Abstract:
The article is concerned with the theoretical issue of the status of style in visual arts, aiming to demonstrate that – within art history – stylistics acquired its disciplinary autonomy in the late 18th century when, J. J. Winckelmann was the first to detach stylistics from rhetoric, thus expanding the field of stylistic competence to the history of art. It was also the time when, under the influence of early Romanticism, the entirely opposite tendencies originated, those of the emphasized individuation of art. Therefore, parallel to the birth of theoretical notion of “the styles of the eras”, romanticists not only paved the way for Modernism, but also thwarted the application of a newly risen stylistic methodology concerned with the cultural codification of style. The disagreement between the “classicists”, and “romanticists”, eventually culminated in the schism of the Paris Salon and the emergence of a wide range of new trends, heterogeneous conceptions and avant-garde movement, all in a very short space of time. The concept of “the style of epoch” has been staggered by the challenges of the 20th century. The function of culture within the stylistic characteristics of the 19th century art production was appropriated by artists, whose artwork acquired total objectual autonomy. The cultural and stylistic codification of of historical periods conceived in the 18th century could no longer be applied to the heterogeneous art produced during the Modernist era. By affirming the obviousness of the visual, Modernism eluded all the semantic, functional, utilitarian, narrative and symbolic burdens of earlier periods. This article endeavours to show how, subsequent to the epoch of Modernism, style can be discussed exclusively at a level of the apparent expressed features of an artwork. Codification which follows the principle of temporal “anchoring” in the cultural context of the Modernits era of Modernism remains both risky and ineffective stylistic strategy.

Gabriel Fauré has been neglected as composer in terms of international recognition. It is indeed true that the art of his music is not revealed at first sight: one must take time to discover the beauty and authentic meaning concealed in the depths thereof. While it is relatively true that musicians recognize the originality of his melodies, there seems to be a lack of appreciation of his contributions in the field of chamber music.

Abstract:
Cindy McTee, Regents Professor of Composition in the College of Music at the University of North Texas, is one of America's leading composers. Her music is an eclectic blend of the "American" sound that is created by the use of a multiplicity of techniques. This document uses three of McTee's most recent (to date) works for wind band: Timepiece, Ballet for Band and Finish Line, to identify the primary stylistic characteristic's of the composer's music, which include: jazz influence; use of ostinati, pseudo-ostinati and machine-like rhythmic patterns and figures; creation of extended and angular melodic lines; progressive "walking" bass lines; and the use of octatonic and chromatic collections. Through the identification of stylistic characteristics, concise stylistic analysis of the works, interview transcript, list of composer's works to date, and selected discography, this document will add to the limited body of scholarly writing on the composer.

Although Magdeburg cantor Heinrich Grimm was frequently listed among prominent musical figures of the early seventeenth century such as Heinrich Schütz, Johann Hermann Schein, and Michael Praetorius in music lexica through the nineteenth century, he has almost disappeared from modern scholarship. However, a resurgence in Grimm studies has begun in recent years, especially in the areas of biographical study and compositional output. In this study, I examine the yet unexplored music-analytic perspective by investigating the stylistic characteristics of Grimm's 1631 motet, Unser Leben wehret siebenzig Jahr'. Furthermore, I compare his compositional technique to that of his contemporaries and predecessors with the goal of examining the work from both Renaissance and Baroque perspectives.

Taheri, Saeedeh. "Cognitive stylistics approach to cinematic characterization." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2018. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/79240/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the cognitive process of cinematic character construal and explores the question of how narrative film viewers presumably understand characters and make impressions about them as a result of the interplay of different types of schema. Based on the cognitive concept of schema (Barlett [1932] 1995), Speech Act Theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969) and cognitivist film theory (Bordwell,1985), a cognitive framework, which is inscribed within the cognitive stylistics theories and analytical frameworks, is proposed for character impression formation. The model posits that viewers understand characters in terms of the interactions between three planes of background knowledge: 1. Social knowledge (knowledge of real-life people, social roles, and interpersonal relations), 2. Narrative film knowledge (knowledge of film narrative, style and techniques), 3. Pragmalinguistic knowledge (knowledge of linguistic and pragmatic norms. The focus of the linguistic plane is on Speech Act Theory). This research argues that film draws on medium-specific, multimodal devices to tell the story and create characters. With regard to the multimodality of film discourse, this thesis suggests a toolkit for character creation and comprehension. The three planes of social, film and pragmalinguistic schemas and also the marked aspects of the suggested cinematic character creation toolkit are all applied to three art auteur films: The Piano Teacher (2001), Autumn Sonata (1987), and Ten (2001), whose comprehension is challenging for viewers Pragmalinguistic because of their deviations from the conventional norms of Hollywood cinema in terms of narrative, characterization, cinematic style and techniques. Methodologically, this analysis is informed by multimodal analysis (Kress and van Leeuwen, 1996), and multimodal transcription (Baldry and Thibault, 2006) in particular, which consider text as an ensemble of different communication modes all of which contribute to meaningmaking. Thus, this analysis presents a detailed account of viewers' plausible understanding trajectory, and an explanation of linguistic and visual/cinematic strategies to narrative (as the context in which characters are created and developed), and particularly character creation within the scope of the films mentioned above.

ABSTRACT: The following master’s degree thesis presents a commented translation project of the first ten chapters of the work Alfreda ou a Quimera by Vasco Graça Moura. A reflection about the specificities of literary translation and its inherent difficulties are the starting point of the commentary. The main obstacles found throughout this translation project are also presented. Thus, some of the questions that deserved special attention during the translation process are also approached: the stylistic characteristics of the text and the cultural references present in this work. Whenever possible, specific cases, properly exemplified and based in theoretical assumptions, are presented in the translation commentary.

ABBREVIATION IN CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN LANGUAGE IN COMPARISON WITH THE CZECH LANGUAGE Dissertation work is aimed at confrontation study of abbreviation in Bulgarian in comparison with Czech and at the description of abbreviations as specific language symbols. Contemporary language tendencies and the changes in the field of abbreviation in relation to the language typology are taken into account. The work is dedicated to the grammatical, stylistic and semantic characteristics of the abbreviations, while a substantial part of the confrontation description addresses the graphical and initial abbreviations, which create a central part of the partial system of abbreviation formations. From the confrontational aspect, there is also described the ability of abbreviations to serve as word-formation base for derivatives. The dissertation work also includes the results of socio-linguistic research made by questionnaire method, where the respondents evaluated the abbreviations of an international character and the words containing abbreviated bases implemented into the text written in Cyrillic.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the characteristics of the left sentence periphery in Old High German. In the earlier OHG prose texts we still find some archaic characteristics of a non- or pre-verb-second grammar. These include residual and partly productive features of a non-conflated C-domain arguably inherited from Proto-Germanic or even Proto-Indo-European. On the other hand, there is ample evidence that the precursor of the so-called prefield position already existed in OHG and that it was already a target for both operator movement and Stylistic Fronting. All these phenomena shed interesting light on the question of which syntactic steps the language had to take in order consolidate its verb-second grammar.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter takes a closer look at the role of the accordion in klezmer music. Like the pioneering Italian American virtuoso accordionists, Jewish musicians felt equally at home playing classical and folk music. The select analysis of early accordion playing styles and stylistic characteristics sheds light on the interaction and interplay of klezmer musicians with their surrounding worlds—Old and New. A distinctive feature of the early “klezmer sound” was the accordion's imitation of the human voice heard in liturgical, paraliturgical, and Yiddish song. By the late 1930s, the accordion was often used for chordal accompaniment (rather than as a solo instrument). It was an integral element of the popular Hasidic bands of the 1960s and the “klezmer ensembles” that embraced the new Israeli music as well as earlier “Palestinian” music. Although it was often deemed “an outsider,” for the revivalists of the 1980s and beyond, the accordion has been characteristic of the klezmer style.

Abstract:
Rock and Rhapsodies is the first book-length musicological study of British rock band Queen. It primarily addresses the material written, recorded, and released between 1973 and 1991. The text provides readers with a nuanced analytical account of the group’s songs and illuminates the varied stylistic and historical contexts in which Queen’s music was created. The key conceptual basis for the analysis is an idiolect, which refers to the distinct musical style of a single artist. Having documented the key features of Queen’s idiolect, the book further explores the nature of specific musical characteristic and uses them to respond to a range of wider analytical and discursive issues as pertaining to style, genre, form, time, voice, and historiography. Rock and Rhapsodies comprises twelve chapters. The introduction documents Queen’s place in scholarly literature and unfolds the principal analytical methodology. The following three chapters address the structural details of Queen’s idiolect and songs, before analysing the voices of Queen’s singers. The vocal techniques are related to discourses of authenticity and, in the case of Freddie Mercury, the queer voice. The five subsequent chapters identify the changing and myriad stylistic influences on Queen, as well as relate the band to the major rock movements of the 1970s: hard, glam, and progressive. The final chapter explores the replacement singers, Queen in wider popular media, and the influence of the band, since Mercury’s death in 1991.

Abstract:
At first glance, the Aramaic letters embedded in the biblical book of Ezra look like authentic documents issued in favour of the Judaeans by the Achaemenid chanceries. This chapter shows that the letters display formulaic and stylistic features differing from authentic imperial Persian royal correspondence, that the contents of these letters are influenced by other biblical texts, chiefly Deutero-Isaiah and the books of Chronicles, and that the image of the king in these letters comprises aspects of the euergetism characteristic of Hellenistic monarchs. Grätz therefore suggests that the letters in Ezra 4–7 are fictitious and serve certain literary and ideological purposes: they present the Persian period as a time of divinely monitored reconstruction after the exile, and they emphasize God’s lasting election of Judah and the Jerusalem temple. The deployment of letters for such purposes can be compared with similar practices in Hellenistic historiography.

Abstract:
This is a preliminary examination related to a portal faced of a public building in the city of La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain, carved in the mid-sixteenth century, of rich lines and architectural symbols characteristic of the Renaissance early stage. It was set up in ashlars, of chemical composition and granulometry that gave to it the classification of toba basaltic volcanic, compact granular, reddish in colour. Its high chemical resistance was not able to withstand the 450 years of exposure and at the time of diagnosis its surface had a high degree of dirt adhered and a profound loss of material by disaggregation and breakdowns, what had partially destroyed valuable elements of its characterization. This preliminary investigation fell exclusively on the stone material that composed the faced, although could be observed other elements like roof tile in the ceiling, and carpentry on the window and door. For that reason, the focus of this work has been directed to the stylistic symbolism and diagnose of the main element, being restricted to the stonework, where was the essence of the centennial facade. Therefore, this previous analysis was performed objecting to prepare the base for a restoration work considering the archaeological line of thought, in order to retrieve and maintain its forms and volumes, working on fundamental architectural elements to rescue and ensure to future generations the true message that was exteriorized.

Abstract:
This book makes an argument for the intellectual ambition and intellectual achievement of science fiction, a genre consistently undervalued by professional literary critics. It is pointed out repeatedly how much the genre owes to developments in anthropology, history, and other “soft sciences”; how the authority of the hard sciences is both asserted and challenged; and how the authority of ancient myths and modern values are likewise interrogated, with widely variant results. Science fiction, it is argued, has been a collective “thinking machine” for authors and readers alike, often (and especially in its early years) people without academic experience or intellectual support. It has been (but increasingly less so) a genre for autodidacts. Reading and writing it is nevertheless an education in itself, as the author shows with repeated personal prefaces both to the book as a whole and to each chapter. Science fiction, finally, has its own rhetoric, seen in neologisms, paratextual devices, anachronisms, breaches of stylistic decorum, and the manipulation of degraded information, techniques little understood by and often incomprehensible to critics used only to the conventions of mainstream literature. All these features contribute to the description of science fiction as hard reading, but correspondingly rewarding reading. They have made science fiction the most characteristic literary genre of the twentieth and now the twenty-first centuries.

Abstract:
This book examines the intricacies of the American film's stylistic remediation of comics. Stylistic remediation refers to the stylistic practice by films (both adaptations of comics and original properties), in which they have increasingly relied on the formal characteristics of comic books (such as panels, speed lines, the dissection of motion, flat compositions). For their part, comics have drawn upon formal devices derived from film (such as the film noir compositional technique of high-contrast lighting and Photoshop assisted motion blurring to produce a more cinematic look). The book explores how stylistic remediation complicates the idea of media specificity, the role of horizontal integration and conglomeration in the process of stylistic remediation, the industrial motivation behind remediation in films and comics, and whether the remediation of comic book stylistics into films is fundamentally a by-product of technologies and an indication of a larger ontological shift from cinema to digital cinema.

Abstract:
Cope’s Computers and Musical Style (1991) describes a computer program that allegedly can represent and replicate musical styles solely on the basis of compositions that have been entered into it. If this claim is correct, then it must be that an oeuvre’s stylistic characteristics locally supervene on its textual features, which roughly means that its stylistic properties are entirely determined by its textual properties. In my paper I argue that stylistic properties do not locally supervene on textual properties, and thus that neither Cope’s program nor any other that essentially works like it can represent or replicate styles.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how Livy in his first book presents the leges regiae (some of which can be found exclusively in Ab Urbe condita) in light of the following categories: religious life; civitas’ fundamental institutions; political life; war and army; agrarian laws; granting of citizenship. It appears that in Livy the leges are straightforward and detailed when they are related to the religious sphere, while they appear more concise and vague when they are measures of a heterogeneous nature. Livy also systematically adjusts his narrative technique on the basis of the function assigned to a law. He shows particular care in reporting technical formulas when he wishes to emphasize the sacredness and longevity of laws concerning founding traditions and “constitutional norms”; on the other hand, Livy emphasizes those aspects of the laws that would appear in line with the characteristics that he wants to attribute to the kings.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to generalize and present the lexico-grammatical and stylistic features of English-language advertising slogans. The study allows us to determine the need of society to understand and conceptualize advertising, the mechanisms of verbal influence of advertising texts, analysis of language tools on which are based logical and emotional argumentation in advertising to persuade and motivate the audience to action, ensuring the ability of advertising text to remember . Methodology. The survey is conducted on the basis of a comparison of the data of the respondents (using the same questionnaire) on the impact of advertising slogans on the consumer, both popularity and brand. The survey also covered the family of students, which made it possible to compare these options for answering the survey questions. The results of the survey showed that younger respondents adopted English-language advertising slogans to choose about the benefits of the product and its brand. However, the older generation was more likely to be driven by savings and proven brands. Advertising for them is a show and does not deserve trust but carries the impetus for further study. Practical consequences. As the younger generation is effectively influenced by advertising slogans, modern advertising compositions take into account the characteristics of this audience. What do they aim for their income, exclusivity, price variations. As for the senior respondents, they demonstrated time-tested thrift and a scrupulous approach to pricing strategies for advertising slogans. Thus, the experimental study showed a multi-vector feature of the respondents' attitude to advertising slogans.

Abstract:
The sudden appearance of Maya-style characteristics in the art of Epiclassic sites in Central Mexico has sparked debate regarding the relationship between the polity of Cacaxtla and the distant Maya Lowlands. Early studies linked these developments, described in ethnohistoric sources, to migrations of the Olmeca-Xicalanca of the southern Gulf Coast. Recent studies assert that Cacaxtla’s artists adopted an “eclectic” assortment of foreign stylistic elements in order to proclaim ties to distant sources of wealth and power that were not necessarily rooted in historic reality. This study argues that Cacaxtla’s artists deployed stylistic, technical, and iconographic conventions in a manner that reflects deep and sustained engagement with specific Maya cities rather than superficial claims of aggrandizement. Evaluation through current anthropological understandings of how and why people migrate and how group identity is expressed in the midst of population movements suggests that Cacaxtla’s monumental art programs constitute an additional line of evidence in support of Epiclassic migration from the southern Gulf Coast, or western Maya Lowlands, to Central Mexico.

Abstract:
This chapter surveys current theories of the Baroque, distinguishing between those that see it historically and those that view it as a recurring stylistic quirk. I draw particularly on José Antonio Maravall to advance a schema of recurring Baroque characteristics – fictionalising, hyperbole, melancholy, kitsch and plateauing. Some concepts will seem unfamiliar to scholars used to considering the Baroque as primarily concerned with music, painting or sculpture, or inextricably connected with the Counter-Reformation. These concepts are concerned less with the surface characteristics of the period’s culture and more with underlying ideological trends. I also ask how we can speak of the ‘English’ Baroque, since it has long seemed an alien concept to the residual tradition of English literary and cultural history.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of Hildegard’s music, beginning with an examination of the way in which musical ideas and imagery pervade all of her writings. A discussion of the Dendermonde and Riesencodex collections of her music is followed by a summary of stylistic traits, including characteristics of her poetry (e.g. fascination with viriditas), her choice of subject matter, the use of models, melodic practices, fondness for melisma, and extremes of length and range in selected works. The chapter concludes with her conception of mode and use of accidentals. Throughout comparisons are made with both traditional plainchant (which Hildegard’s music resembles only imperfectly) and contemporary regional practice (which her music does reflect).

Abstract:
This chapter begins from the premise that’s Queen idiolect or ‘sound’ was distinct in popular music. Using the concept of ‘style planets’, the idiolect characteristics are connected to numerous and varied stylistic sources including 1970s hard rock, 1970s Baroque pop, 1960s pop, soul, and pre-WWII American popular song. These influences are identified in the textural structures, performance gestures, and harmonic choices. Using the concept of ‘musical worlding’, it is suggested that a hypothetical listener might regard Queen’s idiolect as predominantly placed within the world of hard rock, but made to sound distinct and unique because of the integration of seemingly incongruous style influences within their songs. This analysis is conducted with primary reference to ‘We Are the Champions’

Abstract:
In his critical edition of fragmentary Roman oratory of the Augustan and Tiberian periods, Andrea Balbo has dealt with many declaimers who were active both in the schools and the forum or during centumviral trials. We know about their activity in particular from Seneca the Elder: among those are L. Arruntius Pater, C. Albucius Silus, M. Porcius Latro, and T. Labienus, as well as Cassius Severus. This chapter examines some of the school speeches witnessed by Seneca with regard to their stylistic features and compares the characteristics of these fictional orations with fragments of real oratory, giving particular attention to rhetorical elements that can be ascribed to actio, and special emphasis on the declamatory contributions of Albucius Silus and Porcius Latro.

Abstract:
The caves of Escoural and Maltravieso are the only caves with Palaeolithic rock art in the Southwest Peninsula. These two contexts are similar in their geological characteristics, circumstances of their discoveries, state of conservation, location outside the preferential territorial scope of Palaeolithic art and in the absence of a tradition of scientific research. This set of factors is governed by the need to prioritize the conservation of both cavities in the context of the growing social interest in the first manifestations of rock art. The FIRST-ART project intends to improve the knowledge of both caves taking into account their technical, stylistic and iconographic aspects through multidisciplinary research and the application of new analysis and documentation technologies using digital and 3D.

Abstract:
Beyond being a shelter, houses are such structures which obtain meanings shaped by the influence of culture, particularly reflecting the society’s socio-cultural structure. As a time-khronos and space-topos pattern, the houses reflect the characteristics of the culture or ethnic group which they are part of, while on the other hand, they reflect the images of the individual’s essence as a communicative action. The effect of climate and typology, which are physical components of culture, as well as social components of culture, such as value systems, belief, lifestyle and habits, are cardinal factors in the formation of traditional houses. In this respect, traditional structures are visual representation spaces that narrates their own story, like verbal culture, and they convey their unique codes through visuality. This study, which discusses traditional architecture as a cultural text, aims to reveal traditional Urfa houses through analytical readings, within the context of visual semiology.. The samples selected within the scope of the study will be evaluated according to the context of stylistic features they are part of, such as plan and spatial perspective, the location of the houses, and detections regarding the visual culture will be discussed through the cultural and architectural design approach of Umberto Eco.

Abstract:
The instability of modern social conditions, informational and emotional richness of learning contribute to the emergence of negative states of fear, uncertainty, aggression, and provokes psychosomatic disorders of students. In order to satisfy the requirements of society, it is necessary to have a high level of development of the ability to control oneself, allowing self-regulation of the mental state within certain social frameworks. In everyday life, students use sets of techniques developed in individual experience that allow them to cope with negative conditions, enter the educational rhythm or relieve stress. Therefore, it is relevant to study spontaneously developing methods and techniques for self-regulation of states that help prevent the negative dynamics of the current state and provide an acceptable level of adaptation. In this regard, the article aims at studying ordinary ways of self-regulation of negative states of students and their relationship with the productivity of cognitive processes and individual cognitive styles. According to the results of the study, we found that typical negative states of students are fatigue, laziness, frustration. The most frequent methods of their regulation are communication, music, walking, sleeping. The relationship between the productive, stylistic characteristics of cognitive processes and the choice of self-regulation methods is shown. Thus, respondents with a high level of imagination and heuristic cognitive style choose a method of communication. Differences in the methods of self-regulation and experienced states in boys and girls were revealed. The results can be of interest to teachers and practical psychologists in education.

Abstract:
Such a specific element of political communication as a slogan, which is often used within the election campaign, has been to the present day a less studied issue in the Russian and Kazakh political linguistics. Nowadays this genre of political text is being mainly mastered by the sociologists, politologists, image-makers, etc., dealing with the issues of electoral technologies. This article deals with the study of stylistic features of a political slogan which are characteristic for the election campaigns of Russia and Kazakhstan held in the period of recent decades. The results of the study show that the main purpose of their use is to enhance the expressiveness of the statement. This allows us to conclude that the language of political slogans has great opportunities and resources to implement this impact. It also becomes apparent that persuasiveness is one of the key functions of the slogan's pragmatic functions.
