Abstract:
The article considers various peculiarities of implementing stylistic devices (metaphor, gradation, personification, contrast) in the advertising poly-code media text that, in its turn, serves as the object of the research. The research proves that the realization of stylistic devices can be actualized not only on the basis of the close correlation of iconic and verbal components (integration or extension relationships), but also within the structure of the iconic component independently and without any verbal elements. The author searches out that the notion of the stylistic device can be expanded and go beyond the boundaries of text and discourse. This fact outlines and stresses the high stylistic potential of the iconic component in the structure of the advertising media text and gives reasons for the development of visual stylistics that can be considered to be a new branch of stylistics in general.

Abstract:
The article examines the recurrent stylistic devices in marriage vows. The investigation of the linguo-stylistic devices in marriage vows reveals that the use of a certain stylistic device pursues a definite communicative purpose, namely – the purpose of making the speech more emotional and evaluative, more expressive and stylistically colored. Many marriage vows contain elements of the creative thinking of the couple, their personal attitude and rich imagination which is expressed in such linguo-stylistic devices as metaphor, epithet, paraphrasis, inversion, parallel constructions and enumeration.

Abstract:
The article deals with the study of stylistic techniques and means of expression characteristic of English speech expression, the study of means and methods of communication of independent sentences, as well as phrasal units, ways to combine them into fragments and whole speech texts. The paper identifies and generalizes scientific approaches to the study of stylistic syntax techniques, analyzes syntactic constructions that have expressive potential and pragmatic orientation. It is established that the subject of syntactic stylistics is also the study of the specifics of the functioning of expressive means and techniques in complex linguistic texts. It is found that the stylistic technique is realized, as a rule, in the context of phrasal units, paragraph and whole text, and the interaction of sentence models in these contexts gives emotional and expressive meaning to the segments of speech that they form. Thus, stylistic devices based on formal and semantic interactions of several syntactic constructions or sentences in a particular context, is one of the richest sources of speech expression. These stylistic devices serve as a means of poetic syntax, and are widely used in fiction, journalism and are found in scientific language. Despite the fact that each stylistic device individually contributes to the overall expressiveness of the text, a greater effect is achieved through their interaction, and with the help of these stylistic devices, contact with the addressee is established, the emotional background and emphaticity of the text are enhanced. Therefore, expressive means and stylistic techniques of syntax, which are created both with the use of stylistically marked constructions and without their participation, are one of the richest means of stylistics of the English language. The considered cases of violation of the usual logic of syntactic connection of parts of a complex sentence, semantic differences between their usual and occasional use bring subjective motives into the text and are used with certain stylistic purposes, which due to functioning together have a greater effect.

Abstract:
This article deals with the English proverbs containing the concept of woman. The aim of the research was to analyse the means of expression used to portray the woman in her various social roles, to describe her personal traits and to reveal the attitude towards women in the society. The novelty of this paper lies in systematizing the stylistic devices used in proverbs about women and discovering a device that has not been included in the existing classifications of expressive means. In the course of the research, the authors selected English proverbs with the lexeme woman and analysed them from the point of view of stylistics. The fact that such proverbs are highly numerous indicates the importance of gender relations in a society, while their subject matter demonstrates an arrogant and often dismissive attitude towards women in a world dominated by men. The stylistic analysis found metaphor, simile and epithet to be the most productive lexical devices in creating a negative image of women, while parallelism, antithesis and repetition seem to be the most frequent syntactic devices serving to emphasize the connotations of the proverbs. Irony and paradox render the sarcastic, condescending attitude towards women; this function is also performed by intentionally illogical sequences of homogeneous parts of the sentence, when women are placed on a par with animals, inanimate objects, and the elements (the stylistic device for the first time described by the authors). It should be noted that the characteristic features of proverbs as a genre of folk art, i.e. rhythmic, intonational, and phonetic, are inherent in English proverbs about women as well. The material obtained can be used in linguistics courses at universities.

As the reading is an essential part of language learning process, stylistic and critical analysis of texts are well accepted methods among language learning readers. The following article defines a reading skill as essential as other skills in language learning and demonstrates the accurate usage and theory of literary or stylistic devices such as dialogue, repetition, symbolism, simile, metaphor, and personification which are applied on well-known proses “Shuga’s Sign” by Kazakh writer Beimbet Mailin and “Hills like White Elephants” by American author Ernest Hemingway. Thus, each device is carefully explained with a following illustration of analysis of examples from the proses. Therefore, comparison between the usage of stylistic devices in Kazakh and American proses is also provided in order to reveal the similarities and differences of both compositions.

Abstract:
A film poem is a cinematic work which uses a written, often canonical poem as its inspiration. Film poems frequently exceed the likely intentions of the poet, becoming something new; one creative work is used as a springboard for another. Typically, however, in film poems the poem’s stylistic detail is largely irrelevant to its cinematic execution. In a previous article, I spotlighted how this oversight/limitation can be addressed by bringing film poems into stylistics teaching and assessment. That article showed how stylistic analysis of a poem can be used to drive generation of a screenplay for a film of the poem. But, it did not show how the film could be produced on that basis. In contrast, this article does just that, modelling how a student could make a film from a poem, with their mobile device, where stylistic analysis has been used to stimulate the screenplay. Accompanying this article is a film that I made on a mobile phone. This is of Michael Donaghy’s poem, Machines. In developing this approach for producing film poems via stylistic analysis, I incorporate ideas from the philosopher, Gilles Deleuze, and from his collaboration with the psychoanalyst, Félix Guattari, in their book A Thousand Plateaus. In particular, I make use of their concept of ‘intensive multiplicity’. Generally, this article highlights how common ownership of mobile devices by university students, in many countries, can be used, in conjunction with stylistic analysis, to foster a different approach to interpreting poetry creatively which, in turn, can extend students’ natural capacity for creative thinking.

Abstract:
The present research focuses on the analysis of the most common stylistic devices that are used to depict characters’ emotions in two novels “Flowers for Algernon” (2006) and “The Minds of Billy Milligan” (1995) written by the American author Daniel Keyes. The patterns of translation of emotionally coloured extracts of the text where these stylistic devices have been used are analysed in this research. As stylistic devices are considered to be an integral part of the composition of works of fiction and they add emotional colouring and exert pragmatic influence on the readers, translators Viktor Shovkun and Olena Stusenko faced onerous work as their task was to find accurate equivalents and use translation transformations in order to avoid literal translation, achieve adequacy on all levels and preserve the stylistic colouring. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the translation should fully replace the original text and recipients should perceive the translated text as identical to the original even though stylistic devices and the emotional component of linguistic semantics are arduous to convey in translation. This research also concludes that translators most often resorted to lexical (concretization, generalization and modulation), lexico-grammatical (omission and addition) and grammatical (verbalization and nominalization) translation transformations to avoid literal translation. It has also been established and verified by a comparative method that more stylistic devices are used in the Ukrainian translation than in the original text. The most widely used stylistic devices are metaphors, epithets, comparisons and idioms. Key words: stylistic device, translation transformation, source text, target text, pragmatics, communicative intention, emotions.

Abstract:
Cognitive stylistics offers a renewed focus on readerly or audience interpretation, but while cognitive stylistic tools have been applied in the investigation of literary texts, their application to TV, film and screen has been more limited. This article examines the cognitive stylistic features of the voiceover narration in the first TV series adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale to explore the representation of June/Offred’s ‘split selves’ and how these are mediated through a prominent ‘filmic composition device’. Through analysis of voiceovers and corresponding production choices in series 1, this study explores, first, how the different modes of communication – both choices of visual production (such as shallow-focus shots) and linguistic features (such as ‘you’ address and container metaphors) – combine to show Offred’s split perspective; and second, how these stylistic elements work to foreground the key themes of the series, such as imprisonment, objectification and surveillance.

Abstract:
The current thesis consists in the scholarly edition of a collection of anonymous proto-Byzantine stylistic devices, dated from the fifth and sixth centuries. It is entitled De figurisorationis (Rhetores Graeci, III, L. Spengel ed., Leipzig, Teubner, 1856, 110-160). Theirauthor, a Professor convinced of Hermogenes excellence, intended the inventory of theHermogenian devices for a student. These same devices can also be found in the Corpusrhetoricum (Corpus rhetoricum, M. Patillon ed., Paris, Les Belles Lettres, 2008-2014), bothin the treatise devoted to invention (De inuentione (C. rhet. III1)) by the Pseudo-Hermogenesand Hermogenes treatise dedicated to the stylistic categories of the discourse (De ideis (C.rhet. IV)). That collection was then expanded by a census of unusual devices found in theIliad scholia, to which were added some other kind of figures and additional observations.Gloses can also be found in various passages of the text, some of Christian inspiration. The current edition includes:I. 1) A reminder of various opinions on the text; 2) the dating of the text; 3) anexamination of its unity; 4) a study about the main theoretical orientations in the field ofstylistic devices; 5) an analysis of the theoretical and practical position of the author; 6) astudy of the manuscript tradition; 7) an investigation of the links between the text, theDemosthenean corpus and the Demosthenes Scholia; 8) an elucidation of the principlesguiding the current edition; 9) a few observations on prior editions;II. 1) The text established and reviewed, with footnotes (lectures, witnesses, sources); 2)a French translation; 3) a commentary

Full text
Abstract:
Subject: Semantic aspects of advertising slogans in English discourse. Goal: to determine the structural features of the discourse of English-language advertising and ways to translate advertising slogans into Ukrainian. The theoretical value of the study is determined by its contribution to the general theory of translation; its results complement scientific knowledge about the features of advertising slogans in modern English, the main motives and trends in their application. According to the goal, three chapters were developed that describe all the stages of processing the selected topic. The first section highlights the theoretical foundations of the English-language advertising discourse, reveals the concept of advertising discourse and the linguistic features of the English-language advertising discourse. The second section describes the components of modern English-language advertising, namely the structure of the advertising text and non-verbal element. The structure of the verbal component of advertising and its interaction with visual elements were examined. The third section analyzes and characterizes the translation transformations and gives options for their practical application using examples of English-language advertising slogans. The main methods of translating English-language advertising slogans in Ukrainian were also substantiated. It turned out that the translation cannot be an absolute reflection of the text of the original, which means that the main task of the translator is to build a text that will be as close as possible to the original text in terms of the semantics, structure and potential influence that were laid down in the concept of the slogan. The main problem is that it is not always possible to find language parallels between English and Ukrainian. And precisely in order to avoid such a problem, the translator must apply translation transformations. The prospect of this study is the possibility of further studying the features of the translation of the verbal components of an advertising message, as well as their interaction with visual materials. The characterization of translation transformations will help to understand the area of their use, their correct combination and avoidance of mistakes in the translation of advertising slogans. The results of the analysis of the study of translation transformations will provide an opportunity to understand how and in which situation it is better to apply them. The modern world does not stand still, it is developing in all areas, and advertising is promoting each area. It is this aspect that indicates the further relevance and feasibility of studying the advertising discourse and how to translate it.

Abstract

The following essay is an analysis of the translation process from English into Swedish of four articles about the oceans of the world, printed in The Economist in December 2008. This publication claims to be using a language characterised by "clarity, style and precision", wherefore these concepts provide the focus for the analysis. "Clarity" was looked at in terms of metaphors, "style" in terms of quotes and allusions present in headlines, leads and subheadings and "precision" was studied in terms of hedging.

Metaphor is employed as a clarifying device in scientific discourse. The 36 occurring metaphors were classified as either 'dead', 'cliché', 'stock' or 'original'. Dead metaphors, 50% of all, turned out to be highly effective in scientific discourse and therefore the term 'fixed metaphors' would be preferred. The original metaphors used give evidence to the writer's literary ambitions. The translation strategy applied was in most cases literal translation.

The publication makes frequent use of quotes, allusions and aestheticizing devices in headlines, leads and subheadings. The origins of those stylistic elements are not always transparent and had to be identified. In case of existing recognized translations those were kept; when not available, original translations were attempted. Adopting the house-style by taking balance, metre, rhyme and alliteration into consideration during the translation process was time-consuming, indicating that a fully translated edition on a weekly basis is not feasible. Literal translation was rarely possible, instead equivalence was aimed at.

Hedging is a means for increased precision in scientific discourse. The main reason for using epistemic hedging with a proposition is face-saving, i.e. the writer avoids responsibility for the truth value of the proposition. 62% of the sentences were found to include at least one hedged instance. The instances of hedging of numerical data and quantifiers were almost equal to the number of hedges referring to the writer's personal stance. Literal translation was adequate for the translation process.

Abstract:
The principal objective of this study was to explore what rhetorical strategies and stylistic devices Presidents Dalia Grybauskaitė and Barack Obama use in their political speeches and how these devices help them to gain the audience’s attention and render the message. The speeches of the two Presidents Dalia Grybauskaitė and B. Obama were analyzed in order to highlight the patterns of the usage of rhetorical strategies and to investigate the stylistic devices which are aimed at making speech more emphatic, expressive and persuasive. The method chosen for the study was content analysis including generalization and evaluation of the results. The results of the research showed a significant contribution of stylistic means to persuade the listeners on an emotional level or even to manipulate them. The next step of the study must be conducted to determine stylistic means which can influence rhythmical feature of the speech.

Linguistic expression used by the media influences the linguistic expression of its users. The peculiarities of the linguistic expression used by the media are determined by correct and incorrect units of the language. Correct stylistic means used in the magazine: 1) derivedes; 2) lexical synonyms; 3) syntactical synonyms; 4) stylistic devices – lexical semantic and syntactical. Diminutives – stylistically marked derivedes used to convey not only a degree of endearment but also irony and mockery. The most common suffix of diminutives in the magazine is -ukas, (-ė). The most commonly used semantic devices are metaphor and metonymy. The correct means of linguistic expression are analysed in terms of pragmatic linguistics. Incorrect linguistic expression used in the magazine: 1) barbarisms – unacceptable new loanwords; 2) barbarisms – non-recommended loanwords and their derivatives; 3) partial barbarisms – hybrid words; 4) incorrect neologisms; 5) slang. Barbarisms used in the magazine are mainly of Slavic and English origin. The borrowings from Western languages have spread together with the new technologies, products and services. Barbarisms are examined using the method of semantic and functional analysis and are replaced with appropriate Lithuanian words. The attitude of the media leaders towards their own language culture is also a significant factor.

This chapter investigates Newman’s literary style as it changed over time, paying special attention to the ways in which his Catholic writings depart from the Tractarian reserve and tendency towards abstraction that often govern his earlier prose. Much of the scholarship regarding Newman’s literary style, both in poetry and in prose, has tended to emphasize the influence of the Tractarian doctrine of reserve and the parallel exercise of authorial control through such devices as omission and reticence. This chapter argues that such characterizations are most pertinent to his earlier works, whereas a significant turn towards the anthropological, manifested in a growing openness to the physical and social dimensions of earthly life, may be discerned in Newman’s later prose.

Abstract:
Rhetoric is an engine of social discourse and the art charged with generating and swaying emotion. The history of rhetoric provides a continuous structure by which we can measure how emotions were understood, articulated, and mobilized under various historical circumstances and social contracts. This book is about how rhetoric in the West from Late Antiquity to the later Middle Ages represented the role of emotion in shaping persuasions. It is the first book-length study of medieval rhetoric and the emotions, coloring in what has largely been a blank space between about 600 CE and the cusp of early modernity. Rhetoric in the Middle Ages, as in other periods, constituted the gateway training for anyone engaged in emotionally persuasive writing. Medieval rhetorical thought on emotion has multiple strands of influence and sedimentations of practice. The earliest and most persistent tradition treated emotional persuasion as a property of surface stylistic effect, which can be seen in the medieval rhetorics of poetry and prose, and in literary production. But the impact of Aristotelian rhetoric, which reached the Latin West in the thirteenth century, gave emotional persuasion a core role in reasoning, incorporating it into the key device of proof, the enthymeme. In Aristotle, medieval teachers and writers found a new rhetorical language to explain the social and psychological factors that affect an audience. With Aristotelian rhetoric, the emotions became political. The impact of Aristotle’s rhetorical approach to emotions was to be felt in medieval political treatises, in poetry, and in preaching.

The chapter presents a brief history of the contact of French with English, from 18th-century Anglomania to the global English of the turn of the 21st century, in order to contextualize the singularity of the latest contact period. It then chronicles the changes that commonly occur as donor words become new French words. These changes, illustrated with many borrowed items from the period of virtual contact (1990–2015), can be classified as grammatical shift, semantic shift, stylistic shift, and connotative shift. Beyond demonstrating that an English etymon masks heterogeneous types of French Anglicisms, an up-to-date typology shows how English morphemes are used in novel word-formation devices, such as serial bilingual compounds. The borrowing of phrases plays a marginal yet innovative role in French, including emphasis and punning, and raises the issue of typologies for borrowed/neological phrases.

Abstract:
Chapter 7 examines the ways in which a film’s ideological properties contribute to aesthetic pleasure when they intensify, or when they complicate, viewers’ cognitive and affective responses. The chapter demonstrates the ways in which the ideology of a Hollywood film guides our beliefs, values, and emotional responses. In ideologically unified Hollywood films, such as Die Hard, Independence Day, Pickup on South Street, and Casablanca, narrative and stylistic devices concentrate our beliefs, values, and emotional responses, offering us a purer experience than we can find in most real-life situations. By contrast, ideologically complicated Hollywood films, such as Chinatown, The Third Man, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Last Temptation of Christ, and The Dark Knight, advance their worldviews in a novel, ambiguous, or peculiar way, upsetting our appraisals of events and characters and complicating our intellectual and emotional experiences.

Abstract:
This book, drawing on a broad tapestry of research, offers an exploration of The Hurt Locker (2009), its stylistic and narrative devices, its cultural impact, its reception, and its relationship to the genre of the war film. The book begins with an analysis of what The Hurt Locker ultimately portrays about the Iraq War, which was officially brought to an end by President Barack Obama on the 18 December 2011, but still continues to be fought onscreen. It also explores the central contentions that are key to the affective impact of The Hurt Locker during the time of its release and after a decade later. The book places the film in a richly textured historical, political, and industrial context, arguing that The Hurt Locker is part of a long tradition of films about American wars that play a considerable role in how audiences come to understand the conflicts that they depict. Thus, films about a nation's wars are never “only a movie” but rather should be considered a cultural battleground themselves on which a war of representation is waged.

Abstract:
Situated at the crossroads of rhetoric and fiction, the genre of declamatio offers its practitioners the freedom to experiment with new forms of discourse. This volume places the literariness of Roman declamation into the spotlight by showcasing its theoretical influences, stylistic devices, and generic conventions as related by Seneca the Elder, the author of the Controversiae and Suasoriae, which jointly make up the largest surviving collection of declamatory speeches from antiquity. In so doing, it draws attention to the complexity of these texts, and maps out, for the first time, the sociocultural context for their composition, delivery, and reception. The volume’s chapters have been authored by an international group of leading scholars in Latin literature and rhetoric, and explore not only the historical roles of individual declaimers but also the physical and linguistic techniques upon which they collectively drew. In addition, the ‘dark side of declamation’ is illuminated by contributions on the competitiveness of the arena and the manipulative potential of declamatory skill. In keeping with the volume’s overall treatment of declamation as a literary phenomenon, a section has also been dedicated to intertextuality. This comprehensive, innovative, and up-to-date treatment provides thought-provoking analyses of Roman declamation, and therefore constitutes an essential volume for both students and scholars in the fields of Latin literature, Republican Roman history, and rhetoric.

This chapter focuses on the recruitment of the audience into the “military metaphysics” that C. Wright Mills decries as a symptom of America's Cold War mentality. More specifically, it reads attempts at recruitment made by science fiction films of the period through the use of military stock footage. Pilfering the public domain for footage to be inserted into one's own film was a standard device of inexpensive filmmaking that found one of its most extreme expressions in Alfred E. Green's Invasion U.S.A. (1952). Generally dismissed as a hack job and mercilessly lampooned by Mystery Science Theater 3000, Invasion U.S.A. is a prime example of a politically engaged film using one of the common stylistic devices of 1950s low-budget filmmaking.

Abstract:
The chapter presents a study of antonomasia from usual and occasional perspectives based on the novels by Charlotte Bingham. The urgency of the research is stipulated by the need for scientific comprehension of types of antonomasia and is aimed at identification of their representation in the novels by Charlotte Bingham. The subject of the research is usual and occasional antonomasia, and their types in Charlotte Bingham’s novels. The choice of factual material sources is stipulated by the fact that the novels by Charlotte Bingham have been researched neither in Ukrainian nor in foreign linguistics. The current study uses a combination of general scientific (analysis-synthesis method, continuous sampling method, descriptive method, quantitative analysis) and linguistic methods. The definitional analysis is used to clarify linguistic terms and notions specified by the research topic. The componential analysis is used to pick out the integral and differential semes (components) in the semantic structure of the lexical meaning of the analysed language units; it is also used to identify semantic relations between particular components of the analysed language units. The word-formation analysis is used to single out word-formation patterns of the analysed language units. The stylistic analysis is used to study the stylistic colouring of the analysed language units in certain communicative situations. The pragmatic analysis is used to describe the use of the analysed language units as means to exert a pragmatic effect on the reader. The term “antonomasia” has been defined as a stylistic device in which a proper name is used instead of a common noun or vice versa. Antonomasia has been classified into usual and occasional. It has been researched that in the novels by Charlotte Bingham usual antonomasia is mainly represented by language units whose nominative meaning and stylistic potential are completely annihilated (67,1%); language units with partially annihilated nominative meaning are less frequent (32,9%). It has been substantiated that in the researched novels language units of the latter class perform informative and characterological functions. It has been revealed that in the novels by Charlotte Bingham occasional antonomasia is chiefly represented by nicknames and diminutive names (65,5%), while speaking names (23,2%) and occasional antonomasia proper (11,3%) are less frequent. It has been ascertained that in the novels by Charlotte Bingham occasional antonomasia is used to express the author’s subjectivity, perform informative and characterological functions, make readers feel emotion, exert a certain stylistic effect.

Abstract:
This chapter considers Elliott Carter’s Of Challenge and of Love. This substantial and impressive cycle shows stylistic consistency in its uncompromising atonality and rhythmic complexity, but it is an immensely satisfying vehicle for a singer and pianist of exceptional skill, stamina, and musicianship. Vocal writing is, by turn, gritty and muscular, exuberant and lyrical. Piano parts are dramatic and often texturally intricate, but there are plenty of ‘windows’ to allow the voice to come through. Carter is fond of the device of ‘metric modulation’ and there are several examples here. He obviously relishes the mathematical and proportional aspects of rhythm, and frequently ties notes across beats, promoting elasticity and freedom. The music is also enlivened by pungent, accented passages.

Abstract:
This book examines the intricacies of the American film's stylistic remediation of comics. Stylistic remediation refers to the stylistic practice by films (both adaptations of comics and original properties), in which they have increasingly relied on the formal characteristics of comic books (such as panels, speed lines, the dissection of motion, flat compositions). For their part, comics have drawn upon formal devices derived from film (such as the film noir compositional technique of high-contrast lighting and Photoshop assisted motion blurring to produce a more cinematic look). The book explores how stylistic remediation complicates the idea of media specificity, the role of horizontal integration and conglomeration in the process of stylistic remediation, the industrial motivation behind remediation in films and comics, and whether the remediation of comic book stylistics into films is fundamentally a by-product of technologies and an indication of a larger ontological shift from cinema to digital cinema.

Abstract:
This paper aims at analyzing The Interior Castle of St. Teresa of Ávila using a stylistic approach. The Interior Castle was inspired by the author’s vision of the soul as a diamond in the shape of a castle containing seven mansions, which she interpreted as the journey of faith through seven stages, ending with union with God. The stylistic analysis of the chosen text combines intuition and detailed linguistic analysis of the text. The form and style of the text are an integral part of the work’s meaning and value. In our analysis of The Interior Castle, lexical and syntactical expressive means and stylistic devices are discussed in order to explore the figurative meanings of the language employed.

The article examines the linguistic particularities of defense in judicial rhetoric that have not considerably changed since Antiquity. As at present the interest in judicial rhetoric has increased, it is necessary to carry out its comprehensive analysis with the consideration of its modern modifications. In the course of history, judicial rhetoric has preserved its main rules to be used in Modern Times by Western culture advocates for defense purposes. Special attention is paid to stylistic devices, phonetic means and linguistic features to discern that are most frequently used by the advocates in their defense speeches. As stylistic devices are the best means of persuasion of the jurors and public in court, they are indispensable in advocates’ defense speeches and are the focus of the given paper. As the advocates’ defense speeches concentrate mainly on persuasion and thus with emotions rather than reason the author focuses on the expressive language means.
