Abstract:
Abstract Over recent years, the use of corpora in stylistic analysis has grown in popularity. However, questions still remain over the remit of corpus stylistics, its distinction from corpus linguistics generally and its capacity to explain complex stylistic effects. This article argues in favour of an integrated corpus stylistics; that is, an approach to corpus stylistics that integrates it with other stylistic methods and analytical frameworks. I suggest that this approach is needed for two main reasons: (i) it is analytically necessary in order to fully explain stylistic effects in texts, and (ii) integrating corpus methods with other stylistic tools is what will distinguish corpus stylistics from corpus linguistics. My argument is supported by reference to examples from Mark Haddon’s no vel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and the HBO TV series Deadwood. Both these examples rely for their explanation on a combination of corpus stylistic analytical techniques and other stylistic methods of analysis.

Abstract:
This paper displays the ideological positioning as found in Rudyard Kipling’s poem If. It is a poem published in 1910. It presents the embedded ideologies and shows how the poet used the available linguistic resources to achieve his goal. The models of analysis adopted are Critical Stylistics as proposed by Lesley Jeffries (2010) and Stylistic Analysis as submitted by McIntyre (2010). The paper aims at identifying the poet’s beliefs to show that success is the outcome of self-control and a real sense of the values of things. It is a try to discover how the poet used various linguistic choices to build a message telling us how to deal with life confidently and identify a line of ideological positioning through Critical Stylistic strategies. The paper presents a theoretical background of the term stylistics and critical stylistics, explaining the adopted models; Analyzing the poem stylistically with a focus on critical stylistic regarding two tools: Representing and Negating for their dominant use in the poem and their effectiveness in interpreting the hidden ideologies. Stylistic devices are used because they steer the text to enable the writer to reach the intended goal. In conclusion, the paper displays that the poet uses the stylistic tools in a brilliant way that leads All, not only his son, to follow and consider it a moral lesson of life.

Abstract:
Critical Stylistics is concerned with the study of ideology in literary and political texts. It draws on certain criteria from the stylistic analysis. Thus, this paper attempts to apply Jeffries’ (2010) model of critical stylistics to soliloquies of Shakespearean Hamlet. It specifically aims at analyzing the two soliloquies made by the character Hamlet using only three textual-conceptual functions of the model: Representing Actions/ Events/ States; Exemplifying and Enumerating; and Hypothesizing. These functions are adopted here because they somehow represent what the character is saying loudly. The data is analyzed qualitatively to show how the tools are used and then quantitatively to show how many times these same tools are used. This paper concludes that Shakespeare’s language is ideologically loaded and there are discrepancies in the frequency and function of these tools. Besides, the frequency of these tools proves how the ideology is enforced through the language of the text.

Abstract:
Bernard Shaw is widely regarded as one of the most important playwrights in the English language, ranking often second only to Shakespeare. This literary prominence, however, is not matched by a significant number of stylistic analyses, much more so in the case of linguistically-oriented ones. One of the few studies in Shaviana with a clear stylistic approach is Ohmann’s (1962) monograph. However, it focuses on Shaw’s non-dramatic writings and, due to its publication date, it does not utilize software tools for corpus stylistics. The purpose of this paper is to analyze Bernard Shaw’s use of certain comparative structures in his dramatic writings (what Ohmann calls ‘Modes of Order’ in his book) with the aid of the technical and methodological advances of computer-based stylistics, thus utilizing an innovative outlook because of the combination of stylistics and corpora research.

Abstract:
Pedagogical stylistics refers to the application of the tools of stylistics in the teaching of the English language as a foreign or a second language. Teaching and learning poetry is challenging. Thus, pedagogical corpus stylistics (Henceforth, PCS) approach has been introduced to Iraqi undergraduate foreign language learners (EFL) to guide them to analyze poetic language. The study aims to make students interact with authentic examples of poetic language and answer questions about it. The main objective of the study is to examine whether PCS tools enable the learners to provide linguistic evidence from the poetic texts they are exposed to. This in turn ensures objective poetic analyses. Moreover, it aims to enable EFL Iraqi students to discover salient norms related to the Standard English language. The study reveals that the pedagogical corpus stylistic approach helps the students to discover language patterns using corpus tools with the help of the teacher’s guidance at the beginning but this eventually leads to independent learning and discoveries about poetic language.

Abstract:
Cognitive stylistics offers a renewed focus on readerly or audience interpretation, but while cognitive stylistic tools have been applied in the investigation of literary texts, their application to TV, film and screen has been more limited. This article examines the cognitive stylistic features of the voiceover narration in the first TV series adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale to explore the representation of June/Offred’s ‘split selves’ and how these are mediated through a prominent ‘filmic composition device’. Through analysis of voiceovers and corresponding production choices in series 1, this study explores, first, how the different modes of communication – both choices of visual production (such as shallow-focus shots) and linguistic features (such as ‘you’ address and container metaphors) – combine to show Offred’s split perspective; and second, how these stylistic elements work to foreground the key themes of the series, such as imprisonment, objectification and surveillance.

Abstract:
Media reports on Niger Delta (Henceforth, ND) conflicts have reflected a relationship between lexico-stylistic choices and media ideologies. The existing media studies on the discourse have predominantly utilised pragmatic, stylistic and discourse analytical tools in presenting and labelling discourse participants and/or their ideologies, but neglected how media ideologies can be revealed through lexico-stylistic choices made in the reports. This paper therefore examines the lexico-stylistic choices in the reports in order to establish their link to specific ideological goals of the newspapers in relaying the conflict news. Forty reports on ND conflicts, published between 2003 and 2007, sampled from two ND-based (The Tide and Pioneer) and two national (The Punch and THISDAY, labelled) newspapers, were subjected to stylistic and critical analyses, with insights from structural (relational) semantics and aspects of stylistics discourse. Two broad lexical stylistic choices are identified, including paradigmatic (61.8%—indexed by synonymous, antonymous, hyponymous, colloquial, and register items, and coinages) and syntagmatic (38.2%—marked by collocations, metaphors, pleonasms, and lexical fields) features. The features are utilised for three ideological ends; namely, picking out and framing participants as perpetrators of the violence in the discourse, evaluating specific entities and their roles in the conflicts, and reducing the impact of the activities of the news actors. Although there are overlaps, the evaluative ideology is largely associated with the national newspaper, the impact reduction ideology with the ND-based newspapers, while the framist ideology is observed in the two sets of newspapers. With these findings the study has added the lexical stylistics angle to the existing scholarship on ND conflict news discourse. Thus, the newspaper reports on ND conflicts are motivated by their ideological goals to change the reader’s outlook on the issues relating to the conflicts.

Abstract This perspective paper discusses four general desiderata of current computational stylistics and (neuro-)cognitive poetics concerning the development of (a) appropriate databases/training corpora, (b) advanced qualitative-quantitative narrative analysis (Q2NA) and machine learning tools for feature extraction, (c) ecologically valid literary test materials, and (d) open-access reader-response data banks. In six explorative computational stylistics studies, it introduces a number of tools that provide QNA indices of the foregrounding potential at the sublexical, lexical, inter- and supralexical levels for poems by Shakespeare, Blake, or Dickens. These concern lexical diversity and aesthetic potential, sentiment analysis, sublexical sonority scores or phrase structure, and topics analysis. The results illustrate the complex interplay of stylistic features and the necessity for theoretical guidance and interdisciplinary cooperation in selecting adequate training corpora, QNA tools, test texts, and response measures.

Abstract:
Ideologies can be traced back and extracted through formal aspect of language where the authors’ choices reflect the world view they construct in order to influence their receptors. This study aims at extracting ideologies of war in war poetry relying upon the model of critical stylistics proposed by Leslie Jeffries (2010). The model presents ten textual-conceptual tools of analysis; one of which, ‘negating’, has been adopted as a tool of analysis in this paper to extract the hidden ideologies. The study came to the conclusion that the textual conceptual tool of analysis, negating, as a formal textual aspect guides into manifesting the hidden ideologies of the text producer about war and this is achieved through creating a virtual positive world in receptor’s mind to be juxtaposed with the actual negated world in order to build expectations.

Abstract:
This research studies Egypt in a selected sample of poems of modern Sudanese poetry. The study used the textual method to analyze stylistic and technical aspects of the poems chosen for this study. Sudanese poets have different views of Egypt based on their culture and psychological makeup and literary approach. Some poets had a simple vision despite their elevated diction, artificial rhetoric, and lifeless pathos; others had a more complex vision especially those who saw in Egypt the central state, with its science, history and civilization, and the ability to move the Arabs to wider horizons. The conservative poets relied heavily on stylistics and symbolic language expressions and intensified their structural formulations to meet the public’s tastes for clamor. Some used modern techniques like the narration, storytelling, and the internal monologue to express their visions. It was found that most texts analyzed in this study used the Khalili prosodics with the exception of a few new direction poets who used free verse to express themselves with smooth musicality without barriers as long as their poetry was fueled with profound passion, proper conscience, and a sense of simplicity. The Sudanese poet did not get rid of his old presentation of the image considering it a means for explanation, clarification, and extreme exaggeration. The image, therefore, appeared to be sensual and largely an imitation of ancient types. This, however, does not prevent the emergence of new forms.

This paper aims at analyzing Shadad Zeest Hashmi’s poem ‘You are chained’ with a special focus on the foreground. The tools of foregrounding i.e. parallelism and deviation are surfaced that attract the attention of the reader for hidden messages related to the socio-political scenario of Pakistan, Kashmir, and India. Thus the miserable plight of the Kashmiris is encompassed through stylistic devices which are peculiar to Hashmi’s poetry. Foregrounding is the tool through which one can analyze a piece of literature having so many deviations and code-switching. The main aim of the study is to bring to the fore the local poets writing in English. The research is based on this intention to strike the attention of new researchers to criticize as well as to appreciate our local poets for their encouragement. Abstract:
AbstractCognitive stylistics provides a framework for analysis of conceptual metaphors in literature, as a way to approach fictional characters’ mind styles. Here, cognitive linguistic tools are applied to characterize the metaphorical expressions of emotion in James Joyce’s A portrait of the artist as a young man. A number of conceptual metaphors were identified in relation to anger, lust, shame, pride, fear, happiness and sadness, among others. Creative uses of language came to light, both by means of novel conceptual mappings and original linguistic realizations of more conventional metaphors. Original expressions revealed aspects of mind style of the novel’s main character, particularly in relation to his struggle with negative emotions. For example, anger and resentment are conceptualized as a sort of covering that could be effortlessly detached from the body, while shame-related feelings are experienced as threatening floods. From a methodological perspective, this study illustrates the advantages of cognitive stylistic tools for the analysis of literary work.

This paper seeks to examine whether corpus stylistics can be helpful in analyzing a single poem 2. Verifying the importance of corpus tools in interpreting poetic language. Moreover, this study attempts to examine key semantic domains, keywords, and concordances in the poem. This study proves that corpus tools are crucial in matters of saving time, reaching to accurate results and achieving much more objectivity than applying only the qualitative method in analyzing the data. Thus, it is recommended to integrate both methodologies (qualitative and quantitative) in the study of poetic language.

We considered methods of teaching Russian language and literature. To satisfy the student's desire for creativity we used various forms of work on editing, correcting texts on each lesson. We paid much attention to the study of vocabulary and stylistics. Practical stylistics considers ways to best use of speech tools. We gave the concept of “school” stylistics. We gave examples that give a rich material for stylistic analysis. We placed the emphasis on the fact that the artistic style differs from other styles of the Russian language primarily by a special aesthetic function. If spoken speech performs a communicative function – the function of direct communication, scientific and official business – an informative function – the function of communication (scientific or business), then the artistic style performs an aesthetic function, the function of an emotional-like influence on the reader or listener. Esthetic function defines fiction language, focuses attention on how ordinary words, used in everyday life, having been included in the poem, the story or the novel, get a special poetic charm, charm, depth for some reason.

Abstract:
The present study applies some of the approaches used in corpus stylistics to examine repetition in John Irving’s novel A Widow for One Year and its translations into Czech and Finnish. The main aim of this case study is to explore whether systematic identification of repetitive textual features in a source language may be a beneficial procedure for translators of literary texts. The underlying assumption is that, in their complexity, not all repetitive features are necessarily easily noticeable. Repetitiveness here is identified with cluster and keyword analysis that are subsequently considered in synergy. Relevant translation solutions are examined. Though repetition plays a central role in the novel, translators show a marked stylistic strategy to avoid them. The results of the study suggest that application of corpus tools may help translators to uncover the structure of the text and keep their translation consistent.

There have been multiple studies on traditional African songs. Such studies have engaged traditional African songs mostly from the non-linguistic perspectives. Such studies have investigated the historical and philosophical values of Yorùbá songs. Studies on songs rendered in dialects of Yorùbá language are very scanty. Dearth of studies in this regard has prevented the propagation and documentation of dialects of Yorùbá language. This study examines the discourse stylistic import of the sociocultural values in Seun Ògúnfìdítìmí’s songs with the view to describing how contextual issues are negotiated in her songs. Recorded songs of Ògúnfìdítìmí constitute the data for the study. The audio compact discs of her songs were collected and played repeatedly. The songs were transcribed and translated into the English language. The translation process took the form of one-to[1]one translation in order to avoid distortion of meaning. The artiste resorts to the use of discourse analytical tools in creating her lyrics. The songs reflect political, social, cultural and religious ideals of the Yorùbá traditional African society. The contextual issues expressed in the songs include the importance attached to the child as success indicator, the significance of marriage, love, conspiracy and the place of detractors, corruption and embezzlement, 184 Temidayo Akinrinlola supremacy of God, social degeneration, gender inequality and the cyclical nature of life. Abstract:
The present research explores the choice of adjectives as a lexical category in Mohsin Hamid’s novel, How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by using Leech and Short model (1981). An empirical enquiry is carried out to trace the author’s choice of adjectives and their intended functions by subjecting How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia to stylistic analysis and linguistic scrutiny. The various functions of adjectives are interpreted after the text is subjected to close reading for their contextual occurrence where they are carefully engraved by the author. The resultant functions throw ample light on the life, culture, economic scenario and love and gender relations construed in the text through adjectives. The present paper, however, is limited only to the interpretation of the adjective categories based on the model suggested by Leech & Short (1981). This study is, therefore, instrumental in initiating a voyage to interpret literary language via linguistic tools and evidences contributing amply to the field of stylistics as well as literary criticism.

Abstract:
Writing academic texts in English introduces certain difficulties associated with translating Russian sentences with pronounced stylistic peculiarities, especially for young researchers who are just starting their publication activity. It seems impossible to study any genre without analysing examples of the discourse, which highlights the use of computational linguistics as it allows automating a lot of language and text processing mechanisms and generates relatively accurate quantitative results. The present study considers the application of AntConc and Coh-Metrix toolkits for analyzing master students’ abstracts to research papers written for international English-language journals or conference proceedings (Learner Corpus) in comparison with international researchers’ abstracts published in high-impact journals (Reference Corpus). The analysis conducted in the above-mentioned software tools revealed the drawbacks and strengths of master students’ texts, allowed characterizing them on the words, sentence and discourse levels, as well as outlined the potentials of their use in teaching academic writing skills.

Introduction. In the languages of the peoples of the world, particles with their own logical-grammatical, semantic-stylistic features and functions, historical development and pragmatic features have an independent place as one of the auxiliary words. Although they do not have a separate lexical meaning, they are among the categories that provide a linguistic and speech relationship in terms of their ability to connect equally to each other by adding different meanings to words and sentences at the syntactic levels. The comparative study of particles within different systematic languages plays an important role in understanding and expressing objective reality through language tools. Research methods. Methods of linguistic description, classification, contextual, comparative and stylistic analysis can be used as research methods. Results and discussions.

Abstract:
In modern media, materials which are characterized by skillful organization of language tools to reveal the topic and focus on the recipient, are highly valued. Having professional journalistic skills and a thorough knowledge of the language helps to create texts according to such requirements. Actual in this context is the formation of skills in the years of study related to the observation of the linguistic and stylistic skills of practicing journalists. The purpose of the article is to present the sequence and example of linguistic-stylistic analysis of a journalistic text to clarify the place and role of word-forming and morphological means that form the semantic background and communicative orientation of the message. Methodological bases of linguistic and stylistic analysis of word-forming and morphological means are a set of approaches that take into account: selection of the publication according to certain criteria (relevance of the topic, genre, authorship, etc.); the structure of tokens and grammatical features of individual parts of speech that create the semantic and stylistic expressiveness of a particular journalistic text. Among the research methods are linguistic analysis, compositional-textual and functional-semantic analysis, the method of establishing semantic-functional paradigms, the quantitative method, and others. Results of the research. A linguistic and stylistic analysis of O. Suprunenko’s publication «Chym Pakhne Yevropa» («What does Europe smell like?») (Post-Postup. 2008) demonstrates the course of consideration of word-forming and part-of-speech means of a professional text; shows a way of coherent and consistent presentation of their own observations and opinions. In the analyzed text there is objective information, which includes specific names, words with direct meaning, construction terminology, quotes. Subjective information is the author’s reasoning about the topic covered. The tone of its disclosure is informative and skeptical, which aims to provoke a corresponding reaction from the reader. Stylistic originality of the presentation of the theme is manifested in the use of appropriate linguistic and stylistic means: individual innovations, the expressive potential of grammatical categories of nouns, adjectives, verbs, as well as in the creation of ironic imagery. Stylistic analysis of the text by language levels is an effective means of forming language and speech competence, as it develops the skills of identifying stylistic means in the text and determining their functions to reveal the author’s intention. This form of work also has a research and creative purpose, as it encourages careful study of the stylistic potential of certain means of speech and independently explain their feasibility in a particular text.

Abstract:
The aim is to explore the key concepts of stylistics of Ukrainian fine arts, architecture and various types of design of the second half of the XIX – early XXI centuries in the relationship of individual fields of knowledge. Research methods – hermeneutic, axiological, historical-genetic, historical-chronological, comparative, culturological, formal-stylistic, art analysis. The selected tools allow you to compare the stylistic features of different types of design (industrial, graphic, clothing, environment), fine arts and architecture. A novelty is an overview of evolutionary processes in terms of styles in painting, graphics, architecture, various types of design activities (in particular, environmental design, industrial, graphic, clothing). The points of intersection of the conceptual and categorical sphere of the indicated branches of creativity are outlined, both common and different tendencies concerning the identification of stylistic features are observed. Conclusions. The differences of separate branches of knowledge of artistic creativity and common features of some types of design-designing, -construction, -modeling, art technologies bordering on graphic art and painting (graphic design, partly industrial design), architecture (environmental design and partly industrial design) are traced. Since the era of modernism, art deco, avant-garde, constructivism, functionalism, Stalin’s empire, which affected all forms of artistic activity, in the late twentieth – early twenty-first century established the classic, minimalism, high-tech, fusion, low-tech, shabby chic, provence, glamour, some oriental stylizations in the interior associated with architecture. Instead, clothing design, in addition to the classics, over the past few decades has creatively adapted the sports-classic style, manga, country, western, boho, military, glamour and etc. over the past few decades. If the shapes of the silhouettes of the cut look at the general tendencies of industrial design, the drawings of fabrics partially appeal to the visions of graphic design, which are related to the tendencies of fine arts – tendencies of modernism, avant-garde, postmodernism. Namely, they tend to functionalism, constructivism, boychukism, art deco, socialist realism, Stalinist empire, Ukrainian soviet empire, neo-functionalism, neo-primitivism, neo-folk style, polystylism, glamour.

As the analysis will try to show, the peculiar features of this text and its complex communicative strategies call for a wider variety of methodological tools, complementing the application of code-driven models for the analysis of modality with more use-driven pragmatic and stylistic frameworks. In Coppes text, textual and contextual elements are as fundamental as code and grammatical aspects to convey evaluation, and they trigger a very sly conflict between overt and covert meanings, producing interstitial, ironical, even subversive reading possibilities, thus demonstrating how modality is inextricably tied to a variety of linguistic devices to produce a multifaceted message.

Abstract:
Abstract Apart from the stylistic and cognitive studies which have already been done separately on Miller’s The Crucible, this paper provides a new insight into the play and its system of characterization by integrating these approaches. To this end, the paper draws on Jonathan Culpeper’s cognitive stylistic theory of top-down and bottom-up processes in literary text comprehension and characterization. Based on this holistic framework, the paper takes advantage of such stylistic tools as speech acts, the Cooperative Principle and politeness theory to examine features of the language used by the characters Proctor and Danforth. In this regard, the article assimilates those linguistic elements with the embedded schemata within the play. Consequently, the study reveals that Proctor’s complex characterization does not coincide with the readers’ schema and thus they form their impression of his character based on piecemeal integration. On the other hand, Danforth’s character reinforces the readers’ schema about a representative of the church discourse and thus they comprehend his character on the basis of confirmatory categorization. The paper concludes that while Proctor and Danforth have a passive existence in the text or in people’s minds, it is only in the interaction between their language and the readers’ minds that they come into existence.

Abstract:
The article covers the stylistics of the work “Exercices de style” by the French writer Raymond Queneau and the translation of this work into Lithuanian. Through the analysis of translations into Italian and English as well, the article investigates the distinctive feature of Queneau’s texts – how they play with various language tools. The article distinguishes and discusses the play of literary devices (these are figures of style and rhetoric), the play of linguistic devices (grammatical tenses, barbarisms, neologisms), the play of language registers (colloquial language, jargon), the play of genres and discourses, and the play of narrative techniques. While playing with the language, the author seeks to entertain the reader – the exercises are rich in various elements of comedy, parody and irony. It is not possible to systematically apply one translation strategy to translate this work, therefore the translator Akvilė Melkūnaitė focused on conveying the logic of Queneau’s rules, making the translation strategies related to semantic and stylistic translation of the text diverse and successful, while the complicated conveying of cultural realia (e.g. jargon) is offset by other means of translation.

The paper shows how, upon meditation on the lived reality of Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, modernist literature writers resort to fragmented language, mythical usages, and nonlinear structures to respond to the much ravaging and grotesque events witnessed by the world in general and Europe in particular in this epoch. Reflecting the compartmentalized and Balkanized reality of the world through its dazzling stylistic and figurative innovations, modernist literature sought to shock audiences, to lead bare the inconsistency of the human condition. This goes in parallel with an emerging philosophy that turned conventions upside down in different domains: ethics and morals, religion, history, economy, politics, aesthetics, arts, and language among others.

This article describes the semantic features, stylistic means of English phraseological units related to sports. It has also been pointed out that the study of the interrelationship of terminology and phraseology is one of the new and at the same time topical issues of modern linguistics. In linguistics, there are such stable, stable phrases that create the sensitivity and imagery of speech, the emergence of which is strongly associated with people's views and attitudes towards things and events in objective existence. Members of society use linguistic means based on various comparisons in order to express their views and attitudes towards things in an exciting, figurative and influential way. In this sense, the person, thing, event, and scene depicted is often interpreted through images or analogies that are familiar to the listener. As a result, the effect and image of speech become stronger and larger. We know that phraseological units and stylistic devices are among such tools that increase the effectiveness of speech.

Abstract:
The two main factors that characterize a text are its content and its style, and both can be used as a means of categorization. In this paper we present an approach to text categorization in terms of genre and author for Modern Greek. In contrast to previous stylometric approaches, we attempt to take full advantage of existing natural language processing (NLP) tools. To this end, we propose a set of style markers including analysis-level measures that represent the way in which the input text has been analyzed and capture useful stylistic information without additional cost. We present a set of small-scale but reasonable experiments in text genre detection, author identification, and author verification tasks and show that the proposed method performs better than the most popular distributional lexical measures, i.e., functions of vocabulary richness and frequencies of occurrence of the most frequent words. All the presented experiments are based on unrestricted text downloaded from the World Wide Web without any manual text preprocessing or text sampling. Various performance issues regarding the training set size and the significance of the proposed style markers are discussed. Our system can be used in any application that requires fast and easily adaptable text categorization in terms of stylistically homogeneous categories. Moreover, the procedure of defining analysis-level markers can be followed in order to extract useful stylistic information using existing text processing tools.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of polycode advertising texts placed on food packaging. The relevance of the study is determined by the fact that at present, when the decision to purchase is often made directly at the point of sale, the role of information on the packaging has increased many times over. This fact makes it necessary to analyze modern technologies of influence and manipulation that are relevant for this type of discourse. The author considers the text on the packaging as a communicative and structural holistic message, consisting of semiotically heterogeneous elements, characterized by high pragmatic and expressive saturation, aimed at encouraging consumers to make a purchase of a particular product. A typology of functions performed by the information on the packaging is proposed. The main polycode tools that ensure the effective implementation of these functions are considered. As the most frequent polycode techniques used in the text on food packaging, the author identifies the following: an emphasis is made on a unique component in the composition, categorization of the target audience according to certain criteria, the use of means of expression, including provocative metaphorization, appeal to authoritative opinion, the use of stylistic visualization, technologies of narrative and storytelling, etc.

Abstract. For a comprehensive study of tropes and stylistic figures of the Ukrainian language is extremely important to learn the basic functions of tropes in the scientific linguistic articles. The actuality of the research topic is determined by the need of a systematic study of tropes and stylistic figures that are traditionally considered unusual for the text, but we will try to prove that they are relevant. In modern scientific literature, the expressive and emotional function is presented and implemented by the help of such tools as epithets and metaphors. The study of the linguistic features of scientific discourse is of great importance to find ways of explaining a certain material. The study, using a free associative experiment, has led to the conclusion that the use of artistic means and stylistic figures in the educational and scientific texts makes it possible to master the material better. Generally speaking, the use of artistic means in scientific texts is not widespread, but the student audience prefers these texts. The use of metaphors, epithets, phraseologisms, comparisons, periphrases in professional articles is an effective way of highlighting important elements of scientific discourse, forming the individual style of the researcher. If the text is addressed to the reader for educational purposes, the correct use of paths will facilitate the quickest possible understanding of the basic thought of the message. In our view, a promising direction is the further study of communicative analysis of tropes in scientific texts.

Abstract:
This article constitutes an introduction to the five articles that appear in this special issue. This framing process starts by highlighting the sparse, yet important, work that has been conducted over the past 20 years on children’s literature in the field of stylistics. The focus in the article then turns to a more general discussion of the language of children’s literature. Here, in this chronological overview of language usage in books written for children, an outline is sketched from the writers and philosophers of the enlightenment up to contemporary debates on literacy, cognition and theory of mind. In the section that follows, the five studies that appear in this special issue are briefly synopsized. What becomes apparent is the wide range of methodological approaches that have been taken by the scholars in question to analyze the texts that are under investigation, in both quantitative and qualitative ways. The article ends with a plea for more stylistic work to be conducted in the areas of both children’s literature and young adult fiction. This is especially pertinent because stylisticians possess the key linguistic and analytic skills and tools to help, in interdisciplinary settings, to address current social, emotional and cognitive challenges pertaining to child development through literacy and through reading in particular.

The existence of majaz mursal i'tibar ma kana in the Qur'an has proven the use of majaz style of language in the Qur'an which underlined that the Qur’an cannot be separated from majaz. The study of the Qur'an will cause the ambiguity in meaning and even fatal mistakes if balaghah approach (majaz) is not used. The data of this research were obtained from the Qur'an and the opinions of several Balaghah experts, such as Abu Ubaidah and Az-Zamakhsyary as the source of information in this study. Semantics was also used in this research, which was analyzing the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an which were classified as majaz i'tibar ma kana. The research results showed that there were 12 verses in the Qur'an including majaz mursal i'tibar ma kana which were found in the different verses, such as surah Al-Baqarah verse (2): 234, surah An-nisa verse (4): 2, surah An-nisa verse (4) 12, surah Al-Rahman verse (55): 56, surah Al-Kahfi verse (28): 47, surah Al-Hujarat verse (49): 9, surah: An-Naml verse (27): 87, surah Fussilat verse (41): 21, surah Thaha verse (20): 74, surah Nuh verse (71): 26-2, surah Ad-Dhukhan (44) verse: 47,48 49. So, there must be a meaningful figure of speech (metaphor) in understanding the verses of the Qur'an and there was no ambiguous meaning. Abstract:
Background, objectives and methodology of the research. Musical performing art of the XX–XXI centuries demonstrates a steady and growing interest in a huge array of music from pre-classical eras – the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque. The baroque music occupies a leading position in the field of instrumental performing as an obligatory part of the educational (works by J. S. Bach) and concert repertoire. The problem of interpretation of early music, acutely posed by musicians of the XX century – up to the reconstruction of all historical performance parameters – retains its relevance. In this regard, we note that the performance of a piece of music does not always make off the strongest impression precisely in its “primary” – restored – form, since reconstruction is limited by the volume of our historical knowledge, while modern musical instruments have a much wider range of expressiveness, than theirs historical predecessors, and the modern interpreter – “de facto”, due to his location in the historical space – a much richer thesaurus. So, the aim of this article is systematization, from the standpoint of the teaching experience of its author in the piano class, observations and practical recommendations regarding the style of performing of ancient instrumental music and approaches to its interpretation by a pianist on an instrument of modern construction. The methodology of the study includes an appeal to the intonation theory of B. Asafiev (1971), when considering the dynamic processes of formation of the musical form and the functioning of articulatory units – motifs, phrases, rhetorical figures, strokes, etc.; to the provisions of the works of M. Mikhailov (1981), E. Nazaikinskiy (2003), O. Katrich (2000) concerning the theory of styles; V. Kholopova (1979) and G. Ignatchenko (1983), when considering performance techniques that emphasize the originality of the texture of baroque music; as well as generally accepted methods of scientific research: analysis, selection, structuring of information with its subsequent generalization. Presentation of research results. The study of ancient instrumental music in the piano class is extremely important for the formation of a competent specialist, a musician of a wide range. In the cognitive process, such stages must be passed as determining the style, genre, form of the musical work, identifying the features of the musically expressive means used in it and finding appropriate ways to embody them. It is necessary to make as complete an idea as possible of the past historical epoch, its philosophy, aesthetics, different types of art and their interaction. The purpose of work on pieces of ancient music should be directing а performer to the general laws of “style of the era” (according to M. Mikhailov, 1981), because, despite national differences, by the middle of the XVIII century, a certain “panEuropean” style was formed, which was of great importance for the formation of the next generations of musicians. One of the brightest manifestations of the musical style of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is a close connection between music and the art of rhetoric. When referring to ancient music, performers must take into account the enormous influence that rhetoric had on the formation of musical thinking at that time. The close relationship of the latter with the oratory, which is based on a set of laws and rules, led to the influence of musical-rhetorical figures on the semantics of musical language, and, consequently – on the intonation-declamation sphere of musical text, ways of articulation. The latter were largely determined by the design features of ancient tools. The variety of characteristic techniques of instrumental sound production – expressive touches, among which a special place was occupied by the string strokes (legato, detache, martele, etc.) – has become an integral part of the style of European music of the XVII–XVIII centuries. Transferring them to the field of piano technique is necessary for adequate interpretation of works of this period, requiring the pianist to find appropriate analogues that allow to some extent to reproduce the figurative, articulatory, timbre-color, texture characteristics of the performed work. Modern piano, which due to a fundamentally different method of sound production does not claim to be an authentic reproduction of baroque music, has its own rich arsenal of expressiveness, which allows you to offer the listener no less interesting interpretive content of music of past eras. The art of outstanding pianists of the XX–XXI centuries, to whose audio and video recordings modern performers turn in search of a reference sound (G. Gould, S. Richter, S. Feinberg, T. Nikolaeva, M.Argerich, F. Gulda, G. Sokolov, A. Schiff and others) demonstrates this fact clearly. Conclusions. Not reconstruction, but reproduction of the style, image and spirit of early music becomes the leading principle of working on it in the piano class. And here the pianist should come to the aid of a conscious intonation, based on knowledge of both the general laws of the reproduced style and its characteristic details. The outstanding interpreter of early music V. Landowska (1991: 350) wrote: “One cannot ignore the reading of Quantz’s treatises on playing the flute, Leopold Mozart on the violin, Tosi-Agricola on singing, François Couperin, Rameau, Frescobaldi, Marpurg, K. F. E. Bach and many others – about playing keyboard instruments”. Finding “unexpected treasures” in them, “the disciples are delighted, because they begin to realize what they simply did not pay attention to before. In such cases, you find yourself witnessing an explosion of joy, somewhat reminiscent of the discovery of love”.

Abstract:
This article explores the affordances and functionalities of the Dutch CLARIAH research infrastructure – and the integrated video annotation tool – for doing media historical research with digitised audiovisual sources from television archives. The growing importance of digital research infrastructures, archives and tools, has enticed media historians to rethink their research practices more and more in terms of methodological transparency, tool criticism and reflection. Moreover, also questions related to the heuristics and hermeneutics of our scholarly work need to be reconsidered. The article hence sketches the role of digital research infrastructures for the humanities (in the Netherlands), and the use of video annotation in media studies and other research domains. By doing so, the authors reflect on their own specific engagements with the CLARIAH infrastructure and its tools, both as media historians and co-developers. This dual position greatly determines the possibilities and constraints for the various modes of digital scholarship relevant to media history. To exemplify this, two short case studies – based on a pilot project ‘Me and Myself. Tracing First Person in Documentary History in AV-Collections’ – show how the authors deployed video annotation to segment interpretative units of interest, rather than opting for units of analysis common in statistical analysis. The deliberate choice to abandon formal modes of moving image annotation and analysis ensued from a delicate interplay between the desired interpretative research goals, and the integration of tool criticism and reflection in the research design. The authors found that due to the formal and stylistic complexity of documentaries, also alternative, hermeneutic research strategies ought to be supported by digital infrastructures and its tools.

Abstract:
Modern dialogue in the semantic context of educational sciences plays an extremely important role as a tool for making science-based decisions as a means of assessing the efficiency of innovations proposed by various authors. However, the practice of modern scientific discussions in pedagogy reveals a lot of problems. Analysis of the research topic literature shows that the core of this problem is the failure to observe the rules of logically correct discourse by the dialogue participants. In the pedagogical dialogues, in particular, there is a simplified application of the logical law of the excluded middle introduced by Aristotle, which does not reflect the rich assortment of the educational field. It has a solid methodological basis in mathematics, in the humanities though (and in pedagogy, in particular), it is often used to analyze phenomena, objects, and scientific facts that go beyond the area of its adequate applicability. It is often used: a) for vague classification forms; b) for insufficiently and accurately defined objects; c) for pairs of events that are not opposite (in terms of probability theory) and mutually exclusive. It results in dialogues participants: a) solving the problems of choosing conceptual foundations and practical decisions for implementation in education incorrectly; b) coming to rigid, rigorous conclusions; c) unjustifiably abandoning many educational traditions, replacing them with insufficiently verified innovations. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the participants in pedagogical dialogues lack mastery of stylistic resources, the use of which allows the inceptors of pedagogical ideas to achieve an adequate understanding of their inferences and conclusions made by other participants. These circumstances, supported by the provisions of the European researchers of education, determine the relevance of the chosen topic. The purpose of this article is: a) to find ways to conduct a logically correct pedagogical dialogue that actively uses the Aristotelian law of the excluded middle (both in a constructive format and in terms of prohibition criteria); b) to find stylistic resources of such a dialogue, combining the scientific rigor of the humanitarian logical form and stylistic aesthetic appeal. The results of the conducted research are the conclusions that an effective pedagogical dialogue using the law of the excluded middle is conditioned by: a) replacement of dichotomous, rigid forms in the logic “either – or” with a concomitant format of combination of “both the one and the other at the same time; but neither one nor the other separately”; b) appropriate stylistic tools, including: stylistic gradation, metaphor, oxymoron, and emphatic transposition. As negativity that must be overcome in every possible way, there are the “traps” of pedagogical dialogues that require constructive and prohibiting formats of the excluded middle principle: a) incorrect “play” on a high degree of uncertainty of the original defended premise; b) deliberate scientifically dishonest methods of substantiating their own conclusions, forcing opponents to recognize the correctness and validity of the dichotomous form applied to the phenomena to which it cannot be applied.

Abstract:
Introduction. The present study examines the pragmastilistic potential of migration discourse based on the speeches of modern British politicians. The relevance of the chosen topic lies in the acute social specifics of migration discourse and its manipulative component. In today’s world, migration processes have become global and their impact on the development of the host culture is becoming increasingly evident. There is still no established strategy for the integration of migrants into the new society, which creates a conflict environment and determines the hostility of the indigenous population towards migrants. Migration discourse as one of the directions of policy discourse becomes an effective tool for managing public opinion. Various persuasive tactics are incorporated in the speech of politicians using linguistic means, the use of which in the British migration discourse is considered in this article.Methodology and sources. The key tasks of the study are to identify specific discursive tactics, by means of which the persuasive strategy is implemented in the British migration discourse, and to analyze the stylistic techniques used to design the discovered tactics. During the study, pragmastilistic analysis was used, the application of which involves referring to the following methods of linguistic research: the method of continuous sampling, quantitative, descriptive and comparative methods, the method of stylistic analysis, discursive analysis. The material of the study was the speeches of modern British politicians from 2004 to 2021. Results and discussion. The analysis of migration discourse based on the texts of speeches by modern British politicians allows to talk about the stylistic saturation of the material and the main means of expressiveness used in the framework of the discourse under consideration. The main tactic of opponents of free migration is the comparison of “good/bad” migrants, which is actualized using antithesis. As for the lexical stylistic means, the use of the epithet should be specified, which is also a way of actualizing opposition tactics. Thus, this tactic is implemented both at the lexical and syntactic level. Similar tactics are also relevant in the framework of pro-migration rhetoric, namely, when comparing the local elite and the visiting population, which performs all the work necessary for the functioning of society. In most cases the main stylistic technique for tactics actualization is antithesis (or the convergence of antithesis and epithet). Proponents of pro-migration policies also use metaphor (tactics for describing the political process) and syntactic parallelism (tactics for describing the benefits of migration). Finally, the most common tactic inherent in both poles of migration discourse is the tactic of generalization. It consists in equating the speaker with his audience, their “fusion”, and is most often actualized using hyperbola.Conclusion. Migration discourse is characterized by an ideological orientation, which is actualized using certain speech techniques, tactics and strategies. Migration discourse, as a multifaceted entity, can also serve to harmonize social life by facilitating the integration of migrants into the host culture. Migration discourse is a powerful ideological weapon that can be used both to contribute to integration and to incite ethnic hatred. Stylistic tools play a key role in the implementation of a persuasive strategy, which is actively used both in migration and in political discourse in general. The main tactics of the migration discourse of modern British politicians are opposition and generalization, used both in pro- and anti-migration rhetoric.
