Abstract:
We discuss the possibility of generalizing the Sturm comparison and oscillation theorems to the case of singular quantum trees, that is, to Sturm-Liouville differential expressions with singular coefficients acting on metric trees and subject to some boundary and interface conditions. As there may exist non-trivial solutions of differential equations on metric trees that vanish identically on some edges, the classical Sturm theory cannot hold globally for quantum trees. However, we show that the comparison theorem holds under minimal assumptions and that the oscillation theorem holds generical

Abstract The celebrated Sturm-Picone comparison theorem as well as the well known Leighton’s variational lemma and Leighton’s theorem, all of which are the fundamental tools of comparison and so, oscillation theory, are obtained for regular and singular nonlinear impulsive differential equations and related previous results in the literature are generalized to such equations.

AbstractClassical Sturm non-oscillation and comparison theorems as well as the Sturm theorem on zeros for solutions of second order differential equations have a natural symplectic version, since they describe the rotation of a line in the phase plane of the equation. In the higher dimensional symplectic version of these theorems, lines are replaced by Lagrangian subspaces and intersections with a given line are replaced by non-transversality instants with a distinguished Lagrangian subspace. Thus the symplectic Sturm theorems describe some properties of the Maslov index. Starting from the cel

A well-known Picone identity is extended and generalized to second-order dynamic matrix equations on arbitrary time scales. A comparison theorem is obtained in the spirit of the classical Sturm-Picone comparison theorem that extends known scalar results to matrix equations that include the linear homogeneous and inhomogeneous cases, and nonlinear unperturbed and perturbed cases.

Abstract:
In this paper we consider the question of uniqueness of positive solutions for Dirichlet problems of the form - Δ u(x)= g(λ,u(x)) in B, u(x) = 0 on ϑB, where A is the Laplace operator, B is the unit ball in RˆN, and A>0. We show that if g(λ,u)=uˆ(N+2)/(N-2) + λ, that is g has "critical growth", then large positive solutions are unique. We also prove uniqueness of large solutions when g(λ,u)=A f(u) with f(0) < 0, f "superlinear" and monotone. We use a number of methods from nonlinear functional analysis such as variational identities, Sturm comparison theorems and methods of order. We also p

In this thesis, we investigate Sturmian comparison theory and oscillation for second order impulsive differential equations with fixed moments of impulse actions. It is shown that impulse actions may greatly alter the oscillation behavior of solutions. In chapter two, besides Sturmian type comparison results, we give Leightonian type comparison theorems and obtain Wirtinger type inequalities for linear, half-linear and non-selfadjoint equations. We present analogous results for forced super linear and super half-linear equations with damping. In chapter three, we derive suf

Numerical techniques are extensively used to predict vessel motions and associated contact forces for offshore operations such as lift and floatover deck installations. The accuracy of such predictions however is highly dependent on the comprehensive modelling of seastate conditions, which is often limited by computational power and time constraints. A time-efficient methodology, suitable for modelling large numbers of installation seastates, is developed to alleviate this problem. The methodology is based on the Constrained NewWave model which has been previously used to overcome similar prob

Historical methods are typically used to determine the 100-year seastates used in traditional design practice. In these methods, one fits a probability distribution to the historical record of Hs and wind speed. With the development of more rational design standards, interest has shifted to rare events-with annual exceedence probabilities of 10−4 or lower. If one uses historical methods to determine the seastates associated with these probabilities, one typically encounters high uncertainties as a result of limited sample size and modeling uncertainty associated with the choice of distribution

FDPSO is a multifunction floating platform, capable of drilling, production, storage and offloading. Sheltered Riser Vessel (SRV) serves as an independent buoyant hull to provide riser tensions, which is situated in the moon pool of FDPSO. Due to the shielding effect of moon pool, the motion of SRV is very small, so as to meet the requirement of drilling. In order to validate the basic FDPSO and SRV concepts, a model test was conducted in the basin of Ocean Engineering in the State Key Lab of Ocean Engineering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Polyester mooring lines have been used in the offshore industry since the late ’90s. With increasing oil exploration and production in deeper waters, using polyester lines provides greater benefit than using traditional steel wires and chains. Some advantages of using polyester include a reduction of mooring line weight, a reduction in vessel offset and a reduction in the dynamics of the line tensions. However, unlike steel, polyester lines exhibit axial stiffness characteristics that are nonlinear and vary with time and loading history. Tahar (2001) developed a comprehensive theory and numeri
