Full textThis thesis aims to understand the diffusion of contemporary spirituality as part of a series of transformations in everyday life within Argentinian middle classes. One of its principal objectives is to study New Age spirituality in Argentinian middle classes as part of a lifestyle. This involves the analysis of the ways in which spiritual worldviews and practices are articulated with the practices of other dimensions of everyday life, such as education, health, places of residence and economic life. This problem has been part of the bigger process of diffusion of this type of religiosity through different public spaces during the last decades. In a more concrete level, this thesis has the purpose of showing the influence of sociability networks and spiritual socializing spaces in the diffusion of new worldviews and certain valorative orientations that impact the way in which social actors carry out their everyday practices. In an even more empirical level, this thesis aims to contribute to the comprehension of the processes of mutual influence between religiosity, understood as a cultural phenomenon, and space configurations. The accomplishment of these objectives will involve the analysis of the case of a series of social actors that have moved to a neighbourhood in the periphery of Northern Buenos Aires’ since 1990 and are involved with spiritual practices and spaces. The data was built by means of a qualitative research strategy fundamentally based on ethnographical fieldwork

Full textThis thesis is primarly concerned with life-styles and values. Its aims are to compare their respective influence upon consumption. It equally incorporates the effect of a mediating variable, involvement. After dealing with the historical evolution of these three concepts in the behavioral sciences, along with their main utilizations in marketing, this work relies on global consumer behavior models to build up a conceptual model incorporating these three concepts and studying their influence upon consumption. From this model, arise eight main hypotheses and fifteen secondary ones. All data needed for this research have been collected, through a french panel society secodip, on 1500 persons of which frequencies consumption for oil and fine wines were also available. A methodological review of second generation multivariate analysis shows that among structural equation models, both pls and lisrel can be used for this study in a complementary way. Results show that seven of the eight hypothesies are confirmed. They also put the stress on the mediating role of involvement. Finally, they indicate the interest of a conjoint approach using both values and involvement due to their non negligible predictive power over consumption. On the other and, life-styles (the cca's ones) dont seem to be usefull due to their nearly lack of influence upon consumtion patterns

Through the association of work and domestic life they form a kind of social organization turned towards «living together » and « working the common ». Using the theoretical framework of common resistance as a basis, this thesis demonstrates that intentional communities put into practice a peculiar manner of being-in-the-world. By way of a return to the land and of a detour via nature, their action is inscribed in a temporality and a spatiality fueled by utopian projection, which draws on representations of a mythologized past. That past serves the present-time actualisation of this world, and the experimentation of a world-to-be-brought-about. These communities develop visions and ways of doing guided by what I suggest we call utopian retrospection. In doing so, they invest intersitial and oppositional public spaces by juxtaposing imaginaries and practices that correlate three social logics (myth, return, utopia) with three registers of historicity (conservation, retrospection, progression). They organise the slowing down of the techno-bureaucratic and capitalistic machine and summon the agrarian roots of earlier societies to prefigure the advent of a new society, both agrarian and political

Full textBased on a double survey, both quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (interviews, observations), this thesis focuses on life-styles and connection to the culture of academics, as well as on their profession, their vocation to become academics and their choice of research topics. University is a legitimate instance of cultural legitimization, endowed with a dual and contradictory mission of preserving and updating knowledge and cultural norms. Studying life-styles and profession of academics is then to study the fabrication and possible transformation of these cultural legitimacy norms. The first part of the project therefore focuses on the study of the lifestyles and cultural relationships of academics, from the perspective of differences within the group. This first part relies in particular on the performance of a multiple correspondence analysis, which permit to identify three major lifestyles. These life-styles are then related to academic variables (such as discipline), to account for the struggles about the type of culture that University must transmit. The second part focuses more particularly on academic vocations, the choice of engagement in an academic career and research objects, as well as the relationship to teaching and the transmission of academics. This second part provides a link between non-university practices and academic work, capturing elements of the dynamics of the academic field and the constant renewal of scholarly culture. Ascetic aristocratism and the consumption of classical and heritage cultural works continue to appear dominant in the university field. But new life-styles, closer to a form of hedonism, made of a more distant relationship to the classical humanities and carried by new disciplines, compete with the classical disciplines and their culture, thus working to redefine the bounds of legitimate culture

Full textLife style research has been unconditionally accepted by marketing experts, but rather ignored by the academics. At the first beginning, it enjoyed social and commercial success. Its efficiency is questioned today. The state of the art is set out here by : - an historical approach about direct and undirect origins of life style research, - a study of main concepts on line and their problematics, - a lay-out of methods and (available) results, - an inventory of technical and methodological fails of these approaches

Full textThe objective of this doctoral dissertation is to bring together the different ideas of “style,” as employed in linguistics and sociology. Its intention is to shed light on the role that the linguist can play in understanding social phenomena. To do so, my interview-based investigation constitutes a large and various study, making possible an analysis of diverse social and discursive styles. To this effect, I’ve employed the concept of “style,” originally confined to writing, but which currently has an extensive use. I distinguish two recurrent meanings, the aesthetic and pragmatic, from which I propose my own definition applicable to oral language productions. The sociological concept of “life style” constitutes a central element of this work. This concept defines life style as based on the free choice of individuals. I interrogate the relationship between direct discourse and style envisioned from a sociological point of view (a “vector” of style) or a linguistic perspective (a stylistic process). Moreover, I analyze “preformed” or “prefabricated” language structures whose use is deployed as a direct discourse from a stylistic process, for it is the speaker who can freely choose this mode of expression. This dissertation thus argues for a better understanding of language phenomena through sociology, in particular thatof life styles. The linguist contributes also to human understanding while being a speaker and social actor
