Abstract:
The article analyzes the concept of “stylistic competence”, which is defined as the ability to learn the stylistic system of the language at the phonetic, lexical-semantic, phraseological and grammatical levels. The main concepts of stylistics have been clarified. The object and subject of studying stylistics have been characterized. Such sections of stylistics as stylistics of language, stylistics of speech and stylistics of fiction have been studied. The concept of “language style” and “speech style” has been distinguished. The problem of compliance with stylistic norms and features of formation of stylistic abilities and skills has been outlined. The linguistic-didactic system for the formation of students’ stylistic competence has been defined, which includes: approaches to learning (functional-stylistic, which ensures effective work on the representation of the features of the functioning of language units, their implementation in each style; the formation of fluency in speaking skills), learning patterns (patterns of language learning and patterns of speech learning); teaching principles (general didactic and linguistic didactic); groups of exercises (according to the content of the main material, according to the method of execution) and specific methods (observation of stylistic functions of language units, stylistic experiment; stylistic editing; stylistic construction).

Abstract:
This paper examines the theoretical foundations of stylistic analysis, underlining its conceptual orientation and linguistic characteristics. As a subfield of linguistics, stylistics studies how (and why) language use varies according to different contexts (with a focus on phonetic, lexical, grammatical, semantic, and pragmatic features). It discusses the main approaches to stylistic analysis: formalist, functional, cognitive, and corpus stylistics. It also emphasizes typing style devices like alliteration, metaphor, and irony, forming the meaning of the text and the perception of the reader. These investigations highlight the relevance of stylistic investigation in both literary and non-literary discourse and show how such work can uncover abstract linguistic and communicative functions.

Abstract:
We analyze the particular functions of such metaphors as synesthesia and personification in a literary text. The purpose of study is to identify the stylistic potential of synesthesia and personification in a literary text. The relevance of topic is due to the need to investigate the stylistic functions of the above metaphors in the prose of Austrian authors, little-known and therefore insufficiently researched in domestic stylistics. The material of research is the prose of Austrian authors. In particular, the intentional selection of works created at different times allowed to better focus on metaphors featured by structures and functions. We explore the stylistic potential of metaphors, which is understood as the ability of these linguistic means to implement certain stylistic functions. We conclude as follows: 1) the language of Austrian writers of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries is characterized by metaphors that make up the aesthetic value of their works; 2) an important role in achieving the figurativeness of a literary text is played by the expressive means of the language, in particular, synesthesia and personification; 3) these varieties of metaphor have sufficient stylistic potential to implement the main functions in the artistic style, namely, characterological, descriptive, emotive and evaluative; 4) the metaphor is characterized by multifunctionality, which makes it possible to combine the description with the tasks of characterization, expression and evaluation. The data obtained constitute the theoretical significance of study and as well can be used in teaching philology students.

Stylistic Features of Metonymy in English and Azerbaijani Languages Summary This article is devoted to the study of the stylistic features of metonymy in English and Azerbaijani. Theoretical materials and literary texts from linguistics in both English and Azerbaijani are used to provide a basis for comparison. The similarities between metonymic models in both languages allow us to conclude that their stylistic formations and functions within the language of literary texts are similar. They often coincide completely. The stylistic weight of metonymy serves as an indicator of an author’s unique style, as it makes the language in fiction texts imaginative and aesthetically pleasing. Abstract:
This article is devoted to the study of stylistic functions of metaphorical epithets in a poetic text. Many works are devoted to metaphor, which apparently occupies the main place among the linguistic means of expressing images. However, the question of the stylistic functions of metaphorical epithets is still not fully clarified. One of the laws of language development is manifested in the metaphorization of words, but the metaphorical meaning of a word is manifested only in context, thanks to the movement of the word into a new lexical environment. According to the established scientific tradition, it is customary to distinguish between general-language and individual-author metaphorization, while the functions of general-language and individual-author (poetic) metaphors are different: through general-language metaphorization, first of all, the expansion of the meaning of a word is achieved; in a poetic text, a metaphor gives a condensed characteristic of a particular subject, often claiming to penetrate into its essence, and it is aimed at revealing his individuality. The quality of metaphorical formations is also influenced by the genre in which the literary work is created. Depending on the genre and style of the work, there are not only techniques, but also means of metaphorization. Artistic methods also impose a certain seal on metaphorization. Analysis of metaphorical epithets in the light of the stated general provisions on metaphor and the essence of metaphorization based on the poems of A.S. Pushkin "The Caucasian Prisoner", M.Y. Lermontov "Mtsyri", I.S. Nikitin "Kulak" and N.A. Nekrasov's "Frost, Red Nose" showed that metaphorical epithets can be created by qualitative and relative adjectives. At the same time, common-language metaphorical epithets most often represent stable expressions of a living spoken language and thus indicate the nationality of the language, emphasize the national specifics of the works. In the creation of individual metaphorical epithets, the innovation of poets in the field of metaphorical creativity is clearly manifested, and a significant increase in the proportion of evaluative metaphorical epithets in the poems of Nikitin and Nekrasov, compared with the poems of Pushkin and Lermontov, is an undeniable consequence of their social orientation.

Abstract:
Great design is often the result of intelligent balancing of tradeoffs and leveraging of synergies between multiple product goals. While the engineering design community has numerous tools for managing the interface between functional goals in products, there are currently no formalized methods to concurrently manage stylistic form and functional requirements. The purpose of the work in this dissertation is to formalize ways to coordinate seemingly disparate but highly related goals of stylistic form and functional constraints in both computational design and for human designers. This work aims to provide a cohesive framework where both computational and cognitive findings are brought together to mutually inform and inspire the design process. First, this problem was approached computationally with the development of an Artificial Neural Network based machine learning system that allows consumer judgments of stylistic form to be modeled quantitatively. Coupling this quantitative model of stylistic form with a Genetic Algorithm enables computers to concurrently account for multiple objectives in the domains of stylistic form and function within the same quantitative framework. This coupling then opens the door for computers to automatically generate products that not only work well, but also look good doing it. Second, this problem was approached cognitively to explore ways to help human designers manage different goals of stylistic form and function more efficiently and effectively. An experiment was conducted which suggests that designers may sometimes have trouble fully utilizing knowledge they already have for managing different goals in design problems. This experiment shows evidence that analogical inspiration can help designers to overcome this knowledge block to more intelligently balance tradeoffs and leverage synergies in engineering design.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD dissertation is devoted to the study of neologisms from the perspective of their communicative function. In particular, it reviews the concepts denominative neology and stylistic neology, which make up the classification most widely used to sort neologisms according to their function. However, this classification has received criticism regarding the features used to characterise both types of neologisms, their representation as opposing categories and the exclusion or subordination of other functions of neologisms. For this reason, our goal is to study the concepts used to characterise neologisms from the point of view of their function, which include linguistic and extra-linguistic aspects such as functional, sociolinguistic, discursive and pragmatic features. As a result, we have designed a methodological proposal in order to identify prototypical neologisms with either denominative or stylistic values, with both values, or with neither. The results of the analysis show that, on the one hand, the isolated criteria complement each other and they help to characterise a group of neologisms according to their function and, on the other hand, we can see that these two categories are not opposing and they are not enough to explain this phenomenon

Full text
Abstract:
The ancient Egyptians portrayed themselves as more than adept at preparing and executing a battle plan and this is clearly shown in the archaeological and textual record. There is, however, a tendency by the Egyptians to oversimplify the nature of battle, depicting an idealisation of the real situation, purely focused on the role of the king or the service to the king by an elite individual. This is best portrayed in royal mortuary complexes, such as that of Ramesses III at Medinet Habu, where a series of depictions and associated inscriptions on the walls of the temple display the king fighting the might of the Sea People and Libyan invaders, all but single handedly. In a similar vein high officials, such as Ahmose-Pen-Nekhbet from EI-Kab (Urk IV: 32-39), describe how they contributed to the king's army and how their personal prowess on the battlefield had expanded the borders of Egypt. These texts and depictions are often the subject of modern scholarly analyses (such as Goedicke 1985: Shaw 1996: Spalinger 2005), with the material of the battlefield confined to technological analyses (Shaw 2001), typological assessments (Davies 1987) and general discussions (including Littauer and Crouwe11979: McLeod 1982: Shaw 1991). The capabilities of the weapons themselves are rarely considered to any great degree, largely as a result of most of the weaponry being found in a funerary context, and as a consequence are more readily thought to be ceremonial in function rather than a representation of military activity. In fact some scholars have been actively downplaying the evidence for warfare in the Bronze Age, instead describing weapons as having an almost entirely ceremonial purpose, only occasionally (if at all) being used for fighting. Philip (1989, 2003) and Whittle (1985) in particular focus on the social, religious and ceremonial aspects with Philip (2003: 186) noting that styles and fashions may have been as important as mechanical efficiency. This is especially true for weapons of the elite, who may have had weapons designed for semi-ritualised combat between champions, rather than for largescale battles. These ideas have led to the commonly discussed concept of the 'peaceful savage' though this has become less popular in recent years with Bridgford (1997: 7) considering it to be a result of a misplaced scholarly nicety and Keeley (1996), among others, being keen to move away from this perceived idealisation. Instead more practical assessments of weaponry have emerged, with Hulit (2002), Molloy (2007) and Peatfield (2007) attempting to determine how effective their respective weapons were as fighting instruments. These analyses very much return to the concepts established by Yadin (1963) who established a function-efficiency focused model, with civilisations developing weapons on the basis of whom they were fighting and the capacity of these artefacts to demonstrate their ability to successfully attack their enemies. It is certainly true that some weapons would have been status symbols, others used for hunting, and possibly worn for ceremonial purposes, but to what degree distinctions were made between a fighting weapon and a ceremonial one is unclear. Were they the same thing or was a specially produced version utilised in 'ritualised warfare'? To what extent these ideas have merit are the subject of this thesis. Studying weapons from Bronze Age Egypt and the Near East the production and design of individual weapons will be considered in the context of function and use within the ancient culture. Chemical analysis and a metallographic study of a number of weapons will be utilised to determine how these weapons were produced, why certain styles were utilised, and whether these weapons were merely religious and social representations of masculinity or whether they had the capability to be successfully used in a battle.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the register of television sports announcers in Major League Soccer broadcasts, based on six 20-minute transcription samples. The first part considers individual linguistic features and inquires whether they fulfill a communicative function or whether they are of stylistic nature. In an effort to attract more viewers in the United States, production companies had originally adopted the duality model of a play-by-play announcer and a color commentary from other American sports, while many other countries traditionally feature only one commentator. Consequently, the second part of this discourse analysis will focus on the cooperative interactional behavior. The conclusion will be drawn that the register of live action announcing, in contrast to halftime as well as pre- and post-game reporting, is based on cooperative principles. Moreover, both the individual and the collaborative linguistic variables mostly reflect an effort to protect one’s own and the colleague’s public image.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the relationship of the lament topic to various form-functional contexts. After explaining that this topic is inextricably linked with a schema defined essentially by its bass voice, the study considers how the intrinsically sequential harmonic content of the schema lends itself well to expressing the formal sense of “being in the middle.” It further demonstrates that the schema can also participate in creating a formal ending, a cadence, and can even be used in an initiating formal context, which may engender the perception of a “formal dissonance,” a conflict between intrinsic and contextual functionality. The pervasive descending bass line of the lament schema, while appropriate for baroque compositional practice, jars somewhat with classical practice, such that the lament topic becomes a touchstone for highlighting stylistic differences among earlier and later works within the eighteenth century.

Abstract:
The study examines the figura etymologica, particularly the tautological infinitive, in Semitic and Yiddish. It evaluates whether this linguistic phenomenon arises from loan translation, as with Semitic influence on Jewish languages, or through independent development across languages. Examples from classical Semitic languages, like Akkadian, Arabic, and Hebrew, as well as Yiddish, German dialects, and Indo-European languages, illustrate the construction’s versatility. While the tautological infinitive often emphasises intensity or stylistic reinforcement, it also serves other discourse functions. In Yiddish, arguments for Semitic origin, especially through Hebrew influence, compete with claims for an autochthonous development rooted in Germanic dialects and broader typological trends. The analysis supports a hybrid understanding, recognising both external influences and independent emergence within Yiddish and other languages.

Abstract:
This paper reports on data from a questionnaire survey conducted in a target group of students in doctoral study programs in the disciplines of product/industrial design, photography, and audio-visual studies. The survey aimed at subjective language needs and wants in the knowledge of specific lexis, choice of grammatical tense, lexical bundles, use of verbs in the passive voice, and appropriate choice of formal register, structure, and inner text organisation. The survey measured the level of confidence when identifying selected language means of style and their rhetoric functions in the genre of an academic journal article. The data indicate the language needs of the respondents to become more familiar with the wording of statements and the question of choosing appropriate stylistic language means. The knowledge gained can be applied in the creation of materials for teaching academic writing.

Abstract:
Such a specific element of political communication as a slogan, which is often used within the election campaign, has been to the present day a less studied issue in the Russian and Kazakh political linguistics. Nowadays this genre of political text is being mainly mastered by the sociologists, politologists, image-makers, etc., dealing with the issues of electoral technologies. This article deals with the study of stylistic features of a political slogan which are characteristic for the election campaigns of Russia and Kazakhstan held in the period of recent decades. The results of the study show that the main purpose of their use is to enhance the expressiveness of the statement. This allows us to conclude that the language of political slogans has great opportunities and resources to implement this impact. It also becomes apparent that persuasiveness is one of the key functions of the slogan's pragmatic functions.

Abstract:
In connection with the distance of man from nature, the issues of landscaping, both open spaces and interiors, have become particularly relevant in the XXI century. One of the signature of a modern metropolis is a multi-purpose shopping and entertainment centers (SEC) and complexes (SEC). Every day, the shopping center is visited by hundreds of people of almost all age groups. A well-planned interior and a comfortable environment directly affect the number of visitors and their purchasing power. The most important condition for the comfort of the interior is a phytodesign. Plant compositions in shopping centers make the space attractive and cozy. Staying in green areas does not cause oversaturation and fatigue, allowing the eye to rest in a timely manner. The paper presents the results of studying the features of landscaping of the interiors of the shopping center of the city of Voronezh. Stylistic solutions, the range and condition of the plants used are analyzed. Currently, artificial plants are used in the interiors of most of the shopping centers of our city, which only partially perform the functions of phytodesign. At the same time, stylistic and compositional solutions differ in relative monotony. The implementation of the project of landscaping the interiors of the shopping center with the use of live plants should be preceded by pre-project studies, including the definition of the style and microclimatic parameters of the room (illumination, temperature and relative humidity), identification of the features of the flow of visitors, as well as zoning of the territory.

Abstract:
Stylistics can be considered as a field of study that crosses text theory, linguistics, and journalism. Although different schools create different approaches to stylistics, each stylistic approach will include in its paradigm some basic factors, such as the reader and the author. This article shows how these factors interact with each other and, ultimately, create the basis for the emergence of a new field in Ukrainian journalism – interactive stylistics. The study is devoted to interactive stylistics, which is considering as a field based on the text’s own pragmatic potential in the context of modern humanities methodology. This discipline acquires a new function: to observe and interpretively explain, firstly, the meaning of interactions between agents (author and recipient) in communication, mediated by the media text, and, secondly, the effect that this interaction brings. At the center of interactive stylistics is the author (journalist), who through the text discusses the content of interactions in relation to his own interests, as well as cultural, social and historical contracts with the reader. The meaning of the expressions used and the general meaning of such interactions arises in the context of communication events, based on the perception of the subjects of communication with the surrounding reality through the assimilation and adequate interpretation of new information. In modern Ukrainian science of communication, the study of interactive stylistics acquires significant potential. It profiles itself in the context of interdisciplinarity and aims to explore interactivity, interpretability, as well as intertextuality (in specific media texts or interdiscourse dialogue). Interactive stylistics is able to meet the needs of communicators as a useful source of instructions on how communication subjects interact and has a chance to achieve success both at the domestic and international scientific level. Due to its scientific perspective of applying the above-mentioned methodology, it is harmoniously integrated among the tendentious linguistic and broader social science and humanitarian disciplines in Ukrainian scientific research or in the wider international context. Abstract:
The article explores the key vocabulary of 2020 in the network space of Ukraine. Texts of journalistic, official-business style, analytical publications of well-known journalists on current topics are analyzed. Extralinguistic factors of new word formation, their adaptation to the sphere of special and socio-political vocabulary of the Ukrainian language are determined. Examples show modern impressions in the media, their stylistic use and impact on public opinion in a pandemic. New meanings of foreign expressions, media terminology, peculiarities of translation of neologisms from English into Ukrainian have been clarified. According to the materials of the online media, a «dictionary of the coronavirus era» is provided. The journalistic text functions in the media on the basis of logical judgments, credible arguments, impressive language. Its purpose is to show the socio-political problem, to sharpen its significance for society and to propose solutions through convincing considerations. Most researchers emphasize the influential role of journalistic style, which through the media shapes public opinion on issues of politics, economics, education, health care, war, the future of the country. To cover such a wide range of topics, socio-political vocabulary is used first of all – neutral and emotionally-evaluative, rhetorical questions and imperatives, special terminology, foreign words. There is an ongoing discussion in online publications about the use of the new foreign token «lockdown» instead of the word «quarantine», which has long been learned in the Ukrainian language. Research on this topic has shown that at the initial stage of the pandemic, the word «lockdown» prevailed in the colloquial language of politicians, media personalities and part of society did not quite understand its meaning. Lockdown, in its current interpretation, is a restrictive measure to protect people from a dangerous virus that has spread to many countries; isolation of the population («stay in place») in case of risk of spreading Covid-19. In English, US citizens are told what a lockdown is: «A lockdown is a restriction policy for people or communities to stay where they are, usually due to specific risks to themselves or to others if they can move and interact freely. The term «stay-at-home» or «shelter-in-place» is often used for lockdowns that affect an area, rather than specific locations». Content analysis of online texts leads to the conclusion that in 2020 a special vocabulary was actively functioning, with the appropriate definitions, which the media described as a «dictionary of coronavirus vocabulary». Media broadcasting is the deepest and pulsating source of creative texts with new meanings, phrases, expressiveness. The influential power of the word finds its unconditional embodiment in the media. Journalists, bloggers, experts, politicians, analyzing current events, produce concepts of a new reality. The world is changing and the language of the media is responding to these changes. It manifests itself most vividly and emotionally in the network sphere, in various genres and styles.

Abstract:
The article investigates functional techniques of extralinguistic expression in multimedia texts; the effectiveness of figurative expressions as a reaction to modern events in Ukraine and their influence on the formation of public opinion is shown. Publications of journalists, broadcasts of media resonators, experts, public figures, politicians, readers are analyzed. The language of the media plays a key role in shaping the worldview of the young political elite in the first place. The essence of each statement is a focused thought that reacts to events in the world or in one’s own country. The most popular platform for mass information and social interaction is, first of all, network journalism, which is characterized by mobility and unlimited time and space. Authors have complete freedom to express their views in direct language, including their own word formation. Phonetic, lexical, phraseological and stylistic means of speech create expression of the text. A figurative word, a good aphorism or proverb, a paraphrased expression, etc. enhance the effectiveness of a multimedia text. This is especially important for headlines that simultaneously inform and influence the views of millions of readers. Given the wide range of issues raised by the Internet as a medium, research in this area is interdisciplinary. The science of information, combining language and social communication, is at the forefront of global interactions. The Internet is an effective source of knowledge and a forum for free thought. Nonlinear texts (hypertexts) – «branching texts or texts that perform actions on request», multimedia texts change the principles of information collection, storage and dissemination, involving billions of readers in the discussion of global issues. Mastering the word is not an easy task if the author of the publication is not well-read, is not deep in the topic, does not know the psychology of the audience for which he writes. Therefore, the study of media broadcasting is an important component of the professional training of future journalists. The functions of the language of the media require the authors to make the right statements and convincing arguments in the text. Journalism education is not only knowledge of imperative and dispositive norms, but also apodictic ones. In practice, this means that there are rules in media creativity that are based on logical necessity. Apodicticity is the first sign of impressive language on the platform of print or electronic media. Social expression is a combination of creative abilities and linguistic competencies that a journalist realizes in his activity. Creative self-expression is realized in a set of many important factors in the media: the choice of topic, convincing arguments, logical presentation of ideas and deep philological education. Linguistic art, in contrast to painting, music, sculpture, accumulates all visual, auditory, tactile and empathic sensations in a universal sign – the word. The choice of the word for the reproduction of sensory and semantic meanings, its competent use in the appropriate context distinguishes the journalist-intellectual from other participants in forums, round tables, analytical or entertainment programs. Expressive speech in the media is a product of the intellect (ability to think) of all those who write on socio-political or economic topics. In the same plane with him – intelligence (awareness, prudence), the first sign of which (according to Ivan Ogienko) is a good knowledge of the language. Intellectual language is an important means of organizing a journalistic text. It, on the one hand, logically conveys the author’s thoughts, and on the other – encourages the reader to reflect and comprehend what is read. The richness of language is accumulated through continuous self-education and interesting communication. Studies of social expression as an important factor influencing the formation of public consciousness should open up new facets of rational and emotional media broadcasting; to trace physical and psychological reactions to communicative mimicry in the media. Speech mimicry as one of the methods of disguise is increasingly becoming a dangerous factor in manipulating the media. Mimicry is an unprincipled adaptation to the surrounding social conditions; one of the most famous examples of an animal characterized by mimicry (change of protective color and shape) is a chameleon. In a figurative sense, chameleons are called adaptive journalists. Observations show that mimicry in politics is to some extent a kind of game that, like every game, is always conditional and artificial.

Yatsymirska, Mariya. MODERN MEDIA TEXT: POLITICAL NARRATIVES, MEANINGS AND SENSES, EMOTIONAL MARKERS. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11411.

Abstract:
The article examines modern media texts in the field of political journalism; the role of information narratives and emotional markers in media doctrine is clarified; verbal expression of rational meanings in the articles of famous Ukrainian analysts is shown. Popular theories of emotions in the process of cognition are considered, their relationship with the author’s personality, reader psychology and gonzo journalism is shown. Since the media text, in contrast to the text, is a product of social communication, the main narrative is information with the intention of influencing public opinion. Media text implies the presence of the author as a creator of meanings. In addition, media texts have universal features: word, sound, visuality (stills, photos, videos). They are traditionally divided into radio, TV, newspaper and Internet texts. The concepts of multimedia and hypertext are related to online texts. Web combinations, especially in political journalism, have intensified the interactive branching of nonlinear texts that cannot be published in traditional media. The Internet as a medium has created the conditions for the exchange of ideas in the most emotional way. Hence Gonzo’s interest in journalism, which expresses impressions of certain events in words and epithets, regardless of their stylistic affiliation. There are many such examples on social media in connection with the events surrounding the Wagnerians, the Poroshenko case, Russia’s new aggression against Ukraine, and others. Thus, the study of new features of media text in the context of modern political narratives and emotional markers is important in media research. The article focuses review of etymology, origin and features of using lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” in linguistic practice of Ukrainians results in the development of meanings and functional stylistic coloring in the usage of these units. Lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” are used as synonyms, but there are specific fields of meanings where they cannot be interchanged: lexeme “сенс (sense)” should be used when it comes to reasonable grounds for something, lexeme “cмисл (meaning)” should be used when it comes to notion, concept, understanding. Modern political texts are most prominent in genres such as interviews with politicians, political commentaries, analytical articles by media experts and journalists, political reviews, political portraits, political talk shows, and conversations about recent events, accompanied by effective emotional narratives. Etymologically, the concept of “narrative” is associated with the Latin adjective “gnarus” – expert. Speakers, philosophers, and literary critics considered narrative an “example of the human mind.” In modern media texts it is not only “story”, “explanation”, “message techniques”, “chronological reproduction of events”, but first of all the semantic load and what subjective meanings the author voices; it is a process of logical presentation of arguments (narration). The highly professional narrator uses narration as a “method of organizing discourse” around facts and impressions, impresses with his political erudition, extraordinary intelligence and creativity. Some of the above theses are reflected in the following illustrations from the Ukrainian media: “Culture outside politics” – a pro-Russian narrative…” (MP Gabibullayeva); “The next will be Russia – in the post-Soviet space is the Arab Spring…” (journalist Vitaly Portnikov); “In Russia, only the collapse of Ukraine will be perceived as success” (Pavel Klimkin); “Our army is fighting, hiding from the leadership” (Yuri Butusov).
