Abstract:
The Journal discusses the behavior of a single-span composite string structure, when the string and the supporting rope are absolutely flexible elements. The behavior of such a structure with symmetric and asymmetric loads is analyzed. The influence of the string on the elastic and kinematic displacements is considered. Changing the ratio between the axial stiffness of the strings and auxiliary rope and the initial rotation of the auxiliary rope, the structure of the elastic and kinematic shifts is analyzed, the most rational variants are sought and the recommendations for composing are presented. Santrauka Straipsnyje aptariama vieno tarpatramio kombinuotos styginės konstrukcijos elgsena, kai styga ir pagalbinis lynas absoliučiai lankstūs elementai. Analizuojama tokios konstrukcijos elgsena veikiant simetrinei ir asimetrinei apkrovoms. Nagrinėjama stygos įtaka tampriesiems ir kinematiniams poslinkiams. Keičiant stygos ir pagalbinio lyno ašinių standžių santykį ir pagalbinio lyno pradinį įsvyrį, analizuojami konstrukcijos tamprieji ir kinematiniai poslinkiai, ieškomi racionaliausi variantai ir pateikiamos komponavimo rekomendacijos.

AbstractCladonia arbuscula subsp. squarrosa (Wallr.) Ruoss and C. stygia (Fr.) Ruoss are reported for the first time from the Southern Hemisphere. Populations of C. arbuscula in New Zealand and Australia are recognized as subsp. stictica Ruoss, subsp. nov., usually containing stictic acid, norstictic acid (first report in subg. Cladina), and sometimes also the fumarprotocetraric acid complex. C. laevigata (Vainio) Gyelnik is reinstated in Cladonia subg. Cladina sect. Tenues, while C. stygia is considered to belong to sect. Crustaceae rather than to sect. Tenues. C. confusa R. Sant. is morphologically highly variable, although chemically uniform, usually containing usnic acid and perlatolic acid. An usnic acid-deficient chemodeme is reported as new to New Zealand.

Abstract:
The nineteenth century in the West was a period of intellectual and artistic fascination with the East, both distant and near: Asian and Eastern European. One of the regions that attracted the interest of Western Europeans was Styria, situated on the border separating Austria from Hungary and the Balkans, that is, the West from the East. Borderland cultural phenomena stimulate the imagination as much as exotic phenomena. Both disturb with their hybrid character, which results from the mixing of elements from familiar and alien cultures. With their duality and ambiguity, borderlands are the source of the uncanny, which in the Western literature of the nineteenth century became the basic ingredient of the Western image of the Styrian lands. Uncanny Styria was discovered by Basil Hall, a Scottish traveler who reported the impressions of his stay in this region in his 1830s travelogue Schloss Hainfeld; or, a Winter in Lower Styria. In the second half of the century, two Irishmen wrote about the uncanny Styrian borderland: Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and Bram Stoker. Both associated Styria with vampirism: the former in the 1870s novella Carmilla, the latter in the 1890s short story Dracula’s Guest. The central thread that runs through all three texts is the decline of Styrian nobility. From Hall, it prompts expression of melancholy regret, accompanied by a sense of strangeness. In his work, the erosion of the culture of the nobility results from Styria’s isolated location in the borderlands, as well as the destructive influences of modernity. Le Fanu balances the regret with horror, related to a different interpretation of decline as cultural regression. In Stoker’s story, the terror intensifies with the sense that the regression that affects the province of Styria could extend to Western Europe.

Abstract:
Detailed morphological study was conducted on the third-instar larvae of seven common carrion-breeding species of blowflies of the genus Calliphora Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera : Calliphoridae) found in South Australia. The larval morphology of five species is revised: C. stygia (Fabricius),C. dubia (Macquart), C. augur (Fabricius), C. hilli hilli Patton and C. vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, while that of C. albifrontalis Malloch and C. maritima Norris is described for the first time. Examination of features neglected in descriptions by previous workers, particularly cuticular spinulation, has provided characters that make it possible to identify all species. An illustrated key is provided. Overall, substantial morphological distinctness exists only at the species-group level. Morphological differences at this level largely support species-group and subgeneric arrangements previously proposed for these taxa, as well as the separate status of C. vicina. However, the sister species within the C. stygia- and augur-groups are very difficult to separate, confirming the need for molecular identification in certain cases.

Drawing on links between the theatrical rehearsal and production process and John Biggs’ 3P learning model the author argues in support of performative approaches to L2 study. Suggesting that Shakespeare’s dramaturgy provides uniquely rich and varied pedagogical resources for the L2 learner, the paper presents a case for the use of theatrical performance by students as an element of ESL study.

Abstract:
Nature provides an oracle, often when and where we do not seek one. Childhood encounters with animals, as with people, can be formative. Loren Eiseley’s encounters may have been set him on the path of the vagrant. Such seekers may be drawn to places and things others shun (like caves, or spiders). This act of exploring beneath the surface of things is rarely completed or satisfying. Rather, like an oracle that speaks in half-audible whispers, much is left for the seeking mind to fill in. The scientist may feel their quest is more rational in execution than the mythic wanderer, but the world of the mind can allow for shape-shifting realities wherein both quests become one. This fearless willingness to listen to the oracle, and go wherever it leads, is both exemplary of good science and the human quest. I consider here what could have been the formative experiences that compelled Loren Eiseley, as a watcher of things, to look beneath familiar surfaces. (WRB)

Abstract:

Abstract:

Sterols, volatiles and lipids were isolated and identified from lipophylic extracts from two tunicates, Styela sp. and Phallusia sp., occurring in the Eastern Mediterranean. Seventeen sterols were identified. The sterol composition of the two organisms appeared to be similar except for the concentrations of 5α-stanols. Both tunicates were characterized by the presence of sterols with a (22Z)-double bond. In the volatiles significant amounts of chlorinated compounds were found (phenols in Styela sp. and hydrocarbons in Phallusia sp.). The fatty acid composition of triacylglycerols and phospholipids of the two tunicates showed significant differences.

Abstract:
In the absence of a bluetongue (BT) revaccination plan in 2010, the cattle population from the region of Styria will become again susceptible to bluetongue virus (BTV) after the end of the immunity conferred by the BTV serotype 8 inactivated vaccine that was used in the 2009 emergency vaccination campaign. Even though no BT outbreaks were recorded in Styria, the region extended area has been considered as a high risk zone for BT occurrence during the summer season months. It is therefore essential to investigate the probability of virus establishment and spread in case the cattle population becomes susceptible again. The basic reproduction number (R0) provides an index of transmission intensity and establishes threshold criteria. It is a powerful tool that can be used in the risk assessment of disease invasion, and is defined as the average number of secondary infections derived from the introduction of a single infected individual in a susceptible population. If R0 is higher than 1, the infection is able to invade a host population. An equation used by other authors in 2008 helped to develop a BTV transmission model for domestic cattle of Styria, by computing R0 monthly values for BT infection between April 2008 and February 2009. The input parameters of the deterministic model were based on available scientific data, and field entomological and climate data from the region of Styria. Results indicated that the risk of occurrence of secondary infections in the summer months was not negligible, with an R0 maximum estimate of 2.66.

La Restinga National park was surveyed and we found 29 species belonging to 19 genera and 10 families. The most abundant colonial species were Clavelina oblonga, Aplidium accarense, Polyclinum constellatum, Distaplia bermudensis, Symplegma rubra, S. brakenhielmi, Botrylloides nigrum and Ecteinascidia turbinata. Among the solitary ascidians Phallusia nigra, Ascidia curvata, Microcosmus exasperatus, Styela canopus, Styela sp.1 and Styela sp. 2 were the most abundant. The ascidian diversity in this lagoon is one of the highest for similar habitats in the Caribbean and seven species are new registers for Venezuela (Ascidia curvata, Ecteinascidia styeloides, Aplidium accarense, Distaplia stylifera, Trididemnum orbiculatum, Symplegma rubra, and S. brakenhielmi). One point of concern for the conservation of la Restinga National Park is the presence of possible introduced species, and some management procedures are suggested.

Abstract:
The aim of this review study was to analyse large paleo-botanical datasets derived from investigations of 35 archaeological sites and published during a longer time period. The presence of 18 selected crop taxa has been monitored in the region of Styria. Our results indicate that in the Copper Age, the cultivation and usage of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum) and the einkorn wheat (Triticum monococcum) was present. From the Bronze Age period, the most commonly grown taxa are barley (Hordeum vulgare), proso millet, emmer wheat (Triticum dicoccum) and spelt wheat (Triticum spelta). In the Iron Age, some new crops emerged along with the already common foxtail millet (Setaria italica) and common flax (Linum usitatissimum), a species first found in Styria during this exact period. The importance of Roman period for Styria lies in the introduction of new taxa like the Persian walnut (Juglans regia), of which remnants were also found in the studied area. The late Antiquity and Middle Ages are a wide time frame where all important cereal taxa were already known from previous periods and were also grown in the studied area, with the exception of oat (Avena sativa) and durum wheat (Triticum durum), of which remnants were absent from this period.
