of sexual offending, while examining how women are constituted when it comes to female child sexual offending. I conduct a critical discourse analysis of court transcripts and electronic news articles of cases involving women as child sexual perpetrators. Three criminal cases are examined from Wisconsin, U.S. The goal is to examine whether, and through what processes, traditional sexual scripts are discursively reproduced in court proceedings and media reporting of female sexual offending. Two cases reveal that women who adhere to their expected sexual scripts despite having committed a sexual offense receive sympathetic responses from legal officials and news journalists. The legal and media responses also ensure these women are able to continue their expected roles as women during and following sentencing. On the other hand, one case reveals that women who overtly contravene their expected gender scripts are legally and morally condemned. The call for strict punishment centred upon removing the female offender’s ability to participate in motherhood, because of the offender’s contravention of expected gender scripts by sexually offending against her own children. Furthermore, the male co-offender in this latter case was not deemed to have contravened his sexual scripts, resulting in less social condemnation. Overall, this thesis demonstrates discursive maneuvering that occurs in female sexual offender cases, in which legal officials and news journalists justify offenses based on prevailing notions of femininity.

This essay is a study on the commerical gathering of growing, changing and space structure in the Rear District of Taipei Station. In the course, investigation and interview are made to study the characterization of activity. The content includes three parts: characteristic of major user''s activities, commerical space structure, and impact from changing of substantical space. Suggestions of the development are raised according to these issues. The reaserch reaches to three conclusions: 1.Commerical space structure is the products of politics and economy. Through these various factors, the Rear District develops a gathering of wholesale, transportation and resident. Each system has its order of spacial scatter, thus form various ecological relations. 2.To the commerical space structure of wholesale, differient assorts have their own service domain and space structure. 3.The change of substantial space prometes the accessibility and convience, and also limits the development of the district. Degrees are different according to the characterization, posi tion and history of spicific parts. Thus concludes, the change of substantial space is one of effective factors,in the change of comnerical space structure of the Rear District.

Abstract This research attempts to analyze the “Action Plan for Biotechnology Industry,” Taiwan’s primary policy guidance on biotechnology development, with a structure-strategy approach. The vertical axis of technology-industry is further crossed with a horizontal axis, which consists of structure and strategy, and results in four different dimensions in examining the policy making on biotechnology industry development. The first dimension concentrates on the discussion of “technology- structure,” and their comparison, representing generally the evolvement of technology and its trends. The second dimension addresses on the description and analysis of “technology-strategy,” elaborating current measures that encourage technology development. The third dimension focuses on the combination of “strategy-industry,” and their presentation of related issues. It analyzes biotechnology industry’s potential domain reshuffle under the influence of governmental intervention and industrial competition. The fourth dimension emphasizes the development of “structure-industry,” and their mutual connection. It illuminates the multiple divisions of work and participation in biotechnology industry. Together, the four dimensions inspect the actual interrelation between the practice of “Action Plan for Biotechnology Industry” and biotechnology industry, and manage to give suggestions about the policy of biotechnology development. In addition to systematic review of documents, reports, periodicals, and journals, a purposive sampling questionnaire is designed as a supplement to the analysis. The questionnaire aims solely at the senior management of biotechnology corporations that have applied for government R&D funding over the past two years. Forty questions are sent and twenty-two replies are received. The response rate is 55% . The conclusions also base on two dimensions─“structure” and “strategy.” And the suggestions for the future research are proposed. There are seven major findings for the structural dimension: 1. There is insufficient industry presentation in policy making of biotechnology development. 2. The related research institutions are facing orientation matter and the resources are usually overlapped. 3. The link between R&D system and industry is weak, and remains to be strengthened. 4. The demarcation of biotechnology industry needs to be thoroughly communicated among the governmental organizations. 5. There lacks effective interactions between official and unofficial organizations. 6. Industrial strategic alliance will become a trend. 7. More aggressive actions need to be done to cultivate talented people in biotechnology,. In the dimension of strategy, there are five major findings: 1. The resources for research and development are overly dispersed. 2. The policy of biotechnology development should be consistent with continuity. 3. There is gap between government performance and industry’s expectations. 4. Political concern is more than professional in deciding biotechnology park policy. 5. The result of Executive Yuan Development Fund’s investment in biotechnology industry is far from expectation. Suggestions to future research are as followings: 1. To explore the relationships between different research institutions and biotechnology industry development. 2. To evaluate the policy of establishing biotechnology park and its operation. 3. How to solve the shortage of talent cultivating and exchanging mechanism in biotechnology research and management. 4. To explore the phenomena of cooperation and alliance in biotechnology/ pharmaceutical industry. 5. To focus on the relationship of intellectual property and biotechnology industry business operation. 6. To examine the government efficiency to the expectation of biotechnology industry. 7. To develop possible connections between nonofficial organizations’ promotion and biotechnology industry development.
