Abstract:
The aims of this study were to examine the relationship between psychological mindedness and adult attachment styles, and to assess the effects of a match or mismatch on these concepts between therapists and their clients. A critical review of the literature highlighted ambiguities in definition and measurement, which this study also aimed to clarify. A pilot study confirmed the validity of the measures chosen for the study and provided preliminary data. This thesis comprises two chapters. The first chapter is a systematic review and synthesis of the literature on the relationship between attachment style and challenging behaviour in people with developmental disabilities (DD). From seven identified papers, which include correlational and intervention studies, the findings show that there is limited evidence to suggest that there is a relationship between attachment style and challenging behaviour in people with DD. Despite research documenting the association between shame and aspects of poor psychological functioning, shame's adverse effects have remained largely invisible in modern societies. Shame has been described as the "attachment emotion" (Lewis, 1980), yet, there is little research that examines the relationship between attachment style and shame, and conclusions from this research are tempered by methodological limitations. The current study aimed to address methodological limitations with a quasi-experimental design and employed measures of state and trait shame, shame coping styles, an Emotio
