Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
According to their rhetorical figures and shifters: these types are "stylistic devices". Every stylistic device refers to a reader, i. E. A consumer: every stylistic device enables to identify the target of the ads. Every consumer is characterized by a particular behavior, i. E. His life style; he is characterized by a stylistic device too. Now we can define with precision the encoding of an ad according to ots target

This thesis aims to understand the diffusion of contemporary spirituality as part of a series of transformations in everyday life within Argentinian middle classes. One of its principal objectives is to study New Age spirituality in Argentinian middle classes as part of a lifestyle. This involves the analysis of the ways in which spiritual worldviews and practices are articulated with the practices of other dimensions of everyday life, such as education, health, places of residence and economic life. This problem has been part of the bigger process of diffusion of this type of religiosity through different public spaces during the last decades. In a more concrete level, this thesis has the purpose of showing the influence of sociability networks and spiritual socializing spaces in the diffusion of new worldviews and certain valorative orientations that impact the way in which social actors carry out their everyday practices. In an even more empirical level, this thesis aims to contribute to the comprehension of the processes of mutual influence between religiosity, understood as a cultural phenomenon, and space configurations. The accomplishment of these objectives will involve the analysis of the case of a series of social actors that have moved to a neighbourhood in the periphery of Northern Buenos Aires’ since 1990 and are involved with spiritual practices and spaces. The data was built by means of a qualitative research strategy fundamentally based on ethnographical fieldwork

Abstract:
This thesis is primarly concerned with life-styles and values. Its aims are to compare their respective influence upon consumption. It equally incorporates the effect of a mediating variable, involvement. After dealing with the historical evolution of these three concepts in the behavioral sciences, along with their main utilizations in marketing, this work relies on global consumer behavior models to build up a conceptual model incorporating these three concepts and studying their influence upon consumption. From this model, arise eight main hypotheses and fifteen secondary ones. All data needed for this research have been collected, through a french panel society secodip, on 1500 persons of which frequencies consumption for oil and fine wines were also available. A methodological review of second generation multivariate analysis shows that among structural equation models, both pls and lisrel can be used for this study in a complementary way. Results show that seven of the eight hypothesies are confirmed. They also put the stress on the mediating role of involvement. Finally, they indicate the interest of a conjoint approach using both values and involvement due to their non negligible predictive power over consumption. On the other and, life-styles (the cca's ones) dont seem to be usefull due to their nearly lack of influence upon consumtion patterns

Abstract:
Recipients of the 1970’s legacy, intentional communities aim at reconsidering the practices and social relations specific to contemporary society. Through the association of work and domestic life they form a kind of social organization turned towards «living together » and « working the common ». Using the theoretical framework of common resistance as a basis, this thesis demonstrates that intentional communities put into practice a peculiar manner of being-in-the-world. By way of a return to the land and of a detour via nature, their action is inscribed in a temporality and a spatiality fueled by utopian projection, which draws on representations of a mythologized past. That past serves the present-time actualisation of this world, and the experimentation of a world-to-be-brought-about. These communities develop visions and ways of doing guided by what I suggest we call utopian retrospection. In doing so, they invest intersitial and oppositional public spaces by juxtaposing imaginaries and practices that correlate three social logics (myth, return, utopia) with three registers of historicity (conservation, retrospection, progression). They organise the slowing down of the techno-bureaucratic and capitalistic machine and summon the agrarian roots of earlier societies to prefigure the advent of a new society, both agrarian and political

Full text
Abstract:
Based on a double survey, both quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (interviews, observations), this thesis focuses on life-styles and connection to the culture of academics, as well as on their profession, their vocation to become academics and their choice of research topics. University is a legitimate instance of cultural legitimization, endowed with a dual and contradictory mission of preserving and updating knowledge and cultural norms. Studying life-styles and profession of academics is then to study the fabrication and possible transformation of these cultural legitimacy norms. The first part of the project therefore focuses on the study of the lifestyles and cultural relationships of academics, from the perspective of differences within the group. This first part relies in particular on the performance of a multiple correspondence analysis, which permit to identify three major lifestyles. These life-styles are then related to academic variables (such as discipline), to account for the struggles about the type of culture that University must transmit. The second part focuses more particularly on academic vocations, the choice of engagement in an academic career and research objects, as well as the relationship to teaching and the transmission of academics. This second part provides a link between non-university practices and academic work, capturing elements of the dynamics of the academic field and the constant renewal of scholarly culture. Ascetic aristocratism and the consumption of classical and heritage cultural works continue to appear dominant in the university field. But new life-styles, closer to a form of hedonism, made of a more distant relationship to the classical humanities and carried by new disciplines, compete with the classical disciplines and their culture, thus working to redefine the bounds of legitimate culture

Abstract:
Life style research has been unconditionally accepted by marketing experts, but rather ignored by the academics. At the first beginning, it enjoyed social and commercial success. Its efficiency is questioned today. The state of the art is set out here by : - an historical approach about direct and undirect origins of life style research, - a study of main concepts on line and their problematics, - a lay-out of methods and (available) results, - an inventory of technical and methodological fails of these approaches

Abstract:
The objective of this doctoral dissertation is to bring together the different ideas of “style,” as employed in linguistics and sociology. Its intention is to shed light on the role that the linguist can play in understanding social phenomena. To do so, my interview-based investigation constitutes a large and various study, making possible an analysis of diverse social and discursive styles. To this effect, I’ve employed the concept of “style,” originally confined to writing, but which currently has an extensive use. I distinguish two recurrent meanings, the aesthetic and pragmatic, from which I propose my own definition applicable to oral language productions. The sociological concept of “life style” constitutes a central element of this work. This concept defines life style as based on the free choice of individuals. I interrogate the relationship between direct discourse and style envisioned from a sociological point of view (a “vector” of style) or a linguistic perspective (a stylistic process). Moreover, I analyze “preformed” or “prefabricated” language structures whose use is deployed as a direct discourse from a stylistic process, for it is the speaker who can freely choose this mode of expression. This dissertation thus argues for a better understanding of language phenomena through sociology, in particular thatof life styles. The linguist contributes also to human understanding while being a speaker and social actor

Abstract:
Text style transfer pursues altering the style of a sentence while remaining its main content unchanged. Due to the lack of parallel corpora, most recent work focuses on unsupervised methods and has achieved noticeable progress. Nonetheless, the intractability of completely disentangling content from style for text leads to a contradiction of content preservation and style transfer accuracy. To address this problem, we propose a style instance supported method, StyIns. Instead of representing styles with embeddings or latent variables learned from single sentences, our model leverages the generative flow technique to extract underlying stylistic properties from multiple instances of each style, which form a more discriminative and expressive latent style space. By combining such a space with the attention-based structure, our model can better maintain the content and simultaneously achieve high transfer accuracy. Furthermore, the proposed method can be flexibly extended to semi-supervised learning so as to utilize available limited paired data. Experiments on three transfer tasks, sentiment modification, formality rephrasing, and poeticness generation, show that StyIns obtains a better balance between content and style, outperforming several recent baselines.

Abstract:
Automatically writing stylized characters is an attractive yet challenging task, especially for Chinese characters with complex shapes and structures. Most current methods are restricted to generate stylized characters already present in the training set, but required to retrain the model when generating characters of new styles. In this paper, we develop a novel framework of Style-Aware Variational Auto-Encoder (SA-VAE), which disentangles the content-relevant and style-relevant components of a Chinese character feature with a novel intercross pair-wise optimization method. In this case, our method can generate Chinese characters flexibly by reading a few examples. Experiments demonstrate that our method has a powerful one-shot/few-shot generalization ability by inferring the style representation, which is the first attempt to learn to write new-style Chinese characters by observing only one or a few examples.

Abstract:
On new construction projects, designers are frequently faced with the choice of whether to use raised face or ring joint flanges for piping systems. Often, decisions are made based on flange types used in the past, without due consideration for the merits of either style. On major piping projects, the decision can have significant and far reaching impacts for the owner of the facility, from a cost, constructability, and operational point of view. The authors of this paper studied several recent projects in North America and Europe and performed a technical comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of each style of flange. The authors also performed a comprehensive estimate of the cost differential between using the different styles of flanges. The provision of both technical and economic data in one paper is intended to provide a resource of data that designers need to make an informed decision about which style of flange to use.

Abstract:
"The major aspects of communication include the communicating individual, the addressee, and the style of communication which can be more objective or subjective. The present study examines the role of the communicator’s motivation and the identity of the addressee of the communication in regard to the style of communication. The motivation was assessed in terms of the cognitive orientation approach (Kreitler & Kreitler) which assumes that motivation is a function of beliefs that may not be completely conscious. The motivation to communicate may be oriented towards sharing and self disclosure or towards withdrawal and distancing oneself from others. The style of communication was assessed in terms of the Kreitler meaning system which enables characterizing the degree to which the communication is based on means that are more objective and interpersonally-shared means (viz. attributive and comparative means) or more personal-subjective ones (viz. examples and metaphors). The hypothesis was that the style of communication is determined by one’s motivation and by the recipient’s characteristics, which in the present context was gender. It was expected that when the motivation supports sharing and the addressee is a woman the style would be mainly subjective, while when the motivation supports withholding information and the addressee is a man the style would be objective. The participants were 70 undergraduates. The tool was a cognitive orientation questionnaire. The experimental task was a story that had to be recounted. The narratives were coded in terms of the Kreitler meaning system. The data was analyzed by the Cox proportional hazards model. The findings supported the hypothesis of the study. Major conclusions referred to the motivational determinants of communication styles."

Abstract:
Abstract A bursting number of achievements in the autonomous vehicle industry have been obtained during the past decades. Various systems have been developed to make automated driving possible. Due to the algorithm used in the autonomous vehicle system, the performance of the vehicle differs from one to another. However, very few studies have given insight into the influence caused by implementing different algorithms from a human factors point of view. Two systems based on two algorithms with different characteristics are utilized to generate the two driving styles of the autonomous vehicle, which are implemented into a driving simulator in order to create the autonomous driving experience. User’s skin conductance (SC) data, which enables the evaluation of user’s cognitive workload and mental stress were recorded and analyzed. Subjective measures were applied by filling out Swedish occupational fatigue inventory (SOFI-20) to get a user self-reporting perspective view of their behavior changes along with the experiments. The results showed that human’s states were affected by the driving styles of different autonomous systems, especially in the period of speed variation. By analyzing users’ self-assessment data, a correlation was observed between the user “Sleepiness” and the driving style of the autonomous vehicle. These results would be meaningful for the future development of the autonomous vehicle systems, in terms of balancing the performance of the vehicle and user’s experience.

Abstract:
The successes of deep residual learning are mainly based on one key insight: instead of learning a completely new representation y = H(x), it is much easier to learn and optimize its residual mapping F(x)= H(x)-x, as F(x) could be generally closer to zero than the non-residual function H(x). In this paper, we further exploit this insight by explicitly configuring each feature channel with a fine-grained learning style. We define two types of channel-wise learning styles: Refine and Represent. A Refine channel is learnt via the residual function yi= Fi(x) + xi with a regularization term on the channel response ||Fi(x)||, aiming to refine the input feature channel xi of the layer. A Represent channel directly learns a new representation yi = Hi(x) without calculating the residual function with reference to xi. We apply random channel-wise configuration to each residual learning block. Experimental results on the CIFAR10, CIFAR100 and ImageNet datasets demonstrate that our proposed method can substantially improve the performance of conventional residual networks including ResNet, ResNeXt and SENet.

Abstract:
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test is known to be a quick and easy way to build good team dynamics. However the workplace is not always built around four person teams that you can easily change based on individual personalities. Research has shown that the various MBTI personalities associate with different learning styles. This gives reason to believe that different individual designers may synthesize data and conceptualize ideas differently in a design environment. If this is true, designers may need a customizable environment or they may need to explore different ways to achieve their potential. This paper examines how individuals with different MBTI personality types take in and view information during the conceptualization stages of product design and whether the way information is inputed is vital to an innovative product design.
